The Silver Bullet
The Official International Chronicle for Lone Ranger Fans
A sad time twelve years ago this December 28th
The Man, The Myth, The Legend
A fiery horse, a cloud of dust and a hearty "Hi-Yo Silver", he was The Lone
Ranger, a masked man who brought justice to the Old West. Astride his
faithful steed Silver and accompanied by his loyal friend Tonto they stood
fast and brave in the face of wicked outlaws and evil land barons. With his
guns firing silver bullets forged in the righteous furnace of justice, this noble
stalwart of decency and honor remains an enduring figure in our national
memories, and a reminder of the spirit of courage and faith that is the very
foundation of America.
From a heart attack, twelve years ago this December 28th we lost a man that
stood for right and wrong and justice for everyone. Clayton Moore gave us all
he had when we were kids in the 1950’s to help mold our lives into good
citizens. Gone but never forgotten in the pages of history, as his legend The
Lone Ranger will live on. We miss you Kemo Sabay and the kids today
could benefit from your guidance.
A child from an orphanage says it best. He is now an adult. Look at his video.
Or go to this website - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5S1gi8Eno5A It seems almost anyone over the age of 45 has a story to tell about Clayton. He reached the lives of so many people
who were at the time just a youngster. But as they grew up they never forgot the man with that special voice that
could be identified anywhere, whether on the television on in person. His voice seemed magical and you could feel
safe knowing you were in his presents.
Yes, there were other cowboys back then like Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Cisco Kid, Hopalong Cassidy,
Johnny Mack Brown and others who also helped show us right from wrong and justice for everyone.
But one man, only one man, wore a mask to cover his identity which made it very mysterious to the kids at the
time. Yet the mask was not the sign of an outlaw, but a good guy trying to right the wrongs of those that would
do evil to the settlers. Riding a white horse dressed with a silver saddle and a mighty cry Hi-Yo Silver Awaaay!
May we never forget and do our very best to make our younger generation of today knowledgeable of this special person
and hero, The Lone Ranger. ***********************************************************

Side Note – The woman standing behind Beverly Washburn is Bonita Granville. She was married to Jack Wrather who bought The Lone Ranger rights from George Trendell. Bonita was the person who lifted the restraining order when Jack died so Clayton could wear the mask again.
The child in the middle of the picture is Beverly
Washburn, who was in the first Lone Ranger movie
with Clayton Moore in 1956.
At the Roy Rogers Centennial Festival in Princeton,
Indiana on July 28th
it was a pleasure to sit down and
have dinner with this very personable celebrity.
Although very young at the time she made the movie
there was some very interesting behind the scenes
secrets that she revealed about how the show or
episodes were done.
She really appreciates her fans and is always willing
to take a moment to talk with them and thank them
for coming when she is doing personal appearances.
She was very surprised to see that I had gone to a lot
of effort to make myself and my horse Silver so
authentic.
On the picture she autographed for me she wrote, “It
is a pleasure to know you. Thank you for keeping the
Legend of The Lone Ranger going so that his
memory will Live on forever.” (the photo here is not
the actual one she signed for me)

This was sent to us by Daniel Cordosi, (as was written) LRFC member #640, Jamestown, New York
I was at the corner grocery store buying some early potatoes... I noticed a small boy, delicate of bone and feature,
ragged but clean, hungrily apprising a basket of freshly picked green peas.
I paid for my potatoes but was also drawn to the display of fresh green peas. I am a pushover for creamed peas and new potatoes.
Pondering the peas, I couldn’t help overhearing the conversation between Mr. Miller (the store owner) and the ragged boy next to
me.
‘Hello Barry, how are you today?’
‘H’lo, Mr. Miller. Fine, thank ya. Jus’ admirin’ them peas. They sure look good’
‘They are good, Barry. How’s your Ma?’
‘Fine. Gittin’ stronger alla’ time.’
‘Good. Anything I can help you with?’
‘No, Sir. Jus’ admirin’ them peas.’ ‘Would you like to take some home?’ asked Mr. Miller.
‘No, Sir. Got nuthin’ to pay for ‘em with.’
‘Well, what have you to trade me for some of those peas?’
‘All I got’s my prize marble here.’
‘Is that right? Let me see it’, said Miller.
‘Here ‘tis. She’s a dandy.’
‘I can see that. Hmm mmm, only thing is this one is blue and I sort of go for red. Do you have a red one like this
at home?’ the store owner asked.
‘Not zackley but almost.’
‘Tell you what. Take this sack of peas home with you and next trip this way let me look at that red marble’. Mr. Miller told the
boy.
‘Sure will. Thanks Mr. Miller.’
Mrs. Miller, who had been standing nearby, came over to help me.
With a smile she said, ‘There are two other boys like him in our community, all three are in very poor circumstances. Jim
just loves to bargain with them for peas, apples, tomatoes, or whatever.
When they come back with their red marbles, and they always do, he decides he doesn’t like red after all and he sends them
home with a bag of produce for a green marble or an orange one, when they come on their next trip to the store.’
I left the store smiling to myself, impressed with this man. A short time later I moved to Colorado , but I never forgot the
story of this man, the boys, and their bartering for marbles.
Several years went by, each more rapid than the previous one. Just recently I had occasion to visit some old friends in
that Idaho community and while I was there learned that Mr. Miller had died. They were having his visitation that
evening and knowing my friends wanted to go, I agreed to accompany them. Upon arrival at the mortuary we fell
into line to meet the relatives of the deceased and to offer whatever words of comfort we could.
Ahead of us in line were three young men. One was in an army uniform and the other two wore nice haircuts, dark
suits and white shirts...all very professional looking. They approached Mrs. Miller, standing composed and smiling
by her husband’s casket.
Each of the young men hugged her, kissed her on the cheek, spoke briefly with her and moved on to the casket. Her misty
light blue eyes followed them as, one by one; each young man stopped briefly and placed his own warm hand over the
cold pale hand in the casket. Each left the mortuary awkwardly, wiping his eyes.
Our turn came to meet Mrs. Miller. I told her who I was and reminded her of the story from those many years ago and
what she had told me about her husband’s bartering for marbles. With her eyes glistening, she took my hand and led
me to the casket.
‘Those three young men who just left were the boys I told you about.
They just told me how they appreciated the things Jim ‘traded’ them. Now, at last, when Jim could not change his
mind about color or size....they came to pay their debt.’
‘We’ve never had a great deal of the wealth of this world,’ she confided, ‘but right now, Jim would consider himself
the richest man in Idaho ...’
With loving gentleness she lifted the lifeless fingers of her deceased husband. Resting underneath were three
exquisitely shined red marbles.
The Moral:
We will not be remembered by our words, but by our kind deeds. Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but
by the moments that take our breath.
What a nice story. Have you a story, if so email it to us? Or tell us about
meeting Clayton Moore, or Jay Silverheels.
Murray Quinn, LRFC member #406 asks for other Fan Club Members help.
This photo was taken at Treasure Island, CA, site of the 1939 World’s Fair. This group was winners of a contest conducted by
The Lone Ranger Radio series. I remember that the contest consisted of several pages of safety questions and, I am sure,
about The Lone Ranger. That is Johnny Weissmuller (“Tarzan”) on the left. Chaprarones are to the far left. We were bused
from the Los Angeles area to Treasure Island and we stayed in a hotel for, if I remember, three days.
I cannot identify the adult standing to Weissmuller’s left. Could he be the radio voice (Earle Graser) of the Lone Ranger program?
Can anyone identify any of the group members?
I am in the front row, second from the right, kneeling. If anyone has any information about this picture would you please email me?
Hope someone can help.

Where can a man in a blue tight suite meet another man in a blue suite also riding a
white horse? Only on the Kemo Sabay trails across America, that’s where.
One day here at the Fan Club we get an email from a Bill Sipe. He tells us that he
occasionally does some Lone Rangering just for fun and that he has a white horse. In
his email mail he asks if our Lone Ranger should ever be in his area he would like to
have a chance to say hello.
We emailed back to him that if he was ever in this area we would let him know.
About 6 months later we got a call from an event that would take our LR on the
Pennsylvania Turnpike, along I-76 staying at a motel within 5 miles of Bill’s home.
We notified Bill of this and he was persistent on wanting to meet TLR and see his
white horse. Bill was told that if it could be arranged the meeting would have to be
brief, as TLR had to be on the road early the next morning. The road manager, Shiloh,
called Bill after they checked into the motel.
It happened. On May 18th
, 2011 Bill and his wife Carole met The Lone Ranger and his
horse Silver. But this is not the end of the story.
On the way back across Country TLR was the guest at their home for two days
enjoying some of Carols famous Barbeque cooking. Talking and exchanging Lone
Ranger stories long into the night. What a delightful time for everyone. Bill is also a
gun restorer and has his own machine shop.
The next day was a first for everyone. The Two Lone Rangers or maybe it’s The Two
Amigo’s.
Our Lone Ranger on the Left, Bill Sipe, with his horse on right – (right pix) Bill Sipe, LRFC
member #219
(Pix left, Bill with his wife Carole)
The rest of the story is that our Lone
Ranger organization had a fantastic time
with Bill and Carole. They are really down
to earth, kind and considerate people
enjoying everyday life with each other.
The highlight at the end of the visit is that,
we all sat around eating her mysteriously
prepared and fantastic blueberry pie. Now
folks this is not just your run of the mill
pie, it was a blueberry pie that was
different from any other I had eaten……It
was delicious and this Lone Ranger had a
hard time getting back into the blue suite,
cause I ate more than half the pie,,,,
Ummmm delicious.
Despite the cool and rainy weather we all had fun and it was difficult to say good bye
to good friends and another Lone Ranger, but we had to hit the Kemo Sabay Trail once
more. We shook hands and then waved to them as we rode out in a cloud of dust saying
Hi-Yo Silver Awaaay!
Most definitely we hope to return to see them again and hopefully have some more of
that Blueberry pie. Footnote – Bill has since helped us with some shows and appears as Dan Reid,
Jr., Nephew of The Lone Ranger.
Here is what Bill wrote to us about how he got involved and interested in The Lone
Ranger
“My Quest for Silver”
By Col. Wm. Hays (SASS 7815 Life)
AKA William H. Sipe
TLRFC #219
My first memory of seeing the Lone Ranger was when I was three years old and we got our first television set. That was in 1956. I
was fascinated from the start with the mysterious masked rider on the white horse. My father was a horseman and for my fifth birthday
in 1958 got me a white pony which I promptly named “Silver”. “Silver” and I had many fantasy “Lone Ranger” adventures over the
next few years. I always wore the black mask and double holster cap gun rig that my grandma got me on Christmas.
As the year passed and I grew older I always kept an eye open for anything pertaining to the Lone Ranger, interviews, books, movies,
trivia etc.
My love of the fantasy old west, I came to find, was shared by many others. In 1995 I became a member of the Single Action Shooting
Society (SASS) with the membership number 7815. River Junction Shootist Society in Donegal, PA was co-founded by me in 1998
to foster the sport of Cowboy Action Shooting. By 2000 I had assembled a Clayton Moore era Lone Ranger outfit which I first wore
at the SASS Southeast Regional at Mule Camp. I won the B Western costume contest.
I was hooked; I developed outfits for the Lone Ranger’s “Old Geezer”, “Red Regan”, and 1930’s Comic book Lone Ranger. I wore a
different outfit over a subsequent four day SASS Regional Shoot under the title “The many faces of The Lone Ranger.”
In 2007 I was invited to ride my neighbor’s horse, thus rekindling an enjoyment that had been dormant for 27 years. This lead to my
leasing a riding horse for a few months until I found one of my own. I ended up with a white, 20 year old mare named “Claire”.
Hardly the mighty white stallion of my dreams but we all have to start somewhere. After 2 years of perfecting my riding and later
balloon shooting skills off “Claire” I was ready to move on.
In July of 2010 I purchased a white, 9 year old gelding now named “Silver”. He is my dream horse and seems to understand English.
He has plenty of stamina for the experienced rider but is gentle enough for the novice. I believe he truly tries to live up to his
namesake.
I have also gotten back into another latent interest, that of leather craft. I have made some of “Silver’s” tack and the famous two gun
rig and trouser belt for myself; I also have perfected a system to make the mask.
My wife shares my equestrian interest and has a beautiful 7 year old red paint gelding named “Scout”. I have another SASS friend
who looks like Jay Silverheels and portrays “Tonto” on “Scout”. Yet another SASS friend who does not ride portrays “Tonto” when
we are asked to visit schools, churches, and other events.
For now I am just enjoying myself in this fantasy and hopefully bringing back good memories to some and making new ones for
others. I hope you have enjoyed hearing about it as much as I have enjoyed sharing it with you.

I just wanted to write and thank you for the membership certificate. It arrived
yesterday and is most impressive. I'm looking forward to my membership
under your management of the LRFC.
To put a different spin on the upcoming LR movie, I frankly wish that Disney
studio would NOT make the movie. Too much harm has already been done to
the Lone Ranger character for those of us who grew up in the 50s by the 1981
movie and the two comic book series issued by Topps and Dynamite
Entertainment. Sometimes, it’s best to let a legend remain in the past with its
quality character left intact. Does anyone remember the first Mission
Impossible movie which had its long time heroic leader Jim Phelps revealed as
the traitorous mole? Disney representatives have already stated that their LR
movie will be very different from the old LR story line. Please, don't tarnish
my memory of who the LR was and what he stood for. Make a movie about a
new character instead. Let our LR remain in the past intact with all the heroic
qualities given to him by Fran Striker.

Our youngest Lone Ranger Fan Club Member #524 is Jackson Faccio, age 3 from Buckeye, Arizona
Jackson is really into doing the good deeds like every Lone Ranger enthusiasts should be following. This article and pictures were sent to us by his mother. One of the reasons we have our son watch the Lone Ranger is the excellent moral code he represents!! There is so much out there that is too much for children, so we are ecstatic that Jackson has chosen the Lone Ranger as his hero. I will attach a couple of photos for you to see. Look at the video in the background and you will see what "our Lone Ranger" is watching. . My husband and I are learning about the Lone Ranger right alongside of our son. We have friends who grew up watching the Lone Ranger on TV. One used to watch the original episodes through a neighbor's screen door as their family did not have a T.V. Another actually received a silver bullet from Clayton Moore years ago, but has lost this bullet. On Sunday at church, Jackson gave pretend silver bullets to all the ladies in the senior adult class. Then he rode off in a gallop on "Silver" to his Sunday school class and said, "Whoa Silver." as he approached the door.
Thank you again LRFC for supporting this good guy of days gone by!! Here in the west, in Buckeye Arizona, we are protected by our little Lone Ranger!! Regards, Sara Faccio
P.S. Our Lone Ranger Fan Club organization and our Lone Ranger Tribute Performer’s main purpose is to bring The Lone Ranger and Tonto image and the creed for which they stood, to the young kids. Even if it is one child at a time. Best wishes to Jackson as he is building his moral character along the pathway of life. We all at TLRFC would to meet him someday.
We have received information that might be of interest to all of you western cowboy’s and cowgirl’s about a new book titled “Unmasked.” It gives you
the origins of some of the
most popular cowboys.
Everyone recognizes the
names of the Cisco Kid,
Hopalong Cassidy, Zorro and
the Lone Ranger. But how
many actually know the
characters from their fictional
roots? Years before
appearing in film, on radio
and television, their creators painted a rather different picture of each from what Hollywood
presented for these legendary heroes of the silver screen.
In this handsome volume Unmasked collects the first appearances of the Cisco Kid,
Hopalong Cassidy, Zorro and a forgotten novel of the Lone Ranger.

It seems that those of us interested in anything about The Lone Ranger have become
excited and eager to find out any news about the future of our hero.
Well I am to tell you that the new movie is not finished or hung out to dry.
Quietly behind the scenes there is still progress in doing a new movie.
In a little know secret area of California there are five new Silver’s being trained
for the movie. We have discovered one of the new Silver’s.
Chosen for her jumping ability Phoebe,
from Woodstock, Illinois will be one of the Silver’s
used in the new movie. Yes, you read it right. This
horse is a mare 15.3 hands tall with pink
skin, natural hooves and is a five year old white
thoroughbred.
I personally had the pleasure of talking with
Phoebe’s owner, Amber Bauman who is the owner
of Valley View Acres. Bauman breeds
thoroughbreds in unusual colors, such as white, palomino and buckskin.
Earlier in 2011 a representatives flew out to ride Phoebe and to make sure
she met the requirements for the size and temperament for the role. However Bauman
is not sure what she will be trained to do in
the movie.
In our opinion (TLRFC) the producers feel
certain that the average person will never
notice she is not a stallion or notice the
difference in any of the horses playing
Silver. Also it is nice to know that the image of Silver will be carried on and
represented by this beautiful white horse named Phoebe. Hi-Yo Phoebe Awaaay!
I have also been informed by another source that the construction on the movie set is
still continuing. Where will the final sets be built?
Reported by
Tex Holland
Updated news about the movie confirms it is still a go – However it is Ted Elliott
and Terry Rossio who are to eliminate some pricey f/x sequences involving
supernatural elements - read more about it – click here
TLRFC does not believe there should be supernatural elements added to The
Lone Ranger. The moral of the story should keep him human with natural
abilities. Fans maybe this is going to be another LR movie that needs to be boycotted.
What do you think??? Watch the March SB for member comments.

Volunteers help The Tribute Lone Ranger at a show
Last spring, I was happy to learn the Lone Ranger Tribute Performer was going to be coming to Indiana as part of the Roy Rogers
Centennial Celebration. Better yet, the LRFC was seeking member volunteers to assist Lone Ranger during the 3 day weekend event.
I quickly asked to be included.
Fast forward to summer and….as more details became known. I came to learn dates (July 22 – 24, 2011) and found that I was
available for 2 of the 3 days…Friday and Saturday. In the end, not only I but also my wife, Ruth, was able to volunteer. Now you have
to understand, I am the REAL Lone Ranger fan, but Ruth joined me (back in the early 90’) to make it ”our” quest for collecting Lone
Ranger memorabilia. To date, we have over 600 items…and all the Tonto stuff is considered hers. We even had Lone Ranger and
Tonto licenses plates on my and her cars.
Okay…back to volunteering. As it turned out, the week prior to and the weekend of the event it was HOT…the temperatures were in
the high 90s and low 100s. True to form, the weather remained very hot throughout the event. So hot, that the Lone Ranger and his pal
Shiloh really suffered because of the heat. But the show went on and Lone Ranger did a great job of entertaining the attendees. Silver
is a beautiful specimen and truly looks like the real Silver.
Veterans honored at the show by LR (Randy in front of LR) Randy and Ruth Johnson with LR and Silver
As volunteers, our role was to assist in set up, the selling memorabilia [and autographed pictures taken with Lone Ranger] and tear
down. The fun part was that I was able to play the role of Tonto in the skit, while Shiloh, Lone’s assistant, did sound effects.
At the event, we meet a number of other Western look-a-likes, including another Lone Ranger [Don Cagle, from OH] and a “Jay
Silverheels” looking Tonto [John Phipps from IN]. Both were very cordial and it was a thrill to get their pictures along with LRFC’s
Lone Ranger and pictures of them with Ruth and myself, as well.
I would encourage other LR Fans, if given the opportunity to volunteer to assist in the future…don’t be shy, step up and help. You’ll
be glad you did.

As writteen by Megan:
My name is Megan. I am 10 years old and in the fifth grade. I am Member #614 in the Lone Ranger Fan Club.
My grandmother (Nana) and Uncle Don introduced me to The Lone Ranger with the first and second seasons
of the DVD set. It was one of the best days of my life.
I never wanted to stop watching the shows. One day this summer I watched 21 episodes in a row.
Tonto is my hero. He helps other people even if he gets nothing in return. I would love to have a
pretty horse like Scout one day.
Nana said she would make me a Tonto costume if I wanted. I was jumping for joy when she said
that. It took a while to find the right material but we finally found it. Nana says cutting the fringe
took the longest but it was worth it.
Here’s a regular picture of me and also one of me with my Tonto costume on.

U.S. House of Representatives Adopts Right-to-Carry Reciprocity—
Friday, November 18, 2011
On Wednesday, Nov. 16, the ongoing effort to fully vindicate the fundamental, individual right to carry a concealed handgun for self-
defense took a major step forward with House passage of H.R. 822, the “National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011.” The bill,
sponsored by Reps. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) and Heath Shuler (D-N.C.), which has 245 cosponsors, was approved by an overwhelming
bipartisan vote of 272-154.
This legislation requires states that currently allow people to carry concealed firearms to recognize other states’ valid concealed carry
permits, much like states recognize driver’s licenses issued by other states.
This critical legislation now moves to the Senate. Please contact your Senators and urge them to bring H.R. 822 up for a vote at
the earliest possible opportunity!
For those of us that do western shows across the country and for people that carry them for self-defense, having a right to carry license
considered in all States like a driving license is very beneficial and law abiding.
During a visit to my doctor, I asked him, "How do you determine whether or not an older person should be put in an old age home?
"Well," he said, "we fill up a bathtub, then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the person to empty the bathtub."
"Oh, I understand," I said. "A normal person would use the bucket because it is bigger than the spoon or the teacup."
"No" he said. "A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want a bed near the window?"
