Whether you are dog tired (very tired), living a dog’s life (difficult life), or so busy you feel like you are chasing your own tail (working hard but not seeing progress), this Tidbits should give you a reason to go hog wild (become highly enthusiastic)!• An idiom is “a set expression of two or more words that means something other than the literal meanings of its individual words.” The idioms we’ll explore in this Tidbits are those that deal with animals. • Watch these pages like a hawk (carefully) to see if you recognize these sayings. You may find that many are very familiar to you. You may also find some that are complete hogwash (nonsense). In trying not to beat a dead horse (engage in pointless and repetitive discussion), you may want to read these at a snail’s pace (slowly) so that you can catch the meaning of each sentence! • An expression that seems to have disappeared or just never caught on with current generations is “I’ll swan” or “I’ll swanee!” Mostly used in the south, this is an expression of surprise probably as a replacement for “I swear” or a curse word. CAT AND MOUSE (continued): • Many expressions are ingrained in our vocabulary when we are only knee high to a grasshopper (very small.) Some are kept out of earshot of children because they may not be appropriate for young ears! (Those won’t be in Tidbits!) • While little children may be cute as a bug’s ear (the smaller they come, the cuter they are), some are bullheaded (stubborn) and make a beeline (go toward) to trouble. After all, when the cat’s away, the mice will play (people misbehaving without supervision). • Sometimes supervision is in the hands of the biggest frog in the pond (most important person in a group), while at other times it may be given to the leader who is as calm as a toad in the sun (calm and content). Either way, if there is conflict, it may be necessary to separate the sheep from the goats (distinguish the good from the bad). • When conflict arises, there are times when people act like animals. A dumb cluck (person acting stupid) may be pigheaded (stupidly stubborn) and try to find a scapegoat (innocent person who is blamed) when things go wrong. • A bullheaded (obstinate) person may try to butt heads (to argue fiercely) with a sheepish (embarrassed) friend only to find that she will pull the wool over his eyes ( fool him).• It is easy to get fleeced (swindled) if you don’t pay attention to what is happening to you and just ignore obvious problems. If you make yourself a sitting duck (easy target) you may end up in a harebrained scheme (foolish plan). • It is much better to have all your ducks in a row (be organized), than to go down a rabbit hole (enter a fantasy world) when you need to make decisions. • Hold on if you think we are barking up the wrong tree (have the wrong idea), fantasy worlds can be fun and engaging. Just remember that it’s a dog-eat-dog world (there is a lot of competition in life) out there and you need to be careful not to be constantly chasing your own tail (working hard but not getting anything done)! • If organizing gives you a burr under your saddle (causes you to be irritated), remember that the early bird gets the worm (start early so that you have the best chance for success). • Seeing an opportunity to improve your life or your situation, sometimes requires walking on eggshells (being careful not to offend others) or a somewhat opposite situation; taking the bull by the horns (tackling the problem). • You sure don’t need to be told that you are not the sharpest quill on the porcupine (not very smart) if you are having a hard time with an assignment. Most people realize when they struggle and have butterflies in their stomachs (feel nervous) when they have bitten off more than they can chew (taken on too hard or big a task). • Speaking of chewing, when you are hungry as a bear (really hungry), it is usually best to take your time eating anyway. Don’t be silly and wolf down your food (eat too fast) or you may find yourself sick as a horse (very sick)! • Hold your horses (be patient) when you need to wait for your food, whether at your home, someone else’s home or a restaurant. Be a good egg (nice person) not a bad egg (bad person) and avoid fighting like cats and dogs (fierce argument). Don’t bite the hand that feeds you (harm someone who is helping you)!

Feeding Your Cat a Proper Diet – How Do You Know? The first rule of feeding cats is feed them what they will eat. The second rule of feeding cats is feed them the best diet you can find. So, how do you know what to feed? There are so many diets on the market these days with so many claims, promotional endorsements and pseudo-science that even a veterinarian has a hard time evaluating the science behind the diet. Many diets appeal to fads and the vegetarian myth but the cat is an obligate carnivore. Most of what is on cat food labels is misleading and only tells part of the story. The label reports crude protein not digestible protein, crude fat not digestible fat, there is usually no mention of the % of carbohydrates, there is no mention of the type of fiber – soluble vs insoluble and there is no mention of the calories per serving (new for 2011 will be calories per serving – the first big change in pet food labeling to help the consumer). The list of ingredients is not a true reflection of what the food actually consists of. The first four ingredients are what make up the food’s nutritional content. Misleading terms and percentage of ingredients mask the true quality rating of the food. Cats eat protein and fat because they are obligate carnivores! Natural and/or raw food diets can be a problem with contamination versus hunting cats with fresh kill and normal flora. Natural food diets should not be a spin-off of human natural food thinking (including apple, cranberry, rosemary, etc.) but should emphasize quality protein and fat sources. Quality cat foods have verifiable analyses and feeding trials that prove the food is healthy for cats. Reading a label does not always give you answers that you need to make a good decision. You may need to use the 1(800) number and ask questions:

· Compare dry and canned food on a dry matter basis and what is the calorie content?

· How much carbohydrate makes up the diet?

· What are the digestible amounts and sources of protein and fat?

During your annual cat’s physical examination ask your veterinarian for food recommendations. Feeding a specific diet for 1 month and observing quality of haircoat, activity level, amount of food and water consumed, output of feces and urine and your cat’s interest in people and play will be the best observed indicators of how the food is performing.

Jade Jade has been known to mankind for some 7000years, but in prehistoric times was known more for its toughness and was used for weapons and tools. As early as 3000 BC jade was employed inChina as a royal gem and has enjoyed a long history in the art and culture of the Chinese empire. Over the years the people of Asia have placed a greater importance on jade than any other culture. The ancient Mayas, Aztecs and Olmecs of Central America also valued jade – even more

highly than gold. The Maoris of New Zealand continue to use jade in weapons and cult instruments, a practice that began in early times. In ancient Egypt jade was admired as the stone of love, inner peace, harmony and balance.

Other religions and cultures have also deemed jade as a protecting force and good fortune. Today this gem is believed to be a symbol of goodness, beauty, justice, wisdom, compassion, and courage, not to mention, female-erotic!Jade’s subtle luster along with its naturally tough-ness may be why it has been so appreciated around the world and down through the centu-ries. It comes in many ne nuances of green, but also in shades of white, black, gray, yellow, orange and even in delicate violet tones.

CAT AND MOUSE (continued):• Take the bull by the horns (face difficulty) when you are strong and can rule the roost (be the boss), but don’t get egg on your face (be humiliated) by taking on more than you can handle. Don’t count your chickens before they hatch (don’t plan on having something until you actually get it)! • If things are going well in your family or work life, don’t kill the goose that lays the golden eggs (don’t destroy the source of your good fortune). Be thankful and don’t ruffle any feathers (don’t upset anyone) or you may find yourself eating crow (having to admit that you are wrong). Remember birds of a feather flock together (similar people stick together). • Don’t be a fraidy cat (a coward) when it comes to trying new things. Carefully weigh the risks and wing it (improvise) as you are learning. If you get sent on a wild goose chase (to be sent searching for something that can’t be found), then learn from your search. • It is better to let the cat have your tongue (be quiet) than to pretend to be a fat cat (rich and powerful person) when you really have nothing to brag about. After all, the best laid plans of mice and men often go astray (even careful plans can go wrong). • Many times in our everyday lives the weather can be an influencing factor in our decision making. If it is raining cats and dogs outside (raining hard) then we are likely to be as happy as a clam (contended) staying at home reading a good book or watching a movie. If the sun is shining and it is nice and warm out, we are likely to go out to have a whale of a time (great enjoyment). • See you later, alligator (good-bye for now)! After while, crocodile (good-bye to you, too)! Tidbits will be back next week.

Home for the Holidaysby

Rosette Subia

The holidays seem to arrive earlier each year. Our time is spread so thin between work, family and, hope-fully, a few minutes for ourselves. With days dwin-dling until Christmas it may be difficult to find the time to be as thoughtful as we’d like in our gift giving. Here are a few gift ideas for our loved ones on their way home from rehabilitation.

Assistive items may be a great option. These items could make day-to-day functioning easier and help stay independent longer.

Many stores offer specialized equipment such as audio clocks and talking wristwatches. Other helpful devic-es include adapted cutting boards with side bumpers, pins to hold food in place and suction cups to keep the board from slipping: or jar pops to life flip-top food cans; and even knives designed for one-handed use or for those with limited hand strength.

Perhaps a stocking could be stuffed with a button hook, zipper pull, long handle comb or hair brush. Each person has their onw special need so ask you loved ones physical or occupational therapist for rec-ommendations and resources.

Happy Holidays

Protecting Your Lawn in Winter

The early Denver area winter season can be unpredict-able. With temperatures ranging from mild to freez-ing, and precipitation patterns quite literally all over the place, we never know exactly what to expect in December and beyond. It’s no surprise that these er-ratic conditions tend to wreak havoc on our lawns.

Not to worry – winter doesn’t have to mean devasta-tion for your lawn. Simply follow these easy tips and enjoy a strong, hardy lawn no matter the season.

Decrease Foot Traffic

The feeling of grass between your toes is, unfortu-nately, a luxury reserved for the warmer seasons. The December through January stretch often brings about wet, gray weather that can leave your lawn a mat-ted down mess. Foot traffic across the lawn will only result in added stress to your already exhausted turf. If possible, avoid walking on the lawn temporarily until local conditions improve.

Watch Those Tire Tracks

Significant lawn damage can arise during these early winter months – especially when a vehicle is involved. Many homeowners have driveways that border their front lawns. While grazing that border with a tire may not cause noticeable damage dur-ing the summer, severe “stripping” of the lawn often occurs during sloppy conditions. Remaining extra cautious now will mean a fuller, healthier lawn come springtime.

Don’t Leave Your Leaves

Is your lawn littered with heavy, wet leaves? Extended leaf coverage can suffocate the lawn and lead to a wide range of harmful turf diseases. A quick clean-up or raking session will get your lawn back on track.

Tidy Up

Items left on the lawn, such as toys, patio furniture, and ornaments, place unnecessary stress on grass plants in their weakened state. Avoid damage and potential lawn baldness by storing items in your shed or garage. Regular tidying up can make a world of dif-ference to the look and feel of your lawn.

Master, Academy of General Dentistry

Q. Who’s Birthday is it Anyway?A. In our rush for shopping, cooking, partying, traveling, etc., it’s so easy to forget “The Reason for the Season”. Let’s just pause for a moment or two, and in the quietude of our hearts, wish “Happy Birthday” to the Christ Child.Q. Why do some people put an “X” in front of the “------mas” of “Christmas” ? A. I don’t know. Maybe they’re just not thinking; too “busy”, or too “stressed out”, and “accidentally” take “Christ” out of “Christmas? I just don’t like that “X”. Recently, I found a painting that has vivid colors of the Season. In it Santa is standing next to the fireplace in a darkened room lit by a single candle. The children must have wanted to give Santa a little light for his most important activities that night. Santa has noticed the Nativity on the nearby table. He’s holding the porcelain Christ Child in the manger, deep in thought. A poem on the back of the picture sets the scene, and shares what I like to call “Santa’s Prayer”:

The Spirit of ChristmasBy Greg Olson 2009

By the magical light of a small Christmas candle, A little old man tries to carefully handle,

The small porcelain manger which serves as a bed,For the wee Baby Jesus to lay down His head.

In wonder he brings the manger up to his view,Smiles at the baby and whispers, “I love you!”

I love you for bringing this season of joy,I love you for growing to a man from a boy;

For being our Light and leading the way,For the Spirit which makes Christmas Day!

You’ve been my mentor, my model, my hero and guide,

Please continue to help me and stay by my side.

I’ve tried to follow your teachings and give as you gave,Reminding all to be kind and that it’s wise to behave.

Help me to serve others and bring them your Light,Especially, the children, please bless them tonight!

Some have so very little, scarce food for their table,You know how it feels – you were born in a stable!

Bless all their mothers and fathers with a knowledge that’s sure. The best gift they can give is their love,

strong and pure.

That’s the Spirit of Christmas when all’s said and done,

God’s gift of love, that came as His Son!

Then back to His mother the child is returned. The Nativity glows as the candle is burned.

In a wink the little old man slips quietly away,Some say he goes up the chimney and

climbs in a sleigh.

Whatever the case, His mission is clear – Give unto others, bringing love and good cheer.

He flies into the night and bids us adieu,Doing for others what Jesus would do!

Have a wonderful and blessed Christmas!

• On Jan. 14, 1860, the U.S. House of Representa-tives’ Committee of Thirty-Three submits a proposed

Snow Plow

A blonde driving a car became lost in a snow-storm. She didn't panic however, because she remembered what her dad had once told her. "If you ever get stuck in a snowstorm, just wait for a snow plow to come by and follow it." Sure enough, pretty soon a snow plow came by, and she started to follow it. She followed the plow for about forty-five minutes. Finally the driver of the truck got out and asked her what she was doing. And she explained that her dad had told her if she ever got stuck in a snow storm, to follow a plow. The driver nodded and said, "Well, I'm done with the Wal-Mart parking lot, do you want to follow me over to Best Buy now?"
