ATLANTA – U.S. Senator and Senate candidate Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., today released the following statement announcing his participation in the Atlanta Press Club debate with his two opponents. “I’m pleased to announce that I will be participating in the Atlanta Press Club debate to ensure that Georgia voters have the opportunity to hear from myself and the other two candidates in this race on critical issues affecting families and businesses in our state. I feel confident that, in addition to my longstanding record of public service and the 214 times I’ve answered questions from reporters in this year alone, this debate will demonstrate to Georgians my commitment to upholding a commonsense, pro-growth conservative agenda. If my Democrat opponent would like to offer any substantive policy positions that he stands for, I encourage him to follow suit and openly and transparently answer questions from Georgia media as I have always done and will continue to do.”

ABOUT EARLY VOTING IN GEORGIA

With the November 8, 2016 General Election fast approaching, I am compelled to address an issue here in Brooks County that appears to be as clear as mud. Early Voting, more commonly referred to by the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office as Absentee Voting in Person, is open to any registered voter here in Brooks County and is provided simply as a convenience to allow voters to cast their ballots early in order to avoid lines on Election Day. The concept here has been met with considerable confusion. Some voters have the idea that they can only cast their ballot on Election Day because it might not count if cast otherwise. Not true. To put it simply, if you would like to cast you ballot early, for whatever reason, you may do so at the Brooks County Elections Offices on S. Highland Rd. any day between October 17th and November 4th 8 to 5 daily. Early Voting will also be available this election on Saturday October 29th due to the Presidential race, among other federal races, on the ballot. Saturday voting will be available 9 to 4. Early Voting isn’t for a special selected few; it is for every registered voter in the county. Please take advantage of this convenience. Should there be any questions concerning Early Voting, please contact the Elections Office at 229-263-9939. We will be more than happy to assist any way we can. If you have never registered to vote, the deadline is October 11th. You can register to vote on the Secretary of State website www.sos.ga.gov or come by the office during regular business hours. Ken Collins – Elections Supervisor, Brooks County Board of Elections and Registration

In Pursuit of Cheap The race to the bottom is unforgiving and relentless. I ordered some straw hats for a small party. The shipper sent them in a plastic bag, with no box, because it was cheaper. Of course, they were crushed and worthless. I wrote a note to the company’s customer service address, but they merely sent an autoreply, because it was cheaper. And they don’t answer the phone... you guessed it, be-cause it’s cheaper. Of course, you have competition. But the big companies that are winning the price war aren’t winning because they’ve eliminated customer service and common sense. They’re winning because of significant advances in scale and process, advances that aren’t available to you. Organizations panic in the face of the floor falling out from under their price foundation, and they often respond by becoming a shell of their former selves. Once you decide to become a cheap commodity, all of the choices you made to be a non-commodity fall victim to your pursuit of cheap. Cheap is the last refuge for the marketer who can’t figure out how to be better. The al-ternative is to choose to be worth it, remarkable, reliable, a good neighbor, a worthy citizen, lead-ing edge, comfortable, trusted, funny, easy, cutting edge or just about anything except, “the cheapest at any cost.” -Seth Godin

HonestyYup, some people can’t handle the truth!

My Favorite AnimalOur teacher asked what my favorite animal was, and I said, “Fried chicken.”She said I wasn’t funny; but she couldn’t have been right, because everyone else laughed. My parents told me to always tell the truth. I did. Fried chicken is my favorite animal. I told my dad what happened, and he said my teacher was probably a member of PETA.He said they love animals very much.I do, too. Especially chicken, pork and beef. Anyway, my teacher sent me to the principal’s office. I told him what happened, and he laughed, too.. Then he told me not to do it again. The next day in class my teacher asked me what live animal was my favorite. I told her it was chicken. She asked me why; so I told her it was because you could make them into fried chicken. She sent me back to the principal’s office. He laughed and told me not to do it again.I don’t understand. My parents taught me to be honest, but my teacher doesn’t like it when I am. Today, my teacher asked me to tell her what famous military person I admired most. I told her, “Colonel Sanders.” Guess where I am now...

A biographer once wrote of Christopher Columbus that “He discovered no island or sea as lonely as himself.” How different for those

who trust God! David wrote, “When You, God, went out before Your people, when You marched through the wilderness...You provided for the poor!” The writer of Hebrews echoed those words when he wrote, “I will never leave you nor ever forsake you.” King Nebuchadnezzar refused to hear the testimony of three young men. He bound them and threw them into a fiery furnace. In amazement, when he looked into the furnace he did not see three men, but four: unharmed and unbound. He shouted, “Servants of the Most High God, come out! Come here!” God went before them, protected them and rescued them. On one occasion the disciples of Jesus were frightened by the winds and the waves that were threatening them. They were in a little boat with little hope. Then Jesus appeared and said, “Take courage. Don’t be afraid. It is I!” He went to them, calmed their fears and then said, “You of little faith. Why did you doubt?” A Psalmist was traveling through a deep valley with dark shadows. He was filled with great fear as he faced the “unknown.” Yet, he was able to say, “I will fear no evil, for You are with me. Your rod and Your staff will comfort me!” He trusted God because He never abandoned Him. The Lord always goes before us to protect us. He will provide for everything we need now and through eternity.

Mead or honey wine is the oldest alcoholic drinks known to man. It is made from honey and water via fermentation with yeast. It may be still, carbonated, or sparkling; it may be dry, semi-sweet, or sweet. Unlike beers and cider, meads (being wines) are drunk in small quantities.#3201

2 nuns found slain in Mississippi home, their vehicle gone

DURANT, Miss. (AP) — Two nuns who worked as nurses and helped the poor in rural Mississippi were found slain in their home, and there were signs of a break-in and their vehicle was missing, officials said Thursday.

It was too early to say how the nuns died, but it doesn’t appear that they were shot, Durant Assistant Police Chief James Lee said.

The nuns were identified as Sister Margaret Held and Sister Paula Merrill, Holmes County Coroner Dexter Howard said. Their bodies were taken to a state crime lab for autopsies.

The women, both nurse practitioners, were found Thursday morning when they didn’t report to work at a nearby hospital.

“They were two of the sweetest, most gentle women you can imagine. Their vocation was helping the poor,” said the Rev. Greg Plata, who oversees a small Catholic church the sisters attended in the Mississippi Delta.

Maureen Smith, a spokeswoman for the Catholic Diocese of Jackson, said there were signs of a break-in at the home and the nuns’ vehicle is missing. She said the sisters worked at the Lexington Medical Clinic, about 10 miles away from their home in Durant, one of the poorest areas in the state.

Authorities didn’t release a motive and it wasn’t clear if the nuns’ religious work had anything to do with the slayings.

“I have an awful feeling in the pit of my stomach,” said Lee, the assistant police chief, who is Catholic.

Merrill moved to Mississippi from Massachusetts in 1981 and believed her calling was to stay in the Deep South, according to a 2010 article in The Journey, a publication of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.

When asked about her ministry, Merrill was humble.

“We simply do what we can wherever God places us,” she said.

According to the article, Merrill and Held rotated one week at a time at the Lexington Medical Clinic and the Durant Primary Care Clinic.

At the clinic, Merrill saw children and adults, and helped in other ways.

“We do more social work than medicine sometimes,” she said. “Sometimes patients are looking for a counselor.”

The sisters were among 35 members of St. Thomas Catholic Church, and they typically gathered on Thursday nights for Bible study and a meal, Plata said. Held was a great baker, and both women would usually bring something to eat.

Merrill usually gave the pastor his annual flu shot.

“Margaret was a bit older. She was more outgoing, more gregarious. Paula was a bit more shy, yet in the clinic I was always impressed by her professional demeanor,” Plata said.

He said they were part of a small Catholic community in the state that helps the poor. The diocese said there are about 108,000 Catholics in Mississippi.

Held was a member of the School Sisters of St. Francis in Milwaukee. Merrill was affiliated with the Sisters of Charity in Nazareth, Kentucky.

“Both were really down to earth. There was no phony spirituality. They were the real McCoy. They had a deep love of scripture,” he said.

Bishop Joseph Kopacz said in a statement that the sisters “absolutely loved the people in their community.”
