The circulatory system

Also known as the cardiovascular system, yourheart, blood vessels and blood itself are threeessential components the body needs to survive. The circulatory system consists of two circuitsthat blood travels through; pulmonary andsystemic.

The pulmonary circuit carries blood to the lungsto be oxygenated and then back to the heart. Inthe lungs, carbon dioxide is removed from theblood, and oxygen taken up by the haemoglobinin the red blood cells.

The systemic circuit carries blood around thebody to deliver the oxygen and returns de-oxygenated blood to the heart. Blood alsocarries nutrients and waste.

The nervous systemThe nervous system is a complex network ofnerves and cells that carry messages to andfrom the brain and spinal cord to various partsof the body.

The nervous system includes both the Centralnervous system and Peripheral nervoussystem. The Central nervous system is madeup of the brain and spinal cord and ThePeripheral nervous system is made up of theSomatic and the Autonomic nervous systems. The central nervous system functions to sendsignals from one cell to others, or from onepart of the body to others and to receivefeedback. Malfunction of the nervous systemcan occur as a result of genetic defects, physical damage due to trauma or toxicity, infection or simply of ageing.

Muscular system

The muscular system is responsible for the movement ofthe human body. Attached to the bones of the skeletalsystem are about 700 named muscles that make uproughly half of a person’s body weight. Each of thesemuscles is a discrete organ constructed of skeletalmuscle tissue, blood vessels, tendons, and nerves.Muscle tissue is also found inside of the heart, digestiveorgans, and blood vessels. In these organs, musclesserve to move substances throughout the body.

Muscle Types

There are three types of muscle tissue: Visceral, cardiac, and skeletal.

Visceral muscle is found inside of organs like thestomach, intestines, and blood vessels.

Cardiac Muscle. Found only in the heart, cardiac muscleis responsible for pumping blood throughout the body.

Skeletal muscle is the only voluntary muscle tissue in thehuman body—it is controlled consciously.

Immune System

The immune system is our body's defense system against infectionsand diseases. Organs, tissues, cells, and cell products work togetherto respond to dangerous organisms (like viruses or bacteria) andsubstances that may enter the body from the environment. There arethree types of response systems in the immune system: the anatomicresponse, the inflammatory response, and the immune response.

The anatomic response physically prevents threatening substancesfrom entering your body. Examples of the anatomic system include themucous membranes and the skin. If substances do get by, theinflammatory response goes on attack.

The inflammatory system works by excreting the invaders from yourbody. Sneezing, runny noses, and fever are examples of theinflammatory system at work. Sometimes, even though you don't feelwell while it's happening, your body is fighting illness.

When the inflammatory response fails, the immune response goes towork. This is the central part of the immune system and is made up ofwhite blood cells, which fight infection by gobbling up antigens. Abouta quarter of white blood cells, called the lymphocytes, migrate to thelymph nodes and produce antibodies, which fight disease.

Lymphatic system

The lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organsthat help rid the body of toxins, waste and otherunwanted materials. The primary function of thelymphatic system is to transport lymph, a fluidcontaining infection-fighting white blood cells, throughout the body.

The lymphatic system primarily consists of lymphaticvessels, which are similar to the circulatory system'sveins and capillaries. The vessels are connected tolymph nodes, where the lymph is filtered. The tonsils, adenoids, spleen and thymus are all part of thelymphatic system.

Unlike blood, which flows throughout the body in acontinue loop, lymph flows in only one direction —upward toward the neck. Lymphatic vessels connect totwo subclavian veins, which are located on either sides ofthe neck near the collarbones, and the fluid re-entersthe circulatory system, according to the Mayo Clinic.

the digestive system

The digestive system is a group of organs working together to convert food into energy andbasic nutrients to feed the entire body. Food passes through a long tube inside the bodyknown as the alimentary canal or the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract). The alimentary canal ismade up of the oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestines, and largeintestines. In addition to the alimentary canal, there are several important accessory organsthat help your body to digest food but do not have food pass through them. Accessoryorgans of the digestive system include the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. To achieve the goal of providing energy and nutrients to the body, six majorfunctions take place in the digestive system:

Ingestion

Secretion

Mixing and movement

Digestion

Absorption

Excretion

The respiratory system

The cells of the human body require a constantstream of oxygen to stay alive. The respiratorysystem provides oxygen to the body’s cells whileremoving carbon dioxide, a waste product that canbe lethal if allowed to accumulate. There are 3 majorparts of the respiratory system:

the airway, the lungs, and the muscles of respiration.

The airway, which includes the nose, mouth, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and bronchioles, carries air between the lungs and the body’sexterior. The lungs act as the functional units of therespiratory system by passing oxygen into the bodyand carbon dioxide out of the body.

Finally, the muscles of respiration, including thediaphragm and intercostal muscles, work togetherto act as a pump, pushing air into and out of thelungs during breathing.

The endocrine systemThe endocrine system includes all of theglands of the body and the hormonesproduced by those glands. The glandsare controlled directly by stimulationfrom the nervous system as well as bychemical receptors in the blood andhormones produced by other glands. Byregulating the functions of organs in thebody, these glands help to maintain thebody’s homeostasis. Cellularmetabolism, reproduction, sexualdevelopment, sugar and mineralhomeostasis, heart rate, and digestionare among the many processesregulated by the actions of hormones.

The integumentary system

The human body's largest organ is the integumentary system, which includes the skin, hair, nails, glands and nerve receptors.

The integumentary system works to waterproof, cushion andprotect the body from infection, according to the NationalInstitutes of Health. Most skin is waterproof because of keratin, afibrous protein, and it also is made up of water, other proteins, lipids and different minerals and chemicals.

Skin excretes wastes, regulates temperature and preventsdehydration by controlling the level of perspiration. It also housessensory receptors that detect pain, sensation and pressure.

The skin is also the body's initial defense against bacteria, virusesand other microbes. Skin and hair provide protection fromharmful ultraviolet radiation, and the skin guards against sunburnby secreting melanin, according to the American Academy ofDermatology (AAD). Human skin color is determined by theinteraction of melanin, carotene and hemoglobin.

Storage of water, fat, glucose and vitamin D is also a function ofthe integumentary system, according to the AAD.

Skeletal system

The skeletal system includes all of the bones and joints inthe body. Each bone is a complex living organ that is madeup of many cells, protein fibers, and minerals. Theskeleton acts as a scaffold by providing support andprotection for the soft tissues that make up the rest ofthe body.

The skeletal system also provides attachment points formuscles to allow movements at the joints. New blood cellsare produced by the red bone marrow inside of ourbones. Bones act as the body’s warehouse for calcium, iron, and energy in the form of fat. Finally, the skeletongrows throughout childhood and provides a frameworkfor the rest of the body to grow along with it.

The skeletal system’s cell matrix acts as our calcium bankby storing and releasing calcium ions into the blood asneeded. Proper levels of calcium ions in the blood areessential to the proper function of the nervous andmuscular systems.

Reproductive System

The reproductive system is a collection of internal and external organs— in both males and females — that work together for the purpose ofprocreating, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Due to its vital role inthe survival of the species, many scientists argue that the reproductivesystem is among the most important systems in the entire body.

The human reproductive system usually involves internal fertilization bysexual intercourse. During this process, the male inserts his erect penisinto the female's vagina and ejaculates semen, which contains sperm. Asmall portion of the sperm pass through the cervix into the uterus, andthen into the fallopian tubes for fertilization of the ovum. Only onesperm is required to fertilize the ovum. Upon successful fertilization, the fertilized ovum, or zygote, travels out of the fallopian tube and intothe uterus, where it implants in the uterine wall. This marks thebeginning of gestation, better known as pregnancy, which continuesfor nine months as the fetus develops. When the fetus has developedto a certain point, pregnancy is concluded with childbirth or labor.During labor, the muscles of the uterus contract and the cervix dilatesover the course of hours, and the baby passes out of the vagina

Urinary system

The urinary system consists of thekidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, andurethra. The kidneys filter the blood toremove wastes and produce urine. Theureters, urinary bladder, and urethratogether form the urinary tract, whichacts as a plumbing system to drain urinefrom the kidneys, store it, and thenrelease it during urination. Besidesfiltering and eliminating wastes from thebody, the urinary system also maintainsthe homeostasis of water, ions, pH,blood pressure, calcium and red bloodcells.
