IMPROVE THE STREETS
Honolulu is steadily improving yearby ycarj in architectural solidity andbeauty The town has exhibited aston-
ishing
¬
j ecuperativc vitality in the rapidity with which the large burnt districtof April last has been covered in greatpart with substantial brick structuresin place of the agglomeration ofwocden shanties of ld Chinatown
When tne regular improvement inbuildings is contemplated and themarvellous rehabilitation in superiorstyle of a quarter devastated by fire is
seen thereis something truly astonish
nig in the want of progress if notActual retrogression manifested in theprimitive condition of the streets Themore the citys architecture advancestlie more tipfayerable will the ruggedmud roads separating the handsomelines of buildings reflect upon the fameof- - Honolulu It is all nonsense inview of the progress of the city in solidnealth of fabrics to say that betterstreets cannot be afforded at presentThey can and should be provided afterthe best methods and largely at the
cst of owner of property adjacent tpthem TheWis provision in the loanactforimproving roads throughout theKiagdora and streets in the city ofHonolulu to the amount of 150000Whatever proportion of this is to bespent ia the city no attempt at dividingit over the whole territory should bemade That would be spreading it outso thin that the result would be all
wn out before the public had time torealize any improvement Let themoney be spent only upon durablework if it be pnly for a lenglh of few
hundred yards What is wanted arcpaved streets not banks of mud andgravel or imperfect imitations af maca- -
owners should have bill prepared for
the next session of the Legislaturemaking especial provision foratl the prinqipql streotj paved duringthe next the means to be pro-
vided¬

of the cost Such policy will pay allproperty owners and be of Jmrncasura
advantage the Kingdom Thi3is a proposition that docs not need to bedemonstrated

Prisoners Again
Complaint is made of prisoners beingsent out with carti to work on theroads without any competent personin control of them As a result thevehicles are often left standing in thtwav of travel while the prisoners aretakiniz thincs easy under the shade oftrees It is even asserted that pri ¬
soners will strin and ro in swimming atthe Waikiki bridge in full view ofeverybody who passes tharjway in car ¬
riage or on foot If such practices arenot within the meaning of sentences to
hard labor the judges might havethe prison authorities hauled up for

IMPROVE THE STREETS
Honolulu is steadily improving yearby ycarj in architectural solidity andbeauty The town has exhibited aston-
ishing
¬
j ecuperativc vitality in the rapidity with which the large burnt districtof April last has been covered in greatpart with substantial brick structuresin place of the agglomeration ofwocden shanties of ld Chinatown
When tne regular improvement inbuildings is contemplated and themarvellous rehabilitation in superiorstyle of a quarter devastated by fire is
seen thereis something truly astonish
nig in the want of progress if notActual retrogression manifested in theprimitive condition of the streets Themore the citys architecture advancestlie more tipfayerable will the ruggedmud roads separating the handsomelines of buildings reflect upon the fameof- - Honolulu It is all nonsense inview of the progress of the city in solidnealth of fabrics to say that betterstreets cannot be afforded at presentThey can and should be provided afterthe best methods and largely at the
cst of owner of property adjacent tpthem TheWis provision in the loanactforimproving roads throughout theKiagdora and streets in the city ofHonolulu to the amount of 150000Whatever proportion of this is to bespent ia the city no attempt at dividingit over the whole territory should bemade That would be spreading it outso thin that the result would be all
wn out before the public had time torealize any improvement Let themoney be spent only upon durablework if it be pnly for a lenglh of few
hundred yards What is wanted arcpaved streets not banks of mud andgravel or imperfect imitations af maca- -
owners should have bill prepared for
the next session of the Legislaturemaking especial provision foratl the prinqipql streotj paved duringthe next the means to be pro-
vided¬
