Little Lunch is a 26 x 12 minute comedy series where every episode takes place during that highly anticipated school day break – morning snack time! Each episode tackles the big issues in the playground. Who gets to go on the monkey bars? Who gets Mrs. Gonsha off the fireman’s pole when she gets stuck? Little Lunch tells stories that may seem small to adults, but loom large for kids.

Based on the original book series by Danny Katz and illustrated by Mitch Vane, the mockumentary series offers an entertaining and engaging lens into the stories and politics that plague the modern day schoolyard. Through the tales of the several main characters, each one with their own unique personality and flair, we are introduced to a variety of

themes; such as friendship, identity, family, behaviour, problem solving, interpersonal relationships, growth and development, coping with challenges, health and fitness, self and social awareness, achievement and values; providing a valuable stimulus for exploring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), English, Humanities and Health and Physical Education (HPE) within middle years classrooms.

IT’S ALL TOO SHORT, BUT TOMORROW THERE IS ALWAYS ANOTHER ‘LITTLE LUNCH’ AND ANOTHER STORY TO BE RE-TOLD!Everyone has a little lunch story to tell and in modeling the relatable, funny and moving on-screen tales of the series, the ACTF’s new Little Lunch App and Multi-touch Book pave the way for classrooms to tell and share theirs.

Little Lunch AppDesigned to engage classrooms with student focused learning that integrates new technologies, the Little Lunch App supports students to create, deliver and share their own Little Lunch inspired episode, using a tablet device.

In stage 1, users are guided through a series of steps that help them establish their story - Who is your main character? Take a picture of them. Who stars in your film? Add their names to your credit roll. Where did your story take place? Use your finger to draw a picture of the place that best represents your story.

In stage 2, the user eats their way through their ‘story arc’ inspired lunch box, filming 5 scenes that make up their ‘little lunch’ story. With each bite, they’re given the option to place their film in the past or present, to use ‘natural’ sound or a voice over – helping the user to understand the basic structure and principles of storytelling, whilst encouraging them to be creative and play with traditional time and narrative structure.

When both stages are complete, the app magically stitches together the entire user generated content into a personalised short movie that replicates an episode of the original Little Lunch series, ready to be shared.

Little Lunch Multi-touch BookTo ensure that teachers feel comfortable in delivering the Little Lunch App into their classrooms, the supplementary Little Lunch Multi-touch Book guides teachers through each of the screens within the app - highlighting relevant curriculum links and providing additional screen-based activities that can be used with students to develop the skills and knowledge they require to be effective ‘little lunch’ storytellers.

The interactive book also features a Little Lunch episode guide – including the original series trailer and a synopsis for all 26 episodes, matched with relevant themes and topics for appropriate classroom selection.

The Multi-touch Book is available in the iBook Store. For android users, a PDF version can be downloaded from The Learning Centre.

On Saturday December 5, Sydney’s Centennial Parklands will play host to the next Trop Jr short film festival. The event will showcase the finalist films chosen from this year’s competition, of which only one will be crowned the winner!

With so many wonderful entries by dedicated young filmmakers, this year the Trop Jr team has decided to really shine a spotlight on them and their talents, by hosting a stand-alone event, one day earlier than Tropfest.

The independent program will offer families a unique and tailored experience, with live afternoon entertainment and special guests.

“We’re planning a whole evening of activities for kids so not only will families be able to see some incredible films but

you can settle in with a picnic blanket for a whole night of fun,” said Michael Laverty, Managing Director of Tropfest.

Entry to the Trop Jr live event is free, so grab your friends and family, and get down early to reserve your spot for an evening of awesome entertainment!
