· Well the golf course has been a hive of activity since the last newsletter.

· Despite the dreadful weather we have been able to complete the 2nd & 3rd hole program that was in association with the State Government. Personally I believe this a massive improvement and will be very interested in similar projects around our creek line boundaries.

· The garden coming off the 18th has been reworked with many people providing positive feedback.

· Trees have been removed from the carpark, from the first hole and from the 13th hole.

· The stockpile of rubbish on the right hand side of the 15th hole has been 50% removed. Once we have drier conditions this will be completed. By the way this will never happen again in such a visible and playable area.

· I have never been more eager for spring to start. Bring it on!

· On Clubhouse developments the exterior of the Club has now received a fresh coat of paint, the toilets have had a major renovation & the TAB has had a refurbishment as well. A big thankyou to the TAB for assisting us with $30,000 towards these Reno’s.

· Work has commenced on our major new fit out. This will feature an extension to the bar area that will allow for an additional bank of beer taps, an additional point of sale register and additional soft drink outlets. This will provide better service on busier days & nights.

· The bar will not only be extended but will have a major makeover. This should be a feature of our club.

· The Bellissimo’s ordering area will be relocated to in front of the Blackboard Menu Board. Operatable walls will be installed to provide privacy for numerous functions at the one time. New flooring around the traffic areas near the bar through to the gaming area. The dance floor is removed and new carpet tiles are laid throughout New furniture both inside and out.

· All weather sails will be installed outside for patrons wanting to enjoy views of our beautiful golf course.

· The interior wall around the spike bar will be removed, thus doubling the size of our capacity.

· A fresh lick of paint, some feature additions and a fireplace will see a brand new look come September.

· If I’ve forgotten anything I do apologise and if you have any questions please ask.

· We do intend to maximise patron comfort but there will be some minor inconvenience.

· Foxtel were here on the 22nd July filming their Golf Show featuring the” Stoney Creek 3 Ball Challenge”. Paul Gow hosted and played on the day as well. It is expected this will be aired on Wednesday, 19th August 15 on Foxtel at 7.30pm. Hopefully we can get some good national exposure.

From the Captain Hi The course staff have been very busy, preparing the course for the Cabra Cup, dealing with all types of weather conditions, pruning trees and just generally keeping the course in the best possible condition. The course work schedule which is posted near the competition kiosk is being achieved, with bunkers being repaired, drainage fixed. I look forward to the paths being repaired soon. Just a reminder—please leave rakes in the middle of the bunker facing the way the hole is placed. Congratulations to James Grierson on winning the Cabra Cup in a playoff against Chris Fan. James Grier-son also won the NSW Mixed Foursomes with a partner from Boonie Doon. Eric Apperly Pennants are now into the 4th game. The team has played well but have come up against strong opposition playing Bonnie Doon, NSW and Bankstown. I am sure the players have gained valuable experience which will assist with their future golfing ventures. The B & C Grade have started their pennants and should be a force to be reckoned with. Good Luck Guys. Next on the golfing calender is the Club Championships and I look forward to seeing you all out there giving it your best. If you see me around the course or clubhouse please come and have a chat.

Hi Members and Guests and welcome to our August Newsletter, This newsletter we are looking at ideas to quicken your round, with limited tee times and daylight hours. Remember you must report to the Proshop 12 minutes before your tee time. In doing this it enables us to print your scorecard, to organise swingers or even enable a player waiting for a game to be slotted in. Here are a few suggestions for how to do just that: 1. Be ready to play when it is your turn. While riding or walking to your ball, start preparing for your shot. Think of what club you’ll use. Imagine the shot. Look at your pin sheet. And on the green, read your putt (inconspicuously of course) while your playing partners are putting. This way you are always ready to play. 2. Marking your scorecard It may only take 30 seconds per hole to mark a card, but if you do it while standing on the green after you’ve putted out then you’ve added 9 minutes to the rounds of the golfers behind you. Wait until you’re on the next tee box and fill in the card while your playing partners are teeing off. 3. Think Ahead Park your buggy or bag on the side of the green closest to the next tee box, that way you don’t have to traverse the green twice after you’ve putted out. If you’re sharing a buggy be mindful of your partner’s situation; take him any clubs he may need to pre-empt an unnecessary round trip to the buggy and back. 4. Don’t take on the “Tips” Don’t let your ego choose who tees off first. Unless you’re a pro or a top amateur, the extra sheer length of the course from the Championship tees will add shots – and therefore time – to your round. Don’t let your pride get in the way, let the shortest hitters tee off first, and even on the fairways. You’re only going to frustrate yourself in attempting to hit it as far as the long hitters, and those behind you. 5. Play a Provisional If you’ve hit an errant tee shot and there is any chance that your ball may be lost or out of bounds then hit a provisional. It may mean an extra few seconds on the tee, but that’s far better than making the long walk back under the unappreciative gaze of the fourball behind you.

6. Ready? Go!

Ready golf is a system your fourball can employ to instantly speed up play. Basically, whoever is ready to play, plays. Yes, this flies in the face of some traditional etiquette (for instance, if John made a birdie on the first hole and Peter a bogey, customary rules dictate that John should tee off first on the second hole) but it’s just quicker and easier for all involved.

As you can see, you don’t have to start rushing your shots to improve your pace of play – in fact rushing will only be detrimental to your game. To play faster you merely have to play more efficiently.

Just a reminder the range is open for practice Friday afternoons. Purchase your range balls at the Pro Shop to enjoy this facility.

I would also like to thank all those members that have taken the time to settle their debts and clear their old accounts. Your patience and understanding whilst the Pro Shop staff have learnt our new system is greatly appreciated.

Sad news

John Wright has passed away. As a club professional, you get the great privilege of meeting a lot of good people and great characters (especially at Cabra), John was on top of that list of great characters, he had been a world champion speedway rider, nightclub owner, builder, golf teacher and a great story teller just to mention a few things. He had battled cancer twice and thought he had won but sadly it finally got the better of him.

We worked together for a number of years and he could tell life stories that would make your hair curl! I always likened him to a cat as he seemed to have lived 9 lives. Just to give you a small insight into his life I'll never forget the day I came to work and was talking to John about this documentary I'd watched on a massive volcano eruption in the Philippines years ago. It wiped out the US naval base which I think was the largest outside the US at the time.

He kind of gave me a cheeky smile. The next day he came in with some photos of him in a light plane going over the top of the volcano as it was erupting! He was working at or around the navy base at that time. Didn't surprise me!

He met his love Phuong and had a beautiful girl together, Jessica, I can tell you John’s spirit is alive in her. I can only write how sad I am for you both, but you can take comfort in the knowledge that you both were everything to him. He was always telling me stories of Jessie's triumphs. He passed on that twinkle in his eye to her that's for sure.

There was never a quiet moment when he was around, but when you've lived 9 lives like he did you've always got something interesting to say.

Will never forget you Wrighty. Now you can finally rest.

“What other people may find in poetry or art museums, I find in the flight of a good

drive. ~Arnold Palmer

News from the Green Staff

After a slow start to winter, with plenty of regular rain, we

have now experienced a long run of dry weather, 17 days

actually, and the course is in fairly good condition because

of that. We have managed to achieve quite a lot over the

past few months even with that early season rain. Tree

work was a high priority for us with the car park being

heavily pruned, both along the fence line and adjacent to

the 1st tee. Five large Eucalyptus were removed from the

rear of the 1st green. With all of the golf carts moving

along the path around that area, safety concerns were

raised in regards to large branches dropping, and it was

decided to remove those trees. This will also greatly

improve the 1st green and rear of the green with adequate sunlight now throughout that area.

The bunker at the 3rd green has now been renovated.

The bunker was shelled out, with the old sand being

used in the 10th fairway bunkers and the 3rd fairway

bunkers, making those more playable for the time

being. A new edge was cut around the bunker, new

drainage installed, geo fabric layed throughout the

base of the bunker to separate the clay base from the

white sand, and finally filled with new sand,

approximately 60 tonnes. Whilst running new

drainage, it was found that the old line didn’t link up

to any existing trunk drain, meaning that the water

would not run away. A new 100mm line was run across the 6th fairway to an existing stormwater pit, and

this can be utilised in the future for further drainage needs. Unfortunately we were held up towards the end

of the job with heavy rain, but that said I’m pleased with the result, and I look forward to playing from the

bunker in the near future. As we progress towards spring, we plan to continue to pruning and mulching

gardens and finish mulching the pile of branches at the rear of the Maintenance Facility which was delayed

due to the wet conditions. We also look forward to spring and good growing conditions, with renovations

planned for the end of August.

Once again the club achieved a good operating result with a net profit of $278,391.00, a marginal

decrease from last year.

On the representative scene the Mixed Pennant side made the final, however Fox Hills were to strong

in the final, winning 5 - 0. The Encourage shield teams both won their divisions, unfortunately they

lacked the experience in the semi final series, but gained valuable experience. The club competes in

the Mixed Pennants, B Grade Pennants, The Eric Apperly shield, Junior pennants, Encourage shield

and the Major pennants and for the first time Super seniors for the over 65’s. In the Majors we won

most individual games in our division but were not successful in winning the division Castle Hill beat

us by half a game. Denis Dale won the A.C.T. senior title in March. The juniors continue to shine

Kristian Bobanovic performed well in the ACT championships. Andreas Belkus, Tom Bicanic, Matt

A Scottish Jew

A Scottish Jew decided to retire and take up golf, so he applied for membership at

a local golf club.

About a week later he received a letter that his application has been rejected.

He went to the club to inquire as to why.

Secretary: You are aware that this is a Scottish golf club?

Scot: Aye, but I am as Scottish as you are, ma'am, my name is MacTavish.

Secretary: Do you know that on formal occasions we wear a kilt?

Scot: Aye, I do know, and I wear a kilt too.

Secretary: You are also aware, that we wear nothing under the kilt?

Scot: Aye, and neither do I.

Secretary: Are you also aware, that the members sit naked in the steam room?

Scot: Aye, I also do the same.

Secretary: But you are a Jew?

Scot: Aye, I be that.

Secretary: So, being Jewish, you are circumcised, is that correct?

Scot: Aye, I be that, too.

Secretary: I am terribly sorry, but the members just would not feel comfortable

sitting in the steam room with you, since your privates are different from theirs.

Scot: Ach, I know that you have to be a Protestant to march with the Orangemen.

And I know that you have to be a Catholic to join the Knights of Columbus.

But this is the first time I've heard that you have to be a complete prick to join a

golf club.

Frank

Frank always looked on the bright side.

He would constantly irritate his friends with his eternal optimism.

No matter how horrible the circumstance, he would always reply, "It could

have been worse."

To cure him of his annoying habit, his friends decided to invent a situation so

completely bad, so terrible, that even Frank could find no hope in it.

On the golf course one day, one of them said, "Frank, did you hear about

Tom?

He came home last night, found his wife in bed with another man, shot them

both and then turned the gun on himself!"

"That`s awful," said Frank, "But it could have been worse."

"How in the hell," asked his angry friend, "Could it have been worse?"

"Well," replied Frank, "If it had happened the night before, I`d be dead now!"

St Andrews

Four guys have been going on the same golfing trip to St Andrews for many years. Two days before the

group is to leave, Jack's wife puts her foot down and tells him he isn't going. Jack's mates are very upset

that he can't go, but what can they do.

Two days later, the three get to St Andrews only to find Jack sitting at the bar with four drinks set up!

"Wow, Jack, how long you been here, and how did you talk your misses into letting you go?"

"Well, I've been here since last night.

Yesterday evening, I was sitting in my living room chair and my wife came up behind me and put her

hands over my eyes and asked, 'Guess who?" I pulled her hands off, and there she was, wearing a nightie.

She took my hand and pulled me into our bedroom. The room had candles and rose petals all over. Well

she's been reading "50 Shades of Grey'......

On the bed she had handcuffs, and ropes! She told me to tie her up and cuff her to the bed, so I did.

And then she said, "Do whatever you want."

So--- Here I am!
