its a wood world
TRANSCRIPT
Fuel from wood? At KTH, we are developing a new type of fuel cell that uses biomass from
forestry as fuel. With the development of carbon fiber from trees, we can also make strong
lightweight materials for airplanes and cars that will decrease the energy consumption.

The consumption of textiles is increasing in the world and the environmental issues related
with cotton production are massive. Since wood is a plentiful and renewable material
source, we are researching the best ways to make textile fibers from wood.

A food container today can consist of a mix of materials such as plastics, metals and paper.
We are developing wood based coatings and materials so that packages are all wood. We are
also working with natural hydrogels to make your ice cream melt slower!

Wood based materials are today used as drug carriers in medicine. Tomorrow, we could
have smart carriers that are targeted to treat the affected organ only or release drugs slowly
in the body. For antibacterial purposes, we are developing paper products that do not give
rise to resistant bacteria and that cause minimal environmental damage.

What do we get out of wood today? And
how will we use it tomorrow? That is
what the department of Wood Chemistry
and Pulp Technology at KTH is working
on. And the answer might surprise you.
’It’s a wood world’ is about challenging
your preconceptions. Each wood figure
