History of Coffee

• The history of coffee goes far back as the 10th century with a number of reports & legends about its first use

• Native origin of coffee is thought to have been Ethiopia

• Earliest authenticated evidence of either coffee drinking or knowledge of the coffee tree is from the 15th century, in the Sufi monasteries of Yemen

• By the 16th century, it had reached the rest of the Middle East, Persia, Turkey, Horn of Africa, & northern Africa

• Coffee then spread to the Balkans, Italy & to the rest of Europe, to

Indonesia & then to America

Types of Coffee Beans

The 2 varieties of coffee beans differ in taste, growing conditions & price

• Arabica is a milder & a less bitter coffee with tones of sugar,

fruit & berries

• Arabica coffee beans grow in mountainous climates

• Acidity is high with a winey taste that characterizes coffee with

excellent acidity

•  Arabica is also grown in Africa & Papua New Guinea, but it's

grown dominantly in Latin America

• Has a strong, harsh taste with grain-like overtones & peanut

aftertaste

• Higher caffeine content than Arabica coffee beans

• Generally considered to be of an inferior quality to Arabica

• Easier to grow & can flourish at lower altitudes

• Used for instant coffees & as a filler for cheap ground coffee blends

• Robusta is grown exclusively in the Eastern Hemisphere, primarily in

Africa & Indonesia

• Before the roasting process coffee beans are green, they turn brown later

• Once roasted they should be used as quickly as possible before the fresh roast flavor begins to diminish

• Roasting brings out the aroma & flavor that is locked inside the green coffee beans

• Roasts fall into one of four color categories — light, medium, medium-dark or dark

The Most Expensive Coffee in the world

• Kopi Luwak is the most expensive coffees in the world

• Main factor of it’s high price is the uncommon method of producing

such a coffee

• It has been produced from the coffee beans which have been digested

by a certain Indonesian cat-like animal called palm civet or also civet

cat

• Kopi luwak is also called cat poop coffee or civet cat coffee

• The feces of this cat will be collected, finished & sold as Kopi Luwak

Some facts about coffee

• Coffee is the 2nd most traded commodity on earth

• Coffee is actually a fruit, they are actually pits of a cherry-like berry • According to many historians, coffee was first discovered by a herd of

goats. An Ethiopian herder discovered a bean making his goats crazy in 9th century which was later termed as coffee beans

•  Coffee was the 1st food to be freeze-dried

• The majority of coffee is produced in Brazil (40%)

• The largest cup of coffee ever brewed was in July 2014 in South Korea

which was over 3,700 gallons• The largest iced coffee ever brewed was in Las Vegas in 2010, & was

1,500 gallons — ice not included

International Coffee Day

• An annual event observed on Sept 29 in a handful of countries for

celebration & enjoyment of the popular beverage

• This day is also used to promote fair trade coffee & to raise awareness for

the plight of the coffee growers

• Many businesses around the world offer free or discounted cups of coffee

• Some businesses share coupons & special deals with their loyal followers

via social networking

• Some greeting card companies sell National Coffee Day greeting cards as

well as free e-cards to help celebrate the occasion
