Cook This Tidbits examines grasses around the world. There are many varieties of grasses found from the freezing North and South Poles to many deserts and the lands along the sultry hot equator. Grasses belong in the plant family botanists call Poa- ceae. Grasses are considered flowering plants, but the flowers are not showy as they are on, for example, roses and sunflowers. This lack of showiness is due to the fact that grasses are wind pollinated and not pollinated by insects. The colorful blooms of most flowering plants are needed to attract pollinating insects. The grass family is very large, containing an estimat- ed 10,000 species worldwide. Over 1,000 species occur in North America. Grasses range widely in shape and size, ranging from golf course turf and lawn grass to wheat, corn, rice, sug- arcane and bamboo. • Grasses can be as short as the greens on a golf course and as tall as bamboo that can reach heights of 120 feet (40 m). Golfers around the world are thankful for the manicured greens that allow putts to roll precisely as in- tended. Pandas are thankful for the large bamboo forests they depend on for their sustenance. NOT JUST FOR MOWING (continued):• All of our cereal grains belong to the grass fam-ily, including wheat, rice, wild rice, corn, oats, bar-ley, millet and rye.• Some grasses can survive in very inhospitable places, from the tundra in the extreme north to the shifting sands in the harshest deserts and even where salt water is present. • Grasses were prevalent across the Great Plains of North America and proved instrumental in mak-ing the region a great cattle-grazing area. Since about 1880, much of the native grasslands have been dissected by agriculture. One of the last rem-nants of this vast grassland area untainted by agri-culture is the Flint Hills region in eastern Kansas. Ecologists refer to this ecosystem as tallgrass prai-rie, and preservation of a piece of it is assured in the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve near Strong City, Kansas.• Grains are one of the four primary food groups identified in the nutritional guidelines posted by the U. S. Department of Agriculture. The recom-mended daily grain intake for adults is 5-8 ounces (141.7-226.8 g) with at least half of this intake be-ing whole and not refined grain. The USDA web-site, www.choosemyplate.gov, has good information on this subject. • The connection between grains, carbohydrates and obesity is a hot topic of discussion among nutrition experts in the United States. The Grains Food Foundation (GFF) notes that whole grains are important sources of iron, a nutrient critical to production and release of energy in the body. The GFF further notes that the three nutrients selenium, potassium and magnesium found in whole grain foods collectively may help boost immunity, lower blood pressure and prevent heart disease and some forms of cancer.• Exotic grasses introduced into an area where they are not native can sometimes set the stage for an ecological disaster. Cheatgrass that is native to the Mediterranean region of Europe was first observed in North America near Denver, Colo-rado, in the late 1800s. Allegedly, it entered as a contaminant of agricultural seed. This grass is now a troublesome pest across much of arid western North America and rated by the USDA as a highly invasive species.• Not only is bamboo food for pandas, it is a ver-satile construction material. Its uses include floor-ing, fencing, decking, support poles, paneling, edg-ing and conduits (piping) to transport water.

• Bamboo is also becoming known in the bicycle world as a raw material for bicycle frames. Bam-boosero is a company dedicated to using bamboo to

Eating More and Losing Weight?

Please call 303.663.2287 (CATS) for more information or visit www.catspecialist.com

My older cat recently has had a ravenous appetite, begs for food, and he is still losing weight. “Herbie” is very active, plays like a kitten and he has begun to caterwaul at night. What is wrong with “Herbie”?

The most common disease problem affecting older cats with these clinical signs is hyperthyroidism. A blood panel with thyroid tests (T4, and fT4ED) is needed for diagnosis. The best news is that this endocrine disease can be CURED! The Cat Specialist doctors have advanced training in nuclear medicine, using 131I to destroy the tumor cells that cause this disease. One treatment cures >96% of affected cats. If your cat is having these problems call our hospital.

goldenspikeroong.com Feline Friendly Veterinary Care #1The most popular pet in the American home is the cat. In 2007 pet ownership studies showed that there are 13% more cats than dogs living with families. With all its style, elegance and intelligence the cat has a lower social status than the dog in many households. Sadly this translates into poorer health care for felines. One of the biggest myths about domestic cats is they can take care of themselves and don’t need much medical care. Yes, cats do have 9 lives but without our help many die needlessly. In the last 40 years Veterinary Medicine has effectively doubled the life span of cats by: #1 vaccination – preventing many killing diseases, #2 parasite control – deworming and insect control, #3 bringing the domestic cat indoors – the outdoor lifestyle is dangerous.

In 2011, dogs represented 59% of veterinary visits and cats only 39%. Why? The 2011 Bayer Brakke study showed that feline owners had 3 limiting factors that prevented them from coming to veterinarian. 1. Inadequate understanding of the need for regular preventive health visits other than for vaccination. Wellness visits are the best investment in preventing future costly problems.

The remedy: more owner education by veterinary clinics, read books – for example Cats for Dummies and cautiously consult the internet.

2. Resistance to bringing a cat to a clinic because of the distress caused by placing a cat into a carrier and making the trip to the clinic. This factor was reflected dramatically by the fact that 40% of cats had not been to a veterinarian within the past year, compared with only 15% of dogs.

The remedy: get a cat friendly carrier (a top loader), have the carrier out in the house so it is perceived by the cat as ordinary, take your cat for car rides to get him used to traveling, and make sure the clinic you choose is a cat friendly clinic that handles cats well.

3. The cost of veterinary care. Since cats hide their illnesses the perception with many owners is that cats need less care.

The remedy: establish a monthly health savings account for your pets. Also, pet health insurance and wellness insurance is available to offset large expenses. Many of the plans are an exceptional value and work well.

Opals

Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. For more information on gemstones or jewelry of any kind call 303.841.2666

Travel to Australia to find the worlds finest opals where 95% of them are found in the arid, remote outback deserts. The ancient Australian aborigine lore taught that the Creator came down to earth on a rainbow and the very spot where his foot touched the ground the stones started gleaming in all the colors of the rainbow and the opal was born. There are a variety of opals but all share one characteristic: they shine and sparkle in a constantly varying play of colors described by gemologists as “opalising”. This color play makes the opal attractive, fascinating and valuable. In 1960s a team of Australian scientists analyzed opals with an electron microscope and discov-ered that small spheres from silica gel causes interference and the refraction of light resulting in “opalising”. Pliny, the famous Roman author, called opal a gemstone which combines the best possible characteristics of the most beautiful of gem-stones: the fine sparkle of Almandine, the shining purple of Amethyst, the golden yellow of Topaz, and the deep blue of Sapphire, ”so that all colors shine and sparkle together in a beautiful combi-nation“.

A: Chances are the door just needs a bit of adjustment. Over time, as houses settle and temperature or humidity changes warp the wood of a door or its frame, the door doesn’t open

or shut just right. Grab a helper and a prybar or hammer, and prepare to fix this door.

First, check the overall condition of the door, its frame and the surrounding hardware (the doorknob and latch, hinges and the hinge plates where they’re screwed into the door

frame). Make sure all of the hardware is screwed in properly and not loose or tearing away from the frame. Make sure

there is no visible damage or warping of the door or frame -- usually there isn’t, unless the door suffered a serious

calamity such as flood damage. If the overall condition checks out as good, adjusting the

hinges or shimming the door so it swings freely again is the likely course of action.

Shimming is a way of very slightly changing the angle at which a door is hung. You do this by adding a shim behind a door’s hinge to lift it slightly -- and then adjusting that angle up or down. Shim kits also are available at home-improve-

ment stores.Since the door’s angle has shifted slightly downward, first

try adjusting the top hinge on the door-frame side by simply screwing all the hinge screws in a half-turn or so. This alone

may lift the door just enough to even it out.If that doesn’t work, you can either unscrew the top hinge

and carefully shave away a paper-thin amount of the wooden frame in order to set the hinge slight back. Or, if

you don’t want to damage the frame, shim the lower hinge in order to lift the door upward.

Unscrew the frame side of the bottom hinge, as your helper holds the door steady. Insert a very thin shim piece (the kits are usually cut to size, or you can use a wafer-thin piece of plywood or even a playing card to shim, and trim yourself)

and place the hinge over the shim, using a power drill to drive the hinge screws through the shim into their usual

place.Shimming or adjusting the angle can take time and a few at-tempts. Be patient, and you’ll soon have your door swinging

freely.

HOME TIP: For doors that slightly scrape the floor as they open, place a rough piece of sandpaper underneath the

sticky area and open and close the door several times -- this might smooth out the bottom of the door just enough to end

the scraping.

• Native peoples in North America and Africa used grasses and other plants as the fibrous materi-al for weaving baskets. In the low country of South Carolina, descendants of West African slaves con-tinue the traditions of basket weaving using sweet grass that is common to coastal South Carolina. Native Americans in California are believed to have managed vegetation using periodic land fires to remove unwanted plant litter, trees and shrubs from stands of deergrass, a grass prized in basket

weaving.

• If you own or spend time around dogs you have probably observed them eating grass. Why do dogs eat grass? It’s a question that has plagued veterinarians for years, and there is no universally accepted answer. Some possible answers are that dogs simply like the taste of grass or that grass serves as a laxative by adding fiber to the dog’s diet. Veterinarians are generally unified in the be-lief that grass, untainted by pesticides, is not harm-ful to dogs.

• Two of the most important services rendered by grasses are those of a soil builder and a soil conser-vation agent. Oats, rye and ryegrass are often used as green manure and cover crops. A green manure crop is one that is grown and subsequently plowed under to build the soil. A cover crop is grown and left in place to flourish and prevent or reduce soil erosion.

• Grasses have been researched and used as agents to clean up former industrial sites with con-taminated soil. Specialists working with and refin-ing this technology refer to it as phytoremediation. Generally, soil pollutants are either taken up by plants and the plants harvested and treated to ren-der the pollutant-laden plant material harmless, or the pollutants are degraded to something harmless in the plants’ root zone. The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency recognizes this technology as viable in some environmental cleanup situations.

• Citronella is a fragrant grass found in southeast-ern Asia. It is the source of citronella oil used in soaps, medicines and perfumes.

• Now that you know more about grasses and the important roles they play in our lives, maybe you won’t grumble so much when it comes time to mow the lawn!

Ask the Dentistby Dennis L. Burgner, D.D.S.

Master, Academy of General Dentistry

Q. How did we arrive at today’s modern tooth cleaning products?

A. There is quite a long history of various dental “tools”.

Q. How long have we had toothbrushes?A. Longer than most of us can remember. The toothbrush

dates back to the Stone Age, when small twigs or sticks were mashed together to create a broader surface for cleaning around the teeth. The Chinese invented the first bristle toothbrush – in the 1490’s. Europe adopted the bristle toothbrush in the 17th century, and American colonial dentists encouraged its use.

In 1880 the first electric toothbrush appeared, but was not very effective. The Swiss invented the first effective electric toothbrush right after World War II ended. In 1961 the first cordless electric toothbrush was marketed and soon became popular. Today we have a nearly-unlimited variety styles, colors, sizes, and designs of toothbrushes.

Q. When is my t o o t h b r u s h worn out?

Q. Your toothbrush has “had it” when the bristles point every which way. Change your toothbrush every three months, before it gets to “every which way”.

Q. What about toothpaste? Q. Early civilizations concocted various powders used

to clean teeth. Ingredients included powdered fruit, ground up or burnt shells, sometimes mixed with honey and dried flowers. Other, less appetizing concoctions added rabbit heads, mice, lizard livers, and urine. (At least give them credit for being creative!) Sadly, many of these early toothpastes were highly abrasive or corrosive, which dissolved tooth anamel.

Toothpaste as we know it first came to market in the 1800’s. These early “modern” toothpastes included soap and chalk powders. The first toothpaste tube came on the scene in 1892. In 1956 Proctor and Gamble developed “Crest” toothpaste, which added flouride to fight cavities.

Q. Toothpicks?A. Toothpicks have been around for a long, long time. Ancient

drawings and texts mention small pointed devices used to clean food from the teeth. Some were carved from twigs or made from silver, gold, bronze or other available metals. Dentistry An Illustrated History states: “In one regard at least, upper-class Romans outdid hygiene-conscious people today: When guests were invited to dinner, they were provided not only with spoons and knives, but also with elaborately decorated toothpicks of metal, often of gold, which they took home with them. And it was considered quite proper to pick the teeth between each course of the meal!” (Now don’t you wish you had a box of those gold toothpicks?)

Don't Take a Vaca-tion from Investing

Summer is here — which means a vacation most likely isn’t far away. Whether you’re hitting the road, jumping on a plane or even enjoy-

ing a “staycation” at home, you’re prob-ably looking forward to some down time with your family. But not every aspect of your life should be relaxed. Specifically, you don’t want to take a vacation from investing — which means you need to become a diligent, year-round investor.

Here are a few suggestions that can help:

Keep on investing. Don’t head to the investment “sidelines” when the finan-cial markets experience volatility. You don’t want to be a nonparticipant when

things turn around because, historically, the early stage of any mar-ket rally is generally when the biggest gains occur. (Keep in mind that past performance of the market is not a guarantee of future results.) Keep learning. In just about any classroom, the best students are the ones who get the most out of their education and put their learning to the best use. And the same is true of the investment world: The more you know about the forces that affect your invest-ments’ performance, and about why you own the investments you do, the more likely you are to make the right moves — and the less likely you’ll be to make hasty and unwise decisions. Keep your focus on the long term. As an investor, you need to look past those events — such as natural disasters, recession fears and political instability abroad — that may have noticeable short-term effects on the financial markets but little impact over the longer term. So instead of making investment decisions based on today’s headlines, think about what you want your financial pic-ture to look like in 10, 20 or 30 years — and take the appropriate steps to help make that picture materialize. These steps include following a long-term, disciplined investment strategy that’s suit-able for your individual needs, making adjustments as time goes on and working with a professional financial advisor who knows your situation and can help you make the right choices. Keep looking for growth opportunities. To achieve your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement, you’ll need to own growth-oriented investments, such as stocks and other investments that contain equities. The percentage of your holdings devoted to stocks should be based on your risk tolerance, time horizon and proximity to retirement. But no matter what your situation, you want a portfolio that’s designed to help you meet your investment goals. Keep relying on “hardworking” investments. To help ensure your investments are working hard for you, choose those vehi-cles that can help you in multiple ways. For example, when you invest in a 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan, your money grows on a tax-deferred basis, which means it can accumulate faster than if it were placed in an investment on which you paid taxes every year. (Keep in mind that taxes are due upon withdrawal, and withdrawals prior to age 59½ may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty.) Plus, you typically fund your 401(k) with pretax dollars, so the more you put in each year, the lower your taxable income. Furthermore, with the choices available in your plan, you can create a good mix of investments.

Enjoy your vacation this summer. But no matter what the season, don’t take a break from investing. Your efforts may pay off nicely for you in the future.

The Gift of Hope Sometimes, the day to day monotony tends to get us down. It can feel like we are in a hamster wheel- running, and run-ning but never really getting anywhere. The prospect of a better tomorrow can alter our focus to something brighter, fueling the need to get off the endless track and set our sights on greatness.A more positive outlook may already be present; it is just something we need to seek, to pursue, and to always hope for. An extra push everyday can help us reach our goals and live a more productive and fulfilling life. Little acts such as smiling at a stranger, helping another with a heavy grocery load or waving at a neighbor can leave large impacts- you never know what obstacles someone is facing and what tiny gesture may change their outlook and give them hope. A piece of one of my favorite Emily Dickinson poems fits nicely: "Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul, and sings the tunes without the words, and nev-er stops at all." Finding hope can also mean pursing a fresh start. ---------------As always, please, please let me know if you want me to change the tune of my words or the direction or everything! I sincerely appreciate your feedback. My very best to you~

¥ On July 14, 1798, Congress passes the Sedition Act, which permitted the prosecution of individuals who voiced or printed what the government deemed to be malicious remarks about the president or gov-ernment of the United States.

¥ On July 11, 1804, Vice President Aaron Burr fa-tally shoots his long-time political antagonist, Al-exander Hamilton, in a duel. Burr shot Hamilton in the stomach, and the bullet lodged next to his spine. Hamilton, a Founding Father and first U.S. treasury secretary, died the next day.

¥ On July 9, 1877, the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club begins its first lawn tennis tour-nament at Wimbledon, then an outer suburb of Lon-don. Twenty-one amateurs showed up to compete in the Gentlemen’s Singles tournament, the only event.

¥ On July 10, 1925, in Dayton, Tenn., the so-called Monkey Trial begins with John Thomas Scopes, a young high-school science teacher, accused of teaching evolution in violation of a Tennessee state law. The law made it a misdemeanor to teach any theory that denied the story of the Divine Creation of man.

¥ On July 12, 1933, the first three-wheeled, mul-ti-directional Dymaxion car is manufactured in Bridgeport, Conn. Part aircraft, part automobile, it had wings that inflated and a tail fin. It had a steel chassis, a body made of ash wood, an aluminum skin and a painted canvas roof. The Dymaxion was designed to reach a speed of 120 mph and average 28 mpg.

¥ On July 15, 1941, master spy Juan Pujol Garcia, nicknamed “Garbo,” sends his first communique to Germany from Britain. The disinformation the dou-ble agent transmitted to Germany was fabricated by the British. In June 1944, he managed to convince Hitler that the D-Day invasion of Normandy was just a “diversionary maneuver.”

¥ On July 13, 1955, model and nightclub manger Ruth Ellis is executed by hanging in London for the murder of boyfriend David Blakely. She was the last woman to be executed in the United Kingdom. Ellis, 29, did not help her case when during her trial she stated, “It was obvious that when I shot him I intended to kill him.”

PUTTING YOUR AFFAIRS IN ORDER

The doctor, after an examination, sighed and said, "I've got some bad news. You have cancer, and you'd best put your affairs in order."

The woman was shocked, but managed to compose herself and walk into the waiting room where her daughter had been waiting.

"Well, daughter, we women celebrate when things are good, and we celebrate when things don't go so well. In this case, things aren't well. I have cancer. So, let's head to the club and have a martini."

After 3 or 4 martinis, the two were feeling a little less somber. There were some laughs and more mar-tinis. They were eventually approached by some of the woman's old friends, who were curious as to what the two were celebrating.

The woman told her friends they were drinking to her impending end.

"I've been diagnosed with AIDS."

The friends were aghast, gave the woman theircon-dolences and beat a hasty retreat.

After the friends left, the woman's daughter leaned over and whispered, "Momma, I thought you said you were dying of cancer, and you just told your friends you were dying of AIDS!

Why did you do that?"

"Because I don't want any of those women sleeping with your father after I'm gone."

And THAT, my friends, is what is called, "Putting Your Affairs In Order."
