4 Continuing Our Journey

Dear Friends,

Christ is risen, risen indeed! We are in the Easter season as we celebrate the resurrec-

tion of Christ! A major theme in the resurrection story is “amazement”. The three

women go to the grave early in the morning and encounter a young man, sitting all

alone, telling them Jesus has been raised. He does not tell them not to be afraid, as an

angel usually would. He wonders why they are amazed as if Jesus being raised is the

most natural thing in the world. The young man instructs the women to let the disciples

know that Jesus is alive and will meet them in Galilee. But the trembling amazement of

the women causes them to be afraid; they run off and tell nothing to anyone. As Bob

Eldan writes that often there is much to fear in life. The baby is sick. Should we take her

to the ER? I am out of work. Do I pay rent or buy food? My spouse has been deployed.

I am scared. I am transgender and unjustly persecuted. What do I live for?

We fear because we do not know where we are going or what is going to happen.

“Crooked shadows pointing to tomorrow’s unknowns scare us.” When Mother Teresa

went into the dark slums of Calcutta she was afraid. But in the face of the starving poor

she saw Jesus. He was there already waiting for her. We can stand up in our faith that

Christ’s Spirit is waiting for us in an unknown place or situation and we can stand up for

each other. We do not have to know where we are going. However, believing in the

power of the resurrection does not mean that we be passive and do nothing but wait for

Christ’s Spirit. Because of Jesus, because of his empowerment, we also can stand up for

each other.

The Easter story remains unfinished for the resurrected Spirit calls us into the unknown

of our tomorrows, trusting in the love of God who is constantly restoring us to be who

we really are. Daily, God brings us back from the brinks of our lives, from despair, from

desperation, from fear, to live. In the very moments of the unknown God raises us up to

be ourselves!

So let us move forward into the unknown! What an amazing time this is!

In Resurrected Boldness,

Teri

LAWN CARE OFFERING

If you haven’t given to our “Lawn Care” fund yet, we are still accepting gifts

for this ministry! Our goal is to raise $5,000 for both a new lawn mower as

well as the supplies needed to build a shed to house it in! Thank you for

your generosity!

THANK YOU!

On behalf of the entire congregation, the church council would like to thank Darlene

Dokken for her faithfulness in cleaning the church for years. Each week Darlene would

clean bathrooms, dust, vacuum and do dishes just to name a few of her tasks. Our

church is blessed with Darlene’s servant heart and we thank her for all the time, ener-

gy, and love she has given.

BUCC INCOME & EXPENSES — MARCH 2018

CHURCH “TREASURE” SALE

Spring is here and that means the city’s clean-up project will be here soon! The church council will be holding a

free “treasure” giveaway, Sunday, April 8th, immediately after church in the education wing. Just like our homes,

our church has become full of items no longer used and these items will be laid out for anyone to freely take on

the 8th! Members of the council will be cleaning and laying out the “treasures” on Saturday afternoon, April 7th.

Treasures not taken will be placed on the curb for city clean-up!

We would like to remind members if they have given the church a memorial please let Jennifer or Kristi know so

we can document it. Over the years, paperwork has been lost and now the new people are trying to clean and de-

clutter the church but do not want to donate something that is a memorial item. Like everyone’s life there is a

time when even the church outgrows the usefulness of an item, however, we want to be able to ask the family if

they would like the memorial item returned to them.

Support for Local Feeding Programs

At their February meeting the church council voted to support two local feeding programs, The Harvest Table and Feeding Brookings. The council voted on supporting the Harvest Table for the first 6 months of the year and Feeding Brookings for the last six months. Totes will be placed in the entry way for nonperishable food items which will be donated to each ministry. Current needs at the Harvest Table are: canned meats (chicken, tuna, etc.), canned fruits, cereals, peanut butter, soups, and pasta. Other items in high demand are toilet paper, Kleen-ex, laundry soap and dish soap. The Harvest Table continues to distribute many baby diapers and baby wipes. Often during Lent we think about giving something up, but what if we challenge ourselves to take on something new this Lent? What if every time we run to the grocery store we buy one extra item for the Harvest Table? Let’s fill up those totes up!

We did have a few extra expenses this month that caused our shortfall. With Pastor Teri being gone our

attendance was down, in turn offerings were down. We also had extra payroll expenses last month and made our

quarterly insurance payment. We are continuing to make our same building payment even though it was low-

ered in the refinance. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Jennifer at the church office.

Call to order, 5:25 p.m.

Motion by Jennifer, second by Dave to approve Feb. minutes. Motion carried.

Treasurer’s Report. The $325 payment was to transfer Koinonia funds to separate account. Tithes were about $500 more than

expenses. $104.48 for Sunday school is for adult Sunday School books which the participants buy. The church loan payment is

listed separately as principal and interest and the additional $250 per month paid to the principal is not reflected as that is a

family donation. The official loan payment is under $500. Motion by Dave, second by Kahty to accept treasurer’s report. Motion

carried.

Old Business

Koinonia Craft/Bake Sale proceeds were about $1500.

Furnace: The Lennox man will stop on Monday, March 26, to check the furnace and give an estimate for work; Jennifer has not

yet talked to the person to get estimate for cleaning and repair of gutter.

Special offering for mower/shed will be Sunday, March 25

Jim put together an estimate of around $1900 for a shed with 6 ft. door including concrete slab—if we build it ourselves. He

estimated the building will cost a maximum of $2300. Metal roof and siding is an extra $65 over cement board or lapboard sid-

ing. No building permit is needed for a 10 x 12 or smaller building. Shed must be 30 ft from the sidewalk. Motion by Dave, sec-

ond by Christie to accept the shed proposal. Motion carried.

Estimate for mower is $2500.

New Business

SDSU contacted us about its Volunteer Day, April 14. Council decided to ask for at least 4 people from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. to

clear the two flower beds, so that grass can then be planted. We will provide lunch – Kathy will make BBQs/chips, Kristi wil

provide the hamburger; Christie will make dessert. Dave can be there.

Cleaning Church – estimated $150/month; Dave has person interested, but she’s not yet contacted Kristi. At Sunday’s service,

Teri will recognize Darlene for cleaning the church for est. 4 years

Birthday/anniversary cards – Will send signup sheet around on Sunday so we can make sure we have correct dates (we know

some are not). Kathy volunteered to do the cards.

Spring cleanup of extra items – Kristi will ask at service re: memorial gifts, so she can talk to donors of those items that are no

longer being used and ask if they want the items back.

Items that are not needed will be set out on Sunday, April 8, for anyone to pick up. What is not taken will be donated/disposed

of. Sorting of items will be done on Saturday morning, April 7 – Teri and Kathy can be there.

Other items

Ministry team schedule – Kathy will see if Marlene needs help with ministry teams. Need a list each month of the designated

family for each Sunday to post at church and on FB and website.

Kathy will prune the large plant.

Jennifer will find out date of state conference in May at Yankton.

Next council meeting will be Sunday April 15 at 9 a.m. – all who wish to attend are welcome.

WEDNESDAY AFTERNOONS IN LENT

Wednesdays in Lent found elementary children at the

church learning more about the life of Jesus. Each Wednes-

day the children participated in a drama about Jesus and his

ministry, played games, enjoyed snacks and grew closer as a

group! This group of children met during both Advent and

Lent and it has been a joy watching them grow closer to

each other and in their faith!

FROM THE MODERATOR

Spring is in the air, well maybe that is snow again, but spring will be coming soon. The council has been dis-

cussing plans for with the space between the sidewalk and the building. The trees need removing before any

damage is done to the building and the weeds need to be pulled. A group of SDSU students will be working

at BUCC April 14th, this is part of the “Jacks Give Back” community program. We will have the students clear

out the area and the church will fill it in with grass and a couple of flowerpots.

Last fall the council contacted a landscaping company and it was their recommendation to remove the ever-

greens and cut the bushes down along the sidewalk. The council has decided to implement their recommen-

dations; Dave cut the bushes back late last fall and will plant grass in the cleared area.

Please if you need to talk to me, call my cell phone 605-690-2820; if I do not answer, please leave a mes-

sage. If you want to send an email, [email protected]

Lawn Equipment Campaign

The first Sunday in spring was March 25 and although we still cannot smell any fresh grass clippings we are all being challenged to give to our “new lawn mower” fund! For years the church property (which is very large) has been mowed by the Marshall family and they have graciously been using their own personal mower. One of the items discussed at our annual meeting was the need for our church to own a mower along with a shed to store it in. Please consider making a contribution to this fund! And a huge thank you goes out to the Mar-shall’s for volunteering not only to mow the lawn but also for the use of their mower. Spring is here and soon-er or later the snow will be gone and the grass will need cutting! So far we have raised about $1000 toward new equipment and the shed! There are envelopes on the entry table for anyone wanting to contribute!

NEW MEMBER EVENT

A new member ‘class’ will be offered Wednesday evening, May 16th, at 6:00 pm at the church. A meal

will be provided along with a time of fellowship and learning more about the UCC denomination and

our local church’s ministries. It will be a fun evening as we get better acquainted with one another and

with our church! If you are interested in learning more about the church and attending this event

please let Pastor Teri know or email her at: [email protected].
