Cook “Cold” is the word for the weather in most locations of North America during January. Let’s turn up the heat in this issue of Tidbits using water, gas, logs, electricity and more. Since the beginning of time, there has been a need to heat homes, buildings and more. The earliest type of indoor heating was an open fire. Fireplaces and wood stoves of many varieties were used worldwide. Still used in many modern and beautiful homes, fireplaces and stoves in developed countries now can be quite ef- ficient and home fashion statements as well. In contrast, in many third-world countries, an open fire burning in the middle of a room is used to provide heat, leading to smoke, ash and other problems inside. Scientists and inventors all over the world have ex- perimented with how to heat the indoors for many years. Different types of systems were developed with differ- ing degrees of success. • Starting before 100 AD, in the northern Roman Empire, a type of central heating known as hypocaust was used to conduct air heated by wood furnaces through empty spaces under floors and out of pipes in walls. Hypocaust literally means “fire beneath.” The systems were mainly used for private homes and public baths. turn the page for more!

TURN UP THE HEAT! (continued):• The Royal Monastery of Our Lady of the Wheel, founded in 1202 on the Ebro River in Spain, con-tains an excellent example of a type of central heat-ing. The Cistercian monks used river diversions combined with indoor wood-fired furnaces to heat the large building. • Fast-forward a bit in history, and Benjamin Franklin, a famous American of many talents, in-vented the Franklin Stove in the 1740s. His stoves heated double the space using less wood than fire-places and were equipped to take in fresh air and minimize smoke. Another inventor, David Rit-tenhouse, improved Franklin’s design with an L-shaped exhaust pipe. The stoves became popular all over America and Europe. • The Franklin stove and other wood stoves helped heat homes more efficiently since the stoves generated heat all around their iron bodies. They typically used one quarter as much wood for twice as much heat. They did present a safety challenge though; touching the stoves had disastrous effects. Today, many efficient wood stoves are being sold with modern safety features. • Also developed in the 1700s was the first hydro-logical system; as the word implies, it used water. The system was installed in Peter the Great’s Sum-mer Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia. It was the real forerunner of central heating, and soon the French, Swiss and British followed with their own water-based systems in the early 1800s. • An interesting early steam-heating system was developed by Angier March Perkins in England in 1830. The first of his systems to be installed was in the home of Governor of the Bank of England, John Horley Palmer. The reason Palmer wanted the system? So he could grow grapes in England’s cold climate!• When a Russian businessman of Polish descent, Franz San Galli, invented the traditional cast-iron radiator in about 1855, water-based heat really be-came popular. This invention contributed signifi-cantly to our modern heating systems. • The radiator system relied on a boiler located in the basement to heat water, and pipes carried the hot water to the remainder of the building. Many older homes still use these types of heating sys-tems. • With the discovery of electricity and the study of how to harness and use it, inventors started using their imaginations and brainpower to invent many appliances to improve living conditions. One of these important inventions was the electric heater, invented by Alexander Graham Bell. • Early electric heaters consisted of small metal boxes holding electric light bulbs. The boxes pro-

Question: What is the most common disease found in all animals

(humans included)?Answer: Dental Disease. The mouth is a source of yummy food for bacteria and viruses to thrive on. These micro-organisms commonly attack teeth causing decay & tooth reabsorption, gum infection (gingivitis), and disrupt supporting structures & bone (periodontal disease). Plaque and tartar are a mixture of food, saliva and micro-organisms that promote dental disease and tooth loss. Regular dry cat food with its very high carbohydrate contributes to dental disease.

Brushing, flossing, and regular preventive dental care are the answers to a healthy mouth in humans. Some dogs may allow daily brushing with a pet dental tooth product. This helps to decrease mouth bacteria, decrease tartar buildup and periodontal disease in the process. Cats are the masters at hiding dental disease and most owners don’t know their cat has a problem. Dental exams are part of a yearly health check-up and senior cats commonly need dental exams twice a year.

99% of cats won’t allow brushing. What can be done if you cannot actively brush your cat’s teeth?

Adding water disinfecting products to your cat’s water can help decrease the number of bacteria in the mouth, decrease tartar buildup, and decrease periodontal disease.

Having your cat eat dental diets may be the biggest help in preventive dental care because dental diets actually scrub the teeth surfaces with fiber. Regular dry cat foods do not clean teeth and they are actually like eating a candy bar because most dry foods are 25-50% carbohydrate.

Even with all the preventive measures, routine professional dental care is necessary to help your cat stay healthy. Dental disease is a major source of many internal infections that are spread from the mouth through the bloodstream to the heart, kidneys/bladder, liver, etc.. Thorough dental cleaning requires a short anesthetic because infected gums and teeth are very painful. The cleaning process requires a quiet patient and if extractions and gum surgery are necessary anesthesia is needed.

Your cat’s dental health is one of the most important aspects of long term cat care! February is Pet Dental Health Month so if you have been putting off your cat’s dental care this is an ideal time to get those teeth and gums healthy. Cat Specialist has dental specials during the month of February.

duced a comforting glow, and as the heat trans-ferred from the bulb to the metal, they got warmer and warmed the surrounding air. • These early heaters worked, but, of course, many inventors have improved on the heaters for generations. In 1905, engineer Albert Marsh dis-covered a metal alloy called chromel that proved to be a great material for making heating elements inside heaters. He became known as the father of the electrical heating industry. • Through the years, space heaters, as the small machines were called, made their way into homes. They worked great to heat the “space” where the family gathered. Fireplaces and wood stoves as well as furnaces with systems that pushed warm air from the basement were still employed as well. In colder climates, many wood furnaces were gradu-ally replaced with coal, then fuel oil, natural gas and propane. • The Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries saw many scientists, engineers and oth-ers inventing new machines for all kinds of needs. Forced air systems with ducts built through ceil-ings and floors used electric fans to distribute heat and came on the scene in about 1935, introduced by the Lennox Company. • HVAC systems (heating, ventilating and air-conditioning) have been around for quite a while. As far back as 1901, Alfred Wolff designed a large system for heating, cooling and humidity control at the New York Stock Exchange. The term “air-conditioning” was not used until Stuart Cramer, a textile engineer from North Carolina, coined the term in 1906. • Our options for heating today are many. We can have electric forced-air heat; ceiling or floor cable heating; natural gas, oil or propane heating; fire-places with blowers to push out the heat; fireplace inserts; woodstoves; heat pumps; and more. Most households heat with natural gas, with electricity coming in second, and smaller numbers using fuel oil and propane. • Thermostats now in homes allow us to pro-gram our heat to be as warm or cool as we want at certain times of the day or night. If you stop air leaks around windows and doors that allow cold air to sneak in, the efficiency of your system will be greatly enhanced. But if you really want to save money, set your thermostat low and don some long underwear, a sweater, a hat, some socks and gloves!

In times past pearls were considered to be a sound investment such as gold or real estate. That’s because to find only one pearl thou-sands of oysters had to be searched. Today people take shell beads and place them inside an oyster, then place it back in the water to be harvested once the oyster has covered the bead with layers of nacre. It’s no longer a mystery which oyster is carrying a pearl, they all are! Most cultured pearls are produced in Japan. The larger oysters of the South Pacific produce South Sea cultured pearls and Tahitian black cultured pearls that are larger in size. China produces freshwater pearls using mussels. You judge the quality of a pearl by the orient (the soft iridescence caused by the refraction of light by the layers of nacre) and by luster (the surface reflectivity and shine). Shape, size and color also impact their value. To tell the difference between an imitation pearl and a cultured and natural pearl rub it against the edge of a tooth. The cultured and natural pearl will feel slightly rough like fine grain sandpaper. Imitations will be smooth as glass.

Portions and Timing

Time to get some facts about what to eat, when to eat and why to eat!

In my previous columns I made the comparison of how often babies eat. Remember? Every 2-3 hours right? What does this do? This keeps our body functions and metabolism working at optimum efficiency! If you only eat once a day, your body has nothing to do, so it slows down. You’ve probably heard, our bodies are fine-tuned machines! Think of a car... It needs appropriate fuel all of the time, to operate properly. Our bodies need the same appropriate fuel, all the time!

So, what to do you eat? This subject can get pretty detailed, so let me just give you a simple, effective tip: if it wasn’t around 100+ years ago, don’t eat it! Highly processed (man-made) foods are not a good choice! Our bodies were not designed to process and break down such fuel!

What are we supposed to eat? Whole, natural foods from the earth! So next time you pick something up at the store and wonder is this a healthy choice, stop and think; was this around 100 years ago? Hopefully this will simplify what you choose!

Next week I’ll discuss the benefits of portion control, and the positive effects it has on your metabolism.

Until then, yours in health, fitness & wellness,

Delay in Investing Could Prove Costly

You’ve no doubt heard that “time is money.” While this expression may be applicable in many areas of life, it’s especially relevant for investors — because the more time you spend not investing, the less money you are likely to have when you really need it, such as

during your retirement. That’s why it’s essential that you don’t wait to start saving for your days as a retiree.

Many people think it won’t make much difference if they delay investing for a few years. As you know, time flies, and before you know it, “a few years” turns into a decade — and a decade’s postponement in saving for retirement can make an enormous difference in your life.

How big a difference? Suppose you plan to retire at age 65. If at age 25, you began putting $200 a month into a tax-deferred vehicle, such as a traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA), and your investments inside that IRA hypothetically earned on average 7% a year, you would accumulate about $512,000 after 40 years. However, if you had waited until you were age 30 to start saving for retirement, with all else being equal, you’d end up with only about $355,000 when you reached 65 — $157,000 less — due to that five-year delay. And if you waited 10 years, until you were 35, you’d end up with about $243,000 — far less than half of what you would have accumulated had you started saving at 25. (Keep in mind that you will eventually have to pay taxes on these accumulations, and the actu-al figures don’t reflect fees, commissions or expenses.)

Clearly, the cost of delay can be considerable — which is why you should consider taking these steps:

Develop a strategy with your financial advisor. It’s easier to stick to a strategy if you know where you’re going. Your financial advisor can help you determine how much you need to save to reach the type of retire-ment you’ve envisioned. If you haven’t started saving, begin now. If you wait until you feel more financially comfortable before you invest for retirement, you may never begin. Even if you can put away only a small amount, such as $50 per month, you’ll have made a start. To make it easier on yourself, set up your accounts to automatically move a set amount each month into your IRA. As the above examples show, the best way to build substantial savings is to start early, but even if you’re in your 30s or 40s, you can catch up — although you’ll need to save more to potentially get to the same level. Increase your investments when your income rises. Every time you get a salary increase, boost your contri-butions to your IRA and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. Don’t take a “timeout” from investing. Keep on in-vesting, whether the “news of the day” is positive or negative. The best investors are those who follow a consistent strategy and continue investing, year in and year out.

In short, save early, save often — and keep investing.

GOOD Dec. 2011. Discount not valid on sale items.

Matthew 8:1-2 (NLT) Large crowds followed Jesus as he came down the mountainside. 2 Suddenly, a man with leprosy approached him and knelt before him. “Lord,” the man said, “if you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean.” Right here is where millions of Christians find themselves today in regards to healing. They believe that God can heal their body, they believe He has the power and the ability to heal them. But just like this leper here, they are not convinced that it is His will to heal them. Do you see the difference? God, I know you can but is it your will for me? Well fortunately, you only need one verse further to have that question answered for your life. How did Jesus respond to this question? Matthew 8:3 (NLT)Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. “Be healed!” And instantly the leprosy disappeared. There you have it, Jesus said I am willing. Well if he was willing then, he must be willing now because the Bible tells us that God does not change. It also tells us that God is not a respecter of persons. What that means if he healed the leper, he will heal you, if not he has changed and we know that cannot be! “I am willing”, he said. “Be healed!” This is exciting news for everyone who has ever asked the question, is it God’s will for me to be healed, for me to be whole. It is God’s will for His children to be healed. Jesus said, if you have seen me, you have seen the Father, He also said, I only do those things which I see my Father doing. In other words, ever thing that Jesus said, everything that Jesus did, was and is the revealed will of God, for all men, for all ages! And that includes healing for your body. For several weeks now I have been teaching a series in our church on this particular subject and we have seen several people healed simply as they have heard the Word preached and faith rose up in their hearts and they received their healing. Are you in need of healing? Have you gotten a bad report from the doctor’s that says they can’t help you? Do you know someone, a friend, a family member who needs healing in their body? Then let me invite you to come to our next service, Sunday Feb. 20th at 10:30. We will have a very special guest, healing evangelist Glen Brown, of Glen Brown Miracle Ministries. He has been called by God to walk in the power of the Holy Spirit bringing miracles, signs, and wonders, to a lost and dying world and to proclaim the love of God in people’s lives. Come and experience the power and the manifestation of God’s presence as we worship and proclaim His Name. Well but Pastor Chris, what if I bring someone and they don’t get healed? What if you bring them and they do get healed!

On Feb. 7, 1812, the most violent of a series of earthquakes near Missouri causes a so-called fluvial tsunami in the Mississippi River, making the river run backward for several hours. The strongest of the aftershocks, an 8.8-magnitude, caused church bells to ring in Boston, more than a thousand miles away.

On Feb. 8, 1924, the first execution by lethal gas in American history is carried out in Carson City, Nev. The executed man was Tong Lee, a member of a Chinese gang who was convicted of murdering a rival gang member.

On Feb. 11, 1937, after a six-week sit-down strike by General Motors autoworkers in Flint, Mich., GM president Alfred P. Sloan signs the first union contract in the history of the Ameri-can auto industry. Today, the UAW has more than 390,000 ac-tive members and more than a 600,000 retired members.

On Feb. 6, 1952, King George VI of Great Britain and North-ern Ireland dies in his sleep at the royal estate at Sandringham. Princess Elizabeth, the oldest of the king’s two daughters and next in line to succeed him, was crowned Queen Elizabeth II on June 2, 1953, at age 27.

On Feb. 10, 1962, Francis Gary Powers, an American who was shot down over the Soviet Union while flying a CIA spy plane in 1960, is released by the Soviets in exchange for the U.S. re-lease of a Russian spy. On May 1, 1960, Powers’ U-2 had been shot down by a Soviet missile. Although Powers was supposed to engage the plane’s self-destruct system (and commit suicide with poison furnished by the CIA), he and much of the plane were captured.

On Feb. 9, 1971, pitcher Leroy “Satchel” Paige becomes the first Negro League veteran to be nominated for the Baseball Hall of Fame. He was inducted in August of that year. Joe DiM-aggio once called Paige “the best and fastest pitcher I’ve ever faced.”

On Feb. 12, 1988, two Soviet warships bump two U.S. navy vessels in waters claimed by the Soviet Union. The incident be-tween the ships took place in the Black Sea within the 12-mile territorial limit claimed by the Soviet Union.

GROWING OLD

Just before the funeral services, the undertaker came up to the very elderly widow and asked, 'How old was your husband?' '98,' she replied, 'Two years older than me' 'So you're 96,' the un-dertaker commented. She responded , 'Hardly worth going home, is it?

Reporter interviewing a 104-year-old woman: 'And what do you think is the best thing about being 104?' the reporter asked. She simply re-plied, 'No peer pressure.'

The nice thing about being senile is You can hide your own Easter eggs.

I've sure gotten old! I've had two bypass surger-ies, a hip replacement, New knees, fought pros-tate cancer and diabetes. I'm half blind, can't hear anything quieter than a jet engine, take 40 different medications that make me dizzy, winded, and subject to blackouts. Have bouts with dementia .. Have poor circulation; Hardly feel my hands and feet anymore. Can't remem-ber if I'm 89 or 98. Have lost all my friends. But, thank God, I still have my driver's license.

I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor's permission to join a fitness club and start exercising. I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and per-spired for an hour.. But, by the time I got my leotards on, The class was over.

My memory's not as sharp as it used to be.Also, my memory's not as sharp as it used to be.

Know how to prevent sagging? Just eat till the wrinkles fill out.

It's scary when you start making the same nois-es as your coffee maker.

These days about half the stuff in my shopping cart says, "For fast relief"

THE SENILITY PRAYER :

Grant me the senility to forget the people I nev-er liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones I do, and the eyesight to tell the dif-ference..

Always Remember This:You don't stop laughing because you grow old,

You grow old because you stop laughing!!!

DID NOAH FISH?

A Sunday school teacher asked, “Johnny, do you think Noah did a lot of fishing when he was on the Ark ?” “No,” replied Johnny. “How could he, with just two worms.
