The Nanyang Alumni Awards, now in its third year, were presented to 24 high-achieving alumni who have made

their mark in their areas of specialisation at national, regional or international level; or have contributed to the betterment of the University, community or society in a special way.

Each awardee received a specially commissioned trophy and certificate of commendation from Guest of Honour, Mr Abdullah Tarmugi, Speaker of Parliament and NTU President Dr Su Guaning.

A grand homecoming celebration

During his speech, Mr Abdullah said, “Tonight, we celebrate and acknowledge the achievements and contributions of NTU alumni. Your presence is important to these celebrations as you are the pulse of this ever-growing family and your efforts to stay connected with your alma mater continue to add vibrancy and depth to the Nanyang Technological University community.”

“I am confident that you can and will rise to new challenges. As a university with global influence and presence, you have attracted top academics from around the world

and your graduates, well-rounded and entrepreneurial, have done well. Indeed, many are successful and many more have gone on to play significant roles in

the political, social, cultural and economic sectors of Singapore, and internationally,” he added.

To all who were present that evening, Mr Abdullah exhorted them to “Live the Dream”. He said, “Not only your own (dream), but continue to lend your support to your alma mater in its journey towards its vision of a global university of excellence.”

Dr Su thanked alumni for their support throughout the years and updated them on the University’s latest developments. He said, “At the 2007 Convocation, I announced the creation of a Blue Ribbon Commission to review all aspects of undergraduate education at NTU. Our aim is to produce people with a well-rounded education who can be the next generation of problem-solvers and leaders for Singapore and the world.”

“As a Great Global University, we aspire to be known throughout the world for excellence in what we do. Our influence will spread from Singapore to Asia and the whole world. In spreading this influence, our bicultural heritage is a great enabler. With the Nanyang University heritage, we have developed major programmes reaching deep into the elite in China. We are tapping

that experience to develop programmes for India and to link up with Europe and the United States.”

“Enterprise was a dominant characteristic of the Nanyang University founders. We shall continue their spirit of striving in the face of adversity to develop new generations of entrepreneurs infused with the Nantah spirit,” he added.

Dr Su also announced that eight overseas alumni chapters have been established. He said, “In time to come we will have associations in almost every part of the

world, maintaining close ties with our alumni wherever they reside.”

Following the awards presentation ceremony were performances put up by alumni and students from NTU’s Cultural Activities Club. The performances ended on a high note with the grand finale song “Welcome Back” sung by all the 170 performers. Guests were then treated to a feast where they took the opportunity to meet again with old friends from their university days. It was a beautiful night indeed!

Having served in public office from the early days of Singapore’s independence, and to this day continuing to play an active role on the boards of various committees and organisations, Mr Ch’ng Jit Koon’s presence has been felt in diverse sectors and can indeed be said to have made his mark on the very fabric of modern Singapore.

His career in government service spanned 28 years – beginning in 1968 when he was elected as Member of Parliament. He then served in various capacities – in the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry for Community Development – until his retirement from politics in 1996. In honour of his public services, he was conferred several awards and has been an appointed Justice of the Peace since 1998.

Tan Sri Dato’ Lim Guan Teik is nothing short of a household name, credited with pioneering and defining the paper products and packaging industry in Malaysia with the inception of his company, Muda Holdings Berhad. It has the honour of being the first paper-making and paper products company listed on the Malaysian stock exchange. Today, it is one of the largest enterprise groups in the country.

Committing himself to the development of Malaysia’s paper industry beyond his company, he advocated the creation of the Malaysian Pulp & Paper Manufacturer Association in 1985, serving as its President for eight years before being appointed as its Advisor up to this day. He also serves on the

Mr Ch’ng is also an active member of the Singapore business community, serving as director on the boards of numerous public listed and private companies. He is currently the Chairman of Pan-United Corporation Ltd. As a champion of social service communities, he has headed or served on the boards of different institutions. His interest in education has also led him to positions on school boards and committees.

Tan Sri Dato’ Lim graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from Nanyang University in 1961 and has maintained his connection to his alma mater ever since. Armed with a Bachelor of Commerce (Accountancy) degree (1969) and a Bachelor of Commerce (Accountancy) First Class Honours degree (1970) from Nanyang University, Mr Ang went on to obtain a Master of Business Administration with distinction from Northwestern University in the United

States. Returning to Singapore, his career quickly took off, reaching its zenith with his appointment as President of the Singapore Exchange until his retirement in 2006 where he continues to serve as Senior Adviser.

After graduating from Nanyang Technological Institute with a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil and Structural) in 1985, Er Lee Bee Wah worked with Singapore Technologies Construction for nearly 10 years. Teachers lauded for their contributions

The teachers, Mdm Yip Jee Cheng from Mayflower Primary School, Mdm Parameswary d/o Sundar Rajoo

from Montfort Junior School, Mr Yeo Leng Quee from Peirce Secondary School and Mdm Norlita Bte Marsuki from Sembawang Secondary School accepted their awards at the Teachers’ Day reception held at the Istana on 30 August.

The annual President’s Award for Teachers is the nation’s highest accolade in the teaching fraternity. The award recognises the commitment of teachers to the total development of students and to nation-building. It honours the recipients as outstanding teachers who have demonstrated passion, courage and perseverance to inspire and nurture the young.

This year, more than 4,500 nominations for the Award were received from principals, teachers, students, parents and former students. A total of 1,320 teachers from 194 schools were nominated. A selection panel comprising prominent members of the community and senior officers from the Ministry of Education selected the four recipients.

During the ceremony, President Nathan also launched a book to commemorate 50 years of education in Singapore. Entitled Many Pathways, One Mission: Fifty Years of Singapore Education, the commemorative publication tells many stories of the tenacity of our pioneers in education and their contribution towards nation-building. The book also highlights the dedication of past and present leaders and principals, teachers, parents and alumni, as they unite in their efforts to provide the best they can for our children’s education.

Four exemplary teachers received the prestigious President’s Award for Teachers 2007 from President S R Nathan.

Mdm Yip Jee Cheng is the Level Head for Primary 6 at Mayflower Primary School. Her colleagues and pupils admire and respect her for her firm belief in the holistic education of her pupils. Mdm Yip is highly regarded by both her current pupils as well as those whom she taught in the past. They identify her as a teacher who teaches the lessons of life with a strong emphasis on values.

Mdm Parameswary d/o Sundar Rajoo is a Subject Head for Learning Development at Monfort Junior School. Her passion for teaching and her belief in making lessons come alive for her pupils have taken her classes beyond the walls of classrooms. Mdm Parameswary has been instrumental in encouraging her colleagues to transform their teaching and make learning and assessment more purposeful for their pupils.

Mr Yeo Leng Quee is the Head of Department for English Language, Literature and Drama at Peirce Secondary School. He caters to his students varied learning styles through the use of different teaching techniques. Alongside many commendable achievements, he took time to share his experiences at public career seminars and also wrote musicals and surrealistic dramas for the school’s SYF Drama team.

Mdm Norlita Bte Marsuki is the Subject Head for Visual Arts at Sembawang Secondary School. Her passion for the Visual Arts and her belief that Art is an interdisciplinary subject is reflected in the variety of programmes she has initiated in her school and the community. A strong advocate of using Art as a vehicle for character development, Mdm Norlita also uses Art to boost students’ morale and inculcate moral values.

A dynamic leader, Mr Tan Kim Seng, founder and former Executive Chairman of KS Energy Services Limited, has led his company from strength to strength. The same year he graduated from Nanyang University with a Bachelor of Science (Mathematics) in 1974, he started an industrial hardware business before expanding to cater to the international oil and gas, and petrochemical industries. He oversaw the firm’s business strategies and directions, leading to its listing on the SGX-SESDAQ in 1999 and the SGX Mainboard in 2002.

In 2006, the company with offices in China, Vietnam, Thailand, Qatar, the UAE,

USA and Malaysia was ranked 12th in BusinessWeek’s “Top 100 Hot Growth Companies” in Asia, one of the top 200 “Best Under a Billion” companies by Forbes Asia and received Asiamoney’s “Best Corporate Awards for Excellence”. Today, he remains a substantial shareholder of the company.

Mr Tan has also shown concern for the University’s development – he contributed S$1 million to the Wee Kim Wee Legacy Fund, which goes into developing the NTU Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information.

Mr Tan Kim Seng In a business league of his own

When Mr R Sinnakaruppan graduated from Nanyang Technological Institute (NTI) in 1985, he saw the importance of establishing an alumni association. In 1986, the NTI Alumni Association was officially registered. In 1991, Mr Sinnakaruppan was appointed to the NTU Council. He went on to create the first NTU Alumni Club at Bukit Timah in 1994. However, this clubhouse and the subsequent one in River Valley were not viable. In May 2007, his dream finally came true – the new NTU Alumni Club opened at NTU’s one-north campus.

It is this tenacity that has enabled the Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical and Production) graduate to enjoy a successful career. Starting as a

Research and Development Engineer at National Semiconductor in 1985, he won the Foreign and Commonwealth Scholarship and obtained a Master’s at Loughborough University of Technology in 1987. Upon his return, he was seconded to the Economic Development Board. In 1991, he began a 10-year career in politics. During that period, he was also the Managing Director of a start-up company and was Assistant Secretary-General to the National Trades Union Congress. In 1998, he graduated from Harvard University with an Advanced Management Program. He is now a Managing Partner of IndusAge Advisors and Chairman/CEO of Kip McGrath Worldwide Education Centres.

Building a successful careerThe 6th Distinguished Alumni Forum held at the auditorium of NTU’s one-north campus on 17 August 2007 attracted some 150 alumni and students.

Themed “Achieving Success at the Workplace”, the forum was chaired by Mr Ng Boon Hwang, Director

of NTU Career and Attachment Office. The three distinguished alumni present to address the audience – all veterans in the human resources industry – were Mr Lee Kam Choon (Commerce / 1974), Ms Low Peck Kem (EEE / 1986) and Ms Annie Yap Hui Lian (NBS / 1993).

Bringing with him more than 30 years of experience as a human resources professional, Mr Lee, Vice President and Head of Human Resources Group, Sony China Ltd, spoke at length about the factors which may influence and shape one’s success in his or her career. He also touched on the various yardsticks that may be used to measure that success.

Ms Low, former Vice President of Human Resources, Asia Pacific Avago Technologies, deliberated on the definition of success at the workplace. Her lively and spirited presentation on how success and happiness mean different things to different people drew much laughter from the appreciative audience.

The final speaker for the evening, Ms Annie Yap, Chief Executive Officer, The GMP Group, gave an inspiring testimony of her success at GMP. Noting that there are benefits of working in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), Ms Yap stressed that SMEs are no longer small family set-ups; rather, some of them have established themselves as goliaths in their respective industries.

The end of the presentations signalled the start of the much anticipated panel discussion. The audience raised many interesting questions and was well rewarded with meaningful answers from the speakers and the forum chairman. As the discussion finally drew to a close, the audience expressed their appreciation for the speakers with a big round of applause.

The fantastic weather and the scenic Seletar Country Club provided the perfect setting for NTU’s first President’s Golf Challenge.

More than 130 golfers, comprising university staff, faculty, alumni, business partners, friends and students, took to the greens on 22 August. Spirits were high and everyone was in good form.

The NTU Board of Trustees, including Chairman Mr Koh Boon Hwee and board members Mr Chia Ban Seng, Mr Goh Geok Ling and Mr Michael Lim Choo San, were spotted on the courses, together with Mr Patrick Daniel, Editor-in-Chief of Singapore Press Holdings’ (SPH) English and Malay Newspapers Division.

Divided into 33 flights, the golfers had a good time mingling while trying to make par on the 18-hole course, with a gleaming new Mercedes Benz waiting for the golfer who could make a hole-in-one.

Mr Anthony Teo, Secretary to the University and Chairman of the Organising Committee, was in a buoyant mood, encouraged by the enthusiastic support received for the event. He said, “We hope to keep the NTU President’s Golf Challenge going for many years to come.”

Accountancy student Eugene Seah outplayed the many seasoned golfers and walked away with the championship trophy. Eugene, who is President of the NTU Golf Club, also netted the prize for making the longest drive. Mr Mohamed Redhza Bin Abdul Rahim, a student from the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies and Assoc Prof Joseph Kang from the Nanyang Business School bagged the second and third prize respectively.

At the dinner and prize presentation ceremony held after the tournament, NTU President Dr Su Guaning said that the tournament was more than a game of golf, as it served as an

Profiling the Death Valley conquerorsNTU alumni Lim Nghee Huat and Yong Yuen Cheng talk about their Death Valley experience and give us a glimpse into their lives and their thoughts.

Two years ago, two strangers met for the first time, united in the goal of completing the longest ever distance

running event held in Singapore – Run Round Singapore 2005, an NTU 50th anniversary celebratory event covering 168km.

Two years later, in July 2007, these same two men, Lim Nghee Huat and Yong Yuen Cheng, successfully completed yet another feat – the Death Valley Challenge in California, USA. They are the first two runners from Singapore and Southeast Asia to complete the 217km run within 55 hours, a run which involved traversing three mountain ranges with a cumulative elevation of about 4,000m, and extreme desert temperatures.

Recounting the most gruelling part of the challenge, Nghee Huat says, “The toughest part was when I injured my leg and couldn’t run because with every step I took, I could feel the pain. I still don’t know how I got through that. But even when I was walking with my stick, I wanted to treasure every moment!”

For Yuen Cheng, having trained for the heat, he was taken aback by the cold. “When I was going up the first peak, the temperature dropped suddenly at night and the wind was very strong. At first I didn’t even realise that I was feeling cold, and then

I developed a cough. My body deteriorated. I was on the verge of collapse.”

But, mustering all their strength and with the encouragement from the support crew, both men conquered the perilous Death Valley, and in the process succeeded not only to raise funds for National

Junior College and Mountbatten Citizens’ Consultative Committee, they also became an inspiration to many.

Nghee Huat, a graduate from Nanyang University (Commerce / 1975), is presently a Current Affairs Editor at Mediacorp. His illustrious successes in professional sports may make us think that running is in his blood, but he says that it was only in university that this interest developed.

“How did I start running? I was studying hard every day and at the end of the day, I had nothing much to do. So one day, I made my way to the football field and saw people running. I started running as well and I thought to myself that perhaps I can be a good runner. I was about 18 then. I had no special training in running, I just picked it up!”

This focused s p o r t s m a n , characterised by his never-say-die spirit, went on to win the “Sportsman of the Year” award in his second year.

He says, “I told myself that if I can have the same kind of spirit, even after graduation, I should be able to overcome any difficulty I encounter.”

For Yuen Cheng, a teacher at National Junior College and a graduate from NIE’s Class of 1997, his days at NIE taught him pedagogy and made him ponder on the kind of image a teacher should project to students. He hopes that he has set a good example through the Death Valley challenge. “From what my students say, I know what I have done is meaningful. They learnt a lot about challenges and about life. They saw me at my worst, not just my best. I can also share with them the life lessons I have gained,” he notes.

Their next challenge? Possibly a 1,000km run, perhaps from Thailand to Singapore! And they hope that it will fund a good cause. “Our life must be a blessing to others,” Nghee Huat says, “I want to run for a good cause and inspire people to take up exercise!” As for Yuen Cheng, he just wants people to know that “no matter how ordinary one is, one can succeed”. He says, “People think these kinds of things are for the elite or the gifted, but I am just an ordinary runner. I just want to do something for people less fortunate than me.”

It was a tough challenge but our heroes made it!

A Reunion of Friends September was a nostalgic month for our alumni. For three consecutive Saturdays, joint anniversary reunions were held at the Nanyang Auditorium foyer. In all, close to 600 alumni and their families, together with staff, attended the three separate celebrations on the 8th, 15th and 22nd.

“It’s great to be back! This is the place where I got my degree and had lots of fun in the halls and during my extra-curricular activities. It’s really interesting to see all the familiar and not-so-familiar buildings after all these years.”

Mr Wilson Tan (NBS / 1997)

Memories revisited8 September was a day of celebration for nearly 200 alumni from the Classes of 1987, 1992, 1997 and 2002. Many returned to the campus with their families to celebrate their 20th, 15th, 10th and 5th reunion anniversaries respectively.

Guest of Honour, Mr Teo Ser Luck, Parliamentary Secretary for Community Development, Youth and Sports; Dr Su Guaning, President of NTU; Mr Anthony Teo, Secretary

to the University; Professor Cham Tao Soon, President Emeritus, NTU; together with other distinguished guests, were present at the momentous occasion.

Mr Teo, an alumnus from the Nanyang Business School, Class of 1992, expressed his pleasure at coming back to NTU and exhorted his fellow alumni to support the University in achieving its vision. “Undoubtedly, the achievements and successes we make define us and what NTU graduates stand for. Through our contributions to the community, I am sure that we will continue to forge a meaningful connection with our alma mater,” he said.

Dr Su spoke on the role of the alumni: “Our alumni are our ambassadors. Long after graduating, you continue to carry

the torch of the University. Whether great or small, your contribution plays a significant part in shaping NTU into a great global university.”

The reunion was organised by a committee of alumni volunteers, led by Mr Lim Sui Soon, School of Mechanical and Production Engineering, Class of 1987. A strong believer in maintaining links with his alma mater, Mr Lim said, “We have enjoyed the fruits of labour of this campus, and many more will. I urge you to continue to render support to NTU in any way possible. We must maintain our connection with NTU.”

Alumni who returned were treated to a series of professional workshops and seminars. They also witnessed the laying of the class plaques at the Quad. Guests enjoyed a high tea reception, followed by a campus tour where they witnessed first hand the changing face of the physical campus.

The Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information had reasons to be doubly happy at its

15th anniversary dinner held this year – it was also the 10th anniversary of its pioneer batch’s graduation.

More than 400 guests, consisting of current and former faculty and staff, alumni as well as industry partners, turned up for the event. Also there to grace the occasion was Founding Dean, Professor Eddie Kuo.

The Organising Committee, headed by Assistant Professor Dr Brenda Chan, took great effort to plan the entire event. “I hope that at the end of the day, everyone’s going to have a good time and enjoy themselves, and that they will remember this event as something very special for our School,” said an excited Dr Chan.

The evening commenced with Chair Dr Ang Peng Hwa’s opening address. In his speech, Dr Ang highlighted the School’s accomplishments in both the media industry as well as in academia, stressing that the faculty was now stronger than ever in its research. “We are one of the very few schools where undergraduates attend conferences that are usually attended by masters and PhD students,” said Dr Ang.

Updates on the Wee Kim Wee Legacy Fund were also provided. The funding, which has grown to an impressive $28 million, is being used to run projects such as “Going Overseas for Advanced Reporting” (GO-

The celebration continued with congratulatory speeches from Prof Seah and Mr Soon, as well as entertaining games that filled the room with laughter. And for the few lucky ones who walked away with the attractive lucky draw prizes, it was indeed a perfect evening for them.

Here’s wishing all of the graduates every success as they embark on their next phase in life.

The dinner rounded off with a lucky draw where several guests walked away with prizes such as a NEC laptop, an iPod nano, a Sony Playstation and a 2 days/1 night Batam and Bintan tour. These prizes were sponsored by NEC Singapore, EEE Alumni Association and NTU Alumni Club.

A party for all SCE graduates to come together and celebrate! To a lifelong relationship!

The big happy family of SCE’s Class of 2007

A Latin dance kept the guests entertained. Let’s toast to greater times ahead!

All in all, it was a good party, with many graduates promising each other to stay in touch. Though their student days at NTU have come to an end, a lifelong relationship has now begun as they become part of the alumni family.

HAPPENINGS26 HAPPENINGS 27

A night to remember the good old timesThemed “An Old School Affair”, the Nanyang Business School’s (NBS) Convocation Ball 2007 was held at the Fullerton Hotel on 28 July.

Less than a week after receiving their bachelor’s degrees, the Class of 2007 graduates gathered together

once again for another celebratory affair – their convocation ball. Decked out in smart suits and donning elegant dresses, the ball saw some 420 graduates and guests turn up in glamour and style.

A ballof a timeOrganised by the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) for its Class of 2007 graduands, the graduation dinner was held at the Conrad Centennial Hotel on 27 July.

After four years of hard work, the MAE graduates were determined to have their fun and enjoyment for the evening. And judging by the joyful expressions on their faces, their

graduation dinner was indeed an unforgettable one.

Close to 350 graduates and guests attended the special occasion, which was graced by Professor Lam Khin Yong, Chair, MAE. Other distinguished guests included Mr Soon Min Yam, Director of Alumni Affairs Office, the Associate and Assistant Chairs, Presidents of MAE Alumni Association and MAE Club, and the MAE faculty.

The evening commenced with a cocktail reception where guests were entertained by live piano music played by one of MAE’s very own graduates. Dressed in their best attire and flashing wide smiles, the new graduates imprinted their signatures in the guest book and chatted with one another, reminiscing about their life in NTU.

In his speech, Prof Lam emphasised the importance of being versatile in the working world and keeping a strong network of friends. He advised the graduands to stay in touch with the University, the School and their lecturers, and proposed that they consult the School should they aspire to further their studies or receive more training in their area of work. Prof Lam reminded the audience that with more than 150 staff, the School can provide a variety of expertise in mechanical and aerospace engineering. He was presented with the Signature Book by Mr Ricson Low, the Student Coordinator of the Dinner Committee.

Fun and games followed throughout the lavish dinner, with some very lucky graduates going home with more than just a full stomach! But all took back memories to last a lifetime and inspiration to open the next chapter in life with gusto.

Guests who arrived early that evening were treated to a cocktail reception. Graduates took the chance to catch up with friends and lecturers as they were entertained by pre-dinner activities such as crystal tattooing, caricature, silhouette cutting and the performance of the magician, Han Long.

To start the dinner, guests were shown an opening video clip followed by a magic show titled “Mysteriously Magical” by Jason Law who customised his magic tricks to suit the theme of the night. Amidst the food, drinks and camaraderie, the graduates also had a ball of a time participating in various games and watching a Lindy Hop dance performance. There was even a dance competition titled “Man & Lady of the Night”.

Rounding off the night was another video clip that evoked, in the graduates and guests, three years of bittersweet memories in NBS. The evening ended with the lucky draw segment which was eagerly anticipated by the attendees. The ball was indeed a night to remember!

Professor Lam Khin Yong (right), Chair of MAE, receiving the Signature Book It was a night to remember! Female graduates and Dezlee Han, the emcee for the night, during Mass Games Everyone enjoyed playing the entertaining games.

The team of enthusiastic anglers, including members from the NTU Anglers’ Club, set off on a 2-day

Mohamed Abdul Akbar (CEE / 1986)

After graduation, Akbar started as a construction engineer then became a project manager and now is a Managing Director of an engineering company. He also runs a Malay heritage restaurant, Tepak Sireh, located at Sultan Gate. He served as a panellist for the 2005 NTU Distinguished Alumni Forum on Entrepreneurship in Singapore and was on the organising committee for his Class of 1986 20th Anniversary Reunion.

Lim Tien Siang (SCE / 1993)

“It’s been years since I last ‘connected’ with NTU. I have been married for more than 10 years and have 3 wonderful sons. Recent NTU alumni activities like the basic fishing course and kelong trip have opened up an avenue for father-and-son bonding. My son also caught his first fish at the recent fishing course. He really felt the care and concern shown by the organisers. We look forward to more alumni activities and I hope to meet some old friends during the activities.”

Chui Kah Wai, Faith (NBS / 1995)

“I have been working hard since graduating. Initially, my goal was to pursue career advancement. But now, I aspire to achieve a more balanced lifestyle. My job has been enriching – I have had the opportunity to gain greater exposure with overseas assignments. For about one and a half years, I was required to make an overseas trip each month. That experience not only helped me gain more people skills, it also made me a stronger and more confident person. I am thankful that I have a good boss, and good colleagues who are always encouraging and supportive. Looking back at my years in NTU, I must say that I’m most grateful for the friends I made during that time – they are the best; my lifelong friends. Even now, we still catch up regularly.”

Lau Yao Ming, Kelvin(NBS / 1997)

“Despite having an Accountancy degree, I am now managing a chemistry lab. I spent 5 years in Houston, Texas, where my first son was born, so he is an American citizen. I have been married to another NTU alumna for 7 years, and recently we welcomed our second son. While in NTU, I stayed at Halls 6 and 9 and had an enjoyable time!”

Tan Sye Yin, Jolene(WKWSCI / 1998)

“It is coming to a decade since we graduated from a school which name now only exists in the annals and our memories. How many of us can state with any aplomb that we can remember most of our classmates and their names? Perhaps a ‘CS101 + 10 Years Graduation Mumbo Night’ next year will be a night for us to get to know each other all over again. We will knock something out, and once we get some sense of the numbers (wives, husbands, boyfriends, girlfriends, children), we’ll let everyone know where to ‘chiong’. Send us your emails at [email protected] and let’s see how far we can go with this.”

Tey Leong Hua (EEE / 2000)

“A warm greeting to all my old classmates! I wonder how all of you are! We have not met for such a long time as all of us are busy with our career and family. I really miss our undergraduate life together. Nevertheless, life has to move on. I am currently a lecturer at Ngee Ann Polytechnic and I am glad to share my joy with all of you on my new family member - my very cute baby daughter. Hope that memories will roll in after you read my note, and do keep in touch. Cheers!”

Lim Eng Boon (CEE / 2002)

“Time really flies! 5 years have passed since the day of my graduation but best friends can withstand the test of time. Really miss my fun school days. We have all been busy with our endeavours in our personal lives in pursuits of love and career. Gatherings and chats are less frequent and friends are not as close as before. I hope I can organise a gathering to reminisce about old times. I have just entered another important phase of my life – marriage. I am glad to have a caring and supportive wife who has stood by my side during the ups and downs of my life. We shall be each other’s support for the rest of our lives. After settling down, it is time to plan ahead and look forward to challenges to come. Ready or not, here I come!”

Li Yuan (EEE / 2002)

“I‘ve been in Singapore for 10 years, including three and a half years doing my PhD in NTU. Now it’s time to pursue a new career on another side of the Pacific. I

will bring along the NTU spirit with me: 自强不息。Hopeto

keepintouchwithmyNTUfriends!”

Lim Kok Fai (EEE / 2002)

“I am currently working in a semiconductor company, ST Micron, and I have been here for 3 years. Today I can see that NTU has changed much since I graduated 5 years ago. I see many new buildings and disciplines, and new courses being offered. It’s an exciting time for the future generation!”

Naing Naing Aung (MAE / 2002)

“After receiving a scholarship from NTU, I came here in 1999 to pursue my Master of Engineering and went to complete my PhD. I joined MAE Graduates’ Club and have been a member since 2006. I must say that my experience at the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering has given me a solid foundation in all areas of engineering. I’ve also made many good friends here; NTU is like my second home!”

Low Chun-Jin, Alfred (NBS / 2002)

“It is unbelievable how the mind can compress time and space. It’s been 5 years since graduation, yet it seems like just yesterday that I left the school! Keep in touch with your fellow graduates! As an individual, you are special, but as a collective, we are a true force to be reckoned with – a force that will only grow as each individual moves forward in life.”

Jayakrishnan Balachandran (WKWSCI / 2002)

“Doing the MSc (Information Studies) course at NTU was a good experience in many ways. Apart from the academic knowledge gained, and recognition at the work place, it also provided me with exposure to local culture, the flavours of campus life, and the thrill of going through student life once again. I am currently working at Barclays Capital as an

Associate Director in the IT division. In time I will be visiting again as part of corporate recruitment events.”

Nishith Prabhakar (SCE / 2003)

“I am Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Imfinity Pte Ltd, a software services and technology consulting firm I started with 3 other close friends from SCE’s Class of 2003. Now we have a 35-member strong development centre in NOIDA (Delhi, India) and a sales and marketing office in Silicon Valley, US. The majority of our customers are independent software vendors. Imfinity works closely with them to innovate and modernise their software products. As the CTO, I am always passionate about technology, obsessively trying to figure out the shape it is going to take within the next 5-10 years. My role in the company includes providing technology vision for various client products – adopting the most cutting-edge solutions available.”

Soh Lip Hong (CEE / 2004)

“I am currently employed at CPG airport, managing the completion stage of Changi Airport’s Terminal 3. Everything is on-track and many tenants have been pouring in, making our work really busy. In the last few weeks, I managed to have a close look at the A380 jumbo. It’s really beautiful. Besides the hectic work, I am also doing architectural illustrations at www.3darchiscapedesign2.com. It’s the place to release all my tension and place my hands on the drawing board (oops, I mean computer and mouse). I married Zhu Lian on 5 February 2006, became a happy father of Sin Yee on 23 May 2007, and we will be getting our eco-friendly Punggol flat in 2011. Next year, I’m also bringing a small group to backpack in Yunnan, China. Interested friends, please contact me!”

Wu Shangyuan (WKWSCI / 2004)

“Three years after I started my job as a broadcast journalist at Mediacorp Radio, I am bidding farewell to everything that is familiar to me in Singapore and heading to Canada for a two-year Masters programme in Communications. It is something that I have always wanted to do – to go away and experience a whole new life someplace else. My exchange programme to Cornell University in 2003 gave me my first taste of that, and I have been itching to experience that again ever since. People ask me why I opted for the same field of study as my

undergraduate course. My reply is simple – it would not be the same. This time, I will have my three years of real-world journalistic experience in tow, which I hope can help me gain a better perspective of things. Hopefully, two years down the road, I will return as a better journalist and a better person.”

Taiyabi Ahmad Shadab (SCE / 2005)

“I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering and a Minor in Business from NTU in July 2005. I went on to work for the Monetary Authority of Singapore as a Policy Analyst thereafter and held this position until September 2006. I also took up the Master of Science in Financial Engineering course at NTU in July 2005 and graduated in July 2007. Currently I am working at Reuters Asia Pte Ltd as a Desktop Design Consultant and have been with this company since October 2006. In my past 6 years of association with the University, I have seen a lot of changes in academics, campus life and alumni relations. The Alumni Affairs Office is doing a great job in building relationships not just with distinguished senior alumni, but with fresh graduates as well. This will surely lay a strong foundation for greater and more personal alumni support in the years to come.”

Erico Coelho (Air Liquide Executive Development / 2006)

“I am the Brazil Sales Manager Vital Aire - AIR LIQUIDE and am responsible for the Homecare area in Air Liquide Brazil. I joined the Air Liquide group in 1995 and we currently have more than 7,000 patients in treatment. The alumni process is an excellent way to explore personal experiences and I am proud to participate in this select group. In fact, everybody has the obligation of keeping the alumni spirit alive with regular contributions. In this regard, I am proud to play my part!”

Chia Chun Sian, Aaron (CEE / 2007)

“My heartfelt thanks to all CEE staff (lecturers, lab technicians and administrative staff) for your guidance and support during my period of study in NTU. Thank you!”

Tan Yi Ling, Odelia (EEE / 2007)

“I would like to thank those people who helped me in my

three years of NTU life – especially Asst Prof Chong Han Joo Peter, Assoc Prof So Ping Lam (FYP supervisors) and Tianxing (Buddy). Thank you!”

Goh Wei Cheng (MAE / 2007)

“My deepest gratitude and appreciation to my professors, academic and administrative staff from MAE. I regret that my academic tenure has come to an end, but the memories and experience here with all of you have made it a lasting and memorable chapter of my life. I am glad and proud to have been under your tutelage. I wish you all a successful future, and may your glories never dim.”

Soh Guanxiang (NBS / 2007)

To NTU: “Thank you for enlightening me that a basic degree is not enough for success, but that experience and open-mindedness are required too. I will continue to work hard and make the most out of my life. Cheers!”

Mohd Saidali Bin Ali (NIE / 2007)

To all my lecturers in BA (Education) Malay Specialisation: “Thank you for making my academic life so enriching and meaningful! Cikgu-cikgu yang saya hormati, segala pengorbanan dan keikhlasan cikgu-cikgu tidak akar dilupakan!”

Zhang Yi (SCBE / 2007)

“Many thanks to the Biomedical Engineering department – especially to Prof Ling Chang Ming and Prof Wang Tong An, who helped me a lot.”

Leong Lai Cheong, Cynthia (WKWSCI / 2007)

“My sincere thanks to Prof Chris Khoo for his patience and his uncompromisingly-high hopes for us.”
