The University is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Dame Wendy Hall to the prestigious Chair of Regius Professor of Computer Science.

The Regius Professorship was awarded to the University in 2013 by Her Majesty The Queen to mark her Diamond Jubilee – the first and only Regius Professorship in Computer Science to be granted.

The Vice-Chancellor has given Professor Colin Grant, Vice-President (International) special responsibility for representing the University in regards to Brexit.

Speaking about his new responsibilities, Professor Grant voiced his passion for being “the best possible friend to Europe,” and stated that the University’s interests will be represented as broadly as possible in all areas covered by Brexit.

UNIVERSITY ACHIEVES ITS HIGHEST EVER WEEK 1 NSS RESPONSE RATE15 February 2017

The University received response rates from the first week of the National Student Survey (NSS), which opened on 6 February.

At an institutional level, response rates for week 1 were at 33 per cent, an increase of 22 percentage points compared with the same period in 2016.

2017’s week 1 figures are the highest response rate ever achieved by the University.

The University’s campaign to build a new centre dedicated to cancer immunology research has moved a big step forward thanks to a major gift.

The £1.35m donation from alumnus James Vernon and his wife Mindy, means the University has entered the final phase of the campaign to raise the target of £25m.

In addition to a base pay uplift (effective 1 August 2016), the final settlement of the University and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA) led 2016-17 pay negotiations confirmed the deletion of spinal

point 1 from the national UCEA single pay spine effective 1 April 2017.

The University is now preparing to remove spinal point 1 from its payroll and related systems effective 1 April 2017.

HONORARY GRADUATE TO LEAD MALAYSIA’S HIGHER EDUCATION MINISTRY14 February 2017

Datin Ir Dr Siti Hamisah Binti Tapsir has been appointed as the new Director-General of Malaysia’s Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE).

An accomplished engineer and academic, Dr Siti was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science degree by Southampton in July 2016 in honour of her many contributions to Malaysian higher education.

It is with great sadness that we inform staff and students of the untimely passing of Professor Keith Barber, Emeritus Professor of Environmental Change, who

also served as Director of the Palaeoecology Laboratory.

The University’s new research information system, Pure, has now launched.

Pure has now replaced ePrints for depositing research outputs. ePrints continues to be the University’s repository for web discoverability.

MINISTER FOR THE CONSTITUTION PRESENTS UNIVERSITY WITH ROYAL WARRANT16 February 2017

The Minister for the Constitution, Chris Skidmore MP, has formally presented the University with a Royal Warrant signed by Her Majesty the Queen, officially conferring Her Majesty’s recognition with the title of the Regius Professor of Ocean Sciences.

Regius Professorships are rare and prestigious awards. This award was bestowed by HM The Queen in recognition of the University’s international leadership in ocean science and the maritime economy to mark her 90th birthday. Southampton also hosts the Regius Professorship of Computer Science with both titles being entirely unique to the University.

PHILOSOPHER TO BEGIN TWO YEAR FELLOWSHIP AFTER BEING AWARDED

195,455 GRANT21 February 2017

Nils-Hennes Stear (currently a postdoctoral fellow at the National Autonomous University of Mexico) has been awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship funded by a €195,455 grant.

Starting in October 2017, Nils will spend two years with Philosophy at the University, working on his project entitled: Arts and Ethics.
