evidence and justification for their application. These appli-cations are then screened to see if they meet a rigorous set of criteria, which, of course, includes outstanding attend-ance.

During the assembly, children from the Academy spoke to the school about their learning journey and gave some top tips to their peers about practice, perseverance and resilience. I look forward to seeing the ex-ceptional progress the children make over the year.

In line with our HPL philosophy this year, many of our Academy of Excellence opportunities will also be open to children within Year 5 and 6 who have shown a passion or interest in an area of learning, even if they are not in the Academy.

On Sunday, we also celebrated our first place win at the Abu Dhabi ‘A’ League swimming gala. This is a wonderful team achievement and is only pos-sible due to the children and staff’s hard work and devotion and parental support. Well done Swim Squad!

Morning Access to the S c h o o l

Please may I thank everyone for their support this week whist we have worked on dif-

ferent models of access and security in the mornings. The final solution we have decid-ed on is that, in the mornings, the side gate, Gate D, will be open for access only between 7.30-7.44am. The closure of the gate will be in line with the second bell of the morning.

If you are arriving at school after 7.44am, the only access points are Gate B and C.

Wearing Your Lanyards and Parent Pass

A huge ‘thank you‘to every-one who has remembered to wear their Parent Passes this week. These passes must be worn on entering and when in school. They show that you are a member of the school com-munity.

As you will have seen, the gates can become busy at the

beginning and end of the day so these passes are an addi-tional safety measure.

I am sure you will agree that this is a small inconvenience for the safety of 700 children.If you forget your Parent Pass, you may only enter school through Gate C where you will need to sign in and leave a piece of ID.

Traffic Congestion around Our School

As with many schools in Abu Dhabi and worldwide, traffic congestion around the school at the beginning and end of the day is tricky. As a school, we have limited ability to change this but of course never give up trying.

If you would like to be part of a group to look at the traffic issues, suggest some solutions and, if possible, meet with both the Department of Transport and the Police Traffic Depart-ment, please come to our Traf-fic Meeting in the Staffroom at 8am on Tuesday 8th October.

In the meantime to help the morning congestion why not …

• Leave home 5 minutes e a r l i e r

• Drop off older children and promote the independence of coming in to school on their own

• Encourage children to take responsibility for their own bags and belongingsBut above all, please promote road safety especially when crossing the roads or moving between cars.

Collection of Trip Money

Please may I remind all par-ents that, to help us, exact trip money must be sent in to your child’s class teacher along with the signed permission slip on or before the deadline.

Please only bring school fees to Shereen in the Finance Office.

Finally, it has been wonderful

seeing the children showing the HPL VAA – ‘Enquiring’ as I have been walking around the school. Our children strive to know more and ask questions about their learning to show depth and mastery, which is always outstanding.

Mental Health Awareness Week

I am so excited to announce that The Pearl Academy will be supporting Mental Health Awareness Week from 6 – 10 October 2019. The purpose will be to raise awareness and gain a better understanding about mental health and what we can do to keep ourselves mentally healthy.

What is Mental Health?The World Health Organization (WHO) defines it as follows:“…a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.” It is widely understood that positive health and wellbeing, including mental health, contribute to a child’s ability to flourish, thrive and achieve (Public Health England, 2014).

We will launch the week with an assembly on Sunday, a mental health focused lesson in class as well as an activity for all children.

All parents are invited to the Aldar Mental Health Parent Night being held at Al Yasmina on Tuesday 8th October at 6pm. This is a practical based workshop hosted by Aldar School Counsellors, parents can attend various stalls and learn new skills to promote their child’s physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. My focus and stall will be on providing a Men-tal Health Toolbox for students and parents. Please see flyer attached in the newsletter.

The Year 6s will be attending a presentation by Darkness into Light in the PE Hall on Wednesday. Laura Brennan, Maria Kelly and Sonia Gonzales will be our esteemed guests and presenters.

To conclude the week on a positive note, The Pearl Academy staff will be wearing green - to represent the green ribbon - on Thursday.

We will be sharing videos, photographs and quotes on our social media platforms with the hashtag #pearltalkoutloud and we encourage all our parents to join us in talking to your child about what is being discussed at school.

Children in Key stage 2 are in-vited to join the Royal Spelling Bee. This is a spelling compe-tition run by an external com-pany. The entrance fee is 80 dirhams per child. Upon reg-istration, children will receive a book of spellings that need to be learned at home. The first round of the competition will take place in school. The school winners have a chance to represent the school at an Emirate level competition and then a national competition. If you want to join the competi-tion, you can pick up a regis-tration letter from your teach-er. The deadline for payment and registration is 10th Octo-ber. On Wdnesday,Year 3 travelled back in time to become Egyp-tian explorers, archaeologists, scribes and robotic masters. This amazing Egyptian adven-ture helped support our unit of enquiry ‘Ancient Egypt - grue-some or great?’ A fantastic time was had by all.

Saanvi has completed Lev-el 1 in Robotics and won 3rd prize in the Robotics Competition at Time Mas-ter Skills Development Center. She built a robot using Lego blocks and wires including, remote functionality. There was a theory test on spelling and understanding concepts related to Robotics. Well done Saanvi.

It was a pleasure to super-vise the Horse Riding ECA at The Royal Stables this week.Children showed our values and attitudes - con-fidence, resilience and risk taking.

An enormous ‘Thank You’ to Civil Deference First Response, the Police and the Abu Dha-bi Fire Brigade who, today, helped with our evacuation drill. The children and staff demonstrated how sensibly and quickly they could evac-uate the building if there was ever a real emergency. A spe-cial ‘thank you’ must go to Mr Pollock who played the role of an unresponsive casualty dur-ing the evacuation. Children and parents will be happy to know he is safe and well.

Please take some time this weekend to talk to your chil-dren about evacuation routes from you homes so they are best prepared in case of a real emergency.

HOUSE POINTS OVERALL

On Sunday 29th September the Pearl Academy headed to Al Yasmina School to compete in their first swam gala of the year. The children were enthu-siastic, energetic and ready to try their best. We were one of the first schools to arrive, and after a quick warm up we started with the Medley Relays. This positive start seemed to motivate all our swimmers and we continued to place first, second and third throughout the gala. The team spirit and support was amazing, with all swimmers cheering each oth-

er on. We finished in 1st place out of 6 schools, with a total of 300 points – 30 points more than BSAK in 2nd place.We are very proud of all our swim-mers, but I would like to con-gratulate Mohammed Al Buhai-si (team captain) on his IM and 50 metres butterfly, Matteo Sopko for his IM, butterfly and backstroke, new addition Rana Elawady Y4 who swam the IM for Year 5, Adam Abrahim, Tori D’Silva for her performance in the IM and 50 metre butterfly, Kareem Al Rayaan for compet-ing in his first swim gala for the Pearl and finally Arabella Milne Hudson for her amazing 50 metres breaststroke. Now we are going to celebrate before we prepare for the next gala at Raha International School on Sunday 27th October. Thank you as always to all the chil-dren, the teachers who help out and the parents for their continued support.

This has been yet another ex-citing week for Nursery children in The Pearl. As our Nursery Rhymes topic draws to a close, this week we have been learn-ing about Incy Wincy Spider. The children loved doing the actions to the rhyme, singing the song, learning about differ-ent types of spiders and how they can be different colours and sizes, reading non-fiction picture books about bugs and creating different homes for the bugs. Our shared reading this week was ‘Brown Rabbit’s Shape Book’. The children enjoyed discussing all the shapes and the colours that came in Brown Rabbit’s box. We blew up some balloons, just like in the story, and we used a balloon to make a POP sound, which all the chil-dren loved! We explored all the different shapes that we could see in the story and the chil-dren were excited to investi-gate where these shapes could be found in the classroom.

We have had a lovely week in FS2 learning all about pat-terns. We have been singing patterns, making patterns, continuing patterns, painting patterns… patterns galore! We even found patterns on ani-mals and in songs. We have also found some superheroes around our school. We found that we have lots of people in school who have superpowers which help us. Why not ask your child who their superhero is?

A whole month has passed since the children began their Year 1 journey. The children have all began to become more independent by putting away their lunch boxes, read-ing bags and water bottles.

In English we have been:

• Continuing learning the story ‘Oh, swimming is lovely.’• Creating our own char-acters to write our own story. • Drawing story maps for the story. • Using construction ma-terials to make a home for the animals .• Acting out the story us-ing props and preforming it to the class.

In Mathematics we have been:

• Learning number bonds to 5, 10 and 20 using Numicon. • Creating a rainbow pic-ture by identifying number bonds to 10. • Matching the number word, numeral and Numicon up to 20. • Identifying number bonds by using Numicon in the w a t e r. • Rolling the dice and drawing by identifying the cor-rect number bonds to 10.

What a fantastic week we’ve had in Year 3, the highlight being our trip to Little World on Wednesday. The children worked exceptionally hard at being archeologists and it was lovely to see their confidence grow in the drama workshop.

THIS WEEK’S LEARNING

In English we:

• Worked on dictionary skills and how to improve our vo cabu l a r y.• Finished our adventure stories and began to edit and improve them using our purple polishing pens.

In Mathematics we:

• Revised our 2, 5 and 10 times tables and began to learn our 3s.• Worked on our column addition skills introducing car-ry ing.

In Science, we planned and carried out a fair test to see which material had the most friction. We used a range of materials from astro-turf to tin foil.

In English we will

• Write and edit our own adventure story using the toolkit.

In Mathematics we will

• Introduce column subtraction and continue to work on our times ta-bles and mental maths.

Please make sure your child is in the correct school uniform which includes black leather shoes, not trainers.Please make sure your child has their book bag with them on a Sunday to change home reading books.

As the children are now in KS2, we want to pro-mote independence and responsibility. As a result, children should not come to school in their uniform every day. They will now change into their PE and Swimming kits at the start of their PE and Swimming lesson.

Children must have a hat and a water bottle every day.

In English this week, we start-ed a new genre of writing – Fantasy World Stories. The children have been reading and learning their WAGOLL (What a Good One Looks Like) text: ‘Into the Unknown’. We secured our knowledge of the text by discussing its theme and structure and by identify-ing key features of the genre. We found that the story is full of fantasy creatures, made up settings and imaginary events. We recognised the structure of the story: beginning, build-up, problem, resolution and ending. In Mathematics, Year 4 have continued with our focus on multiplication. However, this time we have focused on men-tal methods for calculating multiplication sums, includ-ing multiplying 3 numbers to-gether and using partitioning to multiply two digits by one digit. We have used our knowl-edge of time times tables to calculate their inverse sum of division. By the end of the week, we were able to apply our learning in order to solve word problems.

In English, we started our new Talk for Writing unit based on imitation and identified the features of non-chronological reports.

In Mathematics, we will fo-cused on division and multipli-cation of 10, 100, 1000. The children also continued to de-velop their mastery, reasoning and understanding of multipli-cation and division.

In Science, we will be learned about the life cycle of a plant and compared it to that of a frog.

As part of our Topic learning we focused on aspects of Ma-yan lifestyle and culture.

It has been another busy week in Year 6. In science, all the children have enjoyed learn-ing about branching databas-es. The girls had the amazing opportunity to have a taster morning of secondary school life at A Mamoura Academy this week. They took part in a vari-ety of lessons. In Mathematics, they enjoyed learning about ‘algebra’ with skittles. They were exemplary role models and many positive comments were made regarding the man-ner in which they conducted themselves.

REMINDERS

On Tuesday 15th of Oc-tober, we will be holding a Greek Day to culminate our line of enquiry, ‘What did the Ancient Greeks bring to this World?’ The children will be required to come to school wearing a Greek-style costume. There will also be a Greek banquet. There will be a list of suggested food items in the central court-yard on the pillars where the children line up in the morning from Sunday 6th October. We ask that each child bring something with them to add to our Greek celebrations.

We are planning to launch homework on the portal (children’s) this week so please be aware it will not be on the padlet from now on.

Deadline for week 5 home-work is Sunday 6th Octo-ber 2019.

Awareness

‘Head... Shoulders… Knees and Toes’ Linking physical & emotional well-being to mental

health of young people Tuesday, October 8, 2019 from 6pm to 7pm

(Hosted by Aldar School Counsellors

and open to All Aldar Schools )

An evening filled with information and hands on activities that parents can utilise to promote physi-cal, emotional and mental wellbeing. Activities will cover primary and secondary students.

Examples of Activities:

1. Mindful colouring— Anxiety reducing benefits

2. Stress Reduction—Make and take stress balls and neck wraps

3. Mental Health Tool Box—Tool box kits with items student’s can use to relieve stress

4. Mindful Moments — Practical suggestions of various activities parent’s can adopt into their home routine

5. Nutritional food station and information
