Up to March 1 the children of the local public school had purchased $84.50 worth o f Thrift Stamps. Who says our kiddies are not doing their hit?

Mrs. R. J. McCabe of Pebble Beach left last week on a visit to Los Angeles o f several weeks duration.

Ray C. DeYoe piloted a fine new Dodge car into Carmsi Friday evening. Welcome to our fair city! Boost for good streets.

The terms of Carmel Martin and John Scudder as members of the Monterey Union High School Board are about to expire. They are candidates for re-election, and will be voted for at the local school election, Friday, March 29.

Otto Lachmund has written a splendid account of his experiences in the air. The letter will he printed in next week’s Pine Cone.

Next week is Holy Week. On Wednesday there will be a holy communion service at 10 a.m., and on Friday, a meditation and prayer hour from 2 to 3 p.m., at All Saints. The Easter Sunday service will he he'd at 9 a.m.

Visitors are always welcome at the Pine Cone office, but just now those in the uniform of Uncle Sam are doubly welcome. Fred Search, down from Mare Island, called Monday morning. His insignia includes a harp on his sleeve.

Another Carmel school hoy, Tom .Naredo, has joined the U. S. Naval Reserve., He is at Yerba Buena now.

Mr. and Mrs. Gustav Lau- meister drove down from Palo Alto for the week-end, combining business and pleasure.

_ Tickets for the Manzanita Club prize masque hall, on Saturday, April 6th, for the benefit of The Red Cross, are now on sale. Get your costumes ready.

B. F. Decker of San Jose, connected with the American Can Co.. was a visitor here last week, the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Decker.

Charles de Vega, in the uniform of the U. S. Naval Reserve, off on seventy-two hour leave, visited his mother here last week. He looks like a first-class fighling man.

Dr. J. L. D. Roberts is put forward by the Monterey evening paper as a candidate for Congress to succeed Hayes.

Keep this in mind: “ ANight O ff,” with a cast of all- star Carmel players, will be presented at Arts and Crafts Hall on Friday evening, April 12. Take a night off and go.

George Scliultzburg, school superintendent, was a visitor here on Sunday. He called on Probation Officer Ney Otis and W. L. Overstreet.

Donald Hale, son of Mrs. F. R. Bechdolt, and Waldo Guich- ard. brother of Miss Stella Guichard, have arrived safely in France.

The drive of March 10-17 in Carmel produced $57.65 for the Armenian and Syrian Relief Fund.

Every man, woman and child in this country, who wants to serve the country, can serve it and serve it in a very simple and effective way, says Secretary McAdoo.

That service is to lend your money to the government. Every 25 cents loaned to the government is a help at this time and practically every man, woman and child, by making some trifling sacrifice, some denial of a pleasure, or giving up some indulgence, can render the government that support.

On Saturday the entire party lunched at Palo Colorado.

In announcing the candidacy of W. J. Martin for re-election the Salinas Index says a lot of nice things about the candidate. But, unfortunately for both the ‘ wets” and “drys” alike, no mention is made as to how Mr. Martin stands on the Consitutional Amendment for Prohibition and the Rominger Bill. I f the information is not forthcoming, there will soon be a Republican “ dry” candidate in the field.

Now that the influx of spring] and summer visitors has gun. Mrs. R. J. DeYoe has es-j 1 tablished in her office a "V is it-! I ors’ Register.” Every visitor I whocrmes into Carmel will he] | asked to write in the book his, i or her name, the place from | which they came, and the j g hotel or cottage where they j |

i may be found. This will in- f ] form not only other friends, | I but will assist in the prompt § delivery of telegrams, special 1

'delivery letters, and merchan- | dise. Get your guests to l eg- | ister when they arrive. j 1

The questions the children asked after their performance last Thursday evening were not ‘‘How did I do?” "D id I miss my lines?” “ How did you like the play?” Bless their hearts, no. It was not one of j | these. One eagar miss ex- j | pressed it for all the little play- | ers by inquiring "D id we make j I twenty dollars for the Red Cross?” Yes. indeed; they raised nearly twenty-five dollars.

From the opening Oriental dance to the end of Miss Helen Falkner’s adaptation of "Snow White and Rose Red” the paoas and mammas had much to smile and nod their heads about. One of the really clever | bits of the evening’s enter-ii tainment was Mrs. Paul C. j | Prince’s prologue.

The children had intended | to go through with the entire ] | affair without the help of their; | elders, biTt before and during jg the evening they were appre- | dative of assistance from Mrs. ] | W. C. Watts, Mrs. Mary Falk- |

Nothing Else T o Do

Many of the officials in California charged with the duty of registering voters report a strong desire on the part of the electorate to vote for W ilson again, to’ elect him President for a third term.

Citizens, when requested to state their party affiliations, almost invariably reply in effect, “ I ’ll register my regular party, but I ’ m for Wilson again.”

This is as it should be. If the United States be still at war when the national nominating conventions meet, there is but one wise and patriotic duty to perform; that is, to nominate the President—and g” home.

It will be notice to our enemies that the American people are a unit behind the Chief Executive.

Be a potatriot. Now is the time to prepare the ground and plant your vegetable and garden seeds. Half an hour a day will be bring surprizing results.

M" H

As in other small towns, and in large ones, too. the editor of the Pine Cone is frequently not only blamed, but praised often, for matters with which he had nothing whatever to do. |

Last Saturday dawned bright jnnd beautiful, and the Boys’

o th e r a r t ic le s too n u m ero u s to j rived at the beach, where theyI were to have their bonfire and | lunch, they were too hungry j to waste time on- a fire, so dis- | posed of everything eatable j without ceremony.: The objective point beingS the Museum, w e gathered there, where the boys flitted from one exhibit to another, not exactly like butterflies, but with no more apparent plan.

The lure of a croquet ground, which they saw at the side of the building, was a strong one, and the boys who were playing, courteously gave way to the Carmel boys. Now our boys are planning for a ground in Carmel.

About 3:30 the friendly autos appeared, and each boy being furnished with an apple as a silencer, we started on our homeward way.

At the meeting Monday a committee was appointed to look into the croquet proposition.

Clothing is needed for the destitute people of northern France and Belgium. Five thousand tons are to be sent over. The need is very urgent. If you have discarded servicible garments to contribute, take them to the office of the Carmel Development Co. before 5 o’clock this evening.

Comfort kits are being prepared for the boys who have gone and are going from Carmel. As the supplies for these are given by individuals, donations of articles and money will be received by Miss J. M. Culbertson-

Having been o.k.’d by the county exemption board, Floyd Glotzbach, the husky stage driver, is awaiting orders to join the service. For his outfit of woolens, provided by various ladies, he tenders his thanks.
