Steve Wright says that for our upcoming session he’ll concentrate on reeds, leaving the brass work to Dave Holo. With Jacob also on stage we can look forward to some sparkling reed duets! The Yeti Chasers have always been a tight little group. Dave Holo and Jacob Zimmerman are familiar with the band and will blend right in. Once again, as the winter solstice approaches, Ray Skjelbred musters his Yeti Chasers for what has become a December tradition. Each year since 2009 Ray’s quartet, plus two or three added musicians, has played our December session. For the first few years Ray’s close-knit little group appeared as the First Thursday Band, so-called for their slot in the schedule at Gaye Anderson’s New Orleans Restaurant. When that venue closed the doors for good those four became the Yeti Chasers. Left to right, as pictured, they are Dave Brown, bass, Steve Wright, cornet and reeds, leader Ray Skjelbred, piano and Mike Daugherty, drums.

This year’s additions will be Dave Holo on cornet and Jacob Zimmerman, reeds. It’s been some months since Dave Holo has been with us and it will be great to see and hear him again. Jacob is the exciting young reedman we most

recently heard with the Good Herb band, last September.

Ray selects interesting tunes, his tempos bring out the best features of the music he chooses and the Yeti Chasers’ unfailing rhythm suits the dancers. It’s all coming together for us at the Ballard Elks, on December 17th. Join us there, vote for next year’s officers and board members and enjoy this year’s pre-holiday session!

Puget Sound Traditional Jazz SocietyPSTJS officers and board members - December 2017 Absentee ballot

*Incumbent

We all aware of the relatively recent attempts to change language and expressions so as not to offend any race, culture, religious group or whatever. While it is necessary and proper to treat all people with respect, sometimes these changes sound ridiculous. To achieve these desirable changes the change agents take extreme steps, often inadver-tently generating a backlash countering their efforts. There always has to be a balance. Extremists are needed to achieve progress, but it is the moderates that make things work.

Many songs and stories in the past contained things that would be very offensive to most people today. But we cannot change history nor should we destroy literature and songs of the past because they are of-fensive by today’s standards. My friends Jim and Ginger Reid, PSTJS members from Victoria, BC are buyers and sellers of antiques. Some years ago I sold them a mechanical toy that my mother bought me for my second birthday in 1928. This ingenious little device consisted of a man with arms and legs that were jointed causing his arms and legs to swing and looking very much like a man dancing. They paid me about 75 times what my mother paid for the toy in 1928.

The problem was that the toy was called a “Coon jigger” and the figure was apparently meant to represent either a black man with exag-gerated Negroid features, or perhaps a Caucasian in blackface. The Re-ids tell me that these old racist artifacts are often bought up by wealthy Black people as collectors items. As offensive as these toys were, they now are useful reminders to people of all colors that in the not too dis-tant past blatant racism was pervasive.

Jim and Ginger did not resell the antique toy but put it in a large display case in their home where they keep a few choice items. I spent a weekend with the Reids a few years ago and it was a treat to see my little “Coon Jigger” being displayed.

In addition to being an antique dealer, Jim is an accomplished trad jazz cometist. He has a band called The Bastion Jazz Band which is still active in Victoria. Jim travels a lot so he doesn’t get to play with the band much any more. I once invited them to a PSTJS concert many years ago, and I had the thrill of playing tuba with the Bastion.

Every year Jim and Ginger fly to Australia and stay a month or so. Australia has a month-long jazz festival every year that attracts mu-sicians and fans from all over the world. The musicians form bands and play at various venues. It is a jazz event that unfortunately has no counterpart in the US.

If there is any moral to this story perhaps it is that Trad Jazz is enjoyed and played worldwide, and that racism is much less than it was a few decades ago.
