Embry-Riddle soarsButler takes command at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Dr. P. Barry Butler assumed his dutiesas president of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University after receivingthe unanimous vote of Embry-Riddle’sPresidential Search Committee. Hecomes to ERAU following a long career at the University of Iowa,where he served as provost. One ofhis first official duties at Embry-Riddlewas welcoming community, universityand industry leaders to a ribbon cutting marking the completion ofthe John Mica Engineering and Aerospace Innovation Complex.

“These are exciting times in aviationand aerospace, and Embry-Riddle willcontinue to play a pivotal role in theiradvancement,” said Dr. Butler. “I am honored to have joined such arenowned institution and look forwardto building upon its outstandingglobal reputation. Clearly, there issynergy between Embry-Riddle’s resources and the demand for technology and innovation in the aviation and aerospace industries,”he said.

The $21 million John Mica Engineeringand Aerospace Innovation Complexwas an extraordinary visual aid illustrating Dr. Butler’s comments.The first building in the complex,nicknamed MicaPlex, features 10,000square feet of flexible space for offices and tenants, mixed-use areas

and leading-edge laboratories. Thestunning architecture projects an airof innovation, and that aligns with themission of the complex. It will be occupied by individuals and organizations that play a key role inthe advancement of technology. MicaPlex will have 50,000 square feet at build-out.

“We dreamed about this many yearsago,” said Mori Hosseini, chairman ofERAU’s Board of Trustees. “Throughthe vision, hard work and dedicationof so many, it is now a reality, and tosay the sky is the limit of its potentialwould be an understatement.”

Dr. Butler added that the complexsupports the university’s quest to expand its research work and that itwill also enhance retention of its masters and Ph.D. graduates. Hecited the potential for the complex tobecome a global powerhouse and asignificant contributor to local and regional economic development.

The potential cited by Dr. Butler isgrounded in a career of experience insuch matters. During his 33-yeartenure at the University of Iowa, hewas deeply involved in various mechanical engineering programsand curricula. Under his leadership,the university experienced recordgrowth in its College of Engineering,

external research funding, privatesupport for faculty development, pro-gram initiatives, facility improvementsand student scholarships. He also es-tablished a center for technical com-munication, a critical element to theadvancement of technology. Asprovost, Dr. Butler presided over 100academic programs, the university’s11 colleges, continuing education, itslibrary and art museum, and a generaleducation budget exceeding $700million.

“We are fortunate to have Dr. Butlerleading ERAU and that he comes tothe presidency with the 100 percentendorsement of everyone involved onthe Presidential Search Committee,”said Hosseini, who chaired the committee. The committee includedtrustees, faculty, staff, student representatives, and delegates fromthe university’s Daytona Beach,Prescott and Worldwide campuses.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Universityserves more than 31,000 studentsacross two residential campuses, 125Worldwide locations and through online curricula. It is consistentlyranked highly by U.S. News & WorldReport, including having been rankedNo. 1 among non-doctoral schools,which it was until the introduction ofits doctoral programs.

The wild blue yonder over Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University got a little bluer in the first quarter as the university welcomed its sixth president on March 13, then cut the ribbon for a major addition to its Daytona Beach campus just 10 days later.

The flight crew reacted swiftly andset their instruments for an emergencylanding at the nearest airport thatcould handle the large internationalaircraft. That airport was DaytonaBeach International Airport (DAB).Anxious passengers became rivetedto what was happening as the crewset up the aircraft for an expediteddescent and unscheduled landing.Fortunately, the aircraft landed without incident, although the sightof fire trucks and other emergencyvehicles flanking the runway only underscored passenger anxiety.

The Air Berlin jet landed safely, thebest of all outcomes. But the chal-lenges for the 275- plus passengers,crew and staff of DAB were just beginning.

Ordinarily, international passengersremain onboard the aircraft until customs agents arrive to processthem. But because this had been anemergency landing, the passengersdeplaned immediately. This put themin the terminal building…and inlimbo.

Given the fact that this was the daybefore the Daytona 500, there wereno hotel rooms available, no roomsfor the weary passengers to relaxwhile waiting for another jet to getthem to their destination. It turnedout that the no-vacancy signs did notmatter. Even though customs agentswere summoned to DAB to “receive”the impromptu visitors, passengerswere compelled to remain at DAB.Since they were not bound for any

U.S. destination, they were not carrying the proper documentation to enter the United States. So, whilethey were able to step outside andwalk around, they had to remain atthe airport, while the DAB brass andstaff worked diligently to arrange forrescue flight.

“This was a sudden and dynamic situation that thrust the DAB teaminto emergency mode in the blink ofan eye,” said Rick Karl, DAB’s director.

DAB was operating that weekendwith a beefier staff than normal, dueto the Daytona 500. The staff is well-rehearsed in emergency operations,which prepared them well for the situation, although there were plentyof twists and turns along the way.

Volusia County’s Emergency Management Division connected theairport with the American Red Crossto help with resources to make thepassengers comfortable, includingseveral meals, blankets, and stuffedanimals for the children.

Finally, word came that an AmericanAirlines jet would depart Philadelphiafor DAB to provide the rescue flightto Mexico. But after repeated delays, that departure from Philly was canceled.

Adding to the challenges was the factthat DAB, which does not have equip-ment to handle large international air-craft like the Airbus 330-300, was notable to unload the passengers’ luggage from the Air Berlin jet.

Meanwhile, DAB staff rounded uppizza, sandwiches, coffee, water andsnacks from Publix and other local establishments to provide some comfort for the stranded international passengers. DAB’s director of airservice development, Jay Cassens,made a couple of trips to buy diapersand other baby supplies for infantpassengers and raided his SUV of his

own child’s toys to keep toddler passengers entertained. As the hoursclicked by, efforts to communicatewith Air Berlin and American Airlineswere ratcheted up in an effort to getsome news – any news – about a replacement flight.

At about 5 a.m. Sunday morning,DAB officials got word that an American Airlines rescue jet woulddepart Philadelphia at 7:30 a.m.,bound for DAB. Again, delays to thatschedule eroded passenger optimism.But as the sun came up, confirmationwas received that the replacement jetwas on its way and would land atDAB at 12:30 p.m. to provide a rescue flight to Cancun.

The American Airlines jet landed atDAB, and after being serviced forcontinuation of the flight to Cancun,the weary but relieved passengersboarded for the rescue flight to getthem to their destination. The onlyhitch was that their baggage was stillsealed on the Air Berlin jet. However,once the Air Berlin jet was cleared tofly, it took off for Cancun so the passengers’ baggage could catch up to them.

“I could not be more proud of howour folks responded and remained onduty to serve these passengers forwhat turned out to be an extendedperiod of time,” said Karl. “Theirtraining and preparation, backed bytheir professionalism not only represented DAB well, but also Volusia County Government and for that matter, the United States of America.”

“The staff on duty that weekendnever flinched and never waveredfrom doing anything and everythingto make these passengers comfort-able while they waited – and theywaited patiently – for the successfulend to their ordeal,” said Cassens.

“Not only did our staff-on-duty distinguish themselves, our teammembers who were not on duty werecalling in and standing by and eagerto help. It was a challenging weekend,to be sure, but gratifying in manyways, not the least of which was thegratitude shown by the passengersand crew for the efforts to accommo-date them throughout their ordeal.”

The company currently occupies137,000 square feet of space in afive-building complex in DeLand. Thenew medical lab, which will be about160,000 square feet, will be in theDeLand Municipal Airport’s NorthwestBusiness Park.

“DaVita Labs already has a workforceof about 350 including many engagedin leading-edge health care technology,”said Steve Burley, DeLand economicdevelopment manager. “This expansionand increasing demand for dialysisservices will lead to increased employment in coming years.”

DaVita Labs is a diagnostic laboratoryservicing dialysis organizations andphysician practices. It is a division ofDaVita Kidney Care, a leadingprovider of kidney care in the UnitedStates that delivers dialysis services

to patients with chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease.

The laboratories feature the latest inrenal-specific methodology and tech-nology for delivering quality test results. The DaVita Labs clinical laboratory team is led by experiencedscientists and pathologists and receives formal guidance from topnephrologists in the industry. DaVitaserves nearly 200,000 patients annu-ally at its DeLand complex.

“DaVita’s vision is to create the greatest health care community theworld has ever seen,” said JasonCline, vice president and generalmanager of DaVita Labs. “This expansion underscores our commit-ment to that vision, our patients, andthe DeLand community.”

Partnerships with Enterprise Florida,Volusia County Government, the Cityof DeLand, CareerSource Flagler/Volusia and the Florida Departmentof Economic Opportunity and DukeEnergy made the project possible.

“It’s gratifying to see a growing company like DaVita expand here inVolusia County,” said Rob Ehrhardt,director of Volusia County’s EconomicDevelopment Division. “This is a welcome investment by a nationallyrecognized brand, and one that provides not only job opportunitiesto our community, but underscoresthe fact that Volusia County is ‘openfor business.”

DaVita Labs’ expansion will accommodate continued growth of the company’s facilities in DeLand.The most recent expansion got underway in September with groundbreaking on a new $30 millionfacility.

TopBuild is the leading purchaser, installer and distributor of insulationproducts to the United States construction industry. The companyleverages a nationwide footprint togain economies of scale and servelocal markets with outstanding products, competitive pricing and relentless customer service.

The company reported $1.74 billionin sales last year. It employs 224 people locally and 8,000 nationally.The two primary corporate entitiesmaking up TopBuild are TruTeam,which is the leading installer of residential insulation; and ServicePartners, which distributes insulationand other building products.

TopBuild was spun off from MascoCorp. in 2015 and listed on the NewYork Stock Exchange on July 1, 2015(NYSE symbol: BLD). Significantgrowth caused the need for a new,larger headquarters building. But that kind of decision raises seriousdiscussions as to the best location inwhich to create the new HQ. Therewere plenty of cities that rolled out

the welcome mat and opened theircheckbooks to lure TopBuild.

After exhaustive analysis of locationoptions, company officials elected toremain in Volusia and build its national headquarters in DaytonaBeach.

“We are very pleased with theprogress the company has made andvery optimistic about the future asthe national economic recovery fuelsthe housing industry,” said JerryVolas, TopBuild’s chief executive officer. “We are fortunate to have anexceptional team of people, and weare thrilled to have created this beautiful new building to serve as ournational headquarters.”

The building, at 475 N. WilliamsonBlvd. in Daytona Beach, offers 67,000square feet. Many local resourceswere tapped to create the new building, including General Contractor TG Glass & Associates.

“In addition to a great design and allthe features of this new building are63 windows, which is 63 more than

we had at our prior location, so weare all grateful for that,” Volasquipped before inviting his team andhis guests inside for a slice cake that replicated the building design.

Several dignitaries offered comments.Among them were Daytona RegionalChamber President & CEO NancyKeefer, Volusia County Chair Ed Kelley, Daytona Beach City Commis-sioner Ruth Trager, CEO Business Alliance President Dr. Kent Sharples,Daytona Regional Chamber Chair EricPeburn, and Commercial Realtor DickMcNerney. All expressed gratitudefor TopBuild’s decision to remain inVolusia County. Comments also citedTopBuild’s 224-member workforce,the above-average payroll, and therole of the Fisher Family in the sale ofthe property to TopBuild. There alsowere several comments embracingthe relationships that helped makethe project a reality, including the Volusia County Economic DevelopmentDivision, CEO Business Alliance, theDaytona Regional Chamber, EnterpriseFlorida, and several key individualsand organizations.

It’s hard to beat a happy ending, followed by a bright future. But that was the prevailing mood lastmonth, as officials of TopBuild and area dignitaries gathered to celebrate the completion of thecompany’s new national headquarters in Daytona Beach.

That spirit of volunteerism is a pointof pride among SCORE mentors, justas it is among other volunteers whogive selflessly to thousands of organizations throughout the nationand around the world.

Understanding the impact of volun-teers’ contributions on our communitiesis to analyze statistics, includinghours served and the value of volunteer time. Volunteers are specialnot only because of the time theycontribute, but also the tremendousvalue of their innumerable talents. Estimates suggest 60 million individualsin the United States contribute morethan 8 billion hours of volunteer serviceplus economic values exceeding $160billion each year.

SCORE is a national organizationformed by the Small Business Administration in 1964. Its dedicatedvolunteers mentor business ownersand entrepreneurs. As the currentchair of SCORE Chapter 87, and acertified mentor, I work with a dedicated team of retired business

professionals who serve Volusia andFlagler counties. I have a deep appreciation and respect for the experience and talents of my fellowSCORE members and what their service means to local businesses. To better understand why SCOREvolunteers do what they do, I oftenrefer to the writings of Michael Lindenmayer of Forbes magazine. His“Seven Traits of Amazing Volunteers”defines the common denominators of dedicated volunteers.

RESULTS DRIVEN: Want their causesto generate major positive impact.

PASSIONATE PROFESSIONALISM:Mix that professionalism with passionand the result is impressive.

SENSE OF COMMUNITY: Understandthe benefit to their communities,work with leadership to pinpoint, cultivate and realize highly valueadded partnerships.

MAKE NO EXCUSES: Stick to theircommitments and have a zero-flakefactor. If they say they will contribute

something specific, they do their absolute best to make it happen.They are problem solvers and tinkerers, and they persist until theyfind a way forward.

CONSTANT CHAMPIONS: Amazingvolunteers have no off switch. Theyalways find a way to spread the word.

ENERGIZERS: They are the originalenergy drink. You feel amped whencollaborating with these folks.

IT’S A MATCH: Amazing volunteersthink less about what they can getfrom the experience of volunteeringand more about what they can contribute.

“This is great news for Deltona,” saidJerry Mayes, Deltona’s economic development manager. Mayes hasworked for years to bring health careproviders to the city, and the completion of the Halifax Health facility is a major step toward thatgoal.

Halifax Health broke ground on theproject nearly a year ago, announcingthat the project represents the firstphase of a complex that can handleincreased capacity. The first phasewill cover 15,000 square feet with 12 beds. 

“We anticipate demand will increaseso rapidly that there will be an earlyneed to expand, said Halifax HealthCEO Jeff Feasel at the groundbreak-ing event. Halifax Health subsidiaryHH Holdings LLC bought 31 acres anticipating the possibility of buildinga new hospital. The site is near the intersection of Interstate 4 and Howland Boulevard.

Halifax Health Emergency Departmentof Deltona provides the greater FourTownes area of west Volusia Countywith 24-hour expert emergencycare provided by board-certified

physicians, as well as care for a widerange of injuries and sicknesses including high fever, broken bones,heart attack and stroke. The facility’sexperienced doctors, nurses and staff are trained to deliver care inemergency situations.

The facility is open seven days a weekand offers a full-service imaging center, immediate care for specifiedillnesses and conditions, digital access to medical records for consistency and safety and follow-upcare resources.

Halifax Health offers emergency care in Deltona

Halifax Health is preparing to celebrate the completion of its freestanding emergency departmentin Deltona, a welcome addition to health care resources in Volusia County’s largest city, with approximately 90,000 residents.

In 1947, Bill France Sr. met withfriends, stock car racing drivers andracing enthusiasts at the StreamlineHotel on Route A1A. It was then andthere that they harnessed theirdreams and created the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing(NASCAR). The moment is preservedin the minds of millions of NASCARfans today. And the Streamline Hotelwill help perpetuate that memory forgenerations to come.

The Streamline Hotel is located nearthe original beach racing course andjust a short drive from famed DaytonaInternational Speedway, which replaced that course in 1959 – and recently completed a spectacular$400 million “reimagining” project tobecome the world’s first motorsportsstadium.

Local entrepreneur Eddie Hennessybought the aging property in 2014 atthe suggestion of his friend and areareal estate professional Dino Dodaniof Keller Williams Realty. The twotoured the aging structure in 2013,and Hennessy purchased the propertywith an eye on preserving its historyand restoring it to its former glory.

“The property will re-open this yearas a 44-room boutique hotel that celebrates the 1940s era and NASCARhistory,” said Hennessey. “DaytonaBeach is a special place, and we hopethat the return of the Streamline willhelp make it even more special.”

“The project included meticulous attention to detail in capturing andpreserving history,” said ShannonMay, general manager. “The guest -rooms will be well appointed withmany touches reminiscent of the1940s. At the same time, the newhotel is loaded with 21st centuryamenities and creature comforts,”she said.

The newly restored Streamline Hotelwill feature a unique rooftop bar, theSky Lounge, where Big Bill Franceand his colleagues met 70 years ago. The hotel restaurant, Olivier’sHideaway, is on the ground floor.

Streamline officials say they look forward to working with the DaytonaBeach Area Convention & Visitors Bureau on special promotions oncethe property is up and running.

Accordingly, CVB officials welcomethe addition of the historically signifi-cant property to the local lineup ofhotels and expect that the historicappeal will resonate with more thanjust motorsports fans.

In October 2014, the project was featured on Hotel Impossible, a popular Travel Channel television program that features unique andambitious hotel projects. Its host, Anthony Melchiorri, a race fan, history fan and hotel fan, experiencedan instant fascination for the project,

“This building is an icon. It’s a rockstar. If it were a person, it would be arock star.” Melchiorri said.

A grand opening date has not beenset, but officials anticipate a softopening this summer, to be followedby a grand opening shortly thereafter.

“We’re excited and cannot wait tocut the ribbon, but it is importantthat we not welcome our first guestuntil every detail is properly completedand our staff is properly trained,”said Hennessy.

“This will be a 21st century learningenvironment in every sense of theconcept,” said Saralee Morrissey, director of planning for Volusia CountySchools. “By that I mean the designwill be focused on personalized learn-ing, technology and digital instruction,with flexible learning spaces. The design also takes into account the increased needs for safety and securitywith controlled single points of access,a less open campus, card readers andcameras.”

Another safety feature is impact-resistant glass, and the buildings arerated for 155 mph winds.

Practically speaking, the design willinclude collaborative learning spacesin addition to traditional classrooms.Technology features and equipmentwill be designed on a 1:1 ratio in eachclassroom, meaning all students canparticipate in technology-based learning activities at the same time.

The 90,000-square-foot school willfeature 36 classrooms on two levels,art and music suites, a media center,

and a cafetorium in a separate building. The new Pierson ElementarySchool was designed by BRPH Architects & Engineers. Welbro Building Corp. is the contractor.

In addition to exciting design featuresand the prospect of having an all-newschool, the absence of somethingalso is eagerly anticipated – portableclassrooms.

Over the years the number ofportable classrooms on the PiersonElementary School campus has grownto 26. “Portable City” is where about200 of the school’s 580 preK thru 5thgrade students meet for instruction.Having all students in new, state-of-the-art classrooms and other learning environments is something students,teachers and parents look forward to.

A significant design element paystribute to the community’s fern industry, which defines the region,with artistic and geometric referencesto ferns gracing the front of the complex to greet students, teachers,parents and visitors.

“It is a fitting tribute to the Piersonarea fern industry and Volusia Countyagriculture in general,” said RobEhrhardt, director of the VolusiaCounty Economic Development Division. “Agriculture is a major economic driver with 229,000 acreson 1,114 farms in our communities,generating an impact of $781 million.”

The half-cent sales tax extension thatis funding the replacement school inPierson took effect in January and isexpected to raise $38 million in itsfirst year. The project list includesfive new or replacement schools, security enhancements in all schoolsand buses, enhancements to athleticfacilities at all high schools, and morerenovations to other schools.

A citizens’ project oversight commit-tee has been meeting monthly sinceMay 2016 and will provide its first annual report in September. Regularreports to the School Board and thecommunity will be offered throughoutthe program, which runs through2031.

What can you do with a half cent?New elementary school on tap for Pierson

In 2014, Volusia County voters approved a 15-year extension of the half-cent sales tax that originallyhad been voter-approved in 2001. The first school to be replaced with the new funding is PiersonElementary School. Excitement is building as the construction begins on the $18 million school due to open in August 2018.

This raises an interesting question:“What is a value proposition”?

Value proposition is solving a problemthat, is an unmet need of the customer.It is your unique strength, which isbetter and differentiated from otherbusinesses and your competitors. Itadds value to the customers.

A value proposition is a promise ofvalue to be delivered. It’s the primaryreason a prospect should buy fromyou. According to CXL Institute, avalue proposition outlines a state-ment that:

• explains how your product solvescustomers’ problems or improvestheir situation (relevancy);

• delivers specific benefits (quantified value); and

• tells the ideal customers why theyshould buy from you and not from the competition (unique differentiation).

A value proposition can be more effectively designed by utilizing avalue proposition canvas, which is essentially an equation of three keyingredients. First, the entrepreneurneeds to understand the customersby creating a customer profilethrough analyzing customer jobs,their pains and their gains. This is followed by a value map, which clarifies the products and services offered to the customer, their pain relievers and gain creators. Finally afit is made when a match is achievedbetween the customer profile and the value map.

These principles can apply to smallbusinesses in Volusia County. It hasbeen estimated that 90 percent oflocal establishments are categorizedas “small businesses” having fewerthan 20 employees. For these firms, itis especially important to identify theunmet needs of the customers andprovide products and services thosecustomers value.

If a business owner does not have avalue proposition, chances of achiev-ing goals for growth can be reducedsignificantly. The Small Business Development Center at DaytonaState College stands ready to assistlocal businesses in reviewing ordeveloping their value proposition.
