TGS Sixth Form Be inspired

Welcome to issue three... We have recently hosted our very

successful KS5 Awards evening, with over thirty-five individual awards being presented by Richard Lister OBE. Richard also gave a great speech and encouraged our students to be bold, brave and challenge! Our students are very aware how competitive their 'Next Steps' will be and will certainly take on board Richard's advice to ensure they can be as successful as him and many of our Alumni.

Other recent guest speakers have included Matthew Chambers (Alumni) presenting to our Sixth Form body on his journey with Transport for London(TFL) and how he is currently working and advising on a project worth £2 billion pounds!

We are also very privileged to have David Kogan OBE returning this month to lead a lecture on the history of the Labour Party, as well as discussing the forthcoming General Election. In November we welcome back Shaun Coles (Alumni) to deliver an exciting insight into his rise to Global Director of Governance for Santander Bank. Our annual Sixth Form Open Evening takes place on Wednesday 6th November, and it is always impressive meeting and talking with all the potential students and their families who will be bold, brave and take on the exciting challenge of joining our successful Thomas Gainsborough Sixth Form. I hope you enjoy perusing our Portrait and if you would like to inspire and enthuse our readers, please get in touch.

I saw that TGS posted on Facebook looking for ex Head Boys and Girls. I was Head Girl in 2008 (according to the board, I wouldn't have remembered the year!) back

when TGS was Great Cornard Upper School. We had a really good year that year and made so much money from 6th form socials that our end of year prom was completely free.

I went to Leeds to study an undergraduate BA in Arabic & Spanish, and I lived in Fes, Morocco, and Granada, Spain. I did my MA at Leeds as well, a research project on medieval Arabic & Spanish poetry, and then have stayed at the University working at the Students' Union where I'm now the head of governance. I sometimes come back to the area as my parents still live in Suffolk, but I haven't been back to TGS since I left I don't think.

After Sixth Form at GCUS I went on to study Natural Sciences at the University of Birmingham and spent my third year studying in Madrid. During University

summers I worked as a Campsite Courier in France, Spain and Italy. I graduated in 2012 and took a summer job in North Carolina before travelling East to West coast across the states.

On returning from my travels, I moved to London and was offered a job in Hammersmith working in the Overseas Property and Currency Exchange industry. I started off as a Customer Service Executive and was gradually promoted to a Consultant before being offered a four month sabbatical. I spent this solo travelling through South and Central America. When I came back I was put forward for a new position as an Events Manager within the same company. This role involved managing exhibitions and seminars for clients buying properties overseas.

After five years with the same company I decided to try something new and changed careers. My next role was as a Project and Office Manager for a company based in Covent Garden, helping brands to grow using behavioural science techniques to improve their marketing.

Nowadays I am still based in West London and enjoy spending my free time travelling and exploring London.

After finishing Sixth Form at GCUS I headed to the University of Lincoln where I gained a first class degree in Psychology (BSc). Upon

graduation, I worked in the NHS as an Assistant Psychologist before moving to the bright lights of London to join a graduate scheme in Consumer Research - and conquer the commuter tubes! Working with data was never what I had planned after hating Maths at school, but I love managing client accounts and working with brands. My favourite client to work with was a cheese brand who gave me free cheese at every meeting!

For the last two years, I’ve been living in the suburbs of South East London with my boyfriend, Andrew, and working as a Strategy Director at a brand consultancy next to the Thames. My role is to advise brands on how to better understand and connect with people.

Working in a consultancy is really fast-paced, but it’s engaging, challenging and I get to work with some really amazing people. I do miss having a six-week Summer holiday, but I’m still in close contact with the friends I made at school - and will even be maid of honour for one of those friends next year!

Whilst at TGS Sixth Form I studied Law, Psycholo-gy and Sociology. From day one, my Tutors took a real interest in

helping me achieve my qualifications. I became Head Girl in Year 13 which was really rewarding and something I learnt a lot from. After 2 years of continual support and encour-agement, I had the confidence to leave Sixth Form and to go onto University. I studied a BA in Primary Education for 3 years and I now work locally as a primary school teacher, which is a job I thoroughly enjoy!

My advice would be to make the most of the time you have at Sixth Form, listen to the advice given to you by your teachers and put yourself in a position to go on and do what you want to do.

I did Biology, Chemistry and Maths A-Levels at TGS Sixth Form and achieved Bs in all of them. It was actually Mrs Wilson-Downes who got me

interested in Biology in the first place – if it wasn’t for her, I definitely wouldn’t have taken A-Level Biology let alone go on to do a degree in it. I was also Head Girl in Year 13, which really helped me gain some confidence and allowed me to develop some keys skills which still help me now. It also looked really good on my CV when applying for universities and jobs.

After Sixth Form, I went straight off to the University of Kent in Canterbury and studied for 3 years. I graduated with a First Class (Hons) degree in July 2016 and then started my job search, which is when I found Source BioScience.

I currently work as a DNA Sequencing Team Leader for a company called Source BioScience. My roles include managing the Oxford laboratory and a team of DNA sequencing scientists, handling and processing samples in the lab, equipment maintenance and dealing with customers. I started with Source BioScience as a DNA Sequencing Scientist in December 2016 after completing my BSc degree in Biomedical Science.

I studied Medieval History at University of Winchester and achieved a higher education diploma at it. I now work as a Sales Administrator for Global Stone & Paving ltd in Marks Tey, and live in Copford.

I decided to stay on at TGS Sixth Form after my GCSEs as I had always got on well with

my teachers and felt that I didn’t need to go anywhere else. I did A Levels in Geography, Maths and Physics. All of these subjects have put me in good stead for the career I have now.

After working in a management training programme for Marks & Spencer for a year I decided to pursue my dream of becoming an Airline Pilot.

Securing a place at CTC Aviation I went on to train for 2 years, including 8 months in New Zealand. The training was extrememly intensive but I graduated with an average of 93%.

I’m now a First Officer with British Airways and proof that you can achieve your dreams with hard work and determination!

Since leaving Thomas Gainsborough School in 2015, I've gone on to achieve so much in a short space of time. At the age of 18 I left home to go to college to work towards

being a beauty therapist. I worked 5 days a week to support myself and committed my 2 days off to go to college. After a long year, I finally achieved my NVQ Level 2 in Beauty Therapy. A year later I decided to complete my Level 3 at home, enabling me to work around my home life and family. I am now a level 3 qualified beauty therapist and nail technician. I currently work in Bannatyne's premium spa in Bury St Edmunds but I will soon be starting my own beauty business, converting one of the spare bedrooms in my house into a small salon.Aside from my exciting future, my boyfriend and I live in Bury St Edmunds with our very comical cat Ruby.

I will always be grateful to Thomas Gainsborough School for encouraging me to reach high and the amazing support I received from my teachers and learning mentors.

I left Sixth Form and decided not to go to university even though I had an unconditional offer and went to work in the super yacht industry. I

worked on a 55 metre private super yacht as a deckhand water sports instructor.I then came home after 16 months to manage and direct several executive apartments in Chelmsford.I am now almost a year into being a co founder of a financial investing and anaylisis company alongside the property management.

I will always have fond memories of TGS.

Since leaving Thomas Gainsborough School, I have started my venture as a specialist Equine Portrait Photographer. The staff at Thomas Gainsborough

Sixth Form enabled me to start the perfect degree for me; Marine and Natural History Photography at The University of Falmouth. This degree has taught me all the skills for perfecting my Equine Photography, as well as gaining a keen interest in conservation.

Before starting Thomas Gainsborough Sixth Form, I was actively discouraged from working with horses due to their unpredictable nature. However, the incredible Sixth Form team encouraged me to follow my instincts and create my own niche to work in. Due to this encouragement, I am now an active member of the Equine Photography industry. I have embraced technology and now run a successful blog and Youtube channel that features Equine Photography, Travel and Nature.

Throughout the last few years, I have been implementing skills that Thomas Gainsborough Sixth Form taught me. The most important is networking, which has taught me to not only take every opportunity that I am given but to also go out and find my own opportunities. This has led to me being a press photographer at Badminton Horse Trials for two years.

In the coming months, I aspire to continue photographing horses with the same passion that I have always had for them. As well as growing my social media presence, I have plans to create bespoke Equine Photography workshops. None of this would have been possible if I didn’t have the continued support of the Thomas Gainsborough Sixth Form team.

My time at Thomas Gainsborough School and Sixth Form very much helped to shape the individual I am today. The drive for

excellence, and the rigorous hard-work of the art department continuously encouraged me to endeavour to be the best I could possibly can be. This is reflected in being awarded whilst studying at Thomas Gainsborough School with the chance to exhibit my own landscape alongside those of Thomas Gainsborough at Gainsborough House in Sudbury.

I have just completed reading my second year of Fine Art at the University of Suffolk and, most recently, have been awarded the title of Fine Art Student of The Year, 2019 by the Arts and Humanities faculty.

At Thomas Gainsborough Sixth Form, I studied A-Level Art and Design, English Language, English Literature, Textiles, and an EPQ; where I attained A*A*A*AB.

In the same year of starting my studies at the University of Suffolk I was asked by my institution to represent at the Art History and Creative Arts Higher Education Conference, 2018, at the prestigious venue of the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, an event which advocated the importance of creative based learning in higher education. My representation at this event was strongly shaped by the values and attitudes instilled by the art department at Thomas Gainsborough School who always recognised the importance of creative and cultural learning in and outside educational curriculums.

In addition to this, I have also worked alongside The Network for East Anglian Collaborative Outreach (NEACO) and the University of Suffolk’s Student Ambassador Scheme to deliver drawing workshops at a range of local Ipswich high schools. Having the confidence to do this stems from my role as Head Girl and the mentoring schemes I participated in at Thomas Gainsborough School as well as numerous professional opportunities I have undertaken throughout my time at university, so far.

Subsequently, since being at the University of Suffolk,

I have also had the opportunity of exhibiting my work in the Waterfront Gallery, as part of a group show titled: Simultaneous Mapping, which was internationally transferred to Otis College in Los Angeles. As well as currently having my most recent self-portrait titled: Inhibition, 2019, exhibited in our year’s end of year show at Arlingtons, Ipswich.

Post-sixteen education is an exciting time, characterised by a wealth of opportunities. At Thomas Gainsborough Sixth Form, we have a

very committed teaching staff who will provide you with the independence that comes with this level of study, but also ensure that they create active, dynamic and varied learning experiences. The chance totake an Extended Project Qualification was really beneficial to me as somebody who was looking to go to university but, in general, this epitomises the idea that Sixth Form is all about doing the things you enjoy and having the freedom to engage with them on a higher level.

Outside of the classroom, one finds yet more opportunity in the enormous number of enrichment activities on offer: from sport to the arts, to attending conferences and going on trips. I was even able to organise my own enrichment activities.

My own time at Thomas Gainsborough Sixth Form was incredibly well rounded and rewarding. Teaching has always been my dream job and so I was very pleased to be able to take advantage ofthe lower school mentoring scheme whilst I was

still a student. Indeed, the school have continued to support me in my goals and provide me with further insight and experience. The Careers and UCAS teams are both excellent and their input is another fundamental way in which these next two years can be specifically tailored to you.

In terms of what I am doing now, I continue to pursue my teaching career, gaining experience in lots of ways and to add to my portfolio of extracurricular activities within and around my studies. I am very much enjoying my current degree- in History at the University of Suffolk, still using the skills I learnt whilst at TGS. My time as Head Boy allowed me to contribute really positively to many aspects of school life and I act in a similar capacity at university. I have plans to progress to further study and add to my knowledge and understanding in all of the subjects about which I am passionate, from theatre to theology.

The ideas I have for a PhD follow explicitly on from my EPQ...just one example of where a TGS education can take you.

After leaving Thomas Gainsborough Sixth Form and completing my A levels, I moved up north to study business management with a placement

year at the University of Hull. I am thoroughly enjoying my chosen degree, and have received a first class honours in my first year of studying.

Throughout my two years at Sixth Form, Mr Alexander supported and encouraged me to pursue a career in business management as he recognised my strengths and potential. He did this by providing me with networking opportunities and competitions to further my passion.

Moving away from Sudbury really helped my confidence. My A levels may not have gone to plan, but I am moving forwards and making progress with a subject I love. I am looking forward to starting my second year at the University of Hull.

I held the position of Head Girl from 2018-19 during my time at Thomas Gainsborough School alongside studying Maths, History and Religious Studies A-levels, as well as an EPQ. Being Head Girl and

interacting with Student Parliament gave me some fantastic experiences and opportunities both within the Sixth Form and the wider community through volunteering, as well as allowing me to develop life skills such as public speaking and team building within the debating society that I hope to continue utilising.

Currently, I’m in my first year at the University of St Andrews studying philosophy and theology and hope to graduate in 2023.

Whilst I’m not entirely sure of where I want to head in terms of my career, I do know that I want to continue my studies and further fulfil my passion for philosophy and debating that was ignited during my time at TGS!

I chose to come to TGS, which was not my local Sixth Form, due to the warmth of the welcome I received from the staff and the students. The staff made it very apparent that I was important to them and my future was what motivated them

to push me to achieve the best that I could. I got involved and enjoyed making new friends at the school and taking on new challenges including that of being Head Boy. This exposed me to an inside view to some of the workings of the school and to members of the senior leadership team. As a member of the school parliament we tried to change anything that may improve the students’ experience of attending TGS.

I enjoyed the personal touch that I felt I received from the Sixth Form staff and the wider school.

My achievements mean that I am reading an Ocean Sciences Degree at Plymouth University.

One of the things that this role has allowed me to do is improve on my confidence. To be able to speak in front of an audience is an invaluable skill that will come useful in all aspects of

life. Working and planning ideas with a team is something I have also enjoyed because not only does it give me a sense of responsibility, but it requires me to be someone who is open minded and can work well with different people.

My goal is to study medicine at university and I believe that the skills I learnt and will learn from this role are stepping stones towards this ambition. To be able to lead a team, to be an effective communicator, and to be confident and take responsibility are characteristics of a good doctor which I aspire to be one day.

I am looking forward to the plans AJ and I have for the future and I hope I can continue making the school proud.

I’m AJ, the Head Girl here at Thomas Gainsborough. I’m currently in my final year at Sixth Form studying History, English Literature and Philosophy, and I aim to go on to study History at the University

of St Andrews. One of the reasons I love TGS is our encouragement of student initiative when it comes to new ways of enriching the student experience. With new initiatives such as a Sixth Form Student Parliament and the committee system, student voice has really improved, endeavouring to make every voice feel heard. The teaching is also phenomenal and I have had so much support in my academic life.

I have loved my time at TGS, the sense of community, the support network and the focus on each student striving to be the very best that we can be always makes me proud to be a student here.

TGS Sixth Form has lots to offer outside of studies...

On-Site Free Young Driver Courseat TGS for Yrs 12 & 13

EZE School of Motoring offers Years 12 and 13 extra curricular enrichment in the form of the free Young Driver Course, held on-site at TGS.

The course offers students an insight to the DVSA driving curriculum in which they have an opportunity to take part in theory and practical sessions. Fun discussions are had in the classroom covering topics such as theory test questions, Highway Code, hazard perception clips, what can influence driving capability and possible outcomes for example the effects of recreational and medicinal drugs, alcohol, peer pressure, lack of concentration, phones and much more. Time is also spent in the car learning the basics of cockpit drills, clutch control, gear changes and steering around a small course.

This type of pre-17 course is similar to those offered by national driving schools at various locations around the county and equivalent to about the first 3 hours spent with a qualified driving instructor (ADI). However the difference is that unlike the other courses, the TGS Young Driver Course is held on site and is free of charge!

Al and Chris (both qualified ADI’s with extensive driving experience)from EZE school of Motoring have been running the course at TGS for 5 years now. They are also sponsors of the TGS Football team. Courses run for 3 weeks, on a Monday from 3.15-5.15pm (G Block) and all you need to do is sign up with Mr Alexander or Ms King. No provisional licence is required and there is no expectation for students to sign up with EZE. However if students enjoy their experience and like the teaching styles of Al and Chris and wish to continue their driving tuition with EZE, they will benefit from a special TGS discount.

The course is designed to be fun, informative, interactive and what’s more it’s free and delivered on-site at your school. So why not get off the starting grid, and sign up for the course today - it’s your first step towards independence.

22 Sixth Form Sixth Form Sixth Form Sixth Form Sixth Form

I am currently studying Music, Biology and Geography A level in Year 12. Having spent 5 years studying GSCEs at TGS, I have a great understanding of how the school operates, its

values, aspirations and the importance it places on each students well being. The school’s main aim remains the same in the Sixth Form as it was for me the past 5 years. This aim to maximise all students’ learning opportunities and the journey they take to their achievements is what made it easy for me to decide to continue my education at TGS.

Because of my previous experience of the school, it meant I understood how the school “operated” and luckily for me, this system suits me as a student. Not only does our school offer great and engaging lessons but there is an extremely well-organised support system that goes on behind the scenes. This support system is the main reason why I chose TGS over the other Sixth Forms and Colleges in the area. So far this first half term, I have found that the step up from GCSE to A-level isn’t easy and requires a lot of work; however, it is manageable with the correct attitude and knowing where to look for support when and if it is necessary. At the moment, the subject which I am enjoying and interests me the most is Biology. This is not just because of my passion and interest in the subject or the course work, but because of the staff and classroom atmosphere. Being part of a small class allows our lesson to be more personal. My other two classes are equally small and like Biology, they both have a personal feel to them.

I am currently in my first year at Sixth Form studying English Literature, History and Psychology. TGS was always the choice for me. The team are so supportive of both your interests and academics

and were really accommodating when it came to choosing my subjects. Due to the smaller size of the Sixth Form, TGS is much more personal and you really feel treated as an individual within the community, which is why I feel like I have settled in so easily. I’m really enjoying all of my subjects and my teachers have been so brilliant and helpful in helping me to achieve my goals.
