PERFORMING&VISUALARTSDEPARTMENTDanceAchievementsRecently two of our high performing dance students have been very successful in their endeavours. Baedyn McClelland (Year12) is an outstanding performer. Baedyn successfully audi oned in Brisbane for Crea ve Genera on 2013. Baedyn was selected as a featured dancer
for the CGen Dance Company. To do this he had to audi on against hundreds of other talented students from around the state. Baedyn was also successful in audi oning for the Raw Tap Team. Heis only one of 20 students in the state who will be working with the Raw Tap Company. This is a fantas c opportunity for Baedyn as he will be working with, and learning from, dance professionals.
Geraldine Petersen (Year10) is a fantas c performer in dance. Geraldine successfully audi oned at the McDonald College in Sydney. The McDonald College is a specialist school in the performing arts. For example, from year 7 onwards students can specialise in Classical Ballet, Ac ng, Dance, Music or Musical Theatre. Should Geraldine accept the offer she will need to move to Sydney and repeat a year of school. Congratula ons Baedyn and Geraldine!

MusicStudiesSenior Music Studies students now have opportunity to record their music at school. In this class students are able to develop their skills in music through prac ce and rehearsals. New sound recording technology, microphones and equipment now make it possible for students to perform live and record. Many thanks to Mr Kelsey Allen and Mr Trevor Sco for making this happen for our students.
InstrumentalBandCampAt the end of term one our Instrumental Music students were a part of a very successful Instrumental Music Camp at Tully State High School. 96 students, from grade 5 to grade 12, a ended from all over the region and travelled from Dimbulah, Mareeba, Atherton, Malanda, Ravenshoe, Innisfail and Tully to be part of a fantas c three day camp.
Students had the pleasure of working with numerous, talented instrumental teachers and learning new music. Sec onals were divided into two large bands, a strings ensemble and there was also a mass choir. Some of the other ac vi es on camp included sport, swimming, games, and a talent night. The camp culminated in a public performance for the Tully community.
I would especially like to thank Ms Kristy Braes and Mrs Kirsten Towne for all their wonderful work on camp and suppor ng our instrumental music students. Well done everyone!

On another note, you or your child may receive a postcard for posi ve behaviour at school. It is one part of the School-Wide Posi ve Behaviour Support (SWPBS) program. SWPBS provides mul ple layers of support for your child to keep them happy and safe at school. It also explicitly teaches our young people how to behave appropriately in a range of school and social situa ons.

regarding changes to the dates that
the following Public Holidays are
observed.
The Labour day holiday has been
moved from May to October. On
Tuesday, 30th October 2012,
amendments to the Holidays Act
1983 were passed by Parliament
prescribing that from 2013, The
Birthday of the Sovereign (Queen’s
Birthday) public holiday is to be
observed on the second Monday in
June (10th June 2013) and The
Labour Day public holiday is to be
observed on the first Monday in
October (7th October 2013).

2013CAMBODIACULTURALEXPERIENCEDuring the Easter School Holidays seven of our Year 12 students, along with Mrs Daly, Mr Ralph and a parent, Mrs Sexton, travelled to Siem Reap Cambodia to volunteer at the New Hope Cambodia School. Not only were we fortunate enough to teach English to the students at the New Hope Cambodia School, but we also got to visit these children and their families in their villages. The school children were a delight and our students bonded with them immediately.
As well, we had me to visit Angkor Wat and other temples of Siem Reap, the killing caves, war museum, silk farm, and the many markets. We ate many of the local foods and were entertained by tradi onal Apsara dancing.
The whole experience was life changing for all of us and we would like to thank everyone who donated gi s, sta onery or clothing to take with us. We would also like to thank the many generous people who donated enough money to allow us to donate 33 bikes
Our students, Rikki Olufson, Thomas Heta, Jessica Sexton, Cur s Midgley, Brendan Price, Denise Saunders and Cassidy-Rae Givney were excellent ambassadors for Mareeba State High School. We would like to thank them for being so amaz-ing and for helping to make this an experience of a life me.
