Dear Families,
The term is quickly flying by and staff are busy writing reports for our
students as students reflect on their progress and activities they have
been involved in over the year. Our end of year reports will have a
general comment covering aspects of literacy, numeracy, social skills
and Science or HASS. Students in year 2, 4 and 6 will also have
comments from specialist teachers on the progress they have been
making over the 2 year cycle in their field.
The grades given to students are a summative grade of their whole
year of learning evidenced through classroom observations, writing
samples, tests, questions and class discussions and work samples.
Reports will go home with students on Wednesday 11th December,
week 9.
As the year comes to a close we have been planning and preparing
classes for next year, staffing and areas for improvement. Draft
budgets are being determined based on these needs. We have
reviewed our Site Improvement Plan and determined our goals and
actions for the coming 2 years. Our goals are to increase higher band
achievement in writing and to increase higher band achievement in
mathematics in all classes. Our challenges of practice and actions will
enable us to focus on improvement in learning though explicit
feedback to students and having students reflect on and determine
their next steps in their learning progression, utilising a range of
resources. Whilst we have our Site Improvement Plan with set goals we
also have a whole school focus on student well being and
engagement and determine actions for improvement. Building
student’s resilience, creativity, social skills and preparing them to be life
long learners. Thank you to the families who completed the school
survey as we have been able to reflect on this feedback and
incorporate new actions.
We are looking to our end of year events including the Christmas
Pageant, End of year concert and Year 7 Graduation.
We thank the Events and Fundraising Committee who continues to
work hard to raise funds for improvements to our facilities. $985 raised at school disco.
Another reminder that students are not to be on school grounds
unsupervised before 8.30 am in the morning and after 3.30pm in the
afternoon. Thank you for your cooperation with this.

Governing Council Report At the start of this term we celebrated the opening of the wonderful new nature play area.
Fundraising continues with the successful Redlegathon, Sports day cake stall plus other upcoming
events to fund the project. The next focus is the redevelopment of the planter boxes adjacent to
the nature play area and investigating more undercover seating. Governing Council applauds
the efforts of the Events and Fundraising Committee and the school community to make these
projects possible. This committee always welcomes more volunteers. Even if you can’t commit to
meetings, your help at individual events will be much appreciated.
The results of the NAPLAN testing have been released to schools. Governing Council is pleased to
see again that Norwood Primary School continues to perform very well both writing and
numeracy. Congratulations to the staff and students.
The Sports Committee reminds parents that they need to stay or arrange supervision of their
children at trainings and games. If a training/game ends early or is cancelled, parents need to
be responsible for their child rather than relying on the coach to stay and supervise the team.
The topic of increased Norwood Football Oval access continues to be on the Governing Council
agenda. Currently we are waiting for building works to finish but the school continues to develop
working relationships with the oval staff. The NPSP Council and Department of Education are
aware of our desires to have more Oval access.
Further information regarding the fees and charges poll:
Each year school fees comprise of the standard sum (for teaching and facilities) which is set by
the education department, and the prescribed sum (for materials and services) which is set by
governing council. Currently only the standard sum is legally recoverable, except for school card
holders.
On the recommendation of the school leadership, governing council proposes that both the
standard fee and the prescribed fee become legally recoverable for non-school card holder
families. As such the governing council is seeking parents to vote on this proposal.
Please note that the outcome of this poll will have no bearing on the fee that is charged for 2020
which is proposed to be $450 ($244 standard sum + $206 prescribed sum), an increase of $15
from 2019. This is in line with the school fees charged by other schools in the region. Aimee Patten on behalf of Governing Council
ICAS Results 2019 This year the ICAS testing through the University of NSW was very successful. This was the first time
the testing has been conducted completely online, resulting in easier access for families to results
and payments. The tests included Digital Technologies, Mathematics, English and Science.
71 Norwood Primary School students participated in the various tests and achieved the following
results:
Medal of Achievement – 1 Credits— 49
High Distinctions – 5 Merits— 22
Distinctions – 23 Participation— 104
We would like to acknowledge the outstanding achievement of Moeed A, who was awarded a
medal of achievement for the highest Digital Technology score in his age group in South
Australia and Northern Territory. Special mentions also go to the students who received high
distinctions:
English - Jennifer S and Hugo T
Mathematics - Nick P and Jason S
Digital Technologies - Moeed A

a text message is sent to your mobile phone.
How great is that!

Mayor’s 2019 Christmas Card Competition Winners
Congratulations to talented NPS students Jennifer, 1st Prize Winner for Year 3 and
Anashra, 3rd Prize winner for Year 3 in the Mayor’s 2019 Christmas Card Competition.
The judging panel was very impressed with ‘the striking pictures
capturing the spirit of the festive season’.
Beautiful job girls!
It’s beginning to look a lot like
Christmas……….
NPS, along with other local schools
are once again participating in the
Norwood Payneham St Peters
Council Christmas tree display on
Osmond Terrace.
Please take the opportunity to
come along and have a look at the
wonderful displays!
Did anyone recognise these two crazy clowns goofing around at the Christmas pageant held in the city recently? Hmmm….they do look kinda familiar….
Norwood’s Got Talent was a successful event hosted by the
Creativity and Diversity Team.
It was a fun and exciting experience for both the
participants and audience.
The acts were fantastic and there was lots of evidence of the time
and effort spent rehearsing. All of the auditions were wonderful,
however, there could only be 3 winners. Congratulations to all of the winners of 2019 Norwood’s Got Talent.
