BUSHFIRE RECOVERY SELF DRIVE GOLF TOUR

During the horrendous and ferocious 2019/20 Australian Bushfire Crisis, more than 12.6 million

hectares burned. Nearly half of that was in New South Wales. Almost 65% of the Far South Coast

was burnt. Tragically 33 people and over 1 billion animals were killed throughout Australia. Many

Australians lost their homes, their businesses and all of their possessions. During this terrifying and

tragic time, for many, their local golf club became their evacuation point and safe haven. These golf

clubs opened their clubhouses, fairways and driving ranges to evacuees. Clubhouses and their

kitchens were manned around the clock to ensure everyone was safe and fed. Fairways were turned

into safe campgrounds and driving nets into makeshift stables for animals.

Help support these clubs, and their local communities by visiting these regions, playing on their golf

courses and sharing a drink, or two with some of the locals who survived Australia’s most

devastating bushfires on record.

pets. Many staff stayed at the club around the clock to assist evacuees, whilst their own homes

were being threatened.

The Catalina Country Club in Batemans Bay had rows of caravans, 4x4s, pick-up trucks and tents

pitched cheek by jowl along her fairways during the 2019/20 Bushfire Crisis. The golf club's dining

room was converted into an evacuation centre, and instead of players sipping a beer after a round of

golf, elderly displaced locals huddled around cups of tea and played cards to pass the time. Stacks of

donations - food, clothing, water were piled high and there was a steady stream of people walking in

and out.

MOGO & TOMAKIN

Inland Mogo was originally a gold rush town, and is now famous for the Mogo Zoo. Seaside Tomakin

epitomises South Coast charm.

This 9 hole Par 3 golf course evacuated on New Year’s Eve at 11:15am believing the bottom part of

the course was ablaze, as they watched fire crowning 30+ metres into the air from what they

thought were a couple of large gum trees around the 3rd and 6th greens. Luckily though, that was

not the case. It turned out those swirls were from trees a couple hundred metres up the road, which

shows just how ferocious the fire was. Although they dodged bullets by not being ‘directly’ affected

by the fires (it did come within a road width), they are now counting the cost. They had no electricity

for 10 days negating the irrigation system and were also cut off completely due to road closures, for

considerable amounts of time during this period. The sole proprietor and part time greenkeeper do

not have the resources of a club. So in between preparing and defending their own homes, the

ferocious fires, wild weather and then heavy rain fall, they’ve been pretty flat out trying to keep the

course and business afloat.

For several harrowing days over the new year period, Moruya Golf Club was isolated from the world as the Clyde Mountain and Badga’s Road fires ripped through a large swathe of south-east NSW. With a tourist evacuation order in place, but all roads closed Moruya Golf Club opened the clubs fairways to scores of holidaymakers in cars, campervans and trailers. Sadly, however, the goodwill extended by the club has impacted their course and clubhouse, leaving them with a considerable tidy up bill. The evacuees left behind plenty of mess, and a number of greens needing immediate repairs.

During the 2019/20 Bushfire Crisis, Tuross Head Country Club was established as an evacuation

centre. For 4 days they had no power, but issued an open invitation to evacuees to shelter there.

They accepted animals as well as humans, and had ducks, horses, guinea pigs, cats and dogs. The

horses were stabled in the driving nets, and people were camping on the fairways.

Bermagui Country Club was an evacuation point for hundreds of evacuees on New Year's Eve as the

giant Badga Forest Road fire bore down on the nearby village of Cobargo. Although the evacuees

were safe, the fire claimed seven lives, and destroyed the CBD of Cobargo in the process. The Club

was the refuge point for some 2500 evacuees and firefighters over the course of the 2019/20

Bushfire Crisis. The Club was commandeered as the RFS Command Headquarters on January 2. All

local firefighters stayed onsite, and the Club provided meals daily & lunch packs for the crews for the

seven days.

Tura Beach Country Club became a temporary home to around four hundred evacuees at the height

of the crisis. Tura Beach was the only facility in the area that accepted pets, which ranged from

dogs, cats, birds and bunny rabbits. Staff and kitchen caterers manned the kitchen around the clock

to ensure the evacuees were fed for the two days.

Eden Country Club is part of the larger club, the Eden Fishing and recreation Club, and both entities

were already in difficult financial circumstances prior to the arrival of the fires in December. While

the 2019/20 Bushfire Crisis drama was unfolding, the Country Club was closed to focus on the

immediate emergency. In the days and weeks that followed, with demand for rounds low and the

holiday population all but gone, a decision was taken to only open the golf clubhouse on select days.

It was a devastating blow for a business that, like so many up and down the coast, relies heavily on

this holiday time of year for much of its income.
