MARCH

APRIL

From Mr Anthony Rowlands - Principal of BIS Hanoi

I am pleased to report that this week I have formally dispatched, on behalf of BIS Hanoi, our application to become members of the Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA). In the next few months, we will receive a visit from members of FOBISIA’s executive committee as part

of the application procedure. FOBISIA is a well-established organisation which has been in existence since 1988 when 5 Principals from British-style schools in Jakarta, Singapore, Manila, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur met at the British International School Jakarta. From those early days the federation has grown to a current membership of 49 schools. On its website it is stated that “The overall aim of the Federation is to promote excellence in good British-style education in our schools, and to provide opportunities for inter-school competitions and enrichment programmes.”

The schools in the federation support each other in many ways:

- Two meetings a year for school Principals- An annual Senior Leadership Conference- Professional Development opportunities for academic and administration staff- Sporting competitions between member schools- Music and cultural events involving member schools

These events take place in various member schools around the region. This will allow our students and staff the opportunity to visit other quality schools and meet likeminded people. There is a strong commitment from

our group of schools to FOBISIA. Mr Shaun Williams, the BIS Group CEO, has recently completed two years as Chairman of the federation and both of our schools in HCMC are currently members. This commitment is clearly shown by the following statement from Mr. Williams and the photographs:

“The BIS Group of Schools in Vietnam were delighted to welcome 49 Head Teachers and Principals from around the region to Vietnam last weekend. The Annual FOBISIA Business Meeting was jointly hosted by BIS and BVIS in HCMC. FOBISIA is a membership organisation of the very best British-style schools in the region. Parents will know FOBISIA for the many events that it organises for children as well as providing regional training for teachers. The Heads came from all around the Asia region including Mongolia and India and conducted a very productive two days of business.”

I will keep the school community updated with regard to the progress of our application. I do hope that you all have a most pleasant weekend.

Last week was British Science Week and BIS had several events to mark this week. Many thanks to Ms Orchard and the Science department for their competitions, activities in class and the superb assembly delivered to both Primary and Secondary sections. The finale was a show on Friday by Dr

Froth, a bubblelogist from Australia, which Key Stage 4 enjoyed along with the Primary School. Giang and Viet Long had the privilege of being put inside a bubble in front of the excited crowd.

Science Week fitted in with Ms Vaughan and I meeting Julia Guillard, ex-Prime Minister of Australia, in Macau. We went to a very thought provoking talk given by her on the development of education in the coming years based on changes in technology, gender equality and investment models around the world. We, and our colleagues at BIS HCMC, were lucky enough to meet her

Vietnam and BIS.

This weekend, the History Club have their first trip.

From Mr Christopher Short - Head of Secondary

They are going to the Temple of Literature and the British University in Vietnam to compare and contrast older and more modern models of higher education. I look forward to hearing what they have learnt on Monday.

Mr Byrne has a countdown of teaching days to the IGCSE and AS examinations on the Daily Notice. Next week starts with 15 teaching days to go. Year 10 accelerated students, Year 11 and Year 12 are all working hard with their teachers to make sure they get the very best grades in May.

KS4/5 FOOTBALL VS UNIS

I recently had a meeting with a parent who is considering enrolling his son at our school. We talked about a lot of different aspects of school life but he was particularly interested to find out about how we teach our children and subsequently assess their learning. I was happy to talk to him about both

matters, because they are inextricably intertwined.

Good teaching, and consequently good learning, involves not just sharing new knowledge or skills, or helping children to gain new understanding. It also requires careful monitoring of how a child’s learning is progressing and identifying any gaps which s/he needs to fill in order to move forward in his/her learning. This does not necessarily mean formal ‘tests’, although some tests can provide a useful snapshot of a child’s attainment at a particular point in time. Teachers regularly and frequently monitor children’s learning through a range of different strategies including talking to children, asking questions, sitting alongside children while they are engaged in a task and marking work.

We use the outcomes of our fixed and ongoing assessments to track children’s progress over time and to set challenging yet achievable targets to help children extend and deepen their learning. One of the most

important things is to see that there is clear progress from month to month, term to term and from year to year, from whatever point that particular child has started at.

FINE DINING

Term 2 has been an extremely exciting term for Year 1. As the children become more confident in reading and writing they are able to apply these skills across the curriculum.

Participating in special whole school events has provided the children with excellent opportunities to extend their learning.

The most recent event was Science Day. The children were surprised to have the Year 5 teachers teach them for 2 periods! They enjoyed experimenting with and learning about gases. We heard all kinds of stories on our return about inflatable rubber gloves! The children particularly enjoyed a show by Dr. Froth the Bubble Man in the afternoon. Being exciting and motivated to learn is a great starting point.

Another exciting whole school event was International week. 1B enjoyed being visited by Ms Jinny who told them all about South Korea. They asked some excellent questions to further their knowledge whilst also developing their speaking and listening skills. The week culminated in a special assembly and international fair where the children performed very well.

The final whole school event was Road Safety week, when we took part in lots of activities to help us keep safe on the road. Have a look at all the posters that we made. By making them, we had a chance to work as a team, discuss and share ideas. Then we drew together, coloured together and applied our phonic knowledge to write sentences to encourage everybody to STOP-LISTEN-THINK before going across the road. Moreover, some groups made posters to remind people to wear their seat belts when we are in cars or on buses and also to wear a helmet when riding a bike.
