Directorate of Students’ Welfare

The whole world is going through an unprecedented situation due to COVID-19 and demands

diligent action. The situation looks grim; however, this is surmountable and can be encountered with

total grit and determination. In this situation everyone has to come forward to ensure that effect of

COVID-19 is mitigated. Dear students, your well-being is topmost priority of the university and it

would be ensured that the entire campus (including whole academic and hostel areas) will be

completely sanitized before all the students are back in the campus.

To ensure that your holistic learning does not stop during the lockdown period, MUJ has developed

a dedicated website, EduNxt and uploaded relevant learning material on the same. This website is

available to you 24 x 7. In addition to this, online classes are being conducted by the faculty

members. I urge you all to make effective use of the learning platform and online classes, which is a

blessing for the MUJ students.

Dear Students, we are also aware that you and your parents must be little anxious about the end

semester examination. I would like to assure you that university would adopt the best possible

solution in the interest of the students. The situation has called for paradigm shift in learning and it is

inevitable to make efficient use of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to further

your knowledge .

As responsible citizens of the country, we request all our students and parents to actively contribute

in spreading awareness about the precautions to be taken to arrest the spread of virus among

communities in the neighbourhood. Make use of technology innovatively to spread positive

messages without causing any panic among people.

Take care of your health and of your family members.

Interpersonal Communication

more easily

The process by which people

exchange information through verbal

and non-verbal messages are

interpersonal communication.

Interpersonal communication helps

people to connect with each other and

develop contacts more easily.

Page 13: ISSUE II // APRIL // 2020 · 2020. 9. 17. · 3 Prof. G. L. Sharma Dean Students' Welfare & Proctor Directorate of Students’ Welfare The whole world is going through an unprecedented

Interpersonal Communication

Characteristics of Interpersonal Communication

▪ LISTENING SKILLS: Active listening is an invaluable tool for facilitating effectivecommunication. Active listening is a communication technique that involves the full and activeapplication of the listener to what is being said. The full attention of the listener is given to theperson speaking. Often, visual cues are provided to the speaker to let the speaker know thelistener has given them their full attention.

▪ Active listening cues include:

Eye contact

Nodding the head

Smiling

Verbal affirmations, such as “yes,” or “ah,” or “mhmm”

These cues let the speaker know the listener isn’t simply hearing them but is actively listening. After

all, hearing is something that happens in the ears. But listening is something that happens with the

whole body.

Being an active listener affirms your ability to give to others. It displays your interest in the ideas and

perceptions of those around you. And it encourages the people you interact with to communicate and

to provide you with a forum for communication in return.

Page 14: ISSUE II // APRIL // 2020 · 2020. 9. 17. · 3 Prof. G. L. Sharma Dean Students' Welfare & Proctor Directorate of Students’ Welfare The whole world is going through an unprecedented

Interpersonal Communication

➢VERBAL COMMUNICATION: Effective verbal communication skills include more than just talking.

Verbal communication encompasses both how you deliver messages and how you receive them. If you want

to excel in your personal as well as professional life you need to improve your verbal communication skills.

Here are some tips to improve these skills and excel at your workplace.

Read more. It improves your vocabulary and helps you express ideas more clearly. It also eliminates

weaknesses in your language skills. It will be useful if you prefer to read things relevant to your field, e.g.

newspapers, and publications.

Prepare yourself. If you are anticipating any situation, take time out to prepare the answers to the questions

you may be asked. If you have to deliver a presentation, you should be prepared for tricky questions. You

may need to explain something in a different way. Be mindful. For clear, accurate, and considerate

communication, one should make sure that his words, tone, gestures, facial expressions, and body language

go with the conversation.

Think about people’s perspectives. Think about what you are saying from the listener’s perspective.

Formulate your responses accordingly. Just because you understand what you mean, doesn’t mean that they

will understand it too.

Page 15: ISSUE II // APRIL // 2020 · 2020. 9. 17. · 3 Prof. G. L. Sharma Dean Students' Welfare & Proctor Directorate of Students’ Welfare The whole world is going through an unprecedented

Interpersonal Communication

➢ NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION: Most experts agree that at least half of our communication with

others is done without words. So, that means body, posture, and facial expression play a huge role in

how others interpret what you say. If our bodies communicate disinterest as we’re trying to effectively

communicate, our message is not likely to be received well.

➢ Common examples of body language that communicates disinterest:

• Avoiding eye contact

• Folded arms or legs

• Glancing at the clock, watch, or phone

• Yawning

• Fidgeting

ASSERTIVENESS: Assertive communication is the ability to express positive and negative ideas and

feelings in an open, honest, and direct way. It recognizes our rights whilst still respecting the rights of

others. It allows us to take responsibility for ourselves and our actions without judging or blaming other

people. And it allows us to constructively confront and find a mutually satisfying solution where conflict

exists.

Page 16: ISSUE II // APRIL // 2020 · 2020. 9. 17. · 3 Prof. G. L. Sharma Dean Students' Welfare & Proctor Directorate of Students’ Welfare The whole world is going through an unprecedented

Interpersonal Communication

Here are some tips for practicing being assertive:

• State your point of view or request clearly.

• Tell the other person how you feel as honestly as you can, and remember to listen

to what they say as well.

• Think about the tone and volume of your voice – how you say it is as important as

what you say. Speak at a normal conversation volume, rather than a shout or

whisper, and make sure that you sound firm but not aggressive.

• Make sure your body language matches – your listener will get mixed messages if

you are speaking firmly while looking at the floor. Try to look the other person in

the eye, stand tall, and relax your face.

• Try to speak with facts rather than judgments. For example, “This report has

important information missing” rather than “You have done a bad job again”.

• Practice often – assertiveness is a skill which that requires you to practice in many

different situations. Don’t forget to praise yourself for your good efforts.

(Litmus Club)

A spectacular beginning ensures a flawless experience. With that thought, the seventh edition of the Manipal University Jaipur Model United Nations

Conference was successfully put into motion with its Opening Ceremony. Held in the open-air amphitheatre, in front of a bustling crowd of delegates from

different corners of the country, the evening began on an auspicious note with the Ganesh Vandana.

Riveting performances from the university’s music and dance clubs, and a gorgeous video illuminating the road to creating MUJMUN 7.0 were followed by the

lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the chief guest for the evening, Dr. H. Ravishankar Kamath, Registrar, Manipal University Jaipur, and Dr. Arun Kumar

Poonia, the faculty coordinator for Litmus, the literary society of the university. Speeches from both dignitaries and their encouragement of students’ talents

were met with cheers and applause. Last, but most assuredly not the least, the Secretary-General of the Conference, Ujwal Sachdeva, took to the stage to

reinforce his faith in hard work, honest ambition, and humanity’s efforts, and declared the Conference open.

With a clear aim for distinction and a dedicated plan to deliver, the Secretariat set about creating the best possible experience for the delegates in the coming

two days. The participants, volunteers, and everyone involved in the event could feel the buzz of expectation and excitement as they geared up for the second

day of MUJMUN 7.0.

The second day of the seventh edition of the Manipal University Jaipur Model United Nations Conference saw enthusiastic delegates entering their respective

committees with well researched, well organized and well-intentioned plans and ideas. Adhering to the portfolios of their allotments, delegates set about

finding the solutions to pertinent problems in the world of modern debate and governance.
