CRAT - Pipe Wrapping at PTT Asahi Chemical CRAT Delivers Scaffolding Project at PTTEP

3

Towards the end of last year, PTT Asahi contacted CRAT to help them prevent leakage from two large process lines; the largest of which was 80 inches in diameter.

Inspection of the lines had found the thickness of the pipe walls to be 80% less than their original condition and well under the recommended standard for safe operation. The client wanted CRAT to wrap the lines to enable them to reach their next planned shutdown without having to stop production.

CRAT, along with our technology partner, Ecoforce, rapidly deployed resources and materials to wrap the lines using our Diamond pipe wrapping solution to prevent any leaks and keep the plant online.

CRAT was proud that the job went well and without incident and the client was particularly pleased they could continue operating until the next planned shutdown, where they can arrange for the wrapped sections of pipe to be replaced.

Thanaphol DinprangSenior Leak Sealing SupervisorCR Asia Thailand

In March, CRAT was awarded a project by PTTEP to erect 21,000 cubic metres of scaffolding for a shutdown of one of their process facilities and provide access to a number of vessels, drums and columns.

CRAT mobilized an experienced team and successfully completed the project ahead of schedule and without incident.

CRAT expects this business will help secure future scaffolding projects, both onshore and offshore, especially as CRAT has made recent investments in additional scaffolding materials to support upcoming demand.

In January, CRAT was engaged by the main utility supplier to Suvarnabhumi Airport (the main international airport in Bangkok) to stop leaks from a steam trap and bonnet valve in a 12 inch steam line. The steam pressure was 20 barg and temperature 250 degC.

CRAT successful performed the job safely and to the full satisfaction of the client.

In the near future, CRAT expects to be called upon to provide pipe wrapping services for the same client to protect a length of pipe against corrosion.

Sorasak DinprangSpecial Services DivisionCR Asia Thailand

CRAT was engaged by CUEL for an urgent job to perform surface milling of structural beams prior to the installation of several large and heavy compressors.

This was a very challenging job, as it was important for the compressors to be aligned correctly to meet the end user’s strict requirements and specifications.

CRAT quickly mobilized skilled resources and mobile milling equipment to CUEL’s yard to complete the milling, in 28 discrete locations, to ensure the compressors could be installed without delay.

The work was executed safely, efficiently and without incident and the client was very satisfied with CRAT’s performance and quick response.

CRAI – Exchanger Overhaul at HPCL

Members of the CRAI torqueing team supporting the Comprehensive Maintenance Contract for Reliance at Jamnagar excelled during a recent breakdown of a hydraulic pump, saving significant time and costs compared to using the OEM.

On hearing unhealthy noises coming from the pump during operation, the torqueing team requested the OEM to check the machine, who advised the pump needed to be replaced.

This prompted the CRAI Planner and torqueing Lead Supervisor to approach the problem in a different way.

The torqueing team stripped the pump down, identified the problem and the components that needed replacing and asked CMC procurement to source the parts locally.

The team reassembled the pump with the new items in place and started it up. The pump fired up immediately and is still running strong some 3 months later.

Well done to all who supported and carried out this job and for the initiative shown in getting the pump back online quickly and efficiently.

CRAI completed an EO tubular reactor replacement job for Reliance (RIL) at Hazira.

The job involved the tubular reactors at the MEG 1 and 2 plants, which comprised around 8,000 and 4,500 tubes respectively and was successfully completed well ahead of schedule.

Early and thorough planning combined with a skilled team, collaborative client and deployment of innovative techniques including suction manifold, mini-cyclone hopper for outage correction and screening machine with de-dusting facility led to a very successful outcome.

The project was ably supported by TubeMaster who supervised the pressure drop measurements and swab blowing.

On the basis of this and previous successes, RIL, being India’s largest refinery and petrochemical producer, seems keen to use CRAI for their next tubular reactor job.

CRAI - Comprehensive Maintenance Contract Update

There has been good progress on the Comprehensive Maintenance Contract (CMC) at Reliance in Jamnagar since the last Newsletter went to press.

All 15 plants plus workshop have been taken over and a far greater level of stability is now evident.

Two of the plants are away from the main site at the Jetty and Marine Tank Farm respectively and means we are supporting the ship offloading and loading activities that keep the refinery ticking over.

We have added insulation services to our scope now and have carried out our first jobs successfully.

Total manpower has increased due to a number of one-time-project jobs and is just under 1,500. We have completed several shutdowns including the Diesel Hydrotreater, Sulphur Plant and 3 Hydrogen Plants. Coming up are another Diesel Hydrotreater, VGO Plant and a 2nd Sulphur Plant, where we will be removing several condensers for a full re-tube by our bundle re-tubing team.

11

In January, CRAT used their catalyst robot to unload adsorbent from a Chloride treater at HMC in Thailand.

The first test project for the catalyst robot was at PTT Gas Separation Plant in December to unload activated carbon form a small reactor and with this learning CRAT has now advanced to full commercialization of this new technology.

The new robot has outperformed our expectations and both jobs were completed successfully and without incident.

The robot unloading is equivalent to having a BA Technician enter the reactor (confined space) and unload the reactor’s contents under inert conditions.

Obviously, using the robot is much safer as it practically eliminates man-entry and, in addition, reduces downtime as work can start earlier if the reactor is hotter than a person can tolerate.

The HMC project progressed ahead of schedule, which was greatly appreciated by the client and CRAT was complimented for the additional safety precautions taken by not putting their people at risk inside the reactor.

Once again, CR Asia is leading the way at introducing automated technology to improve work place safety and efficiency and be best-in-class.

CRAS has recently taken delivery of their newly purchased hydraulic drum tipper, which can automatically empty the contents of up to 4 drums into a receiving hopper.

The main benefits of the drum tipper are that it eliminates manual handling of drums and speeds up the drum unloading process by 20-30% over conventional manual handling.

With this new innovation, CRAS is excited to deliver a safer and more efficient service to their clients and, at the same time, lead the way forward with the latest and safest technology.

CRAI – Mounting of Heavy Tensioning Tools

12

CRAI has developed a special fitting for mounting the extremely heavy tensioning tools required for working on ammonia converters.

The device consists of a four arm fixture fabricated to the exact size of the converter top cover, which can lift all of the four tensioning tools simultaneously and significantly reduces the time and effort compared to conventional methods.

Previously, winches or cranes were used to lift one tool at a time.

Jagajjeevan ShettyOperations ManagerCR Asia India

CRAI has implemented automated knife gate valves for their cyclone hoppers during catalyst replacement in tubular reactors, which has proven to be extremely successful.

The automated knife gate valves are much safer and require significantly less manpower compared to conventional methods, which are far more manually intensive for unloading catalyst from cyclone hoppers.
