‘It's About Making Ideas Happen An idea not coupled with action will never get any bigger than the brain cell it occupied.’-Arnold H. Glasgow Perhaps few have noticed it, but commerce has always been a creative endeavour at its core. Innovation, and a fair amount of gusto - and these two go hand-in-hand - are irrefutably paramount to fashioning new products and dis-covering original methods of marketing them for the public to see their allure and nothing else. From Harry Selfridge to Steve Jobs, entrepreneurs have strived to achieve the unachievable and materialize what is deemed impossible. Essentially, that is what we learned during the Market Basket Week, whether we were visualizing our own products to display during the exhibition, or crafting the most eye-catching advertisements, Diyafites flaunted the heights of their resourcefulness and ingenuity, which is the reason we have adopted the theme of the Eye Online this month to be ‘Making Ideas Happen’, with the focal point being Commerce Week. Anyone can have an idea. It is giving in to the thoughts plaguing your head rather than ignoring them, the courage to trust impulses, taking calculated risks and investing wholeheartedly in a concept seemingly absurd that, set apart the ordinary from the successful. It goes without saying that the execution of a plan is vital, even more so than the plan itself and though this may be true, there is still no idyllic formula for success in this intricate industry. Nevertheless there is this: no amount of success grants anyone the right to shed the morals they have been taught their entire lives and no vast sum of money justifies the despicable things you do with the power that comes as a result. Confucius once stated, “The superior man understands what is right; the inferior man understands what will sell.” We believe one topic that must be deliberated during any discussion of commerce is Business Ethics. To put it simply, ethics is distinguishing between what is right and wrong, then doing the unquestionably right thing .However, when it comes to the world of trade and profit, it has never been quite so simple. Entrepreneurs and business owners confront moral dilemmas every day; and frequently, the lines between right and wrong can become blurred. Many opt, unfortunately, to forge the route that promises the largest profit. We have all heard, “With great power comes great responsibility” but perhaps this takes new meaning in the world of large businesses as they play an integral role in the lives of their employees at every stage of production, notably those in developing countries. A large company has the power to exploit these individuals- outright denying them wages, adequate working conditions, and rights - as many do, which is why making the right choices as an entre-preneur is ineffably essential: they can profoundly affect the lives of countless people. What makes an exceptionally noble business is a grasp of the fact that it has the power to exploit, and that the most unethical means may be the easiest one, but regardless chooses to act on principle. We need more of this in our world as it would make it significantly less appalling than it already is. That is all we can hope for. Anne Sumudu J. and Saina Davodi, Year10G1

Valedico……….Goodbye As years go by and time seems to fly, it’s time to wave goodbye to another year of memories and greet the coming one with an amiable sense of endearment. If anything, the experience gained by being able to be a part of this prestigious club has instilled all with the ardency to look upon every little thing with a different front. A state of the art perspective, perhaps. The essential purpose of Eye Online was to inform, engage, inspire and entertain a di-verse readership — including alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff and other friends of Diyafah family— by tell-ing powerful stories that present a compelling, timely and honest portrait of the School and its extended family. In the originality of its conception, in the excellence of its writing and visual presentation and in its commitment to accuracy, healthy discourse and editorial balance, the magazine endeavoured to reflect the values and the quality of the institution itself. With all that being said, the outgoing editorial team would like to take this opportunity to welcome the incoming alliance to take this stepping stone to reach new heights and take the legacy forward.

On that note, we, the Editorial Committee for the academic year 2013-2014, would like to sign off, handing over

our duties to the Editorial Committee of the academic year 2015-2016. Congratulations and good luck!

Hello Tomorrow

Exit yesterday as we enter tomorrow. Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire, you will what you imagine and at last you create what you will. An extremely exciting year went by, and an extremely exciting year is coming forth. Every little bits and pieces were highlighted by our remarkable editorial team and we pledge to keep up with the pace as the newly elected and gratified editorial team of Eye Online flashes the signal to go. We plan on moving forward, as usual finding our ca-pabilities and striving beyond them. We are going to turn around new corners, embrace fresh ideas and apply them to the fullest. The former editorial team has set high stakes for us, and we will pull ahead. The insights; the out-sights; the adventures; the competitions; the participation; the achievement. We will uncover them, and illustrate them to you - our readers. These Diyafites deserve the attention and we will bestow it upon them. We want to let those caged birds free. It’s just like the stimulating quote Maya Angelou foretold “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.“ We have set goals, initiatives, responsibilities and duties to each and every as-sociate of the Diyafah press. It has become our personality to overcome things, learn from them, and become stronger, both personally and professionally. To be honest, we welcome those hardships. Moreover, we will wel-come you to our well written magazines with forthcoming smile, the universal welcome. We write to taste life twice, let us keep reliving. Introducing the return of another amazing Eye online! An immense thank you to our Principal and teachers for the aspiring opportunity and helping hand. We will make

the best of this creative initiative.

Day 1- With minds trained to think like entrepreneurs, the students of year 9 and 10 used their innovative skills and created Business Plans to build the empire of their choice. Day 2- The future lies in those who imagine and put imagination into action – Nothing is impossible. Having created their own business plans, the students now turned their ideas to reality at the Market Basket Fair. With the grounds surrounded by stalls filled with handcrafted items ranging from food to games to accessories, the students had their creative juices flowing, mindful of the aim of helping the less fortunate in life. Day 3- The day brought in the nerve-racking, nail-biting and anticipative experience of the Business Quiz. Not only did contestants put forward all their knowledge and analytical thinking on the line, the audience had an entertaining and educating spectacle, cheering for their favourite teams while trying to figure out the answers for themselves. Day 4- Art is vital in the business world; without it, packaging would be boxes; and boxes would be unsightly. Groups of students were given the challenge of creating their own advertisement during the Advertisement Event – a chal-lenge to promote a product in limited time – the results displayed innovation and creativity at its best. Also, the au-dience questioned their stance in a controversial debate – Is advertising needed for a business to succeed ? Day 5- Students were given the opportunity to showcase and witness all the effort put in to make the Business Week a success through an Exhibition. A great way to conclude the week, all the determination and hard work put in by the teachers and students were well appreciated . Muskan Kheskani, Year 10G

Veins of Donation AlDiyafah is known for its magnanimous efforts of reaching out to the community, to provide support for

different needs. The Blood donation camp held on 20th April, was one such event. The school welcomed everyone - from the students, alumni, support staff to parents and teachers encouraging them to pitch in to help the society. A record breaking turnout of 158 donors, of which 101 successfully donated 450 ml of blood each.

NEPAL RELIEF AID Serving those who are in desperate need of help is perhaps the most noble deed one can do and we Diyafites

firmly believe in the quote ”We rise by lifting others.’’

The disastrous earthquake that hit Nepal twice in the past month has stricken everyone, both emotionally and

physically. A generous load of necessities such as pulses, milk powder, rice, sugar, canned food and blankets was

gathered and packed into cartons. It wasn't the number that mattered but rather the intention, and with that in

mind, Diyafah sent 40 fully filled cartons to the UAE Red Crescent Society for Nepal Relief. Kudos to all the stu-

dents and teachers who contributed whole heartedly for this noble cause.

Off to our big school Pint-sized purple robes with contrast mustard fluting, munchkin square hats with yellow tassels; paired with shiny shoes and adorable smiles, and you have a little scholar waiting to graduate. The youngest pupils of Diyafah were felicitated with colourful graduating certificates on the 4th of May; marking the end of a brief learning, developing and convivial journey and the opening of a whole new chapter…’Primary School’. They stood well-disciplined as fiery Diyafites, swinging their silk gowns while singing and entertaining their mummies and daddies. The students earned their ‘diplomas’ from the Principal Mrs. Neeta Shetty and their dear teachers; while proud, tearful parents were in their peak of ecstasy taking pictures of their blooming buds. An memorable moment for all, as the graduating class of 2028 leaves their FS years behind them and jumps onto the next stepping stone of their lives. Sana Salam, Year 10G

Out With A Bang Congratulations to the 2014-15 Education Student Council for a great year and a lot of hard work. On 18th May, the outgoing council was treated with a day out at the park. A day full of fun and frolic- in spite of the sweltering heat. Mariam Abid, Year 8G1

Diyafites step closer to big time Diyafah’s undefeatable and vigorous aptitudes in the zealous field of sports has shone in an impressive way yet again. After the astonishing victory against the St. Mary’s Catholic School leading the team clinching the trophy on 24th April 2015; the students have, yet again, managed to mark their name among the sports stars of not only UAE, but of the world. 3 Diyafites; Rachael, Dharini and Kiara will be having the opportunity of showcasing their dynamic talent on the football field by travelling to Denmark and playing for the Under 16 Dana Cup. From all around the globe, an estimate of 20,000 participants are expected to take part in this prestigious tournament which is scheduled to be held from 17th July, 2015 to 25th July, 2015. Furthermore, 4 other Diyafites - Rhea, Shantel, Sachi and Sowmya will be travelling to Spain to play for the Donosti Cup; a grand-scale football tournament which is scheduled to be held from 3rd July, 2015 to 14thJuly, 2015. The Diyafah family wishes these gifted girls the best of luck in their sporting endeavours and hope for them to showcase their impressive talent to the world.

Red Wins the Gold

An intense competition finally comes to an end. The 4 Houses have been battling for the one and only House Cup. It has generally been a tight race, and students have worked extremely hard to achieve points for their respective houses. From attending competitions to winning them; from excellent class behaviour to answering challenging questions; all the points scored are added up and displayed on the House point score board. The inter- house basketball and football was our last event. The final scores placed Albert Einstein house at 3rd position and William Wordsworth House at 2nd position. But the Marco Polo House proudly reigned supreme with first place! Loud cheers rang around the place as vice captains Shanaya Crasto and Eric Santos stepped for-ward, along with the house leaders of the Primary school, and prominent achievers to hold the marvellous trophy.

A Don amongst the Stars

30th April 2015 was indeed a day to be remembered; it was the day the students of the senior section were given an opportunity to witness a truly awe-inspiring individual who had found time, amidst his multifarious activities, to visit schools around UAE. And fortunately, Diyafah had been one of the stops of Dr. Donald Thomas; a retired as-tronaut and a man who held one of the most significant positions within NASA by serving as an International Space Station Program Scientist overseeing NASA experiments performed on the International Space Station. He has also claimed the momentous record of the highest flight duration in space with an overall of 1040 hours on a frame of 4 mission and is also the recipient of exceptional tokens of appreciation for his hard work and dedication in the form of 5 awards coupled with 6 medals from NASA throughout his career. Dr Thomas spent a good one hour in the packed AV room. He shared several anecdotes of the time he spent on space and also the story of the perseverance of his attempts to reach the stars. He also took the time to answer a few questions that the students posed. The Diyafites were bowled over by this ‘down to earth’ star. The visit and talk by Dr Donald Thomas has definitely inspired many of the young viewers to pursue a career in space. Truly an inspiring man ! Zoha Rafique, Year 10G
