Tidy Towns show them how it’s done ... Sunday 8th December saw a group of Walpole Tidy Towns volunteers heading to Donnybrook to help clean the Highway as part of South West Litter Alliance. The aim of the SWLA is to make the whole south west highway as litter free as the 70km entrances to Walpole. 115 bags were collected along 5km of South Western Highway which was a great start, but there is still a lot more work to be done. Main Roads personnel came along to provide an induction on safety requirements that need to be complied with and also checked that all volunteers were correctly dressed. They then put up warning signs and left us to it. Adopt a Spot Co-ordinator Maureen Maher provided equipment and afternoon tea which was greatly appreciated. Volunteers who supported the effort were two Boyanup residents, one Bunbury, two Manjimup, three Greenbushes, one Northcliffe and four Walpole. Given the distance travelled by those of us from the other South West towns to get to Donnybrook, it was a shame that more from the Donnybrook community were too busy to help clean up.

A great effort by all those that attended. Stay tuned as another site will be targeted soon.

Firearms Amnesty - Results A three month Firearms Amnesty has resulted in 1281 guns being surrendered to WA Police. The amnesty finished on October 31 and the final figures from across WA are as follows: 131 handguns 855 rifles 240 shot guns 2 submachine guns 80,108 rounds of ammunition Licensing Enforcement Division Detective Inspector Dale Davies praised the public for supporting the amnesty. “This has been a great result for the community – more than 1200 firearms are now off the streets,” Det-Insp. Dale Davies said. “The initiative has also been an opportunity for WA Police to educate the public about laws regarding firearms.” The surrendered firearms will be cut up and destroyed, and many of the parts left over from this process have been used as raw material to create artworks through the “Of Spears and Pruning Hooks” program. The project is managed through the Edith Cowan University Art Collection and artists are selected by invitation only. Part proceeds from the sale of the artworks are donated to the Police Commissioner’s fund for sick children Bright Blue. Det-Insp. Davies urged people to contact the Firearms Call Centre on 1300 171 011 with queries regarding gun possession between 8am and 4pm on Monday to Friday. A recent report by the Auditor General found a number of firearms had not been recovered from deceased estates. Det-Insp. Davies said 202 firearms surrendered to police during the amnesty had in fact come from deceased estates.

WRITING COMPETITION Walpole Community Resource Centre will not be holding a Writing Competition this coming year due to lack of interest and support. If and when a greater interest is shown in such an event, reconsideration will be given at that time.

At an unexpected hour With subdued tone she said, “there have been too many unexpected hours this year.” Well, these were not exactly the words of the Walpole Store manager as I purchased my shopping recently, but certainly it summed up her concerned description to me of the unfortunate troubles befalling a number of residents. Illness, accident and tragic death have visited a number of our people and in several incidents, unexpectedly. The unexpected does leave a person shocked and in some cases traumatized. During the week the fiftieth anniversary of the death of President Kennedy was marked by the international media; that assassination, many of us can place in time and space upon hearing of that breaking news. Younger readers may cite the Twin Towers destruction in New York as a similar shocking event that unsettled us all so deeply – fixing the day and hour indelibly on our memory? Why does the unexpected threaten? Could it be it undercuts our assumption that all is in our control. Forcefully this question confronts me at the time of writing this, as an unforeseen and unexpected family illness threatens to dissolve all too quickly our daily schedules and plans. But I am not alone this week in thinking about the shock of the unexpected, for, globally Christians are celebrating the commencement of the season of Advent. Advent alerts us all to the shock of the unexpected appearance of Jesus Christ who wanted every generation to understand He would appear to the nations, the peoples of the world, at an unexpected hour. He used an historical example of the shock of the unexpected and consequential devastating outcome by pointing to the days of Noah and how people at that time going about their business of every day living were swept away by the catastrophic global flood. Jesus posed the problem in this way: “But understand this: if the owner of the house had known what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not let the house be broken into.” There is no heavenly version of CIA intelligence agent, Snowdon ready to leak divine secrets to humanity about that unexpected appearing of Christ the Judge. Thus the Saviour warned, “Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.” See, Matthew’s Gospel, 24, 30-44. Geoffrey Newby

The Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPaW) is today continuing prescribed burns to manage bushfire risk, for nature conservation and for forest management. Smoke may be visible from these burns: 14km south of Nannup 8km south of Pemberton 29km south-east of Manjimup 42km south-east of Manjimup 5km north of Walpole 12km east of Walpole 14km east of Walpole. Motorists should take care, turn on headlights and carefully follow traffic management signs when driving through areas affected by smoke. People with conditions exacerbated by smoke should take precautions in line with their medical advice for these circumstance. Prescribed burns create low-fuel areas in a mosaic of burnt and unburnt patches across the landscape, which help stem the spread of bushfires. Prescribed burning is the primary tool available to DPaW to manage fuel loads, which helps protect the community by minimising the impact of bushfires.

Community Health Needs Survey 2013

Thank you to everyone in the community who completed and returned the 2013 Health Needs Survey. The information gathered will enable an ongoing process of community engagement to develop a framework of Healthy Community planning, to target those areas identified as of highest need. With the appointment of a new Primary Health Centre Manager in January 2014, the plan is for Silver Chain to work with community to launch a Healthy Community Forum. Silver Chain will call for expressions of interest from community members and has already had significant interest from members of the previous Health Advisory committee to be part of this forum. The aim is to create a community-lead forum, involving allied health, health professionals and members of the public, where everyone can participate in the planning and implementation of a realistic and productive program that will benefit individuals, and the community as a whole. The ongoing vision is to identify and assist in the facilitation of services that will create a healthy community that continues to makes Walpole and surrounds a place where people wish to live and enjoy a healthy lifestyle.

These are some of the findings from the HNS: 632 surveys were sent out to Walpole residents and 298 surveys were returned. 82% of the respondents

were over the age of 50 years of age. The main Health concerns of the respondents were identified as hypertension (high blood pressure)

arthritis, high cholesterol and asthma. 19% of the respondents with asthma stated that they needed help with their condition.

The two main conditions that affected a person’s ability to perform their daily activities of living were identified as arthritis (55%) and mental health issues (29%). 38% of respondents reported that they had had feelings of sadness or depression. 73% of these respondents stated that they had had experienced suicidal thoughts and had not received any help.

72% of respondents were concerned about the use of drugs and alcohol on a personal level and in the community. 20% of respondents stated that they drank alcohol in excess of recommended levels.

From the surveys returned it was identified that the most common causes of injury were falls (52%), sports injuries (15%) and machinery and tools (11%), 65% of injuries resulted at home, 14% on the farm and 11% at work.

44% of respondents had never had a full medical check (90%) of respondents felt comfortable using the Health Service and 93% found the service warm and

friendly.

In order to address the health-related needs of the Walpole community, it is important to gain an understanding of what services may be required, both now and in the future. The results of this survey suggest that some of the most important health concerns of the community include high blood pressure, arthritis and high cholesterol. These concerns likely reflect the age of the sample, with the majority of respondents being over 50 years of age. For women, the greatest community concerns were all health-related, with the top concerns being breast examinations, bowel cancer and continence issues. Men were shown to be less concerned about health issues compared to the women with the issues of stress (such as financial and family issues), bowel cancer and family relationships ranking highest in the male community. Another health concern included the importance the respondents placed on the availability of dental services, with almost half of the survey respondents expressing that they would like dental services to become available in the Walpole community. Several major issues of concern became apparent in the results, specifically regarding mental health. Thirty eight per cent of the respondents reported feeling sad or depressed in the previous month with 73% of respondents (eight individuals) who had experienced suicidal thoughts receiving no help at all. With regards to diet, less than half of the respondents stated they adhered to the recommended

guidelines regarding dietary intake of fruit, vegetables and fish. The Walpole community is concerned with drugs and alcohol within their community with 72% unsure whether enough was being done to prevent the misuse of drugs, and added that marijuana and hashish (74%), tobacco (64%) and alcohol (64%) were the biggest problems. Also, at least 20% of respondents who drink stated they were drinking at levels in excess of the recommendations for healthy adults. Many encouraging aspects also emerged from the study. Eighty five per cent of the respondents reported themselves being in good to excellent health, with 31% reporting they had exercised six or more times in the previous two weeks. The majority reported having had health checks in the previous two years. Another encouraging aspect is that nearly all respondents were less than half an hour away from the Walpole Health Service, with 90% of respondents reporting feeling comfortable using the health services and agreeing that the health service is friendly and welcoming (93%). It is hoped that the results of this survey provide the community with a greater understanding of their health needs, and may help in targeting health services to the needs of the community.

Business After Hours celebrates 2013 with a ‘Shakedown’! The Tree Top Walk hosted the last of this year’s successful business after hours with friends and colleagues. An initiative of the Walpole and Districts Community Development Group, the business after hours provides a great opportunity for people to come together to share in news and find out more about businesses in town. Finishing the year with a crowd of sixty-five people at the Tree Top Walk it demonstrated the important role the bi-monthly get together plays. A big outcome of the evening was the $560 raised from the entry fee which Julie said would be given towards the cost of a new push bike for John Kolo and fuel cost support for Michael Filby. Julie said that these individuals made a huge contribution towards keeping Walpole and the region litter free and it was important to provide all litter volunteers with any support we can manage. “We all benefit from being litter free, tourists bring valuable dollars, people want to come here to live when they see how beautiful the place is and living in such a pristine area makes us all feel privileged.” Julie said. Once again, the Tree Top Walk staff did a great job in providing an evening of fantastic food, entertainment and laughter in a perfect setting. Business Manager Julie Ross said that it was a positive end to the year with much to celebrate and much to look forward to in the future. With nearly 3 million visitors to the Tree Top Walk since it commenced business and the multi millions of dollars it pumped into the regional communities, the Tree Top Walk had made its mark on the tourism industry. ‘Next year we will reach a fantastic milestone, an eighteenth birthday which will really see the Tree Top Walk come of age.’ she said. Julie paid tribute to her staff who creating thousands and thousands of fantastic visitor experiences. Their hard work and dedication to the business and fellow team members epitomised the very essence of an effective team which demonstrated loyalty for the product and fellow team members. A big thank you to sponsors, PR Glow Candles, IGA, WOW cruises, Tree Top Walk and Dave Tapley for providing prizes.

Trevor and Tish make up the band ‘Shakedown’ and they had toes tapping and bodies moving to the music of the 50’s and 60’s. Proceeds of the bar will go to the Walpole and Districts Community Development Group. Stay tuned for details of the first business after hours for 2014 to be hosted by the Walpole Visitor Centre.

Ashley’s therapy art to go on exhibition A local man who was involved in a tragic accident which left him with a disability 15 years ago and has used art to inspire many to look at the positive side of life, will open his second solo exhibition tomorrow. Ashley Wallrodt, from Baker’s Junction, was at a Party near Walpole as a 17-year-old when he was involved in an altercation and decided to leave. While walking along the road about 30km from Walpole, he was run down twice, the first left him with broken ribs and head injuries while the second time the car ran over his ankles. Mr Wallrodt was half way through a carpentry apprenticeship with his father when the incident occurred. Fifteen years on, Mr Wallrodt doesn’t let his injuries hold him back and has turned to making clay sculptures for enjoyment and therapy. His exhibition, which opens on Saturday at the Vancouver Arts Centre, contains about 20 pieces. “Many people don’t appreciate what they have, I’ve got a house to live in, a family and fresh air," he said. When Mr Wallrodt held a similar event last year he sold seven pieces, and his work will be for sale again this year. The show opens 11am tomorrow at the Vancouver Arts Centre.

There's been a changing of the guard late last week with premier Colin Barnett formally announcing his changes to Cabinet. The recent departure of Brendan Grylls as leader of the WA National's and Minister for Regional Development and Lands, has seen four portfolio changes made last Friday. The Honourable Terry Redman (the new leader of the Nationals) has been appointed Minister for Regional Development and Lands. Mia Davies (the new deputy WA Nationals leader) has picked up some of Minister Redman's former jobs in Water and Forestry. Kim Hames will take on Training and workforce development. And current Minister for Agriculture Ken Baston has been promoted to a senior position, adding Fisheries to his existing responsibilities. WA's state farming organisations have welcomed the changes with the Pastoralists and Graziers Association chair Rob Gillam saying its a good outcome for pastoralists who are in the final negotiation stages over lease renewals. "I think the changes that were announced were good and look I know its not that long since the last election but just a little bit of renewal in a Government at various stages though their term I don't think does much harm whatsoever," he says. WA Farmers are also pleased that the Regional Development portfolio has stayed in the hands of the Nationals. President Dale Park says its important to keep the funds to the bush flowing. "Yeah I welcome the changes, its good to see Terry Redman Minister who's going to be looking after Royalties for Regions and Regional Development," he says.

Upcoming Emergency Preparedness workshops in the South West In March 2014 communities in the South West region will be hosting a series of FREE workshops on the topic of Emergency Preparedness as part of the Emergency Care and Injury Management Project. Farmsafe WA, the organising body behind this campaign, is an independent, not-for-profit, non-government organisation which encourages and leads the way to safer lifestyles.

The Emergency Care and Injury Management project has been successfully conducted in the Midwest and Great Southern regions over the period of 2011-2013. In recognition of the project’s successes, the Department of Health, Western Australia has provided further funding to implement the workshops into the Southwest region. The project has also been recognised for its outstanding achievements by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES), being awarded the State Winner under the Not-for-Profit Sector at the 2013 Resilient Australia Awards as well as a finalist for the National title. The workshops are open for all rural community members to attend and will be presented in partnership with WA Department of Fire and Emergency Services (WA DFES), WA Police and St John Ambulance. Without the valuable support provided by these organisations, the workshops would not be possible. Conducted as a set of interactive and educational skill stations each led by the different emergency services, workshop participants will acquire knowledge and skills in topics such as emergency planning and preparedness, practical first aid skills, who to call in an emergency situation and the role of each emergency service in the community.

The host communities for the workshops will be Capel (17th March, 2-5pm), Margaret River (20th March, 2-5pm) and Augusta (22nd March, 10am-1pm) with further workshops to be conducted in Pemberton (23rd

March, 10am-1pm), Bridgetown (24th March, 2pm-5pm) and Collie (26th March, 2pm-5pm). Refreshments will be provided and all participants will receive a free safety resource show bag. Additionally, the first 20 people to register for the workshops at each location will receive a free Snake Bite or First Aid Kit, compliments of Farmsafe WA and St John Ambulance.

Farmsafe WA Alliance encourages people from all age ranges and walks of life to attend this valuable community event—at no cost it is a great opportunity to learn new skills and meet the local emergency service representatives. Registrations are now open, and with limited places available please remember to register soon!

Supported and presented by St John Ambulance, WA Police, Department of Fire and Emergency Service (DFES) and Farmsafe WA.

Farmsafe WA is coordinating an Emergency Care and Injury Prevention project funded by the Department of Health, Western Australia which will involve the delivery of a series of free community workshops throughout the South West region during March, 2014. For its outstanding achievements in previous years the project has been rec-ognised as the State Winner under the Not-for-Profit Sector at the 2013 Resilient Australia Awards. Delivered in partnership with St John Ambulance, WA Department of Fire and Emergency Services (WA DFES) and the WA Police, the work-shops will include interactive skill stations run by the different emergency services. Silence swept over the hubbub and activity at the Pioneer Park markets last Saturday morning as everyone paused for one minute’s silence in honour of emergency service volunteer and career workers who had died in the service. Memories of the tragic death of a fire fighter near Two Peoples Bay on 12 October 2012 were still fresh in people’s mind. There were other memories too as people reflected on those left to grieve. Local Anglican Priest Revd Sue Lodge-Calvert said to the emergency service workers: “As a community we want to acknowledge your dedication, skill, generosity and courage in undertaking work, paid and unpaid, that serves our community. We express our gratitude for the work done by the many agencies here represented that protects us, rescues us, and brings comfort as individuals and as a community that lives in a beautiful but remote and vulnerable part of the world.” Manjimup Shire Councillor for the South Ward, Cr David Tapley, welcomed everyone present and recalled the extra effort and long hours given by all emergency service workers (volunteer and career). Acting Superintendent Great Southern Police District Jenny O’Connell was there too. She said: “The Police are delighted to be involved. It is a very worthwhile thing to do.” There was also a Blessing of the Roads. Revd Sue Lodge-Calvert said: “That does not, itself, magically make the roads any better or safer but reflects on all who use the roads, especially at Christmas, and seeks patience, common sense and a sense of responsibility on all road users. It acknowledges the work of police men and women and, if there is accident and trauma, seeks blessings upon those who rescue and treat the injured, and all effected family and friends.” Volunteer and career workers from the local Bush Fire Service, Department of Parks and Wildlife, Silver Chain, State Emergency Service, St John Ambulance Service, Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service, Volunteer Marine Rescue Service and WA Police Force were part of a display of 12 vehicles (many heavy vehicles) including the Walpole marine rescue boat. After the ceremony the vehicles went on parade around the streets of Walpole. They were encouraged by the crowd that gathered and cheered them on the main street. The event was also part of International Volunteer Day celebrated each year on 5 December. Volunteering Australia (the national peak body for volunteering, working to advance volunteering in the Australian community) said: “It hanks the over six million Australians who volunteer their time and contribute to the economic and social development of the community at local, national and international levels.” The event was supported by the Walpole and Districts Community Resource Centre. The 2012 Walpole and Districts community consultation “Towards 2020” recognised the

significant input of volunteers in creating a safe environment for everyone. Harold Luxton, chairperson of the Walpole-Nornalup and Districts Community Development Group said: , said “he hoped the event on the nearest Saturday to International Volunteer Day in 2014 (6 December 2014) will be even better with more volunteer groups using the day to celebrate its volunteers.”

Walpole Yacht Club—10 new Life Members on Opening of Sailing Season on Saturday 1 December Life Membership Certificates were presented by Vice Commodore Matt Wrigley at recent WYC Open of 2013/2014 Sailing Season. The worthy recipients were Peter and Marlene Bidwell, Lloyd and Roslyn Burnside,

Thomas and Elizabeth Gerner, Mervyn and Debbie Hull, Robert and Stella Thompson. Life Membership were given in recognition of their great commitment to the welfare of WYC especially in the years prior to the Club’s recess. Framed photographs of The Most Senior Crew participating in the Walpole 2013 Regatta were presented to Frank Cooper, Robert Thompson and Bill Vermuelen thru a kind donation from Peter Newton. WYC has just completed a Lease ballot of our (5) 420 sailing dinghies amongst members of the yacht club that have young children already actively sailing in the club. We believe our Club’s future is safe if we support the welfare of Walpole Youth and present our club as a Community Asset.

Member Trevor Holm has recently participated in Sabre Class State Championship and proved to be a formidable competitor. We now have 64 Memberships (equivalent of 128 Family and Single units) Commodore Leah Elston was unable to attend the Opening however sent her message on the day. It read, in part. Following another great year for the Walpole Yacht Club - I find it difficult to narrow down our successes over the past year. I cannot express my gratitude enough to my volunteer committee and members - on the hard work and commitment they give every year to the club - it never stops amazing me and I thank you all truly for that.

Of course we cannot fail to mention the success of the Regatta in March 2013. On this - I would like to commend all involved - sponsors, organisers, volunteers and local participants. This event put Walpole on the map for many - and it is the Community who deserve the accolades. The club has also held throughout the year some great Junior Programs including sailing and kayaking through the Walpole Primary Schools ‘Active After School Sports’. The club’s involvement in these programs will ensure its sustainability well into the future. With the building being in its final stages of repairs -we now have more to offer members– including– a fortnightly sailing

program for active members to involve themselves in. This is something the club has not offered for many years. The future of the Walpole Yacht Club remains as always– in the hands of the community. What the committee have achieved over the year and in years past– is not possible

without community support. Submitted by the WYC.

How Millsy stopped smoking ... Steve Mills is a well known radio announcer in Perth and a lot of people wake up every week day to his earthy voice on the 6PR breakfast show. What a lot of people may not know about Steve is that he was a 40-a-day cigarette man up until the 8th of August 2007 when he met Dianne Fischer and now Steve attributes Dianne with being the reason “why I am still here to talk with you today”. Dianne is the director and senior therapist of Allen Carr’s Easyway to Stop Smoking WA. A happy non-smoker herself thanks to the Allen Carr program over seven years ago and since then she has been running the WA branch of this international company that celebrated it’s 30th anniversary last year. So what happened on the day? “I honestly didn’t expect it to work. In fact, I walked in and told Dianne how much I loved smoking and that rather than waste her time I should just go home. She said, just stay for one hour and if you still want to leave then you can.” So he did. He stayed for the whole session and throughout the session you actually smoke until a particular point when you put out your last cigarette. At this point, Steve was still a sceptic “I thought in the back of my mind, I will never see this woman again but I will go along with what she is asking and then after we finish I will go and buy another packet”. But to Steve’s surprise, he didn’t buy that packet and hasn’t bought another cigarette since. He woke up the next morning feeling “revitalised and not wanting a cigarette so I didn’t go buy any. I remember thinking, what has she done to me but I am sure that if I hadn’t stayed that hour, I would still be a smoker today.” The Allen Carr method is an all natural method with no lotions or potions and claims that you wont even have those dreaded pangs of cravings that you would if you go “cold turkey” yourself. According to Dianne it is a cognitive behavioural method that subtly changes the beliefs you have around cigarettes as you go through the one day program. “All smokers know the health scares and know that they shouldn’t smoke. Smokers aren’t stupid. So we look at the reasons why they still do smoke and once you the know the reasons why, then it is easy to change those beliefs” says Dianne. “What struck me was that I was convinced that I loved smoking and that I enjoyed them, that I enjoyed every little puff and that I could never give it up and what Dianne taught me was that was all a myth”. Although the method has an over 90% success rate, not everyone succeeds. Dianne says “There is never going to be one method that works for every single person as everyone is different. That is why we offer the guarantee, if you are in the small percentage of those that it doesn’t work for then you haven’t lost anything and what we find is that those few usually go on to use the tools we gave them to help them stop in the future.” Dianne will be in Walpole on Sunday 15th so if you would like to become a happy non-smoker like Millsy before Christmas then give them a call 1300 557 801 www.allencarr.com.au
