Horoscopes | Planetary Pathways | 16By Judi Vitale

Many years ago, back in the insanity of my “party” days, I was out one night with one of my friends. We were pretty loaded and I remember him rambling on about how there is no hell other than what we were living in. He claimed that when we died we were not sent to heaven or hell as a reward or a punishment based on how we lived our lives. His thought was we were in hell.

That conversation stuck with me for a long time. Ten years later I ran into him at 12 step meetings. A lot had changed for both of us. He had gotten married and found God. I had gotten married and found myself in divorce court. I was able to stay sober, but un-fortunately my friend did not. He ended his own life a few years later. I guess he never was able to change his belief in that he was in hell.

I don’t know what happens when we do make our transition, but I do know that my mind is capable of being in heaven or hell. It is my thoughts and feelings that make my reality.

Last night I saw a man at a park with 6 children having a great time playing. They were from the age of 2 to probably no more than 8. I looked at him and smiled and said you must be a man of infinite patience. He smiled back and replied “these are my grand kids and I get them for 3 weeks every summer!” I couldn’t help but feel the joy he was possessing. He was in heaven, so were his grand kids and he shared it with me. The beauty of heaven can be shared if we just open up to it.

May we each guide our thoughts to heaven and share with all around us.

~Namasté Clyde

“No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new.” ~ Steve Jobs

Poetry as a Spiritual Practice Illuminating the Awakened Woman

Edited by Catherine Ghosh with Sandra Marie Allagapen, Jamie Burgess, Jesse James, and Tammy T. Stone

What is it about the unique nature of poetry that draws fullness of expression from female hearts? How do poems become conduits to what is most sacred within us? This third book to emerge from the Journey of the Heart Poetry Project lifts the veil on these, and other mysterious subjects, surrounding women who spontaneously engage poetry writing as part of their spiritual practice.

In this reflective collection of personal essays, poems and meditations, women writers il-luminate the powerful role poetry plays in unleashing their spirits. Juxtaposing the waxing and waning of the moon phases, with cycles of concealing and revealing their own voices, the authors tap into an ancient theme to explore the mystical experience of birthing a poem.

All proceeds from the book will be donated to a nonprofit organization dedicated to empower-ing women to express themselves through writing.

Faith is taking one step at a time – believing what wecan’t always see. We have no idea where life will lead us,but let’s spend the time we do have becoming who we trulywant to be.

As much as we need to put effort into ourselves, I don’tthink works alone can turn someone into the best personwe might envision for ourselves. We need something else tolean on, to fully trust in to help guide us along the way.Having a strong spiritual connection has been the true icingon the cake.

Staying connected to God has taken my life to a wholenew level of peace and balance. We cannot rely just on ourown willpower and works to change, so I encourage every-one to lean on the transforming love of God to supply whatwe don’t always get through the day.

Believe in your ability to change. You and God are theonly ones who know how to take care of you. Let us all livea life full of purpose and passion and most of all peace. Ibelieve that if each of us developed into the person Godgifted us to be, the world would be a different place to live.

“Hell and heaven are within you. The doors are very close: with the right hand you can open one, with the left hand you can open another. With just a change of your mind, your being is transformed -- from heaven to hell and from hell to heaven. This goes on continuously. What is the secret? The secret is whenever you are unconscious, whenever you act un-consciously, without awareness, you are in hell; whenever you are conscious, whenever you act with full awareness, you are in heaven. If this awareness becomes so integrated, so consolidated, that you never lose it, there is no hell for you; if unconsciousness becomes so consolidated, so integrated, that you never lose it, there is no heaven. Fortunately uncon-sciousness can never become so consolidated; a part always remains conscious.”

SELF-REALIZATION FELLOWSHIP 2016 WORLD CONVOCATION - AUGUST 7-13

THE KRIYA YOGA TEACHINGS OF PARAMAHANSA YOGANANDA

THOUSANDS CONVENE IN LOS ANGELES FOR ANNUAL WEEK-LONG EVENT FEATURING YOGA MEDITATION

AND INSPIRATIONAL TALKS

LOS ANGELES — Yoga meditation provides us, in the words of Paramahansa Yogananda, a way to “stand unshaken midst the crash of breaking worlds.” From the most mundane human problems to overwhelming so-cial ills, spiritual teachers have long concurred that the first step to creating any kind of stability is through one’s own cultivation of inner peace. As four thousand yogis from nearly 40 countries convene in downtown Los Angeles this August for the annual Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) Convocation – a week-long immersion in the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda – col-lective meditation and fellowship affirm not only the potential for one’s own spiritual resilience, but a spiritual “strength in numbers.” The 2016 SRF World Convocation, which takes place at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel from August 7 to 13, provides a unique opportunity for spiritual communion and practical in-struction for attendees hailing from the United States to Congo to Brazil to India – including a mix of inspirational talks, group meditations and a chance to connect with their peers. Among the evening classes at this year’s SRF Convocation is “Embracing Our Spiritual Resilience,” a talk that provides guidance on how to meet challenging situations from a center of spiritual resilience, understanding, and an awareness of the indestructible presence of one’s divinity within.

here are many ideas of heaven. Some people work to build a ‘heaven on earth,’ seek to go to a sky realm after death, or seek to create heaven within their own

psyche. These are all beautiful. Our ancestors also had a concept of heaven that lives on today in many of the shamanic traditions around the world.

All shamanic cultures believe in the physical world and the spiritual world. In many of these, the spiritual world is believed to have different places that a person can interact with. The spiritual world might have layers over each other like an egg, or it might be composed of moving, interacting spheres, each of which are a place in themselves as well as a place with many layers. I have a tendency to think of all worlds, including ours, as these spherical places that are connected and have multiple layers to them.

My ancestors passed on to me the belief that there was a great tree that connected three categories of these spheres. The ‘underworld’ spheres exist amongst the tree’s roots. The ‘middle world’ made popular by Tolkien and others, consisted of other worlds at the tree’s trunk level. In the branches existed the ‘upper realms.’ Earth is a ‘middle world’ sphere. In middle world spheres, a balance of opposite polarities is required to exist in a stable, healthy way. This is why we have light and dark, health and illness, procreation and death, feast and fam-ine, et cetera. Of course, by being polarities, these are by necessity degrees of the same energy continuum, not

opposites at all until they are undivided. It is the balance and interaction of these spheres and layers that supports the existence of creation and allows for health to exist. This is why, for shamanic practitioners, it is vital that we understand these spheres and are able to work with and manipulate their balance.

When someone dies they pass through a gateway into the spirit world. By dying to one world you are born into another. Thus birth and death are the same thing. This is why our funerals are full of hard crying for the first three days and the rest are spent in celebration.

Shamanic traditions around the world have different ideas on what will happen at death. It is my opinion that there is no one path in death just as there is no one path in life. Perhaps you want to guide your descendants. You’ll probably go to the world of the ancestors to help from there. Maybe you’re full of guilt, self-hatred or shame. You just might go to a hell sphere, where you will stay until you’ve managed to release that. Perhaps you’re going to be a guide afterwards. Then you might go to an upper sphere. That is, you might go to ‘heaven.’

You might also simply choose not to play the game anymore and choose destruction, returning to Source, but that’s for another day. The trick to any and all of this is the same. You must be aware that you have died, and you must be able to direct yourself. Otherwise, you are traveling an unknown road with other travelers on it. Your imagination can provide bountiful examples of what might happen in that situation.

There are ‘paradise earth’ realms, too, and all sorts of beautiful things in various shamanic traditions. When I speak of ‘heavenly worlds,’ however, I’m usually speaking about a place in an upper world, the group of places that are in the branches of the trees. In shamanic practice, this is where you can journey to find guidance, support, views and help for global matters, and assistance in fulfilling life paths. Though the beings in the lower upper realms are earth bound in the sense that they choose to continue to work on what’s happening here on earth and the people living here, the beings in the places further up the tree are not always like this. For this reason, in working with these worlds, you will want to remember that their goals are not so much human survival and comfort but the fulfillment

of the soul (the plan) of the Creator. There are also all the places on the way. You know,

in between worlds where one might go en route to some-where else. Fun stuff, right?

So, let’s say you died. Assuming that you were conscious of your death and current situation and you had worked out all of your energetic kinks that might limit your options, where would your spirit probably go (notice I said spirit, not soul)? A good way to figure that out would be to check in with yourself. Are you full of self-condemnation, hatred, anger, resentment, shame, rage? Regardless of where you wind up, it will match those vibrations. So seriously, if you can’t get rid of that problem on your own, you might want to get that looked at by your local shamanic practitioner or other healer you trust. There are ‘hell’ realms where people can ‘burn off’ these vibratory patterns, though not all are hot! Another question to ask yourself is what do you really want? Does the perfect life look like an endless earthly paradise? You’re looking to seek a middle world place. Do you miss your dead relatives and want to see them again, or do you have concerns about your children’s futures after you pass? That’s probably going to be a root world. Are you not particularly concerned with the earth, its inhabit-ants, or your own desires, but have a strong adoration of Source? Then you might be looking at either an upper world existence or returning to Source, which of course is the path of destruction of the soul.

I do most of my personal work for myself in an up-per realm because that’s where I seem to fit best and where I find the spirits that I consider my family. In these places the inhabitants don’t seem to have a personal willpower. Their decisions, feelings, et cetera, are about the whole and less about the self. In fact, since it’s these folks (including the angels) who maintain the structure, balance and movement of the spheres, they must not act of their own accord or else literally offset the balance of all creation. Still, for some of us, the love of that which is higher is so strong that we don’t mind making sacrifices like this in order to do the will of the one that we answer to, whoever that might be.

For those who envision ‘heaven’ as a place where they can play golf all day, they’re probably better suited for a middle world sphere.

So what are you seeking with your thoughts? Your desires? Your feelings? Your actions?

Regardless of what you find I’m confident it’s going to be exactly what you’re seeking.

e live in a world of polarity, where we base our ex-

By Randi Botnick

It is of utmost importance to keep your mind open to all possibilities and give it time. It takes some time to change course and move in a new direction.

periences, l ikes and dislikes, desires and goals on comparisons. Our opinions of better/worse, fun/boring, rich/poor, etc. all come out of our experiences and our awarenesses.

At its origin, earth was contrived this way so that we, Divine be-ings, could have an in-finite number of options as to how we chose to shape our lives. When we see or feel something that is uncomfort-able or not within our wanting, we have the impetus to choose dif-ferently and the power to change the experience. Over the course of history, living in dense, heavy physical energies, we were not able to feel or remember that power, which often resulted in feeling victimized by events and situa-tions. Earth felt like some kind of punishment – a banishment from God and Heaven.

The method for creating Heaven on earth is a simple one: rescind all judgments and merely become aware.

The energies on Earth have become lighter over the last fifty years, and the veil between this physical world and the spiritual one from which we have all come is thinner. Human beings are changing as well. DNA is shifting and new strands are activating, so

that more of our soul is accessible. It is said that even just twenty years ago only about 10% of our soul incarnated into the body. Now it is said that 25% of the entirety of our soul is in the body.

This allows us to access deeper parts of our higher knowledge and the power that comes from it. No longer do we need to believe in ourselves as victims. As we tap into that part of us that is pure Spirit and Divinity, we tap into our ability to create… to manifest… the reality we choose to live in. We are capable of perceiving that this life can be positive and meet all our needs. We are able to have heaven here on earth.

Along with this choice, is the understanding that everyone else is also capable of making his and her own choices. We are each here to express ourselves in whatever way suits our individual personalities (some do this more consciously than others). And there are an infi-nite number of possibilities here on Earth, this planet of free will.

The method for creating Heav-en on earth is a simple one: re-scind all judgments and merely become aware. It is from this place

of awareness that we can focus on our wants and desires, those things that fill our hearts with Love, instead of on what is irritating – or worse. Focusing on our heart’s desires creates the cir-cumstances necessary to perceive heaven.

God, the Source of All There Is, has filled Earth with memories of Heaven. They are all here for us to partake in so we can remember who we really are and where

we really came from. A warm sun, the power of crystals, the most amazing chocolaty desert, a motorcycle ride down a country road, mind-blowing sex, puppies and kittens… all of the things that raise the awareness of joy in our five senses are little bits of Heaven here on earth.

(As I write this I am aware that not everyone will have the same responses to the things that my heart warms to. And that’s per-fectly fine. That is, exactly, the result of free will, which constitutes different personalities and predi-lections.)

Follow this step-by-step ap-proach to actualizing your desires

into reality so life becomes more positive and heart-felt:

First, decide who you want to be, how you want to express that, and what you want to attract into your life. Second, connect with your higher Self, the part of you that enters through the area just below the back of your neck and settles in your heart. Concretely state to your Higher Self what you want to pull into your life. Then, ask your Higher Self, the part that knows your highest Truth, what it wants.

It is of utmost importance to keep your mind open to all possibilities and give it time. It takes some time to change course and move in a new direction. Ad-ditionally, don’t expect a direct, verbal answer from this part of your Self. Instead, keep your eyes open and notice what comes into your life. Stay aware of the people, situations, opportunities, suggestions and gifts that are attracted to you.

Heaven On Earth

t may be that there is no concept more disputed than that of heaven. In its broadest sense it is generally accepted that it is an other-worldly place or state of being where we experience peace, contentment and

One Buddhist’s Perspective On HeavenBy Mark S. Kacik

Ihappiness as a reward for a good life.

But, it means different things to different people, and within any tradition there may not even be two people with identical perspectives. That’s because we’re all on a spiritual path of one degree or another. We are taught, we have experiences, we’re exposed to other concepts, and all the while come the whisperings of truth from within. Everyone’s concept of an afterlife is different and I believe none are wrong. It’s important to accept our differences.

There I experienced community like I have seen nowhere else on earth. I witnessed peace, content-ment and happiness in nearly ev-eryone. There was a predominant freedom from greed.

For me, the concept of heaven has evolved over my life as it probably has for most. I was raised Catholic and remember my childhood impression of heaven as a place in the clouds with angels, saints in white robes and in the presence of a loving white-bearded god. That gradually morphed into some kind of bodiless “retreat” of sorts. Then, in my late teens a quest for deeper spiritual-ity ignited and led me through several stages ending at an agnostic stage — a belief that there is some kind of afterlife that we are unable to comprehend with our limited knowledge. Although my practice is now fundamentally

Buddhist, I still hold a level of agnosticism.I am trained in the sciences, and that in combination

with my personality leaves me with the need for substan-tiation in my beliefs. My training and personality steer me to be careful in drawing conclusions. The dilemma I faced in coming to terms with heaven should be obvious. Other than near-death experiences there are no facts to hang onto. Yes, there are psychics and mediums but I have not personally experienced those. It seems to be all about faith — and listening within.

I have been fortunate enough to have been exposed to a number of Buddhist traditions and teachers in both Asian and Western countries and can offer a singular Buddhist perspective.

Buddhists believe in rebirth. According to the ac-complished masters who have seen into past and future lives, we have previously existed in infinite lives, and will do so in the future as well. The quality of our next life is highly tied to an accumulation of good or bad karma. Karma results from our good or bad deeds and stays with us. When we help others, good karma results and follows you. Bad karma follows you in a similar way as in other traditions sinning follows a person. As you exit this life, the state of your karma influences the quality of your next life. Buddhists believe that meditation raises conscious awareness to a level in which we can overcome inherent greed, anger and delusion and then are able to live virtuous lives free of bad karma.

This life is the afterlife of your previous life, or so say Buddhists. Therefore, this is heaven — especially if one has accumulated good karma and was born into favorable conditions. By the same reasoning, this would be hell for those with negative karma. All we have to do is watch the news and see the living hell of those enduring extreme suffering in war zones to understand that life can be hell. Continued on page 18

What To Expect In Heaven By Charles McAlpine

Tthing can happen.

Magic is all around. As you think a thought, every-thing around you begins to move and shift in order to align with that thought. If what you imagine or desire is large or requires a big stage, then people and things appear just as you need them. They will bring you gifts, insights, opportunities and more. They will offer to assist you in creating your dream. Sometimes they will offer ways to either simplify or make your vision more complex. All as a part of the magic of Heaven.

For those who prefer to do things on their own, they have it their way too. Heaven values hard work and dedication as much as it does magic. The people and things around them will still realign themselves and be ready for them if they choose. But they will let them make the first move. They are happy to be a cheering section that marvels at their tenacity; yet ready at a moment’s notice to pitch in and assist.

The art in Heaven tells stories, it opens and stirs emotions. It expands the imagination, and exposes our soul to all those who are present.

There is, of course, entertainment in Heaven. All forms of music, art and dance. So much that it be-comes obvious that everyone in Heaven is an artist of some type, even those who think that there is not an artistic bone in their body. They don’t see or call what they do art, but everyone else around them does. Art is such an important part of the fabric of Heaven. The smallest child to the oldest of souls adds some-thing unique to the tapestry of heavenly art. The art in Heaven tells stories, it opens and stirs emotions. It expands the imagination, and exposes our soul to all those who are present.

There are animals in Heaven too. All sorts of animals. Those we adopt and make part of our fam-ily and those that we admire from a distance. Even those we are afraid of. You see, in Heaven animals are often the easiest triggers for many of our emotions. Unconditional Love, fear and compassion are just some of the emotions that animals help us access. Think of animals in Heaven as mini-ambassadors to our emotions.

Let’s not forget the food? Such delicious and delec-table delights everywhere. And in every type of cuisine you can imagine. Those you have known your entire life and those you’ve never heard of. There are so many choices of food in heaven that you could never

try them all. Well, at least it seems that way at first. Those are the things you anticipated about

Heaven. Yet, once you are there, you understand that there are things in Heaven that are a bit of a surprise. Maybe even shocking.

There is still sorrow and grief. Anger, hurt and disappointment are there too. In fact, to your surprise, violence and war exist in Heaven. These were things that you were hoping would never make it into Heaven. These are experiences that, in your way of thinking, are not allowed in the utopia called Heaven.

But each Being, no matter how large or small, young or old, has free will in Heaven. It is their choice how to experience the gifts and graces that Heaven offers. You see, that is how loving it is in Heaven. God/Goddess/All-That-Is accepts each one without condition. Those who express violence, hatred, fear and manipulation are part of a continuum. Their choices have assisted in the evolution of Heaven into the magical place that it is.

In fact these emotions are a part of our own con-tinuum too. These exist within each one of us to some degree or another. We allow them to grow by ignor-ing them or judging them as being separate from us. They are part of our own evolution. If we can accept them in ourselves, then we find our balance. When we don’t, we create a wall of separation from them. We think that if we can’t see them then we can pretend they don’t exist.

We imagine and create a future place where we never have to look at or think of them again. But that is not how Heaven works. It accepts us completely. It takes us whole. Exactly as we are. Even when we try to hide or cover up those things that make us uncom-fortable. Heaven gives us the opportunities to come to peace with them. It has to... Because even if we have forgotten who we are; Heaven never does.

Heaven is now. It is everywhere and anywhere and it recognizes you and what you are. It knows you are an extension of All-That-Is and that makes Heaven your Home.

Planetary PathwaysBy Judi Vitale

ARIESMarch 21-April 20

Tune into your inner wisdom in June, as Neptune has several magical messages for you. An important inspira-tion you may have forgotten about might re-emerge. Pay attention this time. Primo opportunities for partnership will bring September in with a blessed bang! Don’t settle for the first thing that comes along.

TAURUSApril 21-May 20

Your urge to merge will explode after the full moon at the start of summer. If you’re not paired off already, you’ll be looking for love, passion and long conversations that roll deep into the night. Saturn’s station in mid-August will test your capacity for full and true intimacy.

GEMINIMay 21-June 20

Sharpen your communication skills in June, espe-cially in close relationships. A misunderstanding could collapse plans for an excellent early summer gathering. Saturn’s forward move in August forces a decision about the status of an old flame. Curb your not-so-inner flirt and avoid a pile of potential problems and unnecessary drama.

CANCERJune 21-July 22

You shine in summer, and with Mars in your house of fun and games until early August, you can expect plenty of action on the social scene. Jupiter might encourage you to take many little road trips, but don’t overbook. You’ll want to rest with family members when September comes.

LEO July 23-August 22

Make a long and beautiful wish list. By the time Venus enters your sign on July 12, you’ll be ready to attract all the people and situations needed to create one hot and spicy summer. Uranus in retrograde from the end of July reawakens ambitions for a bucket-list type trip.

Summer 2016

VIRGO August 23-September 22

Reap the best of what Jupiter has to offer as this fortune-bearing planet wraps up its visit to your sign. Mercury will take a backspin in late August to assist you in assessing this past year’s worth of opportunities. Make a wish that can enhance your future on September 1.

LIBRA September 23-October 21

Take time this summer to imagine what might hap-pen if all your dreams were to come true. Then, start making plans. Your imagination will run wild, especially from the beginning of August onward. On September 9, welcome Jupiter into your sign for a year of good luck and abundant opportunity.

SCORPIO October 22-November 21

You’ll calm down when Mars ends its long retrograde June 29, but the pressure won’t lift entirely until it leaves your sign August 2. Meanwhile, be aware that you just might be as demanding as people say you are. Vent ex-cess energy with plenty of wild and wonderful physical activity.

SAGITTARIUS November 22-December 20

Things might not be as bad as they seem. Keep re-peating that every few minutes as you slog out another summer dealing with Saturn’s heavy workload and ri-diculous restrictions. Travel when the sun hits Leo in late July, but look out for Mercury retrograde. Traffic snarls begin August 30.

CAPRICORN December 21-January 19

Your ambitions to rule the universe continue to rise, as you kick off the summer with a tsunami of confidence and visionary drive. Jupiter’s connection with Pluto in your sign will be utterly inspirational. Love will interrupt you from mid-June through early July. Pretty Venus barks out your orders: “Pucker up.”

AQUARIUS January 20-February 19

You’ll be working too hard to think about summer fun, at least until Venus enters Leo July 12. At that point, expect romantic moments that make this a summer you won’t soon forget. Uranus warns you to check out your vehicle before taking it on a road trip. Be prepared!

PISCES February 20-March 20

This could be the summer of long-lost love, as Jupiter and Mercury create the mood for amorous connections. A long-lost lover, or even someone you thought was “just a friend” could emerge and make you re-think your relationship status. Don’t tramp on anybody’s heart, but do explore your own.

Summer 2016Page 18 The Journey

In 2008 I traveled the back-roads of Asia in search of a deeper understanding of self, to advance my medi-tation practice, and to explore Buddhist traditions. Part of that journey took me into remote mountain villages high and deep in the rugged Himalayas near the Tibetan border. The people in these tiny villages almost exclusively practice Tibetan Buddhism, and in a most devoted manner. Fundamental to their practice is the concept of “Bodhicitta,” the principle to always put the needs of others before yours in a heartfelt manner. In these villages nearly everyone practices Bodhicitta from their earliest childhood days and it makes all the difference in relations. There I experi-enced community like I have seen nowhere else on earth. I witnessed peace, contentment and happiness in nearly everyone. There was a predominant freedom from greed. Sound familiar? This sounds like some sort of heaven, doesn’t it?

Mark S. Kacik - Continued from page 12

Live in the moment and live with your heart. Do your inner work and goodness will come. Most all traditions tell us this. Then, call it heaven, call it bliss, or call it happiness — names don’t matter.

Summer 2016

Sure, there was no absence of suffering from our destination of old age, sickness and death. But the perspective that living a virtuous life can give us a degree of heaven here on earth is something to think seriously about. And, many great Buddhist meditation masters promise that if we discipline our minds over many years, and even lifetimes, we can overcome all suffering.

So, from a Buddhist perspective, this life — here and now — is the afterlife of your previous life. We are in heaven! That is, if we’ve done the work to free ourselves of distorted views like greed and hatred. We are in hell of suffering if not.

Many will dispute this perspective. And the ex-planation as to why so many suffer a hellish life is complex. But what’s to lose? Live in the moment and live with your heart. Do your inner work and goodness will come. Most all traditions tell us this. Then, call it heaven, call it bliss, or call it happiness - names don’t matter.
