Cook Mountain passes around the world can be high, steep, rocky and just plain challenging to traverse. It is the most easily ac- cessible point between mountains where you can “pass” through. The pass is considered the highest point or sum- mit at which you traverse the area. Passes have always been very important finds for pioneers moving across the country, as well as road and rail builders. The definition of a mountain pass is actually: “The location in a range of mountains of a geological formation that is lower than the surrounding peaks.” Other terms used in North America for a pass are sad- dle, notch and gap. Pass and saddle are most commonly used in the West, while the East Coast tends to use the terms notch and gap. Semo La, a pass in central Tibet, at 18,258 feet (5,565 m), is considered to be the highest pass accessible by ve- hicles. It is a high, isolated place in the Chang Tang re- gion of Tibet. Also in Tibet is the highest mountain pass accessible by train. The Tanggula Pass in the mountains of the same name has a rail station at 16,640 feet (5,072 m). MOUNTAIN PASSES (continued):• At 7,239 feet (2,206 m), the highest pass with a paved road in Canada is Highwood Pass in Kanan-askis Country, a multi-use park area in the Canadi-an Rockies of Alberta, west of Calgary. You can’t get there during the winter as the road is closed from mid-December to mid-June due to heavy snowfall. It is a spectacular drive and a great place to take photographs during the summer. • The Beartooth Pass on U.S. Highway 212, also known as the Beartooth Highway, is the highest point on the 68-mile (109-km) road that begins at the northeast entrance to Yellowstone National Park near Silver Gate, Montana. The road goes in a northeastern direction mostly through Wyoming, ending in Red Lodge, Montana. The highway was built in the 1930s and is still considered a great engineering feat. It hugs mountains along curvy switchbacks up, across and back down through the alpine plateau. The pass is 10,947 feet (3,337 m) above sea level, and the road is one of the highest elevation roads in the United States. The highway was named for a distinct peak that looks like a bear tooth. • Known as one of the most scenic drives in North America, the Beartooth Highway is designated as a “National Scenic Byways All-American Road.” The high elevation of the road and the high snow-fall amounts in the region make it accessible only in the warmer months; it is usually open from May through October. This highway is considered an “orphan” road because no federal or state agency claims actual ownership.• South of Yellowstone in the Teton Range of the Rockies, Teton Pass Road runs between Jackson, Wyoming, and Teton Valley, Idaho. The highway has a steep 10 percent grade with lots of twists and turns and can be a real test of driving skills in the winter. It tops out at 8,431 feet (2,591 m), and the Wyoming Department of Transportation uses blasting to control avalanches and keep the road open most winter days. • Colorado, with its many “fourteeners” (peaks that are more than 14,000 feet (4,267 m) above sea level), has many amazing mountain passes. Independence Pass that connects Twin Lakes and Aspen during the summer (closed in winter) has expansive views where three of the five tallest mountains in the state can be seen: La Plata Peak, Mount Massive and the tallest peak in the Rocky Mountains, Mount Elbert. The summit for the pass is 12,095 feet (3,687 m). • The song “Wolf Creek Pass,” written by Bill Fries and Chip Davis and sung by C.W. Mc-Call in 1975, made the pass of the same name in southern Colorado somewhat famous. The coun-

We don’t think of our cats as “captive” animals, but in truth they are. Indoor-only cats are captive in our homes and can become bored, leading to “sickness behaviors.” How do you know your cat is bored? Inappropriate litterbox behaviors, aggression, decreased food or water intake, vomiting/diarrhea, lethargy and changes in general grooming CAN be signs of sickness behaviors due to the stress of captivity.

If your cat is experiencing any of these behaviors, Cat Specialist can help you determine whether they are due to a medical condition. If your cat is medically sound, we are always available to talk feline enrichment with you. From cat trees to toys, there are many different smells and sounds that can break up the kitty doldrums!

A Breakthrough Diet for Arthritic Cats – J/d

90% of senior cats over 10 years of age have varying degrees of arthritis and joint pain. Cats are masters at hiding disease and arthritis is one of the many diseases that cats commonly hide from their owners. Sore cats jump up & down less, sleep more, walk with a mild limp, have litterbox accidents, stop playing and are much less social. This is not just getting old, it is due to pain. In nature any animal showing disability is the target for predation so cats know that they need to hide problems.

Hill’s prescription diet j/d is the first diet to effectively treat arthritis. The diet plays a pivotal role in decreasing pain, inflammation, and increasing mobility. In a research study, cats with arthritis showed that 71% had pain induced behavioral changes but only 17% in that group showed signs of lameness. Using a diet to control phosphorus levels and increased omega 3 fatty acids -- the kidneys and joints functioned better. J/d also has increased levels of L-carnitine to help control weight and adjust blood sugar levels. Age is not a disease.

Managing age related diseases is the purpose of senior wellness care. J/d has been available to cat lovers in Europe for over a year. Cats that eat the food consistently for 28 days show a marked improvement in – walking, jumping, running and playing more. The palatability of the diet is very good but of course your cat will be the judge. If in your opinion the food does not meet your expectations – return it for a full refund because it is a guaranteed prescription diet. Talk with our staff at Cat Specialist about how this diet can help your cat. The J/d nutritional approach is a major step forward in improving the quality of life of our senior cats!

--“If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve man but deteriorate the cat.” -- Mark Twain

try song describes a wild ride in an 18-wheel truck carrying a load of chickens. From the top of the pass at 10,857 feet (3,309 m) to the town of Pagosa Springs, there is a 5,000-foot (1,524-m) drop in el-evation. The driver is going much too fast down the pass, and as the singer explains, “I’m not the type to complain, but the time has come for me to explain, that if you don’t apply some brake real soon, they’re gonna have to pick us up with a stick an’ a spoon.”• When the song was written, Wolf Creek Pass was an intimidating two-lane road. A tunnel was com-pleted in 2005, and an expansion to a multi-lane, widened highway was finished in 2006 to make the road a bit easier to navigate.• Another Colorado road worth mentioning is Train Ridge, U.S. 34, which goes through Rocky Moun-tain National Park. The highest continuous auto road in the country, the road is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It meanders for 48 miles (77 km) through glacier-carved valleys with views of majestic peaks and crystalline lakes and crosses the Continental Divide. While it doesn’t have sheer cliffs to scare drivers and passengers, it definitely has memorable scenery. • South of the equator in South America, there are 42 mountain passes between Chile and Argentina, whose border runs from north to south through the Andes Mountains. It is the third longest international border, 3,300 miles (5,300 km) long. An interesting statue at what was once a main route between the two countries is the Cristo Redentor (Christ the Re-deemer). At the top of the pass, at 13,780 feet (4,200 m) above sea level, the statue stands tall at 26 feet (8 m) and weighs 12,000 pounds (5.4 metric tons). • The Cristo Redentor was taken by train to Uspall-ata, Argentina, and then the rest of the way by mule in 1904. It commemorated the peaceful conclusion to a territorial dispute between the two countries. Today, the dirt road is only accessed by tour busses and adventure seekers, with the main route between the countries being the Cristo Redentor tunnel that opened in 1980. This Cristo Redentor is not as well known as the famous statue of the same name on top of the mountain overlooking Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

• Whether you are exploring the mountains of North America, South America, Asia or elsewhere, you are sure to find some terrific mountain passes and outstanding views. Just don’t forget your camera!

The magic of black is seen in jewelry made from onyx, a black chalcedony quartz with a delicate texture that is often carved into cameos. Though still popular with jewelry designers, onyx was especially popular with the ancient Greeks and Romans. There’s an old legend about Cupid finding Venus asleep and taking the opportunity to cut her fingernails with an arrowhead. He left the clippings scattered on the sand and the fates turned them into stone so that no part of the heavenly body would ever perish. The stone, as the story goes, was onyx, which brings up an interesting question, “Did Venus wear Vamp?” There may be an explanation. Back in Greek times nearly all colors of chalcedony from fingernail white to dark black were called onyx. Later the Romans narrowed the term to refer to black and dark brown colors only. Black onyx is used often as a background for color play. Its fine texture makes it ideal for carving and therefore a favored material for today's lapidaries. Onyx was often used as the perfect foil for carved rock crystal or the 'drop dead red' of rubies in art deco designs. It is also popular in marcasite jewelry. Use onyx to add a little black magic to your jewelry design.

Not Just a New Year, But a New Life!

If you’ve decided THIS is going to be your year to change your life, make significant changes, and be more happy and healthy, it’s time to make your plan!

It’s important you cover all aspects in your planning! You need to create not only a healthy body, but also a healthy mind and a happy, healthy soul! One really doesn’t work long term without the others!

What are the steps? Well, I find writing things down usually help me stay organized and on task. Write out what you want for yourself! Yes, that’s right, for one moment forget about what everyone else wants or needs from you, and focus on what YOU want and need FOR YOURSELF!

Have a meeting with yourself! Might sound silly, but we all need to look in the mirror from time to time and figure out what’s going on inside, or around us, which impacts our life in a negative way! Once you figure out what those are, make the commitment to change them, thereby creating a happier and more fulfilling life for yourself! Ask yourself, “What am I unwilling to do to help myself feel happy”?…something to think about!

Next week, I’ll share some helpful tips which have helped me along the way!

Until then, yours in health, fitness & wellness,

All I Want for Christmas Is My Eight Front Teeth

Is YOUR Smile “TIRED”? How important is your smile to that relationship, that business deal, and to how confident you feel? Look in the mirror – close up: Are they yellow, stained, gapped, worn, and “tired”?

Just say “NO” to “Tired Teeth” You can have the smile of your dreams - with NO shots, NO drilling, NO Pain and NO sensitivity; and if there’s no “drilling”, it’s reversible!

What are Lumineers? Ultrathin Lumineers are made of a beautiful, strong “white” porcelain. They are made thin, so they can fit over your own teeth and not make you look like one of our “equine” friend’s smile.

How many do I need? Typically, a nice, beautiful smile shows eight to ten teeth. My own Smile Makeover needed ten Lumineers. The first session took just a few minutes with a little polishing reshaping and an easy impression. Then at a second session, in about an hour, I got my new smile. It was easy - with NO shots, NO drilling, No pain, and NO sensitivity!

Don’t hide that smile. “Smile Confidently, Smile Out Loud – with Pain-free Lumineers”

YOUR END-OF-THE-YEAR FINANCIAL CHECK-UPS

Now is the right time to take a look at a few financial matters:

1. Review health and dental care choices. Many employ-ers allow you to make changes to your benefit plans now. Check with doctors and dentists to make sure they're still in your plan's preferred provider network and that your family has adequate coverage.

2. Review use-or-lose accounts. Pretax Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) are set up this way. Review your plan to see if you have some spending to do, or if your em-ployer offers a grace period. Even then, make sure 2011 expenses are still allowed in 2012.

3. Review your withholding. Check the withholding calculator at the IRS website. If you haven't been with-holding enough to cover your taxes, you might want to increase the amount. Under-withholding can result in penalties.

4. Get ready for 2011 taxes. Check last year's returns to see who needs to send you what tax documents, and by when. Make a list and follow up if anyone holds you up at the beginning of the year. Also, check last year's return for itemized deductions. See if you should make deduct-ible purchases now or wait until 2012.

Note: Be sure to consult with a tax professional before making any decisions related to your tax situation.

5. Set your 2012 financial goals. Now is the time to write down what you'd like to achieve financially next year. Save money for a down payment on a new house? Start a college fund for your kids? Put more into your retirement fund?

Remember, we're always here to answer any questions.... Have a great day!

PS With today's extremely low mortgage rates and home prices more affordable than ever, many people are upsiz-ing, downsizing or refinancing. Please call or email us now to discuss your situation

What Does Investment Land-scape Look Like in 2012?

As an investor, you know that 2011 was a somewhat “choppy” year, with the financial markets going through many ups and downs. So what can you expect in 2012? As baseball Hall of Famer Yogi Berra is quoted as saying: “It’s

hard to make predictions — especially about the future.” And these words are certainly applicable for anyone who would like an accurate forecast of the investment climate.

Yet we do know of some factors that may affect your portfolio in the months ahead. Here are a few of them:

Strong business fundamentals — This past year, all the noise about the debt ceiling debate, the size of the U.S. deficit and the European financial situation tended to drown out some fairly good news: U.S. businesses’ balance sheets were strong for the most part, borrowing costs remained low, and corporate profits were good — and corporate profitability remains a key driver of stock prices. Heading into 2012, these fundamentals continue to look positive, which may bode well for investors.Europe’s debt crisis — Greece’s economic problems made a lot of news in 2011, but they weren’t the end of the story in Europe, as major financial difficulties also face Italy, Spain, Portugal and Ireland. It’s by no means clear how these problems will be resolved, so don’t be surprised to see them lead to intermittent, if short-lived, shocks to the markets. Election-year patterns — As you’re well aware, we’re voting for president in 2012. But you might be surprised to learn that the S&P 500 index has shown negative re-turns in only three of the last 21 presidential election years. Coincidence? No one can say for sure — and at this point, no one can say if this pattern of positive re-turns will continue during this election year. Still, it’s an interesting phenomenonSo there you have it: the good, the bad and the quirky. Take them all together, and you still may not be able to foresee what will happen with the markets this year, but you’ll have a lot to think about. But instead of trying to predict what will happen in 2012, you may be better off following these tried-and-true investment strategies:

Diversify your holdings. By spreading your money among a wide range of investments, you can reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio. Keep in mind, though, that diversification, by itself, can’t guarantee profits or protect against loss. Don’t ignore your risk tolerance. If you worry exces-sively about market fluctuations, you may have too much risk in your portfolio, which means you may need to make some changes. Always look at the “big picture.” Financial markets will always fluctuate. But if you can keep your focus on your long-term objectives, and make decisions accordingly, you can avoid overreacting to short-term events. Like other years, 2012 will bring with it periods of both turbulence and smooth sailing. But by making the right investment moves, you can still chart a course that can allow you to move ever closer to your future goals.

GOOD Dec. 2011. Discount not valid on sale items.

With the New Year upon us, many of us tend to look back on the year just ended and with the prospect of a new one in front us we formulate a plan to change certain things for the better. We call those plans our New Year’s Resolution. And while I am all for change, the fact is that 4 out of 5 people who make them will break them and one third of us won’t make it past January. Not very good odds if you ask me. But there is a change that can happen to us, a change that will last for an eternity, and the good news it is very simple to achieve. The Bible tells us in 2 Cor. 5:17 says that, “that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” Wow, your old life gone, a new life begun? How exactly does that happen?

Well, first of all we need to realize that this scripture is not talking about a physical change. We are all very aware of our physical bodies but the real you is not a physical body but a spirit. God created you and me in His image and in His likeness, and God is a spirit and so are we. We have a spirit, that has a soul, (your mind, will, and emotions), that lives in a body. We need our physical bodies to be able to operate on this earth, but one day we will leave here and when we do, we do not stop being us, we are the same person we were before we died, we just leave our body. The change the Bible is talking about is a spiritual change, your spirit is created brand new and this is the miracle of the new birth.

Because of sin, our spirit has been corrupted and we cannot approach God because he is a Holy and Righteous God. But God made a way for us through His son Jesus and we just celebrated His birth just last week. God so loved us that He sent His son Jesus, in the form of a child, who through His death and resurrection would make a way for us to come back to our Father. But the choice is ours. God never forces himself on anyone. So how does this happen? It is very simple.

Consider what Romans 10 says, “The message is very close at hand; it is on your lips and in your heart.”And that message is the very message about faith that we preach: 9 If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved…Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How great is that! Will you call on Him today, will you be changed forever? What a great way to start not only a New Year, but a new and eternal life with Him!

What To Do When Your Home Expires From

the M.L.SDouglas County - If your home has just

come off the market and hasn’t sold, don’t be discouraged. The reason your home did not sell may have nothing to do with your home or the market. In reality, your home may have been one of the more desirable properties for sale. So Why Didn’t Your Home Sell?

Last year many of the homes listed for sale never sold at all, and many sellers found that there was a tremendous amount a homeowner needed to be educated on to sell their home for top dollar in the shortest time period. Don’t risk making the wrong choices and losing both time and money on your investment. Before you hire a realtor again, know the right questions to ask to save you time and money.

Industry experts have prepared a free special report called “How to Sell a House that Didn’t Sell” which educates you on the issues involved.

On Jan. 22, 1779, famed Tory outlaw Claudius Smith meets his end on the gallows in Gosh-en, N.Y. Smith earned the label “Cowboy of the Ramapos” for his use of guerrilla tactics against Patriot civilians. Legend has it that Smith’s skull was filled with mortar and included in the edifice of the Goshen Court House.

On Jan. 19, 1809, poet, author and literary critic Edgar Allan Poe is born in Boston. In 1836, Poe married his 13-year-old cousin, Virginia Clemm, and completed his first full-length work of fiction, “Arthur Gordon Pym.” He became known for dark horror stories like “The Fall of the House of Ush-er” and “The Tell-Tale Heart.”

On Jan. 17, 1893, on the Hawaiian Islands, a group of American sugar planters under Sanford Ballard Dole overthrow Queen Liliuokalani, the Hawaiian monarch, and establish a new provincial government with Dole as president. Three hundred U.S. Marines were called to Hawaii, allegedly to protect American lives.

On Jan. 18, 1912, after a two-month ordeal, the expedition of British explorer Robert Falcon Scott arrives at the South Pole, only to find that Norwe-gian explorer Roald Amundsen had preceded them by just more than a month. Caught in a storm on the way back to base camp, Scott and two others perished.

On Jan. 16, 1945, Adolf Hitler, leader of Nazi Germany, takes to his underground bunker, where he remains for 105 days until he commits suicide on April 30 in the waning days of World War II. Hitler and his wife swallowed cyanide capsules (which had been tested on his “beloved” dog and her pups). For good measure, he shot himself with his pistol.

On Jan. 21, 1957, Patsy Cline, one of the great-est figures in country music history, first gains national attention with her appearance on “Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts,” wowing the studio audi-ence with her performance of “Walkin’ After Mid-night.”

On Jan. 20, 1980, bleachers at a bullring in Sin-celejo, Colombia, collapse, killing 222 people. The deadliest tragedy at a sporting event in Colombia’s history was the result of overcrowding and poor construction.

FLASHBACKBy Mick Harper

1. Name the two famous rockers who died a week apart in the fall of 1970.2. What was most memorable about Mitch Mill-er’s television show in the early 1960s?3. Which group released “Fortunate Son,” and when?4. Singer James “Shep” Sheppard was a member of what two early groups?5. Which group released “So Far Away” and “Walk of Life,” and when?6. Who snagged a Grammy in 1983 for “You Should Hear How She Talks About You”?

Answers1. Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. In both cases it was a drug overdose, likely accidental. Both were 27 years old.2. “Sing Along With Mitch” (1961-1964) was a music program with the lyrics to songs helpfully rolling at the bottom of the screen. (YouTube it for a sample of old-fashioned family entertain-ment.)3. Creedence Clearwater Revival, in 1968. The anti-establishment song has appeared in a number of movies, including “Forrest Gump,” as well as a jeans commercial.4. The Heartbeats (earlier known as the Hearts) and Shep and the Limelites, best known for the 1961 hit “Daddy’s Home.”5. Dire Straits, 1985. The two songs did fairly well, but it was the group’s “Money for Nothing” that got the Grammy that year.6. Melissa Manchester.

My Favorite Animal

Our teacher asked what my favorite animal was, and I said, "Fried chicken." She said I wasn't funny, but she couldn't have been right, because everyone else laughed.

My parents told me to always tell the truth. I did. Fried chicken is my favorite animal.

I told my dad what happened, and he said my teacher was probably a member of PETA. He said they love animals very much. I do, too. Especially chicken, pork and beef.

Anyway, my teacher sent me to the principal's of-fice. I told him what happened, and he laughed, too. Then he told me not to do it again.

The next day in class my teacher asked me what my favorite live animal was. I told her it was chicken. She asked me why, so I told her it was because you could make them into fried chicken. She sent me back to the principal's office. He laughed, and told me not to do it again.

I don't understand. My parents taught me to be hon-est, but my teacher doesn't like it when I am.

Today, my teacher asked us to tell her what famous person we admire most. I told her, "Colonel Sand-ers." Guess where I am now...

Christmas Lights

I love CHRISTMAS LIGHTS,They remind me of some co-workers.They all hang together,Half of them don't work, and the ones that do aren't that bright.

Tom Brady, after living a full life, died. When he got to heaven, God was showing him around. They came to a modest little house with a faded Patriots flag in the win-dow. "This house is yours for eternity Tom," said God. "This is very special; not everyone gets a house up here." Tom felt special, indeed, and walked up to his house. On his way up the porch, he noticed another house just around the ...corner. It was a huge 3-story mansion with Orange and Blue sidewalks and drive ways, a 50 foot tall flagpole with an enormous Broncos logo flag waving, a swimming pool in the shape of a horse, a Broncos logo in every window, and a Tim Tebow jersey on the front door. Tom looked at God and said "God, I'm not trying to be ungrateful, but I have a question. I was an all-pro QB, I won 3 Super Bowls, and I even went to the Hall of Fame." God said "So what's your point Tom?" "Well, why does Tim Tebow get a better house than me?" God chuckled, and said "Tom, that's not Tim's house, it's mine."
