Dear Neighbor, While the National YoungArts Foundation has been in Miami for over 30 years, we're relatively new to this part of the neighborhood, and we wanted to take a moment to introduce who we are, what we do and why we do it - and invite you to be a part of it all. YoungArts was founded by the wonderful Ted and Lin Arison in an effort to support and encourage the next generation of artists in America to pursue a career in the arts, and to help keep the arts alive and prospering in our nation. Since 1981, YoungArts has identified and supported the nation's most talented young artists in ten different artistic fields with over $6 million in monetary awards, and helped them receive scholarships from some of the nation's top schools, including The Juilliard School, Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), New England Conservatory of Music, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD).

In addition, we have enabled YoungArts participants to work with some of the most distinguished artists in the world, such as Mikhail Baryshnikov, Plácido Domingo, Rosie Perez, Martin Scorsese, Robert Redford, Marisa Tomei, Kathleen Turner and Bruce Weber. We also have a network of 20,000-plus alumni, including Josh Groban, Kerry Washington, Nicki Minaj, Jenji Kohan, Viola Davis, and Miamians such as So You Think You Can Dance Season 11 Winner Ricky Ubeda, visual artist Daniel Arsham and playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney. Recently, we moved our operations to our current home at 2100 Biscayne Boulevard (the former Bacardi Tower & Museum). Since our move in October 2012, we have been busy working with renowned architect Frank Gehry to update and transform the 3.5-acre campus. We have re-designed the Tower building's interior, which now houses a two-story gallery, and on the 7th floor we are opening Ted's at YoungArts, an intimate lounge & restaurant, which will be featuring live performances several nights a week (more in the column to the right). Upcoming plans for the campus include a new performing arts center and park with state-of-the-art sound and video capabilities. We have also begun to host year-round events on the campus, including public screenings and performances, classes, and visual arts exhibitions in partnership with museums based in Miami, New York, Los Angeles and elsewhere. And we want you to know that you're invited, and welcome you in our new home.

Ted's at YoungArts

We are proud to announce, in partnership with Stephen Starr Events (SSE), the launch of Ted's at YoungArts (Ted's), an intimate cultural lounge and eatery located on the 7th Floor of our Tower Building. Named in honor of our co-founder and philanthropist, Ted Arison, Ted's will open Wed. December 17, 2014.

We hope you'll join us, and we look forward to sharing more Ted's developments soon! In the meantime, you can read more

Since opening the campus to the public in November 2013, we have held discussions with performance artist Marina Abramović, dancer & choreographer Justin Peck & singer Sufjan Stevens, violinist Joshua Bell, and singer-songwriter Ben Folds; hosted visual artist Olafur Eliasson and his Little Sun installation in partnership with MoMA PS1; held classes for local music students with jazz icon Wynton Marsalis; produced a

performance featuring Robert Redford, Living Colour's Will Calhoun, and YoungArts alumni cellist Dave Eggar and dancer and choreographer Desmond Richardson; and premiered HBO's Joshua Bell: YoungArts MasterClass.

We are thrilled to be a part of this electric and arts-centered neighborhood and to finally have a permanent home where our alumni and other world-class artists can work and perform for the South Florida community. And, thanks to a grant from ArtPlace America - a national consortium that funds significant arts and culture projects that are used to shape the communities we live in - we plan on creating even more free public programming for you to enjoy, engage in, and be inspired by. One of these projects is Outside the Box - a series of events throughout the year that will be free and open to the public, and allow our community to see what our alumni artists have to offer (the first one is this Saturday, October 25, from 7-9 pm). We are also planning free exhibitions year-round in our gallery (you can see work by our alumnus, visual artist Hernan Bas, on display now through November 14th). We hope this newsletter will be just one way we can connect with you. We want you to know that you are welcome at our home and that we look forward to building a great community together - one that values the arts, and shares in experiences. Please read more below about our upcoming events, and stay in touch by joining our e-Newsletter list (additional information follows). We look forward to seeing you on our campus soon - and hopefully frequently. Sincerely,

Paul T. Lehr President & CEO National YoungArts Foundation

Our Growing Arts Community

Our neighborhood is in the midst of a cultural boom! With an already growing art scene in Downtown, Wynwood, and the Design District, which includes the private collections of Martin Marguiles, the Rubell Family collection, CIFO Art Space and others, the Edgewater community is ready to welcome the newest project by Bruce Berkowitz, founder of Miami-based Fairholme Capital Management. "We wanted to create a unique space that combined both work and play - business and arts and education," Berkowitz recently told the Miami Herald. "We thought about the idea of how to mix that all together, and there was an opportunity to purchase the works, and then we started to think about the building in relationship to the works."

The proposed building's shape, designed by Arquitectonica, was precisely tailored to display two highly engineered works by light artist James Turrell and sculptor Richard Serra. Both works were acquired for the site, a vacant block at Biscayne and NE 26th Street in Edgewater.

Berkowitz chose Edgewater because of YoungArts' move in 2012 into the historically and architecturally iconic former

Bacardi headquarters, five blocks to the south Biscayne Blvd." Read the full Miami Herald article here.
