The ancient sites ofPompeii and Herculaneum,shadowed by Mount Vesuvius and only half an hourfrom Naples, are probably the best preserved of all

of Italys Roman sites.

Sorrento, 53km south of Naples, is a small, mature,holiday resort with a spectacular coastline and a mazeof narrow streets with many restaurants, cafes, designershops and boutiques. It is an ideal base from which toreach many of the regions greatest treasures including

Naples, Herculaneum, Mount Vesuvius, Positano, Amal,Ravello and the islands of Capri and Ischia.

Positano, dramatically perched on a precipitous slopeleading down to a small, sandy cove, is a delightfulvillage. Originally a small shing village, Positano hasalways been a popular holiday destination for theNeapolitan nobility, attracted by this simple yet colourfulvillage and spectacular scenery.

The most dramatic view of the Amal coast is from theenchanting town ofRavello, 400m above sea level. Oneof the best vantage points is from the Villa Rufolo andits tropical gardens, famed for being the inspiration forParsifal, Richard Wagners last and possibly greatestopera. The annual Wagner opera festival takes place herebetween June and July.

Moving further south, beyond the awe-inspiring templesat Paestum, unfolds the Cilento National Park with itsrugged coastline, sandy beaches and UNESCO WorldHeritage status. Tourism here is in its infancy and hasremained a closely guarded secret by the Italians formany years. A land of mythology, visitors will marvel atthe archaeological ruins from Paestum to Velia and ata coastline scattered with Saracen watch-towers. Thisarea is also where slow food is the order of the day withnumerous agriturismo offering local delicacies try the

excellent buffalo mozzarella.

The neighbouring mountainous region of Basilicata,known as the instep of Italys boot, briey touches theTyrrhenian Sea. This dramatic coastline is home to thehistoric town ofMaratea which encompasses a prettyharbour; twenty beaches (sand and pebble) and a historiccity centre with many churches and a towering 70m highStatua del Redentore. The region is also home to theancient city ofMatera, known for its surreal Sassi diMatera prehistoric houses dug into the local tufa rock.These natural caves were the rst houses of the Neolithicinhabitants of the region, who transformed the naturallandscape into new forms of architecture. Often chosenfor authenticity as the backdrop to many biblical lms,Matera remains one of the most admired cities in Italy not to be missed.

Entering southern Italy (Il Mezzogiorno) are the regions of

Campania and Basilicata, steeped in Etruscan and Greekremains, the most important of which are found at Paestum.
