This year about 80 people took part in the procession and were joined by many more at the church gate. Special thanks must go to the 3 teams of Molly dancers - The Kings Morris Men, the Misfits and the Green Dragoons, who had all travelled various distances to be with us on the night. To the Revered Robin Blackall who blessed the plough for us at St. Andrew's church. To Cliff Anderson who organised the flaming torchlight procession and Heather and Harry Everett for the Road Patrol. To the St. Andrew's Players (and Anne Pope) for their rendition of a medieval mummers play and the children of the village school who danced the Broom Dance with such enthusi- asm. We are especially grateful to the Crown Inn for providing refreshments (hot soup and rolls) to all our participants and for allowing us to as- semble and commence the procession from there. John Haylock once again welcomed us to his yard for more dancing and allowed us the use of his kitchen for serving the mulled wine and mince pies. Plough Monday could not happen without the all important PLOUGH, and for that we thank the Cooper family, who kindly lend us this vital item every year. Without all of you, the people of Northwold would not be able to enjoy this very traditional celebration. Thank you all again. Jane, Ann and Brenda Sadly on the 16th October of last year, Northwold lost another one of its great characters Steve Stephens, AKA Squaddie Steve to Cancer. Akin to the character of the man, Squaddie did with this disease what he did throughout life, he confronted it with dignity and dealt with it in the correct way. For anyone that new him, his pass- ing will leave a huge void, but his unique character, his ability to make us laugh and, yes at times, his bluntness where re- quired, will ensure that he leaves an indelible mark on those that new him. Squaddie's remaining weeks were spent at Swaffham and Litcham Hospice a place where he was cared for impeccably. It was here that I, and others, witnessed first hand the nurses and their unflinching de- votion to duty and it was that experience that lead to the idea that has subsequently been dubbed 'The Walk Of Shame.' On Sunday 13th December 2015 Irish John Breheny and Jason Monks walked from the top end of the Village to The Crown Inn, but this walk had a twist, one of the afore mentioned individuals was sporting a solitary pair of Speedos and the other donning a menacing Mankini, for no other reason (allegedly) than to raise money for the Hospice. Steve was full of fun and so when deciding on an event, there was only one stipulation, that it was fun, and fun it was. The day in question was wet and cold, so it made Jason and John's efforts all the more memorable. For an event like this to work there has to be a fool guy, or guys on this occasion, and without their commitment to the cause none of this would of been possible, so a huge Thank-You guys. I would also like to say Thank- You to Dave and Cheryl who facilitated throughout, but the biggest Thank-You goes to those that contributed, because it is your generosity that has enabled us to raise in excess of £2270, a figure that is above and beyond our wildest expectations. The hospice re- lies heavily on donations so if this money can go someway towards making the remain- ing days of others that little more comfortable then their sacrifices were not in vein. Another new year… Another new term…More new children.

How lovely it is to return to school after theChristmas break and welcome some new chil-dren and their families to our school. Encour-aging families to The Norman School is ofhigh priority as keeping a village school ‘alive’is paramount in keeping young lives in thevillage.

Following the excitement of Christmas and thecelebrations we shared at school, all of ourchildren and staff have returned to work withenergy and determination.

Our classes are all looking forward to severalexciting learning opportunities that I hope to beable to share with you throughout the year. Allof our children are fortunate enough to be ableto visit Dawkins Covert to carry out learningunder the guidance of their teachers and VickyEyles our Forest School Expert. At this timeof year the environment at the Covert has aneerie emptiness and yet it begins to reveal somany signs of new life. Our Years 5 and 6children will be exploring the environment atthe covert from February 1st and they’re hopingto gain a real ‘hands on’ exploration of habi-tats, environmental factors and life cycles tosupport their scientific leaning. In addition tothe forest work, our Years 3 and 4 children areembarking on a journey back to The Stone Ageand are looking forward to a specialist experi-ence at the Ancient House Museum in Thet-ford. This is just a small taster of the wonder-

ful experiences we will be sharing with thechildren during 2016.

I rather like a quote I came across recentlyand feel that it is something we at The Nor-man will embrace as we journey our waythrough 2016:It’s time to unfold new horizons and realisenew dreams, to rediscover the strengthwithin you, to rejoice in simple pleasures andgear up for new challenges. May I wish you all a peaceful and pleasantNew Year.

Winter Poems

Wild, waving, washing waves.Icy, cold, slushy snowmen.Nasty, cold, shivering night.Twinkling, shining, sparkly stars.Ever-lasting, black ice, sliding wildly.Runny, slushy, crunchy snow.

Emily (Year 6)Windy days passing by,Icy, slippery puddles crack.New Year is coming soon,Trees are getting bald.Eating: roast, puddings and berries.Robin red breast chirping.

Toby (Year 5)

Wandering, lost snow rabbits.Icicles hanging from near and far.New built snowmen, cold as ice.

Terrible, frozen, FROST BITE!Ending life of flowers and nature,Racing deer through the forest.

Yves (Year 5)

Water filled garden, everything’s wet.Icicles emerge from bad weather.Nibbling biscuits, to dip in hot chocolate.Trees with no leaves all around us.Eternal coldness fills the air,Rain, hail, snow, making things beautiful.

The topic for the 2016 Carnivalis PAINT THE VILLAGE REDI have been informed that the Parish Councilfirst started the ball rolling in 1976 for thevillage. It was run the following year by thevillage groups so if my maths are right thisnext one is the 40th hence PAINT THEVILLAGE RED.

It is a day when all groups can join in andshow what our village can do. Unfortunatelyfor me this next one is my last as Chairman ofthe PTFA and we must keep the annual cele-bration going. Somewhere there must be some-one who is willing to take over and put theirideas forward. I will not just walk away butoffer any help to the person (s) that take over. The Carnival is looked forward my many peo-ple outside the village and always seems to fillthe Fendick Field. It's a great tradition whichmust keep going as many other towns, villagesetc have lost theirs for good.

The Ladies of the Northwold WI celebratedtheir last meeting of 2015 with a contributionsupper, a delightful talk and demonstration byMr. Timothy Green of Stoke Ferry, entitledChristmas Floral Arrangements, and everyonewent home with a gift from the Bran Tub.

Timothy Green designed two arrangements forus, the first being a Christmas Wreath, deco-rated with, pine cones, red tartan ribbon, goldbaubles and lemon orchids. The second dem-onstration was a beautiful basket, he startedwith a base of blue spruce, adding ivy, tinylime green chrysanthemums, deep red rosesand hypericum berries, it was stunning to lookat and smelled wonderful, two very luckyladies won the demonstration pieces in theraffle.

After our delicious supper, Brenda asked lotsof entertaining questions e.g. ‘has anyone everhad 3 points added to their drivers licence’?and whomever could answer ‘YES’ to thequestion, then picked a parcel from the pile ofpresents donated by each member and shock-ing as it sounds, there were more than onemember could answer ‘yes’ to that one! Imention no names!

All that was left to do was clear up, stack thechairs, wish each other seasons greetings andhead home, each of us looking forward to an-other full year at the WI in 2016

Our first meeting of 2016 got off to a flyingstart. We welcomed 37 ladies, a few ofwhom were visitors to the group, plus onenew Member. We began with our usualbusiness and plans for the New Year. Wehope to start a cinema/theatre group thissession, which I am sure will be very popu-lar. Also popular is the Northwold YardSale, and the good news is, the WI will beorganising the event again this year, on BankHoliday Monday, 2nd May2016. So, makea note in your diary, start putting aside allthose things you no longer use, but whichmay be useful to others and get all the detailsof how to book your pitch, from the adver-tisement in Village Life.

Following the business agenda, we kickedoff the New Year with a thoroughly enjoy-able Quiz Night. Judging by the laughter, itwas a great success, thank you to Ann forarranging the Quiz. Thanks you also toFiona, Jenny, Brenda and Barbara for ourdelicious supper. If there are any ladies outthere who would like to join us, please docome along, you will have a very pleasantevening, make friends and find out aboutyour local WI.

Beryl Quilter

and we are mid January already! During De-cember and January members of the LunchClub enjoyed two lovely meals. The first be-ing a Christmas meal with all the trimmings inDecember. This was a lovely festive occa-sion with many of the Northwold Car Schemedrivers joining us to enjoy the meal and listento the children from the Primary School sing-ing carols to us and with us. The secondwas on Monday, 11th January, 2016,when another delicious meal was prepared andserved by our ladies. We enjoyed friend's pieand vegetables followed by marmalade breadand butter pudding with cream. Thank youladies for all of your hard work in providingthese meals and also thank you to all of thosewho donated food/items keeping costs to aminimum but still providing excellentmeals. You all know who you are!

The Car Scheme for the last Quarter was ex-ceedingly busy. In fact, for the first time, inDecember, there were two occasions whenthere just wasn't a car and driver available sotwo appointments had to be postponed. Thiswas mainly due to so many requiring transportand with it being December, many volun-teer drivers busy with their families and someill themselves. Our volunteer drivers are sec-ond to none and ALWAYS try to cover anydrive they are asked to do if possible.

WHAT DOES THE DOCTORTHINK THIS MONTH?

All this changed before Christmas whenManagement requested one of those stoolswith a dropdown front which reveals shelvesfor shoe storage. No sweat! The master con-structor went online and ordered a DeluxeShoe Ottoman Bench which was advertisedas needing simple home assembly; surely, this would be no problem for the masterassembler! Eventually, it arrived in a box soheavy I could hardly lift it. That evening, thekitchen table was cleared and I laid every-thing out. Of course, one of the half moonthingies was missing but, with my past ex-perience, I could solve that problem. It soonbecame apparent that the piece had beendesigned by some oriental maniac who hademployed his three year old son to create theinstruction sheet which consisted entirely ofpictures and was, to put it politely, opaque! No problem for the master who has beendoing this for 50 years. Slowly and painfully, the furniture came together. Unfortunately, once the shell had been completed in accor-dance with the pictures, it became apparentthat it would have to be dismantled to screwin the internal fittings. Then, having reassem-bled the whole thing, the pictures told me toinsert the shelving slats. Unfortunately, inreality, this could not be achieved withoutdismantling the whole thing again. Alto-gether, two hours to complete the job, afterwhich I needed all my strength to get it up-stairs.

Chastened and with dented self-confidence, I shall think long and hard beforeembarking on another such project.

It was breakfast time at the Smiths' house.Linda turned to her husband Frank with anirritated look and said: "I bet you don't re-member what today is!" "Of course I remem-ber!" declared Frank, and hastily left forwork. When he reached his office, he imme-diately went to his best friend's office andshouted: "Mark, you have to help me - Ithink it's my wife's birthday today and I com-pletely forgot about it!"Mark calmed himdown and opined that he should send hiswife several gifts throughout the day. "Thatway there is no way she'll realize you justremembered. Besides, pick the right gifts andyou'll have a very happy woman on yourhands" Frank immediately went and didexactly that, sending his wife a beautifuldress, her favourite perfume and even somesexy lingerie, each delivered to the houseevery few hours. When evening came, Frankreturn to the house beaming with pride, andmet his wife standing with a huge smile onher face. "First the beautiful dress, then theperfume I like so much, and then even somesexy lingerie! You really surprised me mylove. I never thought I'd wear such beautiful

How are you with flat-pack furniture? Forthose of you who do not know, it is possible tobuy bookcases, tables, chairs, wardrobes froma variety of companies. The furniture comesflat-packed in a cardboard box; you open thebox, take out all the flat boards, which are pre-drilled with a variety of holes, and you alsotake out several plastic bags full of screws, bolts, wood dowels, strange half moon metalthings, a tiny Allen key which will wreck yourfingers if you do not buy yourself large Allenkeys, preferably with handles, and Heavenknows what else. If you are lucky, instructionswill be included and, if you are even morelucky, they will be in English. Often, one ortwo essential items will be missing from theplastic bags; strangely, there are never anyextra bits.

Having been trained in carpentry at school andby a fastidious father at home, I am quitehandy at installing kitchens and making stuff. Ihave been making these flat-pack wardrobes, bedside tables, bookcases, etc for 50 years ormore. Seven kids have bought their own homesand have then moved around a bit so there hasbeen plenty of opportunity for practice. So, it isfair to say that flat-packs hold no fear for me.Use a large area, lay everything out, check thatthe correct number of every item is present, check that the holes have been jigged correctlyand have a bit of a dry run before joining allthe parts together. Usually, this works andthere is no need for divorce, a common end-result from buying flat packs. This system letme down badly when I purchased a large out-door table and ten wooden armchairs for thepatio. I assembled the table first without diffi-culty. Flushed with success, I decided to makethe chairs on a “production line”. I opened allten cardboard boxes, pulled out all the piecesof chair – 2 sides, 1seat and 1 back – and laidthem out in groups – 20 chair sides, 10 backsand 10 seats. All that remained was to put themtogether. At this point, I discovered that thework of making the chair parts must have beenoutsourced to many different workers in Balior wherever they had been made, and all thechairs had been jigged differently, ie the holesfor the bolts would not line up as I had mixedup all the parts. That taught me a lesson but, eventually, victory was mine.

Dear Village Life.

We have been making enquiries as to why we(Normandy Close) and certain other parts ofNorthwold are not receiving fibre to cabinetbroadband. The Methwold exchange that weare linked to has been converted but a numberof sub exchanges (cabinets) in Northwold havenot. We are getting very bitter and frustrated atthe level of progress, and with no reason as towhy or when the remaining sub exchanges willbe converted. We have received an email fromBetter Broadband for Norfolk and those of youin a similar position may be interested in itscontents which we show below:-

"Having investigated I'm sorry to have to tellyou that your property is not planned to receivea fibre upgrade as part of the Better Broadbandfor Norfolk rollout.

To explain further, to achieve the greatest cov-erage possible for the investment available theCouncil has not identified specific locations forupgrade as this would have created technicalconstraints on BT and led to less coverage andspeed uplift across Norfolk. The current posi-tion is due to the following factors:

- The funding available for the first twotranches of the BBfN programme was onlysufficient to provide access for 90% of Norfolkpremises;

- Achieving a significant speed improvementwould require more expensive types of broad-band infrastructure.

The five rural Norfolk District Councils, haveeach allocated funding to further expand fibrebroadband infrastructure within each Dis-trict. The extent of this additional coveragewill be known by the end of February, and Iwill email you during March to let you knowthe outcome.

clothes to pick my mother up from the air-port!”

The other night Susan was invited out for anight with the 'girls.' She told her husband thatshe would be home by midnight, 'I promise!'Well, the hours passed and the margaritas wentdown way too easily. Around 3 a.m., a bitloaded, she headed for home.Just as she got inthe door, the cuckoo clock in the hallwaystarted up and cuckooed 3 times. Quickly, real-izing her husband would probably wake up,she cuckooed another 9 times and congratu-lated herself on the quick-witted solution inorder to escape a conflict. (Even when verydrunk, she figured 3 cuckoos plus 9 cuckoostotals = 12 cuckoos = MIDNIGHT!)The next morning her husband asked me whattime she got in. 'MIDNIGHT' she said and hedidn't seem angry in the least. Then he said 'Weneed a new cuckoo clock.'When she asked him why, he said, 'Well, lastnight our clock cuckooed three times, thensaid 'oh cr*p.' Cuckooed 4 more times, cleared its throat, cuckooed another threetimes, giggled, cuckooed twice more, andthen tripped over the coffee table andpassed wind."

Best wishes to you all Ian Nisbet

Monday mornings for his pupils was to copy out inlonghand the previous day’s collect. St. Andrew’schurch clearly still plays an important role within thevillage community and it is pleasing to note that justa few doors away from where the Smith family livedfrom 1936 until my mother, Ciss, died in 1980 at 45,Methwold Road, there is a regular Bible Study andPrayer Group. The older I become, and I am now anoctogenarian, the more convinced I am of the his-toricity of Jesus and the truth and relevance of Hismission to proclaim the good news of salvation. Please forgive the overuse of the personal pronoun inthis piece. Its purpose is to respond to Brenda andRalph’s tribute to their parents by recounting howmuch he influenced this particular ex Norman schoolpupil. I am so pleased that Brenda designed andmade the kneeler and that it is dedicated to her par-ents. I look forward one day to the poignant possi-bility of kneeling upon it.AddendumMy wife, Anna, and our two sons now 39 and 32have in past years enjoyed our visits to Northwoldespecially one occasion when we stayed at TheGrange, the former Rectory where in 1949, withother Northwold boys, I attended ConfirmationClasses under the Rev James Thompson. My lastvisit in February, 2015 was a sad one - to attend thefuneral of Cicely Steward. Cicely had taken out mylate sister Joan in her pram when the Smiths liveddown the Tan Yard in 1934 and 1935. Anna and Icame to Ted’s 80th birthday in the Village Hall andwe still exchange Christmas cards with him. Onboth occasions, it was good to meet up with oldNorthwold friends and neighbours. It was at theSocial Club after Cicely’s funeral service I learnt thatyour Chair, Carol, had been at the organ. Had Iknown at the time, I would have made a point ofcommending her personally for all she contributes tothe Northwold Village community.

Jack would welcome hearing from any Northwoldfriends at [email protected] even if it is just tosay hello!

As you see an item written by "Domine" - Mr Hardy- and though not dated I think he may be referring to90 West End (this house ) as it was built about thesame time as the Rectory. I cannot think of a secondhouse built at the same time. This place was built in

TRIBUTE TO EDWIN HARDYHaving attended the Infants School in Hall Lane,Northwold from 1940 and Northwold PrimarySchool from 1942 to 1949, I was delighted to readthe tribute to Edwin Hardy in your Decemberedition from Brenda Holland and Ralph Hardy.Like many others I am very indebted to him for hisinfluence in my life – and yes, I did once “get thecane” from him!One of the most fortunate happenings in my schoollife was to fail the 11 plus exam. Our Standard 4teacher at the time told me I would “never be asgood as my sister!” Edwin Hardy, however, wasmuch more positive and on reaching his classthings changed. He was a motivator and with hisencouragement, I passed the 13 plus exam andinitially attended Thetford Special GrammarSchool, then Wymondham College. Never abright academic and ever a late developer, I sam-pled tertiary education in my 30’s as a part timestudent at London University and in my 50’sscraped a Master’s Degree at Bristol University. Ifthere was any merit along the way, I attribute thatto Edwin Hardy’s influence when I was just ateenager at Northwold School - and one of the twolocal butchers’ boys! One activity Brenda and Ralph did not mention, which their father organized, was a boys’ youthclub on a week night evening. My late father, Jim,who died in 1974, sometimes helped out with thisand loved playing table tennis and some of theboard games.Being a regular reader of Village Life on-line, I ampleased to have opportunity of keeping informedof happenings in Northwold. Very pleased to notethat the Norman School is in good hands and thatthe strong Christian ethos continues. Incidentally, during Edwin Hardy’s tenure the first task on
