Dear Friends,
Recently, as I was driving on I-5, on my way to the
parish, I got a flat tire! My car is in good repair, and I was so
shocked by this sudden and inconvenient reality. A driver in
the HOV lane, seeing my situation slowed down and let me
over, where my car could be safely parked on the shoulder of
the road. I turned on my emergency flashers and grabbed
my cell phone as I quickly began to access the situation.
First, I called my husband for moral support while
looking for the number for the auto club. I knew they would
come and fix my tire, but I was on a schedule with people
waiting for me! I admit, I felt a little overwhelmed by my
predicament. As I looked up from my phone, I saw a young
man had pulled over a short distance from me and he was
jogging to my car. I stated the obvious, “I have a flat tire.”
He kindly responded with a chuckle, “I see that.” I explained
that I was calling someone to help, and he smiled as he told
me he could have the tire changed before they could get
there.
He was proficient, getting right to work. He found
the spare and the jack, and calmly set about his task. As he
worked, my bleak situation seemed brighter and I found
myself counting the blessings of this experience. First, the
sun was out which was much better than rain in this instance.
Second, the flat was on the side of the car away from traffic
and there was a barrier that made it feel rather safe given the
circumstances. And finally, the kind young man who stopped
to calmly and efficiently offer his assistance to a stranger
stopped on the side of the road..
I can’t tell you how many people just rushed by
while I was stopped on the road, or how long it would have
taken the auto club to arrive. I do know how to fix a flat,
though I wasn’t wanting to attempt it on the side of the
freeway. The young man who changed the tire dismissed my
offer of money for his service, and jogged back to his car as
calmly as he came. Since then, I have thought about him and
prayed for him often.
This is intended as more than just an interesting
anecdote. This is a reminder that our actions matter. We
come to Mass and are nourished by the Word and the
Eucharist and are then sent out to share God’s love with
others. This can take many forms—praying with or for
someone, being patient with others, (especially our family),
listening to someone who needs to talk, offering food to
someone who is hungry, helping someone who is stranded or
simply offering a smile to a passerby. What we do matters.
This week, let’s pay attention to the people around us,
watching for opportunities to serve God, by serving them.
Let’s continue to pray for one another,
Marti Lundberg
