The Group PerspectiveAs expected, 2017 has seen a significant increase in work across the Group.

Thailand has been busy with a number of significant shutdowns including IRPC, BST, DOW and ROC whilst Singapore has been very busy completing a number of significant catalyst handling projects for Shell Seraya, Shell Bukom and ExxonMobil along with a number of chemical cleaning and CDT projects. India has also been busy with

many catalyst handling jobs and CDT jobs along with the ongoing mobilisation of the Reliance CMC contract and the large HMEL shutdown.

We are particularly pleased with the large number of letters of commendation received from clients in 2017 reflecting the strong ongoing commitment to excellence of our technicians, supervisors and project managers.

The oil price continues to impact our business resulting in increased levels of competition and reduced margins in most of our markets. Our Singapore and Malaysia based businesses have merged as a result of the impact of the global oil price on the Malaysian market. The management team is developing a new business plan to set the strategic direction for the Group to 2020.

We continue to maintain high levels of client satisfaction and low levels of employee turnover in 2017.

The extension of our yard facilities in CRAT is coming to the final stage whilst our new Jamnagar workshop remains in the planning stage due to other commitments in India.

On behalf of the CR Asia Board of Directors, I want to thank you all for your commitment to the company and stress that, as always, safety remains our highest priority and we expect all our team to make a personal commitment to our Zero Harm safety program.

CRAT Introduces Projectile Technology

CRAT took the opportunity to test a new type of cleaning method using projectiles at BST’s turnaround last November 2016.

Projectile technology is a low pressure cleaning technique that has been mainly used in the Power sector to date for cleaning condensers.

During the BST turnaround, CRAT used projectiles to clean some of the most challenging in-situ condensers and heat exchangers.

CRAT cleaned around 15,000 tubes with this new technique at a rate of 500 tubes per hour and only a minor percentage of the inspected tubes failed the IRIS inspection.

The normal operating pressure of the projectile pump is 350-400 psi (25-30 bar) and a typical flow rate is 140 litres per minute.

CRAT noticed that the Projectile system is most efficient for re-cleaning heat exchangers that have initially failed the inspection or for cleaning lightly fouled tubes.

Blocked tubes and heavily fouled tubes are still best cleaned by High Pressure Water Jetting (HPWJ).

CRAT Hosts Lunch n Learn for New Anti-Corrosion Solution

In September 2016, CRAT organized a Lunch n Learn event at Sak Saitarn Resort in Rayong for Nitto to demonstrate their new anti-corrosion solution, which uses tape rather than the conventional method of painting.

Nitto claim that the tape lasts for at least 15 years (compared to around 5 years for paint), is significantly faster to apply and is substantially more economical as a result.

CRAT invited clients from various sectors including Power, Oil & Gas and Petrochemicals to participate in the event.

More than 50 clients attended and a good deal of interest was raised in this new anti-corrosion solution.

In December 2016, CR Asia announced the merger of CRAM and CRAS to create a larger and more diverse business that will be capable of achieving higher levels of productivity through greater economies of scale.

The new business will be managed by Edwina Wong (pictured) and this change was deemed necessary to combat increasingly difficult market conditions, particularly in Malaysia, to enable the combined business to be more effective and efficient going forward.

CRAM will be retaining its operational base in Kemaman and, in addition to its on-going hydro-jetting, vacuum truck and catalyst services, will be able to offer a much more diverse range of mechanical and shutdown / turnaround maintenance services with support from CRAS.

David YoungGroup Business Development ManagerCR Asia Group

CRAM Merging with CRAS

In October 2016, CRAI was awarded its largest project ever – a five year mechanical maintenance contract for Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) in Jamnagar at the world’s largest Refinery and Petrochemical Complex.

CRAI took on the first 2 units, the Crude Unit consisting of 2 plants and the Hydrotreater Unit comprising 5 plants. During the preparation phase, CRAI recruited over 200 management, supervision and plant maintenance personnel and procured significant quantities of tools and equipment.

CRAI’s planners and engineers worked closely with RIL to identify and schedule all tasks into a meaningful plan so the utilization of personnel could be maximised, whilst also learning about the particular challenges each unit brings. There have been several “mini” shutdowns where resources from different plants have needed to be pooled together in order to successfully complete work scopes at relatively short notice.

In 2017, CRAI took over 2 more units, Sulphur Unit and Aromatics Unit, with a further 10 units due to be taken up by the middle of the year. This is no small task considering that the overall numbers needed to service this contract will run to almost 1,000 people eventually.

Both the transition and delivery teams have been working extremely hard to deliver this game changing opportunity for the business, with support from management within the Group. In particular, CRAI would like to thank Mark Stansfield (Group Managing Director) and Gunavel Rathinam (General Manager, CR Asia India), who have spent a great deal of time working with the teams to achieve the progress to date.

CR Asia Board of Directors Meeting in Thailand

CR Asia held their #40 Board Meeting in Thailand on 15-16 November 2016, the first day of which happened to coincide with Mark Stansfield’s birthday (Group Managing Director). The Board members were able to see first-hand the current state of the expansion work underway for the CRAT site in Rayong, Thailand.

CRAT is in the process of expanding its operations in Rayong, close to the country’s main refining, petrochemical, and oil & gas centre.

The expansion will add a further 12,000 square metres to the existing 22,000 square metre site, where two new workshops have been built, one of which covers 2,000 square metres and is equipped with a five-tonne overhead crane and a second 1,000 square metre workshop. A new training facility in the form of a mini processing plant complete with heat exchangers, vessels, tanks, piping etc., is also being added, which will enable CRAT to carry out demonstrations for clients and will assist with the training of CR Asia personnel.

In addition, CRAT is adding a new 800 square metre administrative building, along with making improvements to the existing facilities, including a new road system and improved drainage in order to better handle the rainy season.

This work has been ongoing for several months and should be completed by the middle of 2017.

CRAT has also invested heavily in new automated equipment over the last few years, spending more than SGD 6.5 million (US$4.8 million) in 2014 and over SGD 7 million (US$5.17 million) in 2015 in order to boost operational efficiency and make operations safer for clients and employees.

CR Asia Innovation – Loading of Support Ceramics

The loading of ceramic support balls in a reactor is a time consuming and labour intensive practice. The ceramic balls are commonly loaded using buckets or sacks due to difficulties accessing the bottom of the reactor.

CR Asia has designed a split vacuum cyclone made of lightweight materials to enable the ceramic balls to be transferred pneumatically from a loading bin to the cyclone and into the reactor without causing the ceramics to break. A loading hopper is strategically positioned to ensure the fall height is within acceptable limits.

The loading rate achieved with this technique is much faster than using buckets or sacks and the loading time is reduced by at least 67% when compared to these conventional methods.

The design of this equipment has been rolled out across CR Asia to make loading schedules even quicker than before and ensure the loaded reactors can be put back in service sooner, creating more value for the end user.

Oliver RooneyEquipment & Procurement ManagerCR Asia Group

CR Asia Innovation - Improving Safety of HPWJ Operations

The manual foot valve used for operating a High Pressure Water Jet (HPWJ) lance is bulky and often a nuisance as it needs to be close to where the technician is standing. This typically means the high pressure hoses are near to the technician’s feet, creating a tripping hazard and exposing the technician to the potential of a serious injury if a hose was to rupture or burst.

Replacing the manual foot device with an air controlled dump valve removes the technician from the hazardous area by allowing the valve to be located near to the operating equipment and not where the technician is standing. The air controlled valve is easy to set up and safer to operate. The hose arrangement is simplified too, further reducing hazards and the need to provide sock protection for the hose is eliminated.

The enhanced level of safety offered by this innovation is important to our ongoing business improvement and CR Asia is going through a process of replacing all foot valves with air controlled dump values in a systematic manner.

Message from CR Asia Group Safety Manager

2017 has started well with a good number of projects across all of the businesses including large turnarounds, term maintenance contracts and many other smaller jobs. Many of these projects have had tight schedules associated with them and several have required large volumes of permanent and contract staff on the ground.

As always, safety is our top priority!

Safety training and skills specific training are key to ensuring that all of our personnel have access to the latest in safety awareness and trade skills. A great deal of effort and commitment is made by many people within the CR Asia organisation to design and deliver training. Their efforts should be applauded and recognised as making a vital contribution towards maintaining a safe working environment for all.

As we remain determined to create a “Zero Harm” work place across our geographically and culturally diverse areas of operation, we must emphasise to all of our staff that it is your responsibility, to yourselves and to your work colleagues, to continually look out for each other and to report any unsafe acts or non-conformances immediately. Also, remember that anyone has the authority to stop work, if they feel that it is unsafe to continue.

Some commendable safety achievements were recorded in 2016. However, as always, there is room for improvement. Let’s all make a renewed and concerted effort to continue our quest for “Zero Harm” for all CR Asia personnel throughout 2017 and beyond.

Work hard, play hard and above all, stay safe.

Pete CheshireGroup Safety ManagerCR Asia Group

Training & Development

The Training and Development Department (TDD) has been busy training workers for various projects in Thailand, India and Singapore in recent months. The training courses provided have covered a range of disciplines including High Pressure Water Jetting (HPWJ), confined space entry and inert entry Breathing Apparatus (BA).

TDD was invited to present an overview of its BA course for inert entry to representatives from IRPC. This opportunity allowed TDD to show IRPC some of the information and training that is required for every inert entry reactor specialist that performs this role at CRAT.

The overview included a demonstration on how to use the BA, how the system works, what procedures are in place and the safety backups in case something goes wrong.

As a result, IRPC went away with a greater awareness of the BA equipment and how it is used along with an appreciation that CR Asia has the necessary tools and capabilities to complete inert entry jobs safely and professionally.

It is always good to work with clients to help achieve a better understanding of the knowledge, skills and experience required for certain tasks and to be able to promote safe working practices.

CRAS Celebrates Lunar New Year

The Year of the Rooster is here!

CRAS celebrated the Lunar New Year in early February 2017. This day also happens to be “Everyone’s Birthday” in the Lunar Calendar.

All staff enjoyed a traditional “Lo Hei” lunch, which means “tossing up good fortune” and refers to the ritual of tossing the Yu Sheng (Cantonese-style raw fish salad) and saying of auspicious phrases before eating it.

A staff member on each table prepared the Yu Sheng by adding the ingredients one by one in a specific order, whilst reciting wishes of luck and prosperity. With the plate in the middle, all staff stood in a circle and tossed the ingredients whilst exchanging good wishes.

CRAS was encouraged by the belief, that the higher the toss, the better your prospects for the year ahead and cries of HUAT! HUAT! HUAT! (HUAT means to prosper) rang around the room.
