ST. JOSEPH'S GUILD (for boys) has been re-or-ganized and placed by the Rector under the man-agement of the Sons of St. Sebastian. It nowconsists of two divisions, namely, the Bethlehemand Nazareth Chapters, the former meeting inthe afternoon, the latter in the evening ofWednesdays. The two Chapters will come to-gether on one Wednesday evening in each monthfor service. The special feature of the Bethle-hem Chapter is to be religious instruction, and itis designed for those boys who are not in theSunday School, whilst the Nazareth Chapter willpartake somewhat of the nature of an industrialschool, and is intended for those who are em-ployed during the day. Every boy in the parishshould be in one or other division of the Guild.

THERE will necessarily be a good deal of expensein carrying on the work mapped out for thisGuild, and the Sons of St. Sebastian look con-fidently to their fellow parishioners to aid themin this matter.

Annual subscriptions (which need not be large)would be the most useful kind of assistance.Mr. W. Leslie Brower, 132 East 24th Street, willgladly receive contributions from those who areinterested in the welfare of the boys.

THE Librarian of St. Joseph's Guild makes aplea for more books. The library is in admirablecondition, is greatly appreciated, but is pitiablysmall. A volume or two, or an equivalent inmoney, would be a graceful and welcome tokenof interest from any of our friends.

SOME one who understands wood-carving isasked to volunteer his or her services in instruct-ing the boys of St. Joseph's Guild. Have we noartistic friend, within or without the parish, whowill co-operate with us in this way ?

THE summer vacation being now well over, theGuilds will all resume their regular meetings andwork. New members are always welcome, andthis is an excellent time to seek admission to anyof the parochial Guilds.

THE Chapel is now being fitted up and deco-rated, and will shortly be available for Worship.In its completed form it promises to be entirelyworthy of the sacred purpose for which it is in-tended.

ANOTHER recent embellishment is the memorialstatue of St. Paul, which has been placed over thesounding-board of the pulpit. Gifts toward thecompletion_ of the interior decoration of theObiircn ar"B .always acceptable, and are most ap-propriate eivh'ef as memorials of the dead, or asthank-offerings.

To many of our fellow-parishioners the name"Sons of St. Sebastian" has doubtless an unfa-miliar sound, but one which will, we trust, soonbecome familiar and welcome as the face of anold and valued friend.

The Sons of St. Sebastian is an organization ofmen of the parish whose aim is to assist the clergyas far as possible by taking charge, under pas-toral direction and guidance, of that large fieldfor lay work which exists in every parish. In alltheir undertakings they hope to meet with thehearty co-operation of the other members of theparish, Avithout which they would surely findthemselves insufficient for so large a task—theirnumbers being at present very small.

ALMOST six years ago in St. James' parish, Chi-cago, was started an organization of laymen, "forthe spread of Christ's Kingdom among youngmen," known as the "Brotherhood of St. An-drew." It has since spread over our entire coun-try and overflowed into Canada and Great Britain.

With this Brotherhood, now become a livingpower in the Church, we have affiliated, for thestrength in well-doing to be derived from themoral force of so large and earnest a body ofworkers, and to add whatever within us lies tothe support of others laboring in the same field.

SEVERAL, members of the Sons of St. Sebastianattended by invitation the service of the ChurchAssociation for the Advancement of the Interestsof Labor, at Trinity Church on Sunday evening,September 6. The service was very hearty andimpressive. Ritually, it was a notable occasion,for the priest who sang the office was vested in asplendid cloth-of-gold cope, and there were sev-eral acolytes wearing red cassocks. FatherAdams of St. Paul's Cathedral, Buffalo, preachedan admirable sermon, and the Rev. J. 0. S. Hunt-ington briefly explained the objects of the So-ciety.

A SPECIAL Service will be held in the Churchon Sunday, October 18th, at 8 p. m., on which oc-casion the Rev. Dr. G. H. S. Walpole, Professorof Systematic Divinity in the General Theologi-cal Seminary, will preach before the Brother-hood All the Chapters in the city and neighbor-hood have been invited to attend, and it is ex-pected that a great many will be present.

IN our next issue we hope to give a succinctaccount of the proceedings of the Annual Con-vention of the Brotherhood, which is to be heldduring this month in St. Louis, and to which wehope to send delegates.

THE ST. LOUIS CONVENTION.—It is of the verygreatest importance that each Chapter of theBrotherhood should send a delegation. It is im-portant to the Brotherhood; it is more importantto the Chapter. The delegates to former conven-

tions have gone home informed, strengthened,.and inspired.

* * * * * *In considering plans for sending delegates the

question of money comes to the fore in everyChapter. In general it may be said where there'sa will there's a way. If a Chapter really wantsto send a delegation it will take hold of the workwith an energy that will compel success. Arrangefor a public service to arouse interest in theBrotherhood and the convention. State the ob-ject for which the money is needed and ask forcontributions. The funds of a parish or of itswealthier members can hardly be better investedthan in sending delegates to the convention.They will come back wiser, stronger, betterChristians, Churchmen and parish workers.—St.Andrew's Cross.

OUR PATRON.St. Sebastian lived at the close of the third cen-

tury. He was a fervent soldier of Christ at thesame time that he served in the army of theEmperor. Brave, prudent and upright, so highlywas he regarded that, whilst still a young man,he was elevated to the command of the firstcohort.

His rank and office enabled him to be of serviceto those who were imprisoned for the faith ofChrist. He relieved their sufferings, and urgedthem to constancy.

History has preserved one very striking illus-tration of his nobility and zeal, which howeverfor lack of space must be reserved for another oc-casion. It is a most thrilling and interestingstory and would suffer by being condensed.

The care which our Saint took of Christianprisoners, and the efforts he made to stimulatetheir courage, could not long remain secret. Hewas denounced to the Emperor Diocletian, whosent for him and exclaimed, "What! I have hadthee about my person, and thou hast conspiredagainst my safety ! "

Sebastian answered, "I pray daily for thy safetyand for the prosperity of the state to the God ofHeaven, for I reckon no help can be got fromgods of stone."

Then Diocletian ordered him to be taken outinto a field, and be shot to death with arrows.Therefore the soldiers placed him as their mark,and left him for dead, bristling with arrows. Buta certain widow, finding that he still lived, tookhim to her abode, and nursed him till he was con-valescent.

One day, as he began to walk, the Emperorpassed. He heard the familiar trumpet notes,which told him of the Emperor's approach, andcrept out to meet him. " Diocletian !" he criedout, " False are the words of thy idol priests, mysovereign, who say that we Christians are adver-saries to the state ; who cease not to pray for thywelfare and that of the realm."

"What!" exclaimed the Emperor, "Art thouSebastian?"

" I am Sebastian, raised as from death to wit-ness against thee for thy cruel persecution of theservants of Christ."

Then the Emperor, in a rage, ordered him to bebeaten with clubs, and his body to be cast intothe sewer.

When this had been done, a devout woman bynight rescued the body and buried it reverentlyin her own garden,

Catho-lic Churchmen teach that sanctification of laborand self-sacrifice for others is a part of the Chris-tian life, which must be united with a certainFaith and a reasonable, religious and holy Hope,in Charity with God—as well as with the world.

BY WAY OF INTRODUCTION".

On venturing into the arena of ecclesiasticaljournalism we are not unconscious of the serious-ness of the undertaking ; therefore are we fain topause here upon the threshold, and with a depre-catory bow to those who already so ably occupythe field, to explain that we come not as competi-tors for the honors which belong to the great, butonly to fulfil, according to our ability, a veryhumble mission.

There are, as we know, various spheres of use-fulness in the Church's service. Theologians,preachers, missionaries, polemical champions

and parish priests—all are necessary to theadvancement of the work, and each finds avoice for his special department in the publicpress. We shall not then be taken as intrudingwhen we say that our role is none of these.

As the project of a society of laymen, THEARROW will not be expected to be too theologicalor didactic. It nevertheless has its message.Without presuming to invade the pulpit, orscale the steps of the Episcopal throne, itsaim will be to speak, as laymen may legiti-mately speak to laymen, on subjects of ourhighest interest and deepest devotion, and tocarry abroad, to places where perhaps the clergycannot always penetrate, the seed of CatholicTruth.

Although emanating from a well-known NewYork parish, we hope to be more than a parishpaper, and shall not address ourselves exclu-sively to our co-parishioners. Nevertheless wefeel that we may justly look to them for a mostgenerous support of our undertaking—which in-deed we hope they may regard as their's also.

We venture also to believe that the space allot-ted in these columns to the affairs of the parishwill not detract from the general acceptability ofthe paper, as the friends of the Church of St.Mary the Virgin are by no means confined "withinour own parochial limits. Some account of the"work carried on by a Church for so many yearsin the van of the Catholic Revival in this coun-try should lend a touch of living interest to theadvocacy of a cause to which both the parish andthis paper are devoted.

CATHOLICS AND CATHOLICS.

We hear occasionally objections to the use ofthe term Catholic in what is called a "partysense." It is said that none have a right to arro-gate exclusively to themselves, or to their own"party," a title which is the common inheritanceof all members of Christ's Holy Catholic Church.Without altogether disputing this position, wewould remind objectors that there are Catholicsand Catholics. For instance, there are goodCatholics and bad Catholics. Those who falsifj*-the Church's doctrine and openly slight her pre-cepts may perhaps, by virtue of their baptism, beCatholics, but they could hardly be called " goodCatholics."

The Catholic par excellence is the one who issuch not only by birthright but by life andloyalty.

The best criterion of Catholicity is obedience tothe Church—the Holy Catholic Church of all theages. The Church, being Divine, never contra-dicts herself. The Faith which she guards is im-mutable. It is true that " traditions and cere-monies," as we are instructed in the Article, maybe changed, but until so changed or modified by

ecclesiastical decrees of sufficient authority, theycontinue to be binding upon the consciencesof all Catholics. Even in such matters theChurch does not contradict herself, for she neverreverses her own immemorial customs ; she onlymodifies them " according to diversities of coun-tries, times and men's manners " (Art. xxxiv); arule which of course leaves the principles involveduntouched.

In the light of these facts it is not difficult todistinguish between good and bad Catholics.

By way of illustration. It is an ancient tradi-tion of the Church to observe Friday, in memoryof Our Lord's Crucifixion, as a day of abstinencefrom flesh-meat. There are some places, whereby ecclesiastical indulgence this rule is at presentin abeyance, but in our own country it has beenre-enforced with the highest degree of authority,and given the additional emphasis of a place inthe Prayer Book. People who ignore this obliga-tion, not having proper dispensations, may ofcourse be Catholics, but it is quite evident thatthey are not good Catholics.

Another tradition, universal and unbrokenthroughout the Church's history, and having theweight of repeated conciliar authority, is the ruleof Fasting Communion. Those who "throughprivate judgment, willingly and purposely" do"openly break" this tradition are condemned bythe terms of Art xxxiv, which says that they"ought to be rebuked openly (that others mayfear to do the like)," as they that "offendagainst the common order of the Church," andwound "the consciences of the weak brethren."

One only needs to attend the late Mass on thefirst Sunday in the month in some of ourchurches, to be convinced how many bad Catho-lics of this sort there are.

Another tradition requires the faithful to bepresent at the Holy Sacrifice every Sunday andon certain Holy-days. The very construction ofour Prayer Book proves, without the aid of thisvenerable tradition, that the Eucharist is the ser-vice of Sunday. In churches where this Catholicobligation is taught there are usualty severalMasses celebrated on Sundays, and the aggregateattendance at these is very much in excess ofthat at all other services. On the other hand,there are many churches in which the case isaltogether reversed, and so it comes that numbersof "Catholics'' (unquestionably such by spiritualbirthright) do not hear Mass more than two orthree times in a 3rear.

All which illustrates forcibly the fact that thereare Catholics and Catholics.

UNITY.The healing of the divisions of Christendom is

a question which just now commands verygeneral interest.

To the heart of the Church it has always beena cherished object, so that it was natural thatthe Bishops should be the first to hold forth theolive-branch and offer some practical suggestions.But the Episcopal olive-branch Avas from the firstlooked upon askance. The gleam of an ancient

weapon was thought to be detected beneath thespecious foliage of fair-spoken Avords, and theconclusion finally arrived at by those to whomit Avas addressed seems to be that the message ofpeace is after all a demand for surrender.

So the olive-branch has failed. But still wemust work and pray for Unity ; though let it befrankly admitted that we knoAv of no unity worththe having save that within the Church

We are often reminded that we of the EpiscopalChurch are a feeble folk, as far as numbers go,and therefore should be less confident in ourclaims

As a method of argument this is not altogetherconvincing, and yet it has some weight ; for it isof the utmost importance to us Catholics to knoAvthat we are in substantial agreement with thegreat body of Christian people in every age. TheVincentian rule, which is the standard of ortho-doxy, commits us uncompromisingly to the ma-jority; only it is a majority extending throughoutall ages and countries. This is a Arery differentmatter from a mere accidental majority in anyparticular country, or at any particular period.

If then we seem to our brethren as Avanting inhumility, it is on account of a conviction that noother body of Christians in this Western land canstand this test so well as the, so-called, EpiscopalChurch.

The lack of accord between ourseb-es and thePresbyterians or Baptists, for instance, is toCatholics a source of sincere regret. We do notrejoice in aloofness. But in order to join handsAvith them we must separate ourselves radicallyin polity, faith and Avorship, not only from theCatholic world to-day, but from the Christianpeople of eArery period down to the sixteenthcentury.

This Ave cannot do; for we are most keenlyalive to the Communion of Saints, Avhich knitstogether in one grand fellowship the faithful ofevery age. It is the " rule of the majority " whichholds us to the countless millions of those earliercenturies, rather than to the comparatively feAvwho in modern times have detached themselvesfrom the rest of Christendom. The piety and de-votion of these Ave may and do admire. Some-times they even aAvake in us a longing to ignorethe principles which hold us apart, and to castourselves into their arms. But, after all, AVIIO isresponsible for this alienation ? Are we ? Wedid not withdraw ourseh^es from them. Thebreach was not made by us, nor does it lie en-tirely Avith us to heal it.

Not that the Church, in our opinion, is alto-gether without blame in the matter

The beacon of Catholic Truth has not alwaysburned too brightly in our midst. Those whohave turned longing eyes in our direction haA-esometimes failed to catch a gleam of light fromthe " City set upon an hill." And then for us todisguise the walls and to paint upon the gate aforeign and misleading sign was surely neitherwise nor charitable.

Should not these mistakes, to call them by noharsher name, be remedied as our first contribu-tion to the cause of Christian Unity ?

When we shall have ceased to Avear the appear-ance of a Protestant sect Ave may be able to showthat, in our Catholic faith and orders and sacra-ments, we possess something which the non-Catholic AA'orld needs.

When that is properly demonstrated the causeof Unity will have made substantial progress.

Any communicant may be admitted to the So-ciety by a priest, on promising to fulfil the rules.The priest shall bless a small crucifix and deliverit to the aspirant with these words :

Remember death. Pray for all souls in theiragony. And the Passion of our Lord JesusChrist console thee in thy last hour. Amen.

This Society is not intended to be confined toany one parish Any communicant of the Churchmay become a member.

A Mass for the intentions of the Society is saidin the Church of St. Mary the Virgin on the lastSaturday in the month, preceded on the day be-fore by devotions, and occasionally an address,after Evening Prayer.

The devotion called Bonn Mors, with someother prayers appropriate to the Society, willshortly be printed.

For further particulars application should bemade to the Rev. Clergy of St. Mary the Virgin.

THE Crucifixes for the Society of Bona Morsare now ready, and will be blessed and distributedat the monthly meeting, Friday, October 30 Itis hoped there will be a full attendance on thisoccasion.

THE STOCK EXCHANGE.To A person unaccustomed to the noise and

rush of a busy city's life, the opening of the StockExchange must seem like the infernal regions.Every morning, at the stroke of ten, the Presi-dent brings his mallet down upon the desk, andbusiness opens with a howl and rush—everyonemadly running about, yelling and making allkinds of gesticulations.

A stranger might ask Why all this hubbub ?

Well, I suppose it would not be far wrong to say—This is one of the greatest gambling dens inthe world, and every minute of time may meanto these men great loss or great profit.

After three o'clock the Exchange is deserted,the brokers going here and there trying to forgetthe excitement. Yet, though they forget it, thelife wears upon them, and soon they become old,very rich or very poor—generally the latter.

IT IS discouraging to see how few men are will-ing to devote a little of their time to the serviceof the Church.

To the average business man the religious sideof life is a blank. His whole soul is in Ms work,and when his work is done his life too is ended.To one seriously reflecting, this state of affairscan hardly be satisfactory.

There are of course men who are at the sametime most successful in business and thoroughlydevoted to their Church, but they are the ex-ception.

The work of the Brotherhood in helping youngmen to keep religion from being crowded out oftheir lives by business is something to be trulygrateful for.

NOTES AND QUERIES.THE RATIONALE OF RITUAL.

Courtesy is generally regarded as indispen-sable in all social relations. It is expressedin a variety of ways, as for instance, by the rais-ing of the hat, bowing, etc. It is not considerednecessary to be able to give an account of theorigin and symbolism of such acts. It is sufficientthat everybody understands the principles under-lying them.

The same thing, translated into the higherrelations of Religion, is called Reverence, anafinds its natural expression in Ritual. Ritual ikjust as requisite to our due intercourse withHeaven as are the social amenities in our deal-ings with man. In the same way too the generalprinciple underlying all Ritual is of more im-portance than the exact symbolism of each littledetail.

It is the business of priests and some others tounderstand the minutice of Ritual, just as it is thebusiness of the officials of a court of justice, aparliamentary body, or a secret society, to beexpert in the smallest particulars of its procedure.

There is always a right and a wrong way ofdoing things ; and it is the definition by rule ofwhat is the right way which makes ceremonialnecessary, whether it be in matters of worship orin the marshalling of an army.

Persons who have been unaccustomed to theuse of much ritual are inclined to concern them-selves overmuch as to the precise meaning ofevery gesture and vestment. One could hardlyimagine a less edifying method of assisting atthe celebration of Divine Mysteries than thatof being on the alert for each detail in orderto apply its proper interpretation. In the ordi-nary affairs of life we do not stop to ask why aman wears two buttons on the back of his coat,nor should we accuse him of stupid mummery ifunable to give a satisfactory answer.

Life indeed would become a burden Avere wecompelled to furnish symbolic reasons for every-thing we do; to explain, for instance, why it is

"bad form" to cut one's lettuce with a knife, orthe subtle significance of the only direction inwhich it is permissable to tip a soup-plate. Tothose with a taste for inquiring into tliese things,no doubt it might be made an interesting research.

The Ritual of the Church is by no means on alevel with such matters. Its study is full ofinterest and instruction, and cannot fail to beedifying to those who systematically take it up.But it is a science, and must be dealt with com-prehensively, and not piece-meal.

What we wish to insist upon is that it is notnecessary to be an expert in ritual in order to par-ticipate intelligently in Catholic worship. Oneneed not know why the priest wears a maniple onhis left arm, or kisses the altar, or stands at onepart of the altar at one time, and at another part atanother time, in order to fully enter into the mean-ing of the august and holy Service which heexecutes.

However, whatever may be said of the ceremo-nial affecting priests and others in the sanctuary,the ritual acts proper to the ordinary layman areneither many nor elaborate, nor is their meaningthe least obscure. Such matters it concerns usall to know about and understand. We commendvery heartily a book advertised in our columns,The Congregation in Church, as affording muchexcellent inforn__ .ion on this subject

THE universal use of the mixed chalice wasdue, in the first instance, to the fact that themingling, after the practice of the Jews, tookplace at the Institution ; afterwards mysticalreasons were given for the practice, such as thatit typified the union of the Two Natures of OurLord united in One Person, and also that it sym-bolized the blood and water which flowed fromthe side of Christ upon the Cross.—Church Times.

The Catholic party in America is too powerfuland wide-spread to be seriously injured or hin-dered by anything Broad Churchmen may do.Dr. Brooks is scarcely "broader" than the authorsof Lux Mundi, so that much of the outcry againsthim is uncalled for and unjust. But his sym-

pathies have always turned in the Protestantdirection rather than the Catholic ; his sacrament-al views are, or were, Zwinglian; he bitterlyopposed the movement for the change of thename of the Church; and he is fond of fratern-izing with Unitarians, though a pronounced Trini-tarian himself. He is a Colossus among insig-nificant Low Churchmen, and was elected Bishopbecause of personal popularity, not because ofpersonal views.—Church Review, (Eng.)

The question of the change of the official titleof the Church has fallen into abeyance for a time,because it was felt that pressing it might lead toa schism, and because High Churchmen couldnot agree upon a title to supersede "ProtestantEpiscopal." Our present name is hard for theCatholics to swallow, but it is no worse than theThirty nine Articles, which admit of orthodox in-terpretations, but are apt to mislead, and do moreto hinder the advance of Catholic truth andworship than all other causes put together. Ifwe claim Catholicity to our Roman brethren, theysay, "But is not your Church the 'ProtestantEpiscopal?'"—Church Review, (Eng)

When we reflect that the United States has six-ty million people, and our Church has less than amillion communicants, and that in the world atlarge the Buddhists alone outnumber the Christ-ians, the conclusion is inevitable that the Churchof Christ has, to a large extent, miserably failedin her mission to men. And why, unless becauseof her divided condition ? Romanism is, pro-portionately, just as great a failure as Anglican-ism ; Protestanism, far worse. With the Churchreunited on the Anglo-Catholic basis, under theconstitutional primacy of the Bishop of Rome,might she not soon conquer the world ?—ChurchReview, (Eng.)
