Course numbers will be IMPORTANT when scheduling classes:

• A number ending in “1” means the class will be 1st semester; a “2” means second semester.

• A number ending in 3 means it is a full-year course.

• A number ending in “4” means that it is a semester-long course that will be offered EITHER first or second semester.

• A number beginning with UTL means that it is a team-taught, regular ed course.

What are Concurrent Enrollment Program (CEP) Courses?

- Classes taught in Green Bay High Schools for which college credit can be earned through NWTC (no cost),

UW-Green Bay, or St. Norbert’s College (about $180 for 3 credits). Check on transferability

- Final grade goes on both high school and college transcript

- Deadline to submit application, statement, and teacher recommendations is March 1st

- Can change mind about taking it for college credit up to 10 days into the class. After that, no changes can be

made

Advanced Placement Courses

• 14 AP course options in school district • Optional AP Exams offered in May – $86 each• Class helps prepare for the exam – but can take

exam without the class• 5 is highest score; 1 is lowest – If you earn a 3, 4,

or 5 on most exams, 90% of colleges accept this for credit

• Results sent to students and high school near end of July

• The best AP candidates are very motivated students who tend to earn mostly A’s and B’s in classes. Homework expectations are generally high for these courses

Youth Apprenticeship Program• 2 year commitment – Jr. and

Sr. year (+ summer)• Experience involves:

* 1 hour of instruction a day related to chosen area

* 5 partial days working in business and industry with a mentor

* Earn certificate of occupational proficiency

* Keep a full HS schedule until a placement is found, then a 1-5 schedule

• Students must apply and interview for program

What’s new in Family & Consumer Education?

• The Nursing Assistant (CNA) class will now be a 2-hour block

- For certification, need 32 hours of clinicals and missing not more than 4 days of the class

- Technical colleges as well as many other health programs require certification as an entry requirement

• Child Services Skill-Certified Coop is comingto Preble next year- Must complete Early Childhood Education class prior to joining coop (Provides certification as an assistant Child Care Teacher) - Must have 1 Child Development class before taking this course

What’s new in Music Education?

• NEW course called “Rockin’, Strummin’, Plunkin’, and Drummin’ 1 – one semester- Opportunity to play the electric guitar, keyboard, and percussion instruments- No outside practice or concert performances required

• Music Theory is a class for students with a strong career interest and/or talent in music

• Bilingual Choir will be an option for next year

What’s new in Technology Education?

• 3-D Animation and Game Design will now be offered at Preble – one semester

• Printing Processes is now a semester instead of a year – Must take this course before taking Printing Production (year long)

• Students must have teacher approval and complete paperwork before enrolling in Research and Development for up to 1 credit

Personal and Financial Literacy(formerly PFM)

• Open to juniors and seniors

• The test-out option is offered Nov of each year

• Costs $5 - Must score 70% or better to earn a “P” - Credit is not given on the transcript for passing the test – Class is just waived

• Seniors cannot take the test out – they must take the class if they have not tested out prior to sr. year

• The test out is not an option if PFL is already in student’s schedule

What are my options for English Language Arts in Grade 11?

• English Language Arts 11 – 1 credit • OR Read 180 if in class this year and teacher

recommends it for next year

The following can REPLACE English 11 with teacher recommendation/initials on sheet:

• Advanced English Language Arts 11 – 1 credit • AP or CEP Language and Composition – 1 credit• AP or CEP Literature and Composition – 1 credit

Other English options for juniors include:

• Electives like Media Study, Speech, etc. (see course description online for details)

• Fundamentals of Public Address (CEP option), Acting, or Intro to Theater are other elective options available at West High School

• Students must have 4 credits of English Language Arts to graduate! Some 4-year colleges do not accept certain LA’s electives. Be sure to check on the acceptability of your classes with the college of your choice

What are my options for SOCIAL STUDIES?

• Juniors should take Social Studies 11: U.S. History and World Affairs (1914 to present)

• If you took AP World History in Gr. 10, you should take AP US History junior year. If you took AP US History, you should take AP World History junior year

• If you don’t want another AP class after taking AP World or AP US History this year, take Social Studies 11

• 3 credits of social studies are required to graduate! Consult with your teacher for recommendations

What’s new in Social Studies?

• Challenges of the 21st Century is now called Modern Issues

• Multicultural Studies is now called Issues of Race and Diversity

• NEW class called “Ancient Cultures” – 1 semester– The course explores the people, ideas, values, and

events that have shaped ancient cultures.

MATH• Speak to current math teacher and get initials by

their recommendation - If you struggle in math, ask about an enrichment/2-hour block

• Colleges prefer to see 4 years of high school math, even though only 3 are required for graduation

• Taking Algebra I in Grade 8 counts for 1 elective credit, not math credit. Gr. 8 Geometry does count for HS math credit

• If you are 4-year college bound, the completion of Algebra II is widely expected

• Int. Math A and B, as well as Int. Math 1 and 2 are no longer available next year

Alternative Ways to Earn Math Credits for HS Graduation

Earn a .5 math credit and a .5 elective credit by taking:

1) Business and Marketing Math OR2) Computerized Accounting I OR3) Computerized Accounting II and IIICan also earn a .5 math credit by taking:

Introduction of Computer Programming in Visual Basic

** Only 1 credit total of alternative math classes can apply toward the 3rd required math credit

SCIENCE• Only need Physical

Science and Biology for graduation, BUT 4-year colleges require at least 3 years of lab science and prefer four years

• Many nursing, health, and engineering programs require Chemistry before applying

• If you took Biology in Gr. 9 and Chemistry in Gr. 10, you MUST take Physics before graduation (or take Physical Science)

Other Science Reminders:• Conceptual Chemistry is a college-prep

chemistry course for students who do not have a strong math background and do not plan to enter a science-related field

• Chemistry is for students who have demonstrated a strong mathematical background and are interested in a science-related career

• It is recommended students complete a chemistry class prior to taking Advanced Biology

• Students taking AP Chemistry or AP Physics should have successfully completed Algebra II before taking the class

What’s new in Science?

• NEW class called “Energy Conservation Dynamics” – one semester- Students learn ways to save energy, the

importance of energy conservation, and the impact of energy savings for society and the environment

*This class must be taken before taking “Energy and Society” (CEP or non CEP) – a semester course designed to prepare students for careers in alternative and renewable energy

General Anatomy and Physiology – At East High

• Can take as a CEP course for NWTC credit

• Both CEP and non-CEP option = 1 HS credit for year

• Must have completed Biology and Chemistry OR Conceptual Chem with a “C” or better to take this course

• Rigorous, lab intensive course • Students taking this course for

credit in a nursing program at NWTC must earn a “B” or better

It’s recommended to take Medical

Terminology at East along with this class.

Physical Education

• Passing PE 9 is required to take Personal Fitness. Passing Personal Fitness is required to take Strength Training

• If you take a year of Phy Ed, the 2nd class will count for elective credit (unless you are making up a failed semester)

• You can take the same class twice (except PE 9)

• BE SURE to read descriptions of classes– changes are discouraged

•Phy Ed can be taken PASS/FAIL – must note on course selection sheet and cannot change mind after class begins

Summer Physical Education• If you plan to take PE in

the summer, still sign up for a PE class for Jr. year but indicate that you plan to take summer gym

• If you complete summer gym, we will put a study hall in place of the PE class in your schedule

• If you want a full schedule without study halls, we will leave PE out of your schedule. You will need to let us know if it needs to be added

Retaking a Course

• If you earned a “D” or “F” in a class, courses can be retaken.

• New grade will replace former grade if higher. NOTE: You cannot earn credit for the same course twice (exception is math).

college athletic team, visit: www.ncaa.org for the name of courses that are approved for credit through the NCAA. These courses are also listed in the course selection book.

A FEW REMINDERS…• We do not honor requests for specific study

hall or lunch periods due to limited space in each section. (Exceptions may be granted by building principal with valid reason).

• The class choices you make are COMMITMENTS. Staff are hired based on your requests for enrollment – so CHOOSE WISELY! Adds and drops of classes are discouraged. If there is good cause for a change, requests must be made before the first 10 days of the new school year.
