The theme “It’s Time” recognizes and celebrates the 35th anniversary of Women of Achievement, while also allowing us to look back through the years, back at the accomplishments of YWCA Columbus over the past year, and into the future at what each Women of Achievement think it is “time for.”

Today we honor our newest Academy members: Sandra J. Anderson, Alison J. Barret, Francie Henry, Lisa Ingram, Dr. Anahi Ortiz, and Barbara Jean Smoot. These exemplary women join 268 others who have been inducted into our Academy of Women of Achievement over the last 35 years.

In holding true with tradition–in this milestone year–we also honor exemplary young women doing great work in our community. These Women On The Rise–Victoria Alesi, Suzy Bureau, Rhiannon Childs, Jordan Davis, Sundeepti Jindal and Christina Patel–will be the next change-makers in Columbus. We can't wait to see what they do next!

SANDRA J. ANDERSONRETIRED ATTORNEY, NOW COMMUNITY SERVANT

2020 Woman of Achievement

Sandy Anderson has an incredible personal and professional track record of commitment to dignity, equity, and respect for others. Raised as a farmer’s daughter in Ross County, she went on to graduate Summa Cum Laude from Ohio University, and Magna Cum Laude from Northwestern University School of Law, where she earned her Juris Doctor degree.

Sandy became a female attorney when the practice of law was extremely male-dominated. While working on the partnership track, she opened doors and carved a path for the female attorneys who would come after her. Beginning in the 1990s, Sandy fought for gender fairness for women in law, even serving on the Ohio Supreme Court Joint Task Force for Gender Fairness.

She is a generous mentor to young attorneys and to women beginning their service as

board members. Her own board service, both past and present, is expansive. From her election as the first woman President of the Columbus Bar Association Board of Governors in 1996, to her current leadership of Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio and Equality Ohio, Sandy has been positively impacting the Columbus community for decades. Her tenure on Equality Ohio spanned the battle for marriage equality, and now she is an adamant defender of women’s reproductive rights through her work with Planned Parenthood.

She is a tireless advocate for women, minorities, and members of LGBTQIA communities, both in her work as an attorney, and through her numerous roles as a community servant.

ALISON J. BARRET GRANTS & SERVICES DIRECTOR, GREATER COLUMBUS ARTS COUNCIL

Now more than ever, It’s Time toMARCH FORTH!

Alison is an insistent voice for social justice whose service is humble, inspiring, and genuine. As the Director of Grants and Services at the Greater Columbus Arts Council, she is responsible for awarding approximately $4 million yearly in grants to artists and arts organizations in the Columbus area, while assuring equity and access to funding for all segments of the community.

Her current role at GCAC follows a long professional history of philanthropy in Central Ohio. Because of her background, Alison’s counsel is sought by nonprofit leaders and development professionals to strengthen fundraising campaigns and diversify organizations. As a result, Alison’s impact on philanthropy in Columbus, and therefore on the community in general, is wide and deep.

In addition to her professional service, Alison has served on many nonprofit boards—BESA, YWCA Columbus, Thurber House, and Broad Street Presbyterian Church. But her nearly 20 years of philanthropy experience and board service are just the tip of the iceberg of Alison’s giving spirit.

She donates much of her personal time and treasure to the causes dearest to her, and encourages others to do the same, in ways big and small. On her birthday (March 4th), Alison asks her friends and family to “March Forth” and participate in their communities, amplifying and multiplying her generous impact.

It’s Time for us to APPRECIATE one another for who we are.

Francie is driven to make a difference in Central Ohio through empowering women and providing educational opportunities for low to moderate-income individuals. These two passions are the motivating force between Francie’s personal volunteerism and her professional philanthropy at Fifth Third Bank, where she serves as the only female Regional President.

Her long and impressive career history in banking tells the story of hard work and perseverance, which is rooted in Francie’s experiences growing up as the daughter of hardworking Greek immigrants in Mount Vernon, Ohio.

Through her remarkable banking career, Francie has mentored hundreds of

women inside and outside of Fifth Third Bank, providing a strong model of female leadership in a historically male-dominated industry.

Her profound impact on the Central Ohio community can be seen and felt in her service and contributions to The Women’s Fund of Central Ohio, the Columbus Women’s Commission, the Ohio Commission of Independent Colleges, the Jeanne B. McCoy Community Center for the Arts, and many more. Francie gravitates toward supporting nonprofit organizations that appreciate gender, cultural, and ethnic differences. She advocates that these differences are what provide the spirit and vitality of a community.

LISA INGRAM PRESIDENT & CEO, WHITE CASTLE

Lisa Ingram is a champion for diversity and a strong advocate for vulnerable populations. This is apparent in her actions as the President and CEO of White Castle, where she has created a Diversity and Inclusion Committee, and worked to revise systems and processes so that women and minorities have equal opportunities for promotion. Lisa is the fourth Ingram family member to serve as President of the iconic Columbus company.

Outside of White Castle, Lisa’s commitment to inclusion and empowerment comes shining through in her volunteer board involvement. In her work on the OhioHealth board, she advocates to ensure resources are put in place to bridge gaps for our community’s most vulnerable populations. Similarly, through her work on the United Way of Central Ohio board, she champions

creating opportunity and investment in underserved neighborhoods. In addition to her own board service, Lisa is a member of a local program to prepare women for board roles, where she provides an example of powerful female leadership while helping others navigate new service opportunities.

Her innovation and creativity, coupled with her vision and values, has made her a force within her industry, and these same qualities have been an invaluable asset to the city of Columbus. In 2018, Lisa was named one of 35 Women’s Foodservice Forum Industry Titans, where she was recognized for her public commitment to prioritizing women’s advancement within her organization.

It’s Time, because now we KNOW better.And together we must DO better to achieve lasting change for generations to come.

It’s Time that we start having REAL CONVERSATIONS with young people about mental well-being.

Dr. Ortiz brings compassion and dignity to her work in a way that has impacted many of our community members during their most vulnerable time. As the Franklin County Coroner, she is committed to treating everyone who comes to her office with dignity and respect.

Her focus on prevention, such as the creation of the Franklin County Opiate Crisis Task Force, will have long-lasting positive impacts on the underserved and overlooked populations of our area. In February of 2019, Dr. Ortiz assisted in launching CORRN, the Central Ohio Recovery Residences Network, which provides resources for those in search of recovery residence. Her dedication to mental health awareness, suicide prevention, and the elimination of addiction stigma will have long-lasting impacts on the health and wellness of Franklin County residents.

Her upbringing in the Bronx, New York, as the daughter of immigrant parents, has inspired her commitment to cultural sensitivity and ensuring important community resources are accessible to all.

As a Latina woman, she serves her community as a mentor, speaker, and advisor for organizations such as WELD, the Latina Mentoring Academy, Ohio Latino Affairs Commission, Our Lady of Guadalupe Center, and more. She also serves on the advisory boards for YMCA of Central Ohio, Netcare, Franklin County Suicide Prevention Coalition, EnVision, and Poyecto Mariposas. Professionally and personally, Dr. Ortiz is committed to creating a more equitable city with determination, generosity, and courage.

BARBARA JEAN SMOOTPRESIDENT & CEO, WOMEN FOR ECONOMIC AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT (WELD)

Barb advocates fiercely for the advancement of women and women of color. As the President and CEO of WELD (Women for Economic Leadership Development), she is tirelessly committed to strengthening the prosperity of communities through developing women’s leadership. Under Barb’s leadership, WELD has launched an innovative suite of programs designed to help women and people of color for government boards and commissions, for-profit advisory boards, and public and private company boards.

Outside of her role with WELD, she shares her time and talent with many other organizations, serving as a Commissioner of the Columbus Women’s Commission, Advisory Board Member of the Overcomer Foundation, and Board Member of National Church Residences. Through her work with these organizations and more, Barb has

dedicated her life to empowering women and overcoming racial and economic barriers to their opportunities.

In addition to her board service, Barb provides guidance to nonprofit leaders, helping them to diversify and grow their organizations. Her strong and encouraging leadership has also positioned her to mentor several women and, through her personal and professional philanthropy, provide life-changing resources for women in need. These include assistance in finding childcare, scholarships, and rides to leadership events. Barb’s commitment to developing the next generation of women leaders is impassioned and far-reaching.

Her ability to bring together women of all walks of life, ethnicities, incomes, abilities and ages has greatly enriched the Central Ohio community.

It’s Time for all of us to plant ourselves squarely…. to end gender disparity…to eliminate the choking weeds of racism ensuring that Black Lives Matter…and CULTIVATE OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL.

VICTORIA ALESI | Sales Consultant, NetJets A Columbus Foundation Summer Fellow, a YWCA Columbus Leadership for Social Change Fellow, an Ohio State University Young Alumni Academy Graduate, and member of the Matriots, Victoria passionately advocates for an inclusive and active Central Ohio community.In addition to her community service and volunteer roles, Victoria is a Sales Consultant at NetJets Aviation, as well as a Rehearsal Director and a Company Member with Hixon Dance, where she loves to use movement as a method to connect with her company and the community alike. She’s a proud graduate of The Ohio State University, where she still impacts and engages the student community.

JORDAN DAVIS | Director of Smart Columbus, Columbus PartnershipInstrumental in Columbus becoming the winner of U.S.DoT’s 2016 Smart Cities Challenge, Jordan Davis has played a founding role as Director of Smart Columbus for the Columbus Partnership, leading strategy for deploying emerging technologies to improve lives. She led one of the country’s first self-driving vehicle deployments, partnerships with 100+ organizations representing $720 million in aligned investment, efforts to increase electric vehicle adoption by nearly 500% to lead the Midwest in market growth, and the creation of Can’t Stop Columbus, a virtual civic innovation platform with 600+ active volunteers. Jordan has been honored as ‘Top 25 Government Doers, Dreamers, and Drivers’ (Government Magazine), ‘Top 100 Influential Young Executives’ (American City Business Journals), and a ‘Rising Star’ (Automotive News).

CHRISTINA PATEL | Director of Development, The Ohio State UniversityThrough her work as a Director of Development at The Ohio State University, Christina advocates for higher education equity by working with donors to establish scholarships for students with financial need. She is actively engaged in the nonprofit space with human service organizations and higher education institutions, and currently serves as a board member of Create Columbus Commission and Association of Fundraising Professionals Central Ohio.As a first-generation, American-born Indian woman, Christina is familiar with the cultural and professional challenges inherent to being a person of color. Her lived experiences continually motivate her to champion the advancement of the nonprofit sector by making it more inclusive and equitable for current and future professionals of color.

SUNDEEPTI JINDAL | Former Gender Equity Advisor, Columbus Women's Commission, City of ColumbusMost recently, Sundeepti Jindal served as the Gender Equity Advisor with the Columbus Women’s Commission in Mayor Andrew J. Ginther’s office. In this role, she worked to advance equitable policies for women in Columbus. Prior, Sundeepti served as the Education and Research Manager at The Women’s Fund of Central Ohio, where she was responsible for leading the organization’s policy research needs. Having always been passionate about policy, Sundeepti began her career at the Crane Center for Early Childhood Research and Policy analyzing the impact of poverty on children in Columbus.As a proud daughter of immigrants, a Columbus native and graduate of The Ohio State University, Sundeepti actively works on issues in her community to address injustice.

RHIANNON CHILDS | Co-Founder & VP of Community Engagement,Ohio Women's Alliance Rhiannon Childs is the Co-Founder of Ohio Women's Alliance, a statewide capacity-building organization that develops community leaders and grassroots organizations centering the leadership of Black womxn and womxn of color.Rhiannon is also a veteran of the United States Air Force and former Executive Director of Women's March Ohio, where in 2016 she mobilized over 20,000 people throughout Ohio and onward to Washington, D.C. for the largest protest march in United States history. Rhiannon currently serves on the executive board for New Leaders Council Columbus, Women's Have Options Ohio, and Juvenile Justice Coalition. Rhiannon's ambitions are to continue to uplift the people of her community and to provide more significant opportunities for womxn to reach prosperity and liberation.

SUZY BUREAU | Founder, GiveBackHackThe ebullient Suzy Bureau (as she was referred to in TechCrunch) is dedicated to building impactful communities and products. As the Founder of GiveBackHack, Suzy rallied a national team of 50+ changemakers to bring to life a vision of leveraging Design Thinking to bridge the gap between technology, social impact, and entrepreneurship. GiveBackHack has helped community members across the nation vet more than 100 social impact concepts and funded them with over $100,000 to create social impact in communities.She honed her technology and startup chops via product ownership of multi-million dollar innovations as an early employee at CoverMyMeds, a HIT startup that grew from 40 people to $1.3 billion acquisition over her time there.
