IT’S CARNIVAL !!!

Carnival is a festive season which occurs

immediately before Lent. The main events

are usually during February. Carnival

typically involves a public celebration or

parade combining some elements of Circus,

mask and public street party.

People often dress up as a masked man

during the celebration, which is an

overturning of the normal things of everyday

life.

Rio de Janeiro’s carnival, Brazil, is

considered the biggest carnival in the world.

In Italy the most important carnival

celebrations are in Venice, Viareggio,

Putignano and in Sicily, Acireale and Sciacca.

History

The Lenten period of Liturgical year

Church calendar, being the six weeks

directly before Easter, was marked by

fasting and other pious or penitential

practices. Traditionally during Lent, no

parties or other celebration were held,

and people refrained from eating rich

foods, such as meet, dairy, fats and

sugar.

In the days before Lent, all rich food had to be disposed of. The

consumption of this, in a giant party that involved the whole community, is

thought to be the origin of Carnival.

The Italian carnival is sometimes thought

to be derived from the ancient Roman

festivals of Saturnalia and Bacchanalia,

maybe based on the Greek Dionysia and

Oriental festivals.

The name comes from the latin “carnem levare”,

meaning “to remove meat”, since meat is

prohibited during Lent. However, carnival

is celebrated before Lent, as it ends on Ash

Wednesday.

“Fat Tuesday” is the last day before Ash

Wednesday and our students celebrate Carnival

at school, they wear a mask and have a party with

music, dance and traditional cakes. In Italy there

are a lot of typical masks, there is at least one in every

region…
