News from in and around

Chicago

Warner (Bud) Weber Mesa, Arizona Chicago –C – SC – RP

Ol’ Bud Weber is now 881/4 years. I had a very light heart attack a year ago on my wife’s 83rd

birthday. She

had a severe stroke June 1st the same year. She had a DNR bracelet on. When having an x-ray, she died, but

the person doing the x-ray brought her back to life. She was now pretty much an invalid. While in a rest

home I was told I was too old to deal with her. I refused to have her taken away from me.

She has had brain surgeries (plural) that took lots of rehab. I had been told in 1982 by Mayo Clinic she

would be a cripple due to her spinal problems. I found a doctor that put rods and screws in her and she has no

problems spinewise. She has a replaced knee, both hips replaced, her right shoulder replaced and both breasts

removed. There have been other problems too but I was at her side during all of them. Very necessary nurses

make wrong decisions and she would not be here had some of the errors not been noticed by me. She was in

the University of Illinois in Chicago for 9 months. I had a parking space at their door plus a bed in her room

when I wished to stay overnight. When she had a tummy tuck at ST. Margaret Hospital in Hammond,

Indiana, she had a severe infection discovered by me. When I kissed her I realized she had a high

temperature, that took 5 months with the help from their wound clinic to get over it.

So I love what is left of her? Yes I really do. We still have good moments to enjoy. Her lack of ability to see

well, we play bingo, and pinochle, plus certain television shows. WGN news faithfully. I have hopes of

getting her swimming and her walking will improve. The stroke took a lot away from her. I review her life

for her often to put so much back as I can.

Gene Backlin took care of his wife Willa for ten years until she passed away. She had dementia. He visited

her grave daily until he too was laid beside her.

Freda has been a great part of my life. We married 3 months after meeting, one month and a half after she

turned 17, seventy seven years ago. We had four boats, a canoe, a sailboat, fishing boat and a speedboat. The

first day of retirement, she told me, “No more boating, I can’t swim – I hate the water”. The boats were gone

in a week. We were on the water often those 40 years. We had motorcycles, bikes, roller-skates, rode

horseback and great vacations. We had a plethora of friends. Old friends that lasted. Lots of parties, picnics

and fun places to enjoy. I could say more about Freda, but I will just say, I have loved her and always will.

birthday in Sept. 2012. We also celebrated our 50th

wedding anniversary in May, 2012 near

Donnelley Library Tour

On Wednesday, February 13 those of us who

assembled the mailing of the March 2013 Newsletter

were treated to a tour of the Donnelley Library which

is located in the new offices in Warrenville IL.

Phyllis Burgee, Director of Major Account

Communications led us on the tour. As you can see

it is nothing like the Library we all remember but the

company is still very proud of the history of the

Library. There are other display cases in the

hallways which hold many more Donnelley printed

treasures. Phyllis was very knowledgeable about the

history of RR Donnelley and showed us many

treasurers that we probably weren't aware of.

Hi! Just thought I’d send a note to say, I’m still here in Michigan. Last December we went to the Atlantis

Resort in the Bahamas. What a nice place! My wife and I rented a couple of electric carts for the week

because we had heard what a big place it is. We went everywhere with them, inside and outside of the

resort. We went snorkeling in “The Ruins,” a big aquarium with all kinds of artifacts that you expect to see

around the ruins of Atlantis. We swam with huge manta rays, spotted eagle rays, and all kinds of fish. It

was one of our best vacations ever. Thanks for the newsletter. It’s so nice to hear from everybody. That’s

all for now.

Russell Smeltz I’m fine and well after being retired 20 years. Moved to Amboy, Illinois in October 1994, best little town

in Illinois. Camp at one of the worlds largest campgrounds, Woodhaven Lakes. It covers 4000 acres and is

run like a small town. Please note the picture to town of Amboy put up on Easter Sunday, my 80th

birthday.

It reads “Happy 80th

Birthday Russell Smeltz March 31st”. I just think with all the publicity I may run

for mayor next year.

P.S. Please note how slim and trim I still look.

Don’t forget to write something about yourself, to help keep

in touch with your fellow retirees

Richard (Dick) Berwanger recently made a rare trip back to the Chicago area to visit relatives. After

Donnelley sent him and his family to Barbados to start up a plant, then to southern California, it was very

hard to get Dick and his late wife Mina (Personnel, Security, APO) to come home to Chicago, especially if

there was any hint of cold or snowy weather. He is shown here with brother and sister-in-law Chuck and

Joanne DePasquale. The Berwangers and DePasquales had not only strong family ties but all 4 were long-

time Donnelley employees

Fred Johnson

An Arizona Highway Patrol officer stops a Harley for traveling faster than the posted speed limit, so he asks the biker his name.

'Fred,' he replies.

'Fred what?' the officer asks.

'Just Fred,' the man responds.

The officer is in a good mood, thinks he might just give the biker a break, and write him out a warning instead of a ticket. The officer then presses him for the last name.

The man tells him that he used to have a last name but lost it.

The officer thinks that he has a nut case on his hands but plays along with it. 'Tell me, Fred, how did you lose your last name?'

The biker replies, "It's a long story, so stay with me.' I was born Fred Johnson. I studied hard and got good grades. When I got older, I realized that I wanted to be a doctor. I went through college, medical school, internship, residency, and finally got my degree, so I was Fred Johnson, MD.

"After a while I got bored being a doctor, so I decided to go back to school. Dentistry was my dream! Got all the way through School, got my degree, so then I was Fred Johnson, MD, DDS. Got bored doing dentistry, so I started fooling around with my assistant and she gave me VD, so now I was Fred Johnson, MD, DDS, with VD.

"Well, the ADA found out about the VD, so they took away my DDS. Then I was Fred Johnson, MD, with VD. Then the AMA found out about the ADA taking away my DDS because of the VD, so they took away my MD leaving me as Fred Johnson with VD. Then the VD took away my Johnson, so now I am Just Fred."

How to decide who to marry (the way children see it)

1. HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHO TO MARRY?

You got to find somebody who likes the same stuff. Like, if you like sports, she should like it that you like sports, and she should

keep the chips and dip coming. -- Alan, age 10

No person really decides before they grow up who they're going to marry. God decides it all way before, and you get to find out

later who you're stuck with. -- Kristen, age 10

2. WHAT IS THE RIGHT AGE TO GET MARRIED?

Twenty-three is the best age because you know the person FOREVER by then. -- Camille, age 10 3. HOW CAN A STRANGER TELL IF 2 PEOPLE ARE MARRIED?

You might have to guess, based on whether they seem to be yelling at the same kids.- Derrick, age 8

4. WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR MOM AND DAD HAVE IN COMMON?

Both don't want any more kids. -- Lori, age 8

5. WHAT DO MOST PEOPLE DO ON A DATE?

Dates are for having fun, and people should use them to get to know each other. Even boys have something to say if you listen long

enough. -- Lynnette, age 8 (isn't she a treasure)

On the first date, they just tell each other lies and that usually gets them interested enough to go for a second date. -- Martin,

age 10

6. WHEN IS IT OKAY TO KISS SOMEONE?

When they're rich. -- Pam, age 7

The law says you have to be eighteen, so I wouldn't want to mess with that. - - Curt, age 7

The rule goes like this: If you kiss someone, then you should marry them and have kids with them. It's the right thing to do. - -

Howard, age 8 7. IS IT BETTER TO BE SINGLE OR MARRIED?

It's better for girls to be single but not for boys. Boys need someone to clean up after them. -- Anita, age 9 (bless you child )

8. HOW WOULD THE WORLD BE DIFFERENT IF PEOPLE DIDN'T GET MARRIED?

There sure would be a lot of kids to explain, wouldn't there? -- Kelvin, age 8 9. HOW WOULD YOU MAKE

A MARRIAGE WORK?

Tell your wife that she looks

pretty, even if she looks like

a dump truck .

SPRING LUNCHEON - 2013

If you missed the Spring Luncheon, you missed a pretty good time! Everyone said the food was really,

really good and the program, “Old Time Radio” put on by Larry Bergnach was enjoyed by all. The Silver

Scripts group and our own Corporate benefits group were on hand to answer any questions regarding the

new prescription drug plan. We just want to say a special thanks to Alvina Kita for all her help in printing

out the name tags and welcoming the guests along with Sharon Kerr, Carol Malecki and Joan Mrozek as

they arrived. Our president, George Wenrich could not attend this years’ luncheon as his wife, Myrna

was ill so Jerry Malecki and Fred Mark stepped up to the podium and did a great job of filling in for

George at the last minute. This only proves that it takes a team effort and what a team we have! Thanks

to all that attended to make this a fun day!

Harold B. Hill (Chicago - Lancaster)

Harold Burton Hill passed away on February 6, 2013in the home of his son, where he

had been residing for the past six years. He was born in Alton, Illinois on August 9, 1917

and moved to Chicago where he started a career with R.R. Donnelley & Sons, his one

and only employer and the largest printing firm in the country. Like most men of his

generation, his work was interrupted by World War II and he spent four years in the Navy.

He is a decorated Navy Veteran and achieved the Purple Heart decoration during his time in

the service. Upon returning home he attended Northwestern University and majored in Business. He

continued his career and married the love of his life Genevieve Kurke; they shared 66 years together

before her death in 2007.

He leaves behind two children, his son, Burton (and daughter-in-law Mari-Jo) and daughter Barbara.

Also left behind are a beautiful granddaughter Whitney along with numerous nieces and nephews.

During his career, Harold reached a supervisory level position in Chicago and helped Donnelley

find an additional location in Lancaster PA. He was one of the first employees of Donnelley to

work in Lancaster and ended his service to the company there in 1974 after thirty-three years. He

was the Superintendent of the original plant on Steel Way which at its peak held over 300 employees.

Harold enjoyed golf, bridge and many friendships in Lancaster. He loved Penn State football and was

often in attendance for the Nittany Lions games. He has had a long life and will be swinging his clubs in

heaven.

He will join his wife Genevieve in the National Cemetery at Indiantown Gap, PA where he will be laid to

rest with military honors.

Executive Service Corps including service in the Ukraine.. Barry was active in his community, serving

as a Winnetka Park District youth football coach, Winnetka Library Board member, and a youth

education teacher in Bethesda, MD, Darien, CT, and Winnetka. He enjoyed many outside interests and

pursuits over the course of his life, among them horseback riding, sailing, tennis, running, fishing,

photography, even baking bread. First among his passions, however, was his family. Barry and his

cherished wife, Ginger, were true partners in life, and enjoyed extensive world travel together, and

THE POWER OF THE BADGE

DEA officer stops at a ranch in Texas, and talks with an old rancher. He

tells the rancher, "I need to inspect your ranch for illegally grown

drugs." The rancher says, "Okay, but do not go in that field over

there," as he points out the location.

The DEA officer verbally explodes saying, " Mister, I have the authority

of the Federal Government with me." Reaching into his rear pants

pocket, he removes his badge and proudly displays it to the rancher.

"See this badge? This badge means I am allowed to go wherever I

wish.... On any land. No questions asked or answers given. Have I made

myself clear? Do you understand? "

The rancher nods politely, apologizes, and goes about his chores.

A short time later, the old rancher hears loud screams and sees the DEA

officer running for his life chased by the rancher's big Santa Gertrudis

bull......

With every step the bull is gaining

ground on the officer, and it seems

likely that he'll get gored before he

reaches safety. The officer is

clearly terrified. The rancher throws

down his tools, runs to the fence and

yells at the top of his lungs…………

" Your badge. Show him your BADGE !

Please join me in remembering a great icon of the entertainment community:

The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection and trauma complications from repeated pokes

in the belly. He was 71.

Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin. Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects,

including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack,

California Raisins, Betty Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies, and Captain Crunch. The grave site was piled high

with flours.

Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Doughboy as a man who never knew how much

he was kneaded.

Born and bread in Minnesota, Doughboy rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with

turnovers. He was not considered a very smart cookie, wasting much of his dough on half- baked schemes.

Despite being a little flaky at times, he still was a crusty old man and was considered a positive roll model

for millions.

Doughboy is survived by his wife Play Dough, three children: John Dough, Jane Dough and Dosey Dough,

plus they had one in the oven. He is also survived by his elderly father, Pop Tart. The funeral was held at

3:50 for about 20 minutes.
