GREEN THINGS (continued):• If a company is guilty of green-washing, they are misleading consumers by proclaiming that they im-plement positive environmental practices that don’t exist or can’t be substantiated. The company might falsely claim that they use recycled content in their product, or advertise one small truth to distract con-sumers from a larger falsehood. • The word green has found its way into many terms in the English language. If you’re a green-horn, you’re an inexperienced beginner. When the green-eyed monster rears its ugly head, it represents jealousy; similarly, an individual can be green with envy. Those who have the ability to make anything grow are said to have a green thumb. If you have a roll of greenbacks, your pocket is full of U.S. cur-rency. Not feeling well? You might be described as green around the gills. • Members of the Green Party focus on the envi-ronment, equal opportunity, social justice and non-violence. It is their platform that, “every human be-ing deserves a say in the decisions that affect their lives.” The party does not accept corporate dona-tions, shunning corporations’ influence and control over government and the media. Probably the most famous Green Party member is Ralph Nader. • The blue-green color of teal was named for the Common Teal, also known as the Eurasian Teal, a common breed of duck, which is the smallest “dab-bling” duck. This means it feeds at the surface of the water rather than by diving. The Teal’s green eye patch dominates the bird’s otherwise chestnut-colored head. • The myrtle plant is the source of the green color by the same name, a very dark shade, darker than spinach. Plants in the same family as the myrtle in-clude the clove, guava, allspice and eucalyptus. • Most people won’t recognize the name of Hugh “Lumpy” Brannum, but baby boomers will remem-ber him as the overall-wearing sidekick of chil-dren’s television’s Captain Kangaroo. Aptly named Mr. Green Jeans, Brannum appeared as the handy-man at the Treasure House from 1955 to 1984.

• We know the Trifolium repens by another name — the white clover, but more commonly, the sham-rock. Taken from the Irish word, seamrog, mean-ing “little clover,” this white-flowered perennial was regarded by early Celts as a charm against evil spirits. Legend has it that St. Patrick used the little three-leafed plant to illustrate the doctrine of the Holy Trinity — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — to the Irish people, demonstrating how each leaf was separate yet joined together in a single stem. Most Irish brides include shamrocks in their bridal bou-quet as well as in the groom’s boutonniere.

1 in 6 Cats Have Heart Disease!

Please call 303.663.2287 (CATS) for more information or visit www.catspecialist.com

Cats are the masters of hiding illness and they commonly have sudden onset of life threatening cardiac signs. Apparently healthy cats that undergo elective anesthetic procedures like dental cleaning, spays & neuters and then unexpectedly die, most likely have underlying heart disease as the cause. The Cat Specialist doctors have studied this problem and they wrote one of the first papers in 2005 defining how common ‘silent’ heart disease is in the cat.

The good news is that Cat Specialist has led the way in doing pre-anesthetic echocardiograms. Early diagnosis of ‘silent’ heart disease and proper treatment allow cats to live normal lives. It is very rare in our practice to see sudden death syndrome because our doctors are very aware of this deadly problem. If you have questions please call our hospital.

Feline Quotes and Sayings: “Have you ever won an argument with a cat

. . . really?” - Doc

Dangers are Everywhere – Protect Your Cat

Indoor and Outdoor plants: many common plants are toxic to cats. Eating the leaves and fruits can be deadly. Ask your greenhouse expert to run a check on the plants you have around your house. Just a few plants I saw while shopping that are deadly: foxglove, lilies, belladonna, iris to name a few.

Bees, wasps, spider, ants, centipedes, and most creepy/crawlies have stings, venom and make a poor meal. Cats are attracted to motion and the thrill of the hunt.

Environmental Contamination: oil, gasoline, grease, fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, pesticides can be deadly poisons. Clean up any spills and store dangerous chemicals in a safe area.

Mosquitoes transmit heartworm, Ticks transmit lymes disease, Bats/Skunks/Raccoons bites can transmit rabies, and Fleas from Squirrels/Mice carry bubonic plague.

A Rattlesnake’s bite can be deadly. We live in rattlesnake country!

Excess Sun on some white cats’ ears, face, and nose can cause skin cancer.

Construction/Cleaning/Painting all have trauma/toxic danger for a curious cat.

Hunting can transmit parasitic/bacterial/viral diseases to cats.

Cars/Motorcycles/Bicycles can be a deadly combination if your cat ventures outdoors. Trauma injuries are common in cats that go outdoors.

Believe it or not – cats/kittens sleeping with humans have been smothered when people roll over on their pets.

Ruby: TheKing of Gems

Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. For more information on gemstones or jewelry of any kind call 303.841.2666

For thousands of years the ruby has been consid-ered the undisputed ruler in the world of gems with many hailing it the “King of Gemstones”! It has beautiful color, exceptional hardness, and a brilliance fit for a king’s crown making it one of the most valuable gemstones on earth, able to bring as much or more than a diamond of comparable size. The most important feature of a ruby is its color with its transparency being of secondary importance. Inclusions, the solid, liquid, or gaseous foreign bodies enclosed within in a ruby, will not prejudice the quality of a ruby unless they diminish its transparency or are located right in the center of its table. Inclusions can even increase the value of a ruby because it is consid-ered a fingerprint of the stone providing evidence of individuality and giving proof that it is of natural origin. The most important ruby deposits in the world are found in the small town of Mong Hsu in the North-East of Myanmar (Southeast Asia). Deposits are also found in Thailand, Sri Lanka and Tanzania with minor deposits in other places around the world including Montana and North Carolina. Beware of many imitations on the market, especially glass imitations and doublets (counterfeit gems made of two pieces, either of smaller gemstones, inferior stones, or glass). If you find the perfect ruby, may I suggest you buy it! It will cost you a small fortune but will bring you great pleasure, and will be an investment well worth keeping.

• The color green is considered sacred in the Islam religion as a symbol of vegetation and new life. Folklore states that Muhammad was especially fond of the color and wore a green cloak and tur-ban. According to the Koran, inhabitants of Para-dise will dress in fine garments of green silk. Sev-eral Islamic nations incorporate the color into their flags; in fact, the flag of Libya is simply a green field, with no other colors, designs or details.

• That pigment in plants and algae that makes them green is known as chlorophyll, and it is necessary for the process of photosynthesis. Chlorophyll ab-sorbs sunlight and uses that energy to synthesize carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water. Leaves change color in the fall because the chloro-phyll in the leaves begins to decay. • A gentleman in China who wants to express his love for his sweetheart will give her a gift of jade. In this culture, this gemstone indicates eternity, and is given to convey deep eternal love, similar to the symbol of gold and diamonds in the Western world.

• At the end of the yellow brick road in the Land of Oz is the Emerald City, home of the famous Wizard. In L. Frank Baum’s legendary novel, all those entering the Emerald City were made to wear green-tinted eyeglasses that made everything look green, although the City was “no more green than any other city.” • Can you imagine the Wicked Witch of the West without her trademark green makeup in the 1939 film, “The Wizard of Oz”? The makeup, which took two hours every day to apply, achieved its distinctive color from a dangerous chemical, cop-per oxide, and actress Margaret Hamilton had to exercise extreme caution when eating meals while wearing it, so as not to ingest any. It became even more dangerous when Hamilton was making her spectacular exit from Munchkinland via an eleva-tor in a trap door on the set. When the burst of real fire came up, her makeup ignited, causing painful burns that required six weeks to heal. • The mineral beryl, which is actually beryllium aluminum silicate, is a colorless crystal. But add a couple of impurities to the mineral, specifically chromium and vanadium, and the beryl crystal be-comes a beautiful green color. The new stone is called an emerald! Although emeralds are mined primarily in Colombia, they can also be found in Australia, Canada, India, Italy, France, Germany and Nigeria, among several other places. They have also been found in the U.S. states of Connect-icut, Montana, Nevada and the Carolinas.

OVERCOMING THE ODDS:

MARIO LEMIEUXNicknamed “Super Mario” by teammates and com-mentators, Mario Lemieux has proven himself to be just that. Struck by serious illness at the height of his career, this super athlete battled for his life and came back stronger than ever. • It seems appropriate that lemieux translates “the best” in French. Born in Montreal, Quebec, in 1965, Lemieux is widely considered one of the best hockey players of all time. In his 17 seasons as a forward with the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins, he scored 690 goals and had 1,033 assists. That’s quite an accomplishment considering that illness and injuries kept him out of 36 percent of his po-tential regular season games. • The Lemieux family basement was the first prac-tice field for young Mario, who, at age 3, started

practicing there with his brothers, using wooden kitchen spoons as hockey sticks and bottle caps as pucks. It only made sense for their father to pour a rink on the front lawn shortly afterward. • When Lemieux was drafted by the Penguins in 1984, the team was in deep financial trouble and the relocation rumors were flying. Ten years prior, the team had declared bankruptcy, and by the time of Lemieux’ first season, was drawing less than 7,000 fans per game and seemed unable to fill its arena to even half-capacity. • During his rookie season, Lemieux not only played in the NHL All-Star game, he was named that game’s MVP, the first rookie to achieve this distinction. With his help, Pittsburgh won the Stan-ley Cup in 1991 and 1992, and Lemieux was the NHL’s MVP three times, and the league’s leading scorer six times.

• With the 1990 season came back surgery for a her-niated disc and agonizing back pain. But it didn’t keep Lemieux from his first Stanley Cup and earning MVP of the playoffs. In early 1993 came the unbe-lievable announcement that he had been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He immediately be-gan aggressive radiation treatments. After only two months, on the day of his final treatment, he made the trip to Philadelphia to play in the Penguins-Fly-ers game. • Four months later, Lemieux was once again in sur-gery, this time for a herniated muscle in his back. At the end of the season, he was forced to take a leave of absence to recover from the fatigue of can-cer treatments. • Lemieux was back in full force for the beginning of the 1995 season, scoring his 500th career goal in October. During the following season came his 600th.

STRANGE BUT TRUEBy Samantha Weaver

¥ It was 20th-century German-American poet, nov-elist and short-story writer Charles Bukowski who made the following observation: “The difference be-tween a democracy and a dictatorship is that in a de-mocracy you vote first and take orders later; in a dic-tatorship you don’t have to waste your time voting.” ¥ In the 18 months that the Pony Express operated, carrying mail across the Wild West and its myriad hazards and dangers, only one pouch of mail was lost. ¥ It takes approximately 10 months for a Las Vegas slot machine to pay for itself. ¥ Benito Mussolini, Italian dictator and leader of that country’s National Fascist Party, grew up poor with a blacksmith father who, history indicates, spent most of his meager earnings on his mistress. When Benito was 27 years old, he met a 16-year-old girl named Rachele Guidi -- who was the daughter of that same mistress and her deceased husband. Rachele eventu-ally became Mussolini’s second wife.

¥ At one time, some churches banned the playing of Wagner’s “The Bridal Chorus,” also known as “Here Comes the Bride,” because the music was considered to be sexy and vulgar. ¥ You might not be surprised to learn that editor, lexi-cographer and textbook pioneer Noah Webster lob-bied Congress to make his plan for simplified spell-ing the law of the land. Had he been successful, the United States would have been the only country in

which incorrect spelling would be legally punish-able.

¥ Many people claim that Worcestershire sauce does an excellent job of cleaning copper and brass. ¥ In Chicago, if you have a hatpin hidden under a lapel, you are considered to be carrying a con-cealed weapon***Thought for the Day: “Of all the preposterous as-sumptions of humanity over humanity, nothing exceeds most of the criticisms made on the habits of the poor by the well-housed, well-warmed, and well-fed.” -- Herman Melville

401(k) Review and Rollover Can Be Rewarding

Your 401(k) offers tax-deductible contributions, tax-deferred growth of earnings potential and a variety of investment options — so it’s a great tool for building retirement savings. Yet like all tools, your 401(k) must be used properly to get the best results. That’s why you should review your

401(k) at least annually and make whatever adjustments are needed.

Depending on where you work, you may get some 401(k) re-view help from your plan provider. But if that assistance isn’t available, you might want to consult with a financial profes-sional to make sure you’re getting the maximum benefit from your plan.

As you begin to review your 401(k), your first question should probably be this:

“How much should I contribute?” At the very least, try to put in enough to receive your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. If you don’t earn this match, you are essen-tially walking away from “free money.” Beyond this, though, the amount you put into your 401(k) might depend on what other retirement savings vehicles you have available. For in-stance, if you’re eligible, you may also want to contribute to a Roth IRA, which offers tax-free growth potential, provided you’ve had your account for five years and don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re 59½.

Of course, it’s not only how much you put into your 401(k) that determines its success — it’s also how you choose to al-locate your investment dollars. (Keep in mind that asset allo-cation does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss.) Your 401(k) may have a dozen or more investment choices, such as stock funds, bond funds and money market funds. To choose the right investment mix, you’ll need to consider a variety of factors, including these:

Your age — Generally speaking, the younger you are, the more aggressive you can afford to be with your 401(k) investments, because you’ll have decades in which to potentially overcome the inevitable down periods of the market. As you get older, you may wish to invest somewhat more conservatively, but you’ll still need some growth potential in your 401(k) port-folio. Your goals — Everyone has different goals for retirement. You might want to retire early and travel the world, while your co-worker desires to work as long as possible and then, upon retirement, stay close to home and pursue hobbies. Because you each have different goals, with different income needs, you also may need to follow different investment strategies within your 401(k). Your other retirement income sources — If you have a variety of retirement income sources — a pension from another job, an IRA, a spouse with generous retirement benefits — you may need to invest differently, perhaps less aggressively, than if you had fewer options for retirement income.Apart from putting away as much as you can into your 401(k) and choosing the right investment mix, what else can you do to get the most out of your plan? Here’s a suggestion: If you have worked at various jobs and acquired multiple 401(k)s, consider rolling them over into one account. You might save money on fees and reduce paperwork, but more importantly, you’ll be able to concentrate your resources and pursue a uni-fied investment approach, with your investment dollars work-ing together toward your ultimate retirement goals.

As you can see, a 401(k) review and rollover can reward you in many ways — so do whatever it takes to maximize your 401(k)’s performance.

In Mark 10:27, Jesus said, “…with God all things are possible.” And for many Christians herein lays the dilemma they face. For most people who have ever been in church, they do believe that God can do anything, after all He created the worlds and everything in them. But when it comes to believing Him for something we need, although we say with our mouths, ‘all things are possible’, we question whether it is His will for us. Yes God is able, but is God willing; this is the question millions of Christians around the world ask each day. Is it God’s will to heal me, is it God’s will to deliver me, it is God’s will for me to prosper and get my bills paid? And sadly, many conclude by their experience, or maybe I should say it this way, their lack of experience, that if God doesn’t meet their need then is must not have been His will. I guess God is trying to teach me a lesson through this sickness, I guess God just wants me to be poor, etc. And many do not even believe that we can know God’s will, that He mysteriously sits in heaven and we just don’t know what or when He will do something. Well, nothing could be farther from the truth. Ephesians 5:17 says, “Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.” KJV The Lord wants His children to know His will and that will has been manifested in the person of Jesus Christ who became flesh, and died on the cross, and rose from the dead, to pay for the sins of the world. Through this finished work of the cross, Jesus has bought us back, He has paid for us in full. Christ has provided all we will ever need or want. And he has laid out His will for every man in the inspired and living Word of God known as the Bible. The only way to know God’s will for your life is to read this living Word of God. F. F. Bosworth, in his book “Christ the Healer” says, “Faith begins where the will of God is known”. Do you want to know God’s will for your life?... it’s as close as your Bible. Is it God’s will for me to be healed?...absolutely! It is God’s will for me to prosper?...absolutely! We must come to the conclusion, that God is not only able, but that He is willing. After all, Jesus has already paid the ultimate price for you and me. Our job then is to simply receive what He has provided to us by faith. It is impossible to please God without this! What God provides to us by His grace, we must possess by faith. More on faith next week.To hear more Biblical truths like what we have just discussed, let me extend an invitation to join us on Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m. as we worship the Lord and learn of Him through the teaching of His Word.

Where did Depeche Mode get its name?3. “Black Water” and “What a Fool Believes” were No. 1 U.S. hits for which band?4. Which Beatles song has been covered the most by other artists?5. Which artist released “Pilot of the Airwaves”?6. Which singer released “This Time,” “Girl After Girl,” “Tears From an Angel” and “Island In the Sky?”7. Who wrote and released “Batdance,” and when?

Answers1. The Kinks, in 1964, 1966 and 1967.2. Translated it means “hurry fashion” or “fashion update.” While Depeche Mode had a few singles reach No. 1 in the U.S., they were on the dance charts, not pop.3. The Doobie Brothers, in 1974 and 1979.4. “Yesterday,” placing fourth on the Top 100 list.5. Charlie Dore, in 1980. It was the very last song played on pirate station Radio Caroline, transmit-ting from offshore in the waters off England.6. Troy Shondell, back in the ‘60s. The group Tommy James and the Shondells was named after him, although he was never in that band.7. Prince, in 1989. “Batdance” made it onto the soundtrack for the “Batman” film.

¥ On March 24, 1765, Parliament passes the Quartering Act, which required the colonies to house British soldiers in barracks provided by the colonies, local inns, livery sta-bles, ale houses, uninhabited houses, outhouses or barns. Forcing colonists from their own homes was not the intent of the law.

¥ On March 25, 1911, flames engulf the Triangle Shirtwaist Company factory in New York City, killing 145 workers. Only one elevator was operational in the 10-story building. There were two stairways down to the street, but one was locked from the outside. The inside fire hose was rotted and its valve was rusted shut.

¥ On March 26, 1941, Italy attacks the British fleet at Suda Bay, Crete, using manned torpedoes to sink a Brit-ish cruiser. Known as the “Chariot,” the manned torpedo was ridden by “pilots” to “drive” them to their targets in the harbor.

¥ On March 23, 1962, Pakistan’s governor, Ayub Khan, gives first lady Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy a horse she nicknames “Black Jack.” Jackie chose “Black Jack” to serve as the ceremonial riderless horse during Pres. Kennedy’s funeral.

POOF and the light goes off

An 86-year-old man goes for a physical. All of his test results come back normal. The doctor says, "Eddie everything looks great. How are you doing mentally and emotionally? Are you at peace with God?"

Eddie replies, "God and I are tight. He knows I have poor eyesight, so he's fixed it so when I get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, *poof* the light goes on. When I'm done, *poof* the light goes off."

"Wow, that's incredible," the doctor says.

A little later in the day, the doctor calls Eddie's wife. "Carolyn, he says, Eddie is doing fine but I had to call you because I'm in awe of his relationship with God. Is it true that he gets up during the night and *poof * the light goes on in the bathroom, and when he's done, *poof* the light goes off?"

Never Argue with a Woman One morning, the husband returns the boat to their lakeside cottage after several hours of fishing and de-cides to take a nap. Although not familiar with the lake, the wife decides to take the boat out.

She motors out a short distance, anchors, puts her feet up, and begins to read her book. The peace and solitude are magnificent.

Along comes a Fish and Game Warden in his boat. He pulls up alongside the woman and says, 'Good morning, Ma'am. What are you doing?' 'Reading a book,' she replies, (thinking, 'Isn't that ob-vious?')

'You're in a Restricted Fishing Area,' he informs her.

'I'm sorry, officer, but I'm not fishing. I'm reading.'

'Yes, but I see you have all the equipment.

For all I know you could start at any moment.

I'll have to take you in and write you up.' 'If you do that, I'll have to charge you with sexual as-sault,' says the woman.

'But I haven't even touched you,' says the Game War-den. 'That's true, but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment.' 'Have a nice day ma'am,' and he left.
