Coincidence counting is one of the most important techniques used in Quantum and Particle Physics. In the schematic diagram shown, the outputs from Single Photon Counting Modules (SPCMs) are processed by two 74ACT74 dual D-Type positive edge-triggered flip-flops which perform pulse stretching and coincidence counting. The pulse width into each Veeder-Root A103-000 counter should be adjusted to 15μs. The A103-008 allows counting to happen for a preset amount of time.

Quantum dots are nanoscale semiconductors whose conducting characteristics are closely related to the size and shape of the individual crystal. Quantum dots can contain one electron and one “hole” (the absence of an electron). These electrons and holes act like small particles which can move freely inside the semiconductor, but cannot get out (just like a particle in a box). Their behavior can be be described very precisely by Schrodinger's equation, making them real-world particles-in-a-box suitable for performing experiments in quantum mechanics.

ThermOptics’ DN1221 subminiature Bipolar Temperature Controller for Thermoelectric Coolers (TEC) designed to operate with a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor.

I have used this TEC controller as described in my book to sense the temperature of a Single-Photon Avalanche Detector (SPAD) attached to a Peltier thermoelectric cooler.

The temperature for the DN1221 controller is set with a user selected resistor. Temperature stability of 0.01°C is achieved by the linear PI control loop of the DN1221.

I described the use of these in my book to listen to single photons (demonstration of the particle-nature of light)

The RCA 6655A PMT has ten dynodes which multiply a single photoelectron into secondary electrons at the anode when operated at +1,000V. You can increase the voltage beyond +1,000V, and operate the PMT safely at +1,250V, but be careful not to exceed its absolute maximum voltage of +1,600V.

The PMT probe in a die-cast aluminum box. The PMT and its magnetic shield fit snugly within a 10cm-long piece of aluminum optical instrument construction rail (66mm profile, Thorlabs model XT66-100). A matching face plate (Thorlabs model XT66SM2) screws to the 66mm-profile rail from outside the aluminum box. It is used as a convenient, light-tight interface to other optical components. The plate is

sealed against the metallic enclosure with black RTV silicone caulking. All other possible light leakage paths around the PMT are sealed with black electrician’s tape. There is enough room inside the box to accommodate the PMT’s tube socket, resistor divider, capacitors, potentiometers, and coaxial connectors. The bottom cover for the enclosure has a blind hole in the center and tapped it to ¼”-20 so that you may mount the probe on a standard camera tripod or on an optical table post.

The PMT probe outputs a very fast, negative-going pulse every time that a photoelectron is produced at the photocathode. The amplifier's input is configured as an inverting charge-sensitive amplifier, which is one of the most common ways of detecting signals from a PMT’s anode. The positive-going pulses coming from the charge-sensitive preamplifier are turned into a Gaussian pulse by first differentiating (high-pass filtering) and then integrating (low-pass filtering) them by the circuits. Pulses are further amplified and a comparator is used to convert pulses over a preset threshold into inverse-logic digital pulses that indicate a photon strike. This stage gets rid of small-amplitude pulses caused by thermal noise in the PMT, and is commonly known as a discriminator in physics instrumentation. Lastly, the pulses are stretched by a one-shot to provide an audible “click” through the piezo speaker. I added a buffer amplifier so that the amplifier’s analog signal may be observed on an oscilloscope. In addition, there is an output from the discriminator to trigger other data acquisition equipment.

2.2 Experimental Cooled Photomultiplier Photon Detector PRICE: $225 + SHIPPING: Please contact me for rates

Cooled photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) offer lower dark currents and stabilized responsivity compared to room-temperature PMTs. In the dark and at room temperature, the dominant mode of photocathode emission is thermionic, so cooling down the photocathode drastically reduces the noise and dark counts from a PMT. I constructed this thermoelectrically-cooled housing to experiment with cooling a standard 2” face-on PMT, and achieved one order of magnitude reduction in noise with good external dissipation (large boxer fans, not included).

For cooling, I use four 2-stage TEC modules, each with the following specifications:

• Qmax =30.0 Watts • Imax =7.2 Amps @ 12 VDC • ΔTmax= 83°C • Dimensions: 40 mm × 40 mm × 6.9 mm

I placed one K-type and one T-Type thermocouple in good thermal contact with the construction rail at the location of the PMT’s cathode. The thermocouples are held in contact with the rail using Kapton tape, and a dab of Artic Silver epoxy was used to ensure proper thermal contact. I used aerogel sheets to thermally insulate the PMT assembly from the aluminum blocks and die-cast enclosure, and sprayed expanding foam insulation into all cavities prior to closing the enclosure. The PMT is an RCA 6655A inside a CoNetic shield. Coupling to the photon source to be measured is done through a Thorlabs 2" SM2 threaded block. I keep the input aperture covered with light-tight tape to prevent degrading the PMT. The PMT's face is clean. PMT bias is +1,250 VDC. Output is separate from bias.

Thorn EMI ETL Model 9226-4 harsh-environment, high-temperature photomultiplier tube PMT. TESTED, WORKS

Designed for operation in high-temperature environments (up to 150 degrees C !) with very high quantum efficiency and low dark counts. Used to directly couple to 2" diameter NaI(Tl) crystals for oil-well logging and gas prospecting. Dynode resistor chain is completely enclosed within the photomultiplier housing. +1.6kV bias required.

The PMT for sale was used in lab environment for the development of oil well logging spectrum analysis scintillation probes.

You could use to make a DIY scintillation probe for prospecting, mine exploration, natural gas prospecting, Helium gas prospecting, oil well logging, general-purpose gamma radiation spectroscopy, industrial x-ray systems, Farnsworth fusor, etc.

The DT-590A/PDR-56F is a specialized scintillation probe that is used for detecting plutonium contamination.

In addition to emitting 5.1 MeV alpha particles, the element Plutonium-239 also emits gamma rays in the energy range of 14 to 21 keV. Because these gamma rays are more penetrating than the alpha particles, they travel further in matter and air and can be detected at further distances from the ground.

The DT590A/PDR-56F "Plutonium-239 Contamination X-Ray Probe” probe for the AN/PDR-56 uses a CaF2(Eu) scintillator/photomultiplier combination to detect the 14-21 keV gammas from Pu-239. The x-ray probe is an assembly which includes the amplifier-discriminator circuits integral to the phototube scintillator housing. The discriminator is a single channel analyzer adjusted to detect Pu-239 gamma rays.

The probe is connected to a driver that I designed based on the original AN/PDR-56 Radiac.

Although the probe is designed specifically for detecting the 14 to 21 keV gamma lines emitted by Plutonium-239 along with its main alpha-particle emissions, it is very easy to open the detection window (two potentiometers inside the probe) to turn it into a very sensitive general-purpose scintillation radiation detector. Europium doped calcium fluoride CaF2(Eu) is a low density scintillation crystal with a high light output. Thanks to its low Z value it is well suited for the detection of low-energy gamma photons (“x-rays”). On the other hand, NaI(Tl) scintillation crystals are used in most standard applications for detection of gamma-radiation because of their unequaled high light output and the excellent match of the emission spectrum to the sensitivity of photomultiplier tubes, resulting in a good energy resolution.

This is a tested, stationary-anode X-ray tube removed from a podiatry-type x-ray machine. The high voltage transformer in the machine had stopped working, and client did not want to repair.

The tube is similar to a Canon Electron Tubes D-205B. It is designed specifically for dental and portable medical x-ray units. The tube has a focal point of 2mm and is rated for a MAXIMUM of 100 kV at 10 mA.

The GEO-310 was designed by George Dowell (K0FF from GCE Geiger Counter Enthusiasts group) using a special Russian tube specifically made to withstand the lesser pressures at higher altitudes for prospector's way up in the mountains.

I built this charge-sensitive amplifier/shaper/discriminator using new (back then) AmpTek A203 and A206 modules. Unit works great! A203 and A206 are on sockets, so they can be harvested for a different configuration (e.g. use in a Cubesat, high-altitude balloon, or other military/aerospace application).

Models A-203 and A-206 are a Charge Sensitive Preamplifier/Shaping Amplifier and a matching Voltage Amplifier/Low Level Discriminator developed especially for instrumentation employing solid state detectors, proportional counters, photomultipliers, or any charge producing detectors in the pulse height analysis or pulse counting mode of operation.

Gaussian shaping amplifiers are also known as ‘pulse amplifiers’, ‘linear amplifiers’, or ‘spectroscopy amplifiers’ in the general literature. They accept a step-like input pulse and produce an output pulse shaped like a Gaussian function (bell curve). On 23 March 1989 Professors Fleischmann and Pons announced that the generation of excess enthalpy occurs in electrochemical cells when palladium electrodes, immersed in D2O + LiOH electrolyte, are negatively polarized. The announcement, which came to be known as “Cold Fusion,” caused frenzied excitement. The concept did not pan out as a way of easily extracting plentiful energy, and quite a bit of fringe research muddied the waters.

However, anomalous nuclear reactions do take place when deuterium is electrochemically compressed in a palladium lattice. The US Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) has been

conducting experiments to understand the nature of these Low-Energy Nuclear Reactions (LENR) using a co-deposition technique, whereby the palladium is electroplated from a Palladium Chloride solution onto a substrate. The applied current is adjusted to deposit palladium in the presence of evolving deuterium. The codeposition process creates a set of conditions that favor the rapid initiation of LENR. These conditions include rapid absorption of deuterium by palladium and burst-like activities.

The Sony XC-Ei50 are amazing near-IR-to-near-UV ruggedized cameras that are commonly used for machine-vision applications requiring a 1/2 Format interlaced analog CCD camera. Images from these cameras are superb.

The cameras are very compact, so parallax and alignment are not a problem for sufficiently distant targets. Since the cameras and lenses are identical, you could use a prism/mirror system to have a single optical input an eliminate parallax completely.

"The FLiR Dev Kit includes a breakout as well as a Lepton® longwave infrared (LWIR) imager. With this kit you will be able to bring FLiR's thermal imaging reliability and power to your Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or any ARM based development tool all in an easy to access breadboard friendly package. All you need to do to get this kit set up, simply attach the Lepton® imager module into the provided breakout, connect the headers, and you will be seeing in full darkness in no time!

The Lepton® LWIR module included in each FLiR Dev Kit acts as a sort of camera and packs a resolution of 80 × 60 pixels into a camera body that is smaller than a dime and captures infrared radiation input in its nominal response wavelength band (from 8 to 14 microns) and outputs a uniform thermal image. Meanwhile, each breakout board in these kits provides the socket for the Lepton®, power supply's, 25Mhz Crystal Oscillator, 100 mil header for use in a breadboard or wiring to any host system. A few things to consider about this kit: the breakout board will accept a 3-5V input and regulate it to what the Lepton® wants, to read an image from the lepton

This is a high-power 365 nm UV light that I built to make it possible to take UV photographs at much higher camera speeds (important when shooting outdoors or handheld). It is described in my book:

UV camera/lens/filters NOT INCLUDED!

Converted DSLR cameras are rather insensitive to UV, so LED-based illumination sources for photography need to be much stronger than those used in cheap blacklight LED flashlights. Fortunately, very high-power LED arrays that are perfect for the task have been made commercially available in recent years. This lamp uses an 11W, 365 nm LED array by LedEngin This LED operates at a current of 700 mA to produce an optical power output of 1.8 W.

The LED dissipates a large amount of heat, so I mount it on an Ohmite S Series LED heatsink. To power the LED I use a 700mA constant-current driver. It is powered from a 12 V pack (8 AA batteries) by boosting its input over the driver’s 15 V minimum with a DC/DC converter. The circuit, including a 12V pack made of 8 AA batteries fits nicely inside a Pelican 1010 Micro Case.

I use this UV illuminator to help me focus and to increase shutter speed. It easily attaches to a camera through a ¼" flash shoe mount adapter with adjustable angle pole. If you buy this item, don’t be fooled by the faint white light emanating from the LED, because this is caused by fluorescence of some of the materials in the LED chips and plastic packaging. The actual UV output of 1.8 W at 365 nm is powerful!

Simple project to add CO2 laser cutting and marking to your CNC mill!

This is NOT one of those cheap DC-excited Chinese-made CO2 laser tubes. It does NOT need deionized water cooling and high-voltage wiring.

These tube that is part of this sale is very compact, only needs air cooling, and lases when fed 100 W of RF at 27 MHz through a single coax cable. The tube made by Synrad is similar to the one used in one of their series-48 air-cooled laser heads.

I started a project to develop a non-invasive peripheral laser nerve stimulator. This is a bench prototype of the laser system. Pulsing rate was meant to be high (from single pulses through thousands of pulses per second), so the high-voltage power supply consists of a 110V isolation transformer and a step-up

variac. The low-voltage part is supplied by a medical-grade Condor 15V power supply. Takes standard 110VAC power. Input is via a switched medical-grade power module. I did not build the internal triggering clock, so an external TTL trigger must be used.

The laser head consists of a Directed Energy Inc PCO-7110 Laser Driver Module which drives an Osram SPL_PL90_3 nanostack 75W 905nm pulsed laser diode.

I tested it and see that the power supply correctly puts out high voltage. I don't know why the display is not working. Using a TTL input from an external pulse generator, the laser produces pulses that I can see using an infrared viewer.

This item is being sold as a general-purpose laser prototype, and absolutely no health/medical claims are being made. The output from this device should never be directed at any human being.
