Principal’s Report

Student Achievement: Reading

At McGuire College we are extremely proud of the achievement of our students in a whole range of subjects and endeavours but have recently been able to celebrate the achievements of our students in relation to their achievements in the National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). One of the key measures for any school is the growth of student learning over time and NAPLAN provides us with an ideal measurement tool for student learning between Year 7 and Year 9. One of our goals over the last two years has been to increase the number of students that demonstrate a high level of growth between their NAPLAN results in Year 7 and their second sitting of NAPLAN in Year 9. At the same time we have been endeavouring to decrease the number of students that demonstrate a low growth rate between these two assessments. I am delighted to report that we have meet this goal in Reading for the last two years and in fact achieved stronger “high growth” rates than the State Average and smaller “low growth” rates than the State average. Our students should be really proud of their achievements and the work they have done to make this goal of the College a reality. Our achievements and those of our students in this space has been possible due to an unrelenting focus over time on developing all students as readers and all teachers, as teachers of literacy. Our work has been focused over the last two years around our partnership with the University of Melbourne, via the Network of Schools, and a specific focus on building our practise around independent reading, vocabulary and comprehension. Congratulations are extended to our UMNOS Success Coordinators, Stacie Lundberg and Jamason Lopez, on their outstanding presentation of our reading capacity building work at the latest UMNOS seminar in early September. Student Engagement: Athletics

Well done to all the students who attended our Athletics Day on Monday 4th September and put in a big effort to ‘have a go’ at the different events that were on offer. Despite the wind and the cold our students all had an opportunity to actively participate in various athletics events. Our staff have been full of praise for the level of participation and behaviour of our students in such trying conditions. A big thank you to the staff for their hard work on the day, for our parents/carers for coming along and supporting your children and to our students who were once again wonderful ambassadors for themselves, their families and our College.

College Development

The College has a number of facility development projects currently underway, with the most recent being the commencement of works on our new netball and basketball courts. The excavator has been in over the last week preparing the new site, adjacent to the Wilmot Road Primary School oval. If the weather is kind to us, we look forward to students, staff and the community being able to access these new facilities in mid-November. I must also extend thanks to our staff team, ably lead by Trevor Wilson, who have been preparing the majority of F Block for demolition. A large number of classrooms and staff offices have now been moved and we are just awaiting the finalisation of tenders before moving to demolition of F Block, creation of a new Food Technology Room and roof replacement on A and B Blocks. Staff Development

Our staff team spent Wednesday 6th September working on building their capacity around creating a positive College climate with a specific focus on student and classroom engagement strategies. Staff revisited our approach to our School Wide Positive Behaviour Support system and how our College Values support staff to develop expectations, reinforce student positive behaviours and to manage students who are not meeting the required expectations here at McGuire College. Thank you to the large team of staff presenters on the day who engaged and inspired our team to commitment to a consistent, student focused approach to building a positive College climate for students and staff.

Attendance

Our attendance rates have taken a dip over the last reporting period, 21st August to 5th September, largely due to a huge number of students suffering the winter colds and flu’s. We hope the last two weeks of Term 3 sees our students all striving to achieve an attendance rate above 90%. Once again, we must congratulate our Year 12’s on their fantastic attendance record over this period of time.

College Hats

It is time to start searching for the hats in the back of your wardrobes. Students are required to wear hats when outdoors in Term 4. If your son or daughter does not have a McGuire College hat, please drop by the office to purchase one for $11.00.

Kind regards Brad Moyle Principal

Year 9 Outdoor Ed Camp Last Thursday the Year 9 Outdoor Education class ventured up to Mt Buller for a day filled with downhill skiing and snow activities. After an early start we made our way to the top of the mountain and from 10-11:30 all students participated in a lesson about the skills needed to successfully downhill ski. When the lesson finished the students split into groups with some of the stronger skiers tackling the ABOM express and others enjoying the village and fantastic cover of snow. All of the students had a real crack at learning the skills and should be proud of their efforts.
