It Happened One Night1. Relate what was discussed in class or
the text to the screening.
This film was about spoiled Elli whomarries, an aviator whom her father is

that her father wont accept herrelationship she throws herself off the

New York and be with her husband. On
the bus to New York she meets Peter, areporter. After Elli suitcase is stolen, Peter
tells her that he will help her if she gives
him, her story as an exclusive. Having
nothing on her, she eventually accepts hisoffer. As they spend time together, Elli
falls in love with Peter but doesnt realizeit until she is about to get to New York.
On the last night, she begs Peter not to
take her to her husband, but instead let her
be with him because she loves him. Peter, who is also in love with her, tells her to go

her formal wedding, Ellies father asks Peter if he loves her, he says yes. The father while
walking her daughter away tells her that Peter loves her and that there is a truck waitingfor her at the back. Ellie runs away in search of Peter.
In class was mention about the production code, every film needed to follow the codes. It
happened one night is an example of having followed the code rules, although it wasfilmed by the Post-code era. However, this film has nothing from the Pre-code time, for
example the film doesnt show anything explicit, like nudity, vulgar talk.
It Happened One Night was filmedby Frank Capra in the beginning of the Post-codetime. Women obtained more respect and were allowed to adopt the characteristics androles of men. Like, you could see Ellie drinking or smoking in some scenes, these were
the characteristics of men before the Post-code time, but it changed.
It happened one night it an example of what it is called screwball Comedy. According
to how was defined in class screwball comedy means war of sexes meaning that womenand men could have the same characteristics and were equal.

2)Find a related article and summarize the content.
It Happened One Night(1934)
http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/12648/It-Happened-One-Night/articles.html
This article briefly summarizes the story of how Peter and Ellie meet and how they fell in
love. It also mentions that the film lead to many more screwball films at that time but
could not be compared to It happened one night. Clark Gable and Claudette Colbertapparently behave like brats during the filming of this film, making Capra very annoyed.
The original story of It Happened One Night was titled Night Bus, it was co-written and
directed by Capra, one of the best known directors nominated for an Academy award. At
the beginning neither Gable nor Colbert were thought as the main roles but because thestars that Capra wanted deny the proposition, he had nothing else but to ask Cable and
Colbert. Gable accepted the role after seeing that his role was similar to himself. Unlike
Colbert, who only accepted because of the 50,000 dollars she would get after filming.Colbert, who from the start didnt want to be in thefilm because of a previous film with
Capra, was a little problematic at following Capras instructions, for example Colbert
didnt want to be filmed while taking her cloth or showing her leg to stop a car.
The impact of this film during that time was strong, for man stop wearing undershirtsafter Peter scene with no undershirt was exposed. His bare chest and Colberts leg were
the sensation of that time. Capra explained that the reason for Gable not to wear an
undershirt was because there was no graceful way he could take it off. The style of Gablein It happened one Night became a fashion trend.
The reviews n that movie were very positive saying that it brought a new kind of energy
slangy, combative, humorous, unsentimental. It Happened One Night was nothing
similar to what Colbert thought, because it was nominated for five categories at theOscars.
3)Apply the article to the film screened in class.
The way I can apply this article to the film is that in fact this film is one of the firstscrewball films ever made. It is true when it says that Colbert didnt want to undress in
the film because you dont see
her getting undressed. You can
see a Colbert unbuttoning hercloth and then getting in bed.
The reason why the first star
Capra asked to act Ellies role
deny was because by that timethere were a lot of films
depicting a trip on a bus, and
basically It Happened OneNight most scenes are on a bus.

The article says that Gable demonstrates how men take off their cloth in a particular way,
this statement could be proven because of the natural and simple way Peter takes his
cloth off.
The article says that the reviews on this film say that this film is very humorous, anyonecould that has watched this film can approve to this.
4) Write a critical analysis of the film, includingyour personal opinion, formed as a result of the screening, class
discussions, text materialand the article.
I really like this film because of the way Peter or Gable acts. His character is of a man
who is most of the time very sarcastic to Ellie. He has this vive of knowing it all and acts
like a very interesting guy. I have seen a lot of movies with the same kind of theme but
different setting; however, it is very interesting watching how was this theme of richspoiled girl and middle-class man meet and fall in love was born. I like one of the last
scenes when Ellie is walking down the isle not because of the wedding, but because I got
to see how filming was back then. I saw like three film cameras were being operated bymen, who were turning like a paddle on the camera. I also saw a scene were there was a
cut that didnt match to the scene to what it was cut to. At that moment, I felt that that
tiny error may have not been considered an error or bad edit in those times.
