It's Mini-Demo Night! October 8, 2013 is our Mini-Demo Night at OCQG. This promises to be a really fun evening, as several of our very own members will be demonstrating techniques and providing some hints on different quilting and sewing methods. We're going to have the chance to refresh our memories about some techniques we already know, and learn some brand new ones. Our presenters will be Patti Payne (working with wool), Carolyn Erratt (making small zippered bags), Pam Schoenbachler (Sylvia Davis' 20-Minute Baby Blanket with a redesigned pattern), Pam Gayle (Kim Diehl's prep techniques for easy applique), and Sandy Milo (how to make blocks for our next President's Quilt project). We will also get to enjoy a short slide show of some fun photos from Camp Watch-a-Patcher! Please be sure to come and enjoy the evening with us. The more the merrier! Thanks, Betsy Weisman

I love fall because I enjoy wearing sweaters and sleeping under a quilt. The string of 100 degree days we have had lately are anything but my vision of fall weather. Fall also means that it is time to start making a list and checking it twice so that I can be organized for December. I have started making gifts and my secret hiding place for gifts is beginning to fill up. There is such a sense of satisfaction when the last stitch is made knowing that the hours spent on a gift will be appreciated by the recipient. The process of creating gifts adds to the excitement of Christmas.
Our program this month lends itself to gift making I will be doing a little demo so I will miss out on what everyone else is teaching. I will rely on friends to teach me what I miss. My demo comes with a drawing. Write your name on a piece of paper and then put the name of one of my 3 cats on it and bring it to my demo table. The winner of the drawing will receive my demo sample wristlet.
This is also the time of the year that we need to make a quilt for Guide Dogs to raffle off next year. Ideally we would like to present it at our January meeting. So, we need a volunteer to head up this effort. The last Guide Dog Quilt we made to donate was a darling Buggy Barn Pattern and it was put together in a weekend by a small committee. It does not need to be an elaborate quilt but a dog theme would be appreciated by Otto. I am sure even my kitties, Puffin, Cricket and Chili would appreciate a doggy quilt. Please send me an e-mail or talk to me at the meeting if you can help.
QUILT SHOW! Kat Benne and Cindy Davis are putting together an incredible plan for the quilt show. I can’t wait to attend the wine preview night and have a chance to view the quilts. The next quilt show meeting is Tuesday October 15th at 7pm. Join us!

2014 OC Dreamin’ Quilt Show
The 2014 OC Dreamin’ Quilt Show is in the works. There are many people who are
putting a great amount of time into getting the show going. We do need some people
to fill in some blanks. We are in need of a chairperson for Vendors, Garage Sale, and
White Glove. You don’t need to feel that you have to do the position by yourself. Find
a friend and co-chair with them. If you have any questions, please email or call Cindy
Davis or Kat Benne. We will be glad to talk with you. We would also like to invite
everyone to come to the Guild Meetings on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. We have
snacks and a great time.
Thank you in advance.
Kat Benne and Cindy Davis
DONATIONS FOR QUILT SHOW OPPORTUNITY BASKETS
Beginning in October we will be accepting donations for the Opportunity Baskets
for the 2014 Quilt Show. We will have baskets based on several themes
including: animal prints; kitchen; think pink; patriotic; red, white and black;
and many others. New for this year will be a basket for kids, one for the guys,
and a basic sewing kit for those new to sewing or quilting (of course inspired by
the many quilts they will see in the show!). There will be a table at the guild
meetings starting this month to accept your donations. Please no scraps or
small cut pieces unless it is a layer cake, charm pack or jelly roll etc. All fabric
donations should be at least ¼ yard WOF or a fat quarter. Watch the newsletter
each month for any special needs. Questions can be sent via email to Susi
McLane at [email protected] or by leaving a message on my home
phone 714-490-0391. Thanks for your support!
Congratulations to Betsy Weisman on her new granddaughter.
Freya Rose was born on 9/15. The proud parents are Betsy's daughter Amy and her
husband Ted and her big sis Lily is so excited to meet her new best friend.

UFO Challenge
The fourth and final UFO was due at the Sept meeting. We had 62 projects
finished with this challenge. Marilyn Fredrickson won a beautiful fat quarter
pack of dotted fabrics in the drawing for the fourth UFO completion and
Carolyn Erratt won a jellyroll in the drawing for those that finished all four of
their projects. All who participated were winners because their UFO pile is
smaller!!!

Quilts For Children
This month Philanthropy will be hosting the workshop at Orange Quilt Bee on
Wednesday October 9th from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm. The theme will be “Stars and
Stripes”…which means that we’ll be making simple star blocks and simple blocks from
2.5”strips. Some of them will be patriotic to go to Quilts for Vets and some will be
regular fabrics. Fabric kits will be provided for each of the blocks. Just bring your
sewing machines and basic sewing supplies. The hope is that we can all work together
and get two or three (or more?) lap size tops assembled before the day is over.
Snacks and prizes throughout the day. Make plans to join us. Can’t come for the
whole day? A couple of hours is okay too.
We still need more volunteers to quilt (simple meandering) some existing quilt
tops and quilts that are appropriate for boys. How about either making a quilt out of
your own fabric or by picking up a kit from the philanthropy table at the meeting?
Do you just want to do a bunch of blocks? How about 4 patches or 9-patches from
2.5” strips in browns, blues, and tans/neutrals. Or make some magic 9-patches using
6” blocks as a starter. What would your grandchild like?
We have plenty of fabric to liquidate (it’s almost overwhelming), so stop by and help
us out. Thank you to those gals who picked up a kit to sew or quilt tops to quilt. I’ll
try and have more simple block kits available this month for those who do not want
to follow a pattern.
Thanks for sharing your time and treasure.
Pam Gayle

October 2013 Block Party
Crazy Eights
Unfinished block 12 ½ inches
Fabrics: Background beige or off white tone on tone
Main fabric: Greens – light, dark, medium. Whatever green you like
Cutting:
Background fabric cut 4 - 3 ½ squares
Green fabric cut 4 - 3 ½ inch squares
4 - 3 ½ x 6 ½ inch rectangles
Sew one background square and one green square together. This should
measure 6 ½ inches when finished. Sew that unit to the 6 ½ inch
rectangle. Make 4 units. Sew units together to make the number eight.
How it works: Make one to five blocks using pattern and colors suggested. Do not write on or sign blocks. If you
wish to identify your block, place a sicker on the back with your name on it. Bring your completed blocks to the
meeting. You’ll get one ticket for every block you make. The tickets will go into a container for the drawing.
Amount of blocks will vary based on how many are turned in each meeting.
You may contact me via email if you have any questions. [email protected]
