MRS HUDSON'S ANNUAL DINNER PARTY JANUARY 24TH 2015

a report by

DENNIS J DUGGAN (BR, HONS) Our chosen venue for this popular annual event was once again The Royal

Oak Hotel, Welshpool. Deerstalkers present: Roy, Joan, Phil, Heidi, Dennis, Michael, Martin,

Peter Guests present: Rachel, Stephanie, Gwen Guest Artiste: Jayne Robinson (Violin) Apologies: Ian, Colin & Jenny, Eurwyn, Colin The evening began with a Deerstalkers meeting over drinks at 6.30pm.

Items discussed included a date for the film show at Baskerville, a possible

event at Martin's bookshop, purchase of tea towels and pens, a second

games evening. At 7pm we moved to our table, we were the only diners in the Green

Room which we had to ourselves. A member of staff took our orders, we

all chose from the ordinary menu. Roy gave a toast to members and

friends, and photographs were taken.

5

The food and service proved to be excellent, and there was a good buzz

of laughter and conversation throughout the meal. At my end of the table

the main topics were cars and books. While we waited for the main course,

Joan made the traditional reading of 221b, a poem by Vincent Starret. Martin and Michael had prepared a Cops & Robbers quiz, which entailed

choosing one of three characters for each question. Most of us did pretty

well with the robbers section, but it proved surprisingly difficult to know

which policeman dealt with which case. As usual the quiz was won by

Stephanie, a non-member! Whilst waiting for the puddings I gave toasts to absent members,

Sherlock Holmes, Dr Watson, Mrs Hudson and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.. Next came Jayne's violin recital, and we and we heard two pieces of

music beautifully played. It was slightly unfortunate that three men had

infiltrated our room. They occupied a table in the corner, and talked quite

loudly while Jane was playing. However, those at the other end of the table

might not have been aware of this slight problem. At one point I was

tempted to ask them to be quiet, but - probably wisely - decided that might

have been risky. Next we gathered round the piano for our music hall singalong. We sang

the choruses to lots of old favourites, including Champagne Charlie, When

Father Papered The Parlour and If You want To Know The Time etc. We

finished with Lily of Laguna, and it seems to have become a tradition that I

do a solo! (I felt that this year I did much better than the previous two

years, though on the way home Stephanie told me my singing still left

much to be desired) By 10pm it was all over, and after I had offered a vote of thanks to Roy

and Joan we made our separate ways to the bar and paid for our meals. Personally I thought it was one of the best Mrs Hudson's dinner parties

ever, and hope that those present will agree with me.

Discovery of an unpublished Sherlock Holmes story

Reported by Ian Corke BR (Hons.)

It was reported, in the Daily Record, that Walter Elliot, 80, had found a

1,300 word tale starring the famous sleuth in a collection of short stories

written for a local bazaar.

The reason for the bazaar was that a wooden bridge in the Scottish town of

Selkirk had been destroyed by flood waters in 1902 and the three-day event

was arranged to raise funds for a new one.

A collection of short stories by locals called "The Book o' the Brig" was on

sale to raise funds and Conan Doyle, who likes visiting the area, was

persuaded to make a contribution.

Walter Elliot spotted the story entitled –

“Sherlock Holmes: Discovering the Border Burghs and, by deduction, the

Brig Bazaar”.

It was in a pamphlet given to him more than 50 years ago and which he

rediscovered in his attic.

Many local dignitaries contributed in one way or another to the bazaar and

on the third day Conan Doyle opened proceedings.

At just 1300 words it can hardly be described a short story which one

would normally expect to run to some 10,000 words. The Scots would

more accurately have described it as a “wee” tale.

It was, and still is, quite common for celebrities to write something or

attend an event in connection with a cause that they support, and Conan

Doyle was no exception.

17

Before getting too excited about it one needs to remember that the famous

author probably penned this in a few minutes and didn’t see it as one of his

great literary works. He almost certainly did similar things for other causes.

Had Walter got the original correspondence as written by Conan Doyle

then a trip to an auction house would be a good idea but as it is the

pamphlet is of little or no monetary value, but perhaps I’m being too

cynical.

As for the literary merit of the wee tale I leave it for you to judge.

Miscarriages of Justice (Arthur and George) Ian Corke BR (Hons.)

ITV has commissioned a three part drama “Arthur & George” starring

Martin Clunes, from Buffalo Pictures, which will air on Monday 2nd

March

at 9pm.

How true to the real story the series will be is open to question but for

those who are interested in the facts I give a synopsis below.

Solicitor George Edalji (March 1876 - 17 June 1953) was an Anglo-

Indian, born in the West Midlands who in 1903 was convicted of

maliciously wounding a horse and sending menacing letters.

As a result of Conan Doyle’s campaign Edalji was subsequently

acquitted. It was partly as a result of him establishing the innocence of

George Edalji that the Court of Appeal was formed in 1907.

Many years later Enoch Knowles, a labourer from Darlaston, was

sentenced at Stafford Assizes to three years penal servitude for sending

menacing and obscene letters through the post to various women.

Knowles also admitted that it was him, and not Edalji, who had sent out

the letters in 1903. Edalji ended his days in Welwyn Garden City where he

died of a coronary in 1953.

This was not the only case in which Conan Doyle helped to win an

acquittal. That of Oscar Slater is perhaps better known.

Oscar Slater (8 January 1872 - 31 January 1948) was a German Jew who

about 1894 moved to London to avoid military service. He had used

various names before settling on Slater and was of bad character. He had

previously been charged with offences of assault and malicious wounding

but had been acquitted.

Around 1899 he moved to Scotland where he claimed to be respectable

and employed in various legitimate enterprises.

However, as far as the Glasgow constabulary was concerned he was,

amongst other things, a gangster, pimp and burglar.

19

In December 1908 Marion Gilchrist of Glasgow, an 83 year old spinster,

was beaten to death. The motive appeared to be robbery but the culprit was

disturbed by a neighbour and only escaped with a broach.

For reasons which are unclear, but maybe he thought the police were

looking for him, Slater decided, a week after the murder, to make his way

to New York.

The police applied for his extradition on what was very flimsy evidence

and unlikely to succeed. However, Slater decided to return of his own

volition perhaps because he had not been involved in the murder and

expected to be acquitted even if charged.

He was soon to be disappointed, and despite the fact that several

witnesses provided him with an alibi, and it was established that he had

announced his intention to visit the USA long before the murder he was

committed for trial .

He was convicted by a majority verdict and in May 1909 was sentenced

to death but there was considerable unease at the verdict and after a petition

the death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment.

Slater had served just over 18 years in prison when In 1912 Conan Doyle

published “The Case of Oscar Slater”. Essentially the identification

evidence was fleeting and it was alleged that the identity parade included 9

off-duty policemen.

By this time several establishment lawyers and politicians had become

convinced of Slater’s innocence and his conviction was overturned in 1928

on the grounds that the judge had misdirected the jury with regard to his

previous convictions. Perhaps a more accurate view was that the police

were determined to “get” Slater who they correctly believed was a villain

but did not have sufficient evidence to secure a conviction before a jury. It

was later alleged, by a police officer at the time, John Trench, that this led

them to withhold evidence which would have proved Slater’s innocence.
