Pictured is the World’s smallest crawler crane. The URW-094, manufactured by UNIC Cranes Europe. This crane is only 23 inches wide, but has a lifting capacity of nearly 1 ton. The crane can drive through most normal sized door openings and has a maximum working radius of 17 feet with an 18 foot boom.

ADMINISTRATIVE PROFILE

Isabel Shearin has been with W. O. Grubb since 1988. She has come to be recognized as one of the familiar voices of our company. Her sweet, charming, and sweet voice is usually the first thing you hear when you call the Richmond office. Often, when people don’t hear her paging over the intercom, it starts a firestorm of questions about where is Izzy and is she alright. “I came to work with Grubb so that I could help out Tom. Originally, my duties included helping him with his Steel Erection bids, answering the phones, sorting the mail and ordering office supplies.” She tells me that she really enjoys her time here at the office. “The people are always so nice to work with; they are all helpful, friendly and kind.”

Before she became such an important part of the Grubb team, Isabel had been working for Old Dominion Iron and Steel. “For years I had been their switchboard operator, I also handled certifications for their tanks and sorted their mail as well.” She was employed with Old Dominion until they were sold to Adamson. She told me a little bit about her time with Dominion working on Belles Isle, where she worked there until a massive storm destroyed the bridge to the small piece of land in the James River.

When Ms. Shearin isn’t manning the front desk at our corporate office, she can be found cooking and shopping. Another favorite past time of hers is gospel music. Occasionally, she will make a trek down to Smithfield, North Carolina for their gospel festival. She also enjoys her time with her two granddaughters, Ashley and Graham.

Safety Corner

When rigging, consideration must be given to the type of rigging that is best suited for a particular Lift.Polyester round slings or “Continuous Straps” as they are sometimes referred to, are light weight and easy to handle, but in some cases are not the correct choice. That is why a complete review of the piece to be lifted must be performed to identify any potential cutting, pinching, abrading or friction burning of the rigging material. If any of the above mentioned could possibly occur, then wire rope chokers/slings may be the preferred rigging equipment over synthetic slings.A must in any rigging application is having sufficient softeners/sling protection to protect the rigging equipment from damage, especially when you are rotating a load in a basket hitch configuration. When a load is rotated in a basket hitch and synthetic slings are used, there is a greater potential for friction burns and/or cutting of material even when softeners are used. Wire rope is more forgiving in this situation.

Conclusion:Synthetic slings, round continuous, eye to eye or flat straps are good rigging devices, but in some cases they just can’t replace wire rope.“Evaluate the rigging attachment points for potential hazards prior to selecting the rigging”“Read the manufacturers warnings, inspection, care and use instructions prior to use”

Since the early 1970’s Kenny Cooke has helped this company rise from only 7 operators and 6 cranes, to become the 18th largest crane company in the Nation. He started in June of 1973 as an oiler on an old 35 ton Lorain. “Wayne Roberts and John Grubb became mentors early on. They were really some of the best educators, and taught me things that still hold true.” After a year of oiling for Wayne, Kenny started hanging iron as an operator. Through-out the years he’s held several other positions with the company. He flipped back and forth from operator to dispatch until 1988 when Bill Grubb asked him to go into sales. “At that time Fred Testerman and I were the only salesmen. Our biggest challenge was to rent some of our older equipment.” As the company expanded, Kenny took on the role as the Richmond Branch Manager. He has since transitioned that role to Cecil Wilmoth.

Kenny had a lot to say about working for the Grubb team. “I can’t stress how important it is to work as a team, every link really does count.” He goes on to say, “We have one of the best teams, with some of the best people you’ll ever meet. But, we have to continue to work to as a team, there are no super stars.” He closes by telling me, “this Company is fortunate to have the visionary of Bill Grubb. He strives to be the best and has given us all so much.”

In his free time Kenny enjoys working on his farm, entertaining friends, family, hunting, fishing, and generally getting dirty. He loves his house on the river where he raises chickens, works in his garden, and enjoys boating. Now that he has decided to step down, he is looking forward to traveling around the county and visiting Norway and Morocco.

The team from Fredericksburg uses Doug Radcliffe on the Grove GMK 7550, 550 ton All Terrain Crane, to hoist an 8 inch bag gun. The crew lifted, transported and set the gun from its original location in Dahlgren to the Virginia Historical Museum. The gun, which is from an old 1880s Ironsides warship, is being displayed at the museum.

It is extremely important that all operators, and drivers thoroughly know their equipment. An extra

emphasizes should be placed on reading and understanding your

operating manual. The operating manual is an invaluable tool to show

the right steps to operating, maintaining and installing

accessories for your crane. The manual will answer many questions

about several things such as: Installing jibs, trouble shooting

simple problems, providing limitations for your unit, and ensuring

that the equipment is used and maintained properly. Knowing the

book is important for safety, preventing unnecessary damage, keeping it in good condition, and

completing a job in a timely manner. It will also prevent you from

constantly requiring assistance with your unit, and preventing avoidable

problems. Also, please keep in mind that it is everyone’s job to ensure

that the job is being performed safely and properly.

Given our increased focus on safety standards this year, Chuck and Jim are scheduling “All Hands” meetings at each of our branches to communicate our current state, some safety program changes and to stress the importance of maintaining the highest safety standards. Please see the schedule below and get back to Jim with any questions. We need as close to 100% participation from all branch field and office staffs as is possible, so the schedule has the meetings as either early morning breakfast meetings or early evening dinner meetings. We ask that each branch take responsibility to communicate the schedule to all employees as soon as possible and to make arrangements for the food, beverages and place of meeting appropriate for each branch.
