BRIAN KELLER wishes to convey his most sincere "thanks " to all his fri ends at the Club ., who joined force to ensure that his departure to America was marked by a farewell presentationo He was obviously delighted to r eceive a suitably inscribed tankard and a r are bottle of Scotch at his farewell "do" on 24th September o Incredible as it may seem

1 he was actually stuck for words! The presentation was our way

of thanking Brian for all he has done over the years for the Ramblers and particularly for the Rambling Section 1 which for a considerable . period was very weako The fact that this Section i s s trong now 1 is ·.; largely due ,tQ- his ef-fort s o So "thank you" Brian for bringing a H ttle bit o:f humour and ·a lot of common s ense to those General C6rnrnitte·e· Meetings .of · a couple of years ago ~ an<l also for helping to make the

.::~ambles, a$ '. popu.lar as . they are to-day o \. !e '11 be seeing you in a ~ year or.· so"'

On the date of July twenty-first. In order to work up a thirstt We went out with Mike,, For a ~ke up the Pike, Though the weather was looking its worst.

But then as we reached Dungeon .Ghyll> Our hearts b egan quickly,. to .thrill,. ·when Nike said "Look he:;re, There's ten 1J.inutes for beerf Before we start clinbing tJ;ie hilL 11

The B's were iopressed every one, As · the A's scrai.1bled upwards and on/ Till we reached a stone wall ,. Where we hid one arid. all · Until . the B party h.:-:,d. gone .

The ~ri.st thickly clouded the air, And '.'Wher'e are we?"- we cried, in despair. Mike said in reply · "We are now very nigh." Not helpful but true, . to be. fair.

We thought we were lost on the fellJ "But this is Stickle Pike I can tell." Then the A party cheered

As :Mike disappeared • He went quickly but ohl he went well.

Th~ route was the~ gravely discussed, For we thought that our linbs we Bight bust , "But if you foLlow me , You can run down the scree," So we did and got co~ered in dust.

In the valley the weather was fine , Though we couldn't enjoy the sunshine For they nade a great · fuss > About reaching the bus, As soon it would be opening time.

Now this you nay not think is true1

.And it did cause a drEY:.Ldful t.o-do, We passed the Bull's Head~-:But John said "Instead, We will stop at tho Old Boot and Shoo"•

On the coach we roturnecl with a song> Though the pub stop was not very long When our leader yom1g Nike .J

Six male ramblers ventured out on the morning of the 4th August from Skelhorne . .Street destined by ,.f?:us for Manchester Airport where we were . t6 d~part by a DC ~ lO aircraft for Ost end, Belgium . · : .. ,

Not being a great . lov er o f flying 1 • I c-o-uld 'nt help but feel apprehensive at the t hought of this journey, although after being airborne ~or some time my fear was promptly dispelled . I h oped, ne v.ertheless if you ever consider flying for .the fir st time, ·and yo.µ are a little sceptical, do take Dennis Crowley al"Ong with you; believe me you could'nt have a b <:3 tter moral support.

He is s o nonchalen t, what with the re.mark :of "Is that all -were get tin 1 ! " when th·e s"t ewardess brought a snack of coffee, and biscuits. How anyone 6an consider the intake oY- nourishment when you are 8000 plus feet above the clouds with air-pockets playing havoc with your stomach mystifies me, anyway Dennis if yo~ -~yer did feel a t winge of butterflies on that f light, ; would'nt in a month of Sundays have suspected ~ t.

. .

On a rrival at Ostend Airport we were met -by an attractive courier .. who·s name (coul d we ever .Jo!g_;e.t) was Yvonne, well a fter a guided tour which included a talk on the do' s and don't 8, we were shown ~u_.. <?-ccommbd.ation wh i ch was the Hotel Myra 7 a stones ·throw f?.V.Jay fr?m the harbour.

0

As the proverb goe s "its ;·t smal~ world" ., and it l) certainly ran g true to for m i n orl r hotel} fo r .no sooner had we arrived than our conversa · ~ ions we re punctuated with sentences such as "Oh you' re fro m Liverpo ol t .. oo , . what a (J coincidence" "I dont .. ~ive far· f ro m wher e · you live", nr•ve drank in that pub for ~ears''t not fo~getting . the . inevitable "My word your face looks f amiliar , its no t very often I cant place a face" , Anyway I dq u bt whethe:r Alan·. Joynson ever did find out where tha't .woman ··had · seen his face be fore .

The word 'gannets' was mentioned during one of our meals, well it seemed an appropriate description on numerous occasions as our m~als were devoured with such ravishness second hel.pingp b.eca:m·e . a foregone cone lusion for the waitress (could anyone in my pa:rty tell me just what was her name?

Breakfast consisted of bread rolls with glorified marg' and ma·rmalade wi·th jam, I doubt whether this was everyones iqyllic early·· morning 'get stuck in' breakfast by a long chalk.

Sleeping accommodation was'nt bad, although . t~e mattress could have been a wee bit m6re springy, I don't thin~ they had heard of posturised springing in our h6tel, for that .matter in B~lgium . .

Ostend itself is a rather "conseryative Blackpool" quote from Dennis, the most noticeable aspect _is the cleanli ness of the place. In fact every mornitig each shopkeeper has to hose down with water the pavement adjacent to his shop front, this is an everyday chore that is adhered to without question · Britain could take heed.

-Pharmaceutical items are · very expensive. I · found items such as .suntan lotion, · besides sunglasses, film .for cameras etc. way beyond the price you would pay for them ·back home, incidentally I purchased a common-garden toothbrush which :wou would acquire for the princely cost of 15p in Liverpool~ but to : .. my. astonishment I got conned to the tune of 70 francs (which works ·.o.ut at approximately 70 pence. in decimal) for this measly toothbrush professed to be made of genuine elephant hair, well for that money I would have enjoyed the experience of seeing the actual hair extracted from the elephant.

Even a hair comb you could buy for 6p here cost 30 . . , .... frac.s . (30 pence) ·in Ostend, it -really . is diabo~ical _.how meag e

items such as mentioned cqn cost the earth when you.go abroad, so the moral" of the s_tory" is when you holiday on for:-eign soil take an ample supply of toothbrushes, not f~rgetting: combs.

It was inevitable t hat whenever anyone was ·l-cit-e getting back 'to ·our co.ach it was invari~bJ.y .·s.omeo.n.e . f.r .o.rn ··o.:ur. :·party

. µnfortunately. ·

I rmmember one incident when Ritchie, Alan, Mike and I decjded to sights-see in Brussels, but the cardirial rule we forgot w~s to recall .where our coach was situated before setting out on our Jaunts roundthe city; well the inevitable happened -we got completely lost, and consequently we roamed becoming more frantic, unable .to find our bearings, nothing whatsoever looked familiar, l~~viig us wiih no hope of reaching our coach where everyone was waiting patiently for our return we assumed. P.T.O.

Page 14: Issue ov · resume command again. for another year as Chairmano ' · This :·was ~1el:j.. applauded, but we l ess active Members should l e·arn not to rely" heavily ; ~_on the goodwiJl

Hoping not to sound too . patronizing, ~ b~t a~ most r ·amblers know Ritchie has a e.apaci ty to speak 'French~ so it was he who took the initiativ~ in interc~pting a passer-by to q.sk the whereabouts of a certain cafe we had visited earlier, _well a'fter need l ess minutes. trying .t.o make the gentle man r ·espop.d .favourably to Richies 0-level Frenc.h, the man suddenly su~gest e d that if he preferred Richi~ could -converse in English with him, well what sighs of relief all round, eventually after thanking the ~loke for giving ussome viable advice on findin g our party, we followed Richie like the lost tribe of Israel.

Our ultimate goal was fulfilled after numerous detours around the common market capital , we arrived back at our coach to a rapturous handclapping from all who h~d passively waited for our return. f")

Well to bring· our Ostend holiday to a "favourable Q conclusion, I must say thank you all round to the lads, that includes RitchiE Cannon, Alan Joynson, Dave Holden, Dennis Growley not forgetting Mike Turner for making my week such a Q memorable one, and hoping next year another party of ramblers can participate in organising a similar _jaunt onto the Continent.
