MESSAGE BOARD

29 September 2017

IN RECOGNITION OF GREATNESS OF SPIRIT SHOWN IN SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF ASIA

Ramon Magsaysay (1907-1957) was the third president of the Republic of the Philippines. His life had impact not only in his country but on many people in many lands. He was one of the outstanding leaders of his time.

Ramon Magsaysay commanded the admiration, respect and affection of people because he was a simple, humble man; because he cared for all people as individuals and believed in their dignity and importance; and because he had the courage of his convictions. His objectives was to improve the lot of his fellow Filipinos and he approached the task with selfless devotion. He was convinced that

government, to last and to be sound, must have integrity and reflect the will of the people.

A man of greatness of spirit, he saw his fellow human being born with the right to live in liberty and happiness. He angered at injustice and violation of high principles. He worked to build a nation-a world-in which were free and lived with honor and in peace with one another.

The world is richer and better because RamonMagsaysay lived. His spirit continues to be an inspiration. He exemplifies the highest type of leadership, and as such is a source of strength and confidence to people everywhere who are sincerely concerned about the well-being of their fellow citizens.

After Magsaysay’s death in an air crash in 1957, the RAMON MAGSAYSAY AWARD was established to give recognition to those ideals which distinguished his life and courageous service that he rendered to the people. The Award honors individuals and organizationswhose contributions have enhanced this creative tradition of transformative leadership and selfless service to the peoples of Asia.

Spanning more than five decades since the Award’s creation, 324 Ramon Magsaysay laureates have worked on a wide range of economic, social and political issues within changing historical contexts of their vastly different Asian societies. Yet, they all share one clear and defining characteristics: Magsaysay awardees have all been, and continue to be, successful builders of what Asia has become today.

The roster of Magsaysay awardees includes social, political, and moral leaders who have independence movement; established, restored, or strengthened democratic institution; and reformed inept government systems. Other awardees have modernized their post-war economies; preserved and promoted indigenous cultures; and pioneered in setting up basic human services programs in health, education, housing, and social welfare especially for the poor and marginalized.

As scientists and doctors many Magsaysay Awardees have revolutionized agricultural production; led breakthroughs in disease control, cancer treatment; pioneered improvements in promoting maternal healthand child survival. As public intellectuals, other awardees have shaped public policy and discourage towards environmental protection, promoting human

rights, religious tolerance, the empowerment of women, and participative development. Still others have worked tirelessly and against great odds to save lives at risk from social stigma, uncontrolled pandemics, protracted government neglect and unabated corruption, civil wars, pervasive ignorance, and the abuse of shared natural resources like water and forests and air.

There are also Magsaysay awardees who, by the power of their pen or their artistic works, have awakened the science of their societies to address urgent social ills.

All these transformative solutions of the Magsaysay laurates have helped to build an Asia that stronger than it was when the Rockefeller Brothers Fund (RBF) initiated the Magsaysay Award in 1957. While Asia is now at the forefront of global growth, many of its teeming millions continue to confront seemingly intractable poverty, stark inequities, and an increasingly threatened natural environment.

Since 2011, the impact of the Magsaysay Award has expanded, through the creation of the RAMON MAGSAYSAY TRANSFORMATIVE LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE (RMTLI). The Institute is a unique enterprise that systematically connects Magsaysay laureates and their leadership contributions to other leader Asia-and beyond-bringing together both their shared passions and their successful, inclusive solutions in ways that will better address the region’s age-old problems, as well as the challenges spawned by Asia’s economic progress itself.
