Baptist Church finds itsMatch!

Finding a new minister of a church hasbeen likened to speed dating.Ruddington Baptist Church has beenwithout a minister for two years, duringwhich it has reflected, assessed, prayed, and dated to find a leader to take thechurch forward on a new spiritualadventure. The result has been asurprise. Earlier this year, the churchfound its match in Sam Hackett. In September, Sam was inducted as thenew minister, the youngest inNottingham. He says, 'I am reallypassionate about building a communityin which all people are loved andrespected.’

Sam has recently graduated fromCardiff University, where he studiedReligious Studies and Theology. He is aself-confessed sport fanatic, and playedhockey for South Wales. He is a peopleperson, and sees this as a key tobuilding relationship between the churchand community groups, businesses, aswell as the other two churches in thevillage. ‘I have really enjoyed my firstmonth as the minister of RuddingtonBaptist Church and look forward tospending more time getting to knoweveryone involved with making thisvillage such a great place.'

Ruddington Baptist Church abandonedits traditional church building in 2007and currently meets in the YoungPeople’s Centre on the Green inRuddington, in line with its vision to bepart of the community and to be ablessing in it by supporting people of allages wherever they find life difficult. Some of the ways Ruddington BaptistChurch does this is through:

· Nappacinos – a weekly group fornew Mums and their babies 0-12months

· Oasis – a support group for parentswho have children with specialneeds (meeting once a month)

· Horlicks – a monthly lunchtimegroup for elderly residents lookingfor fun and friendship

· The Noise in Ruddington – acommunity action weekend, whichthis year attracted over 100volunteers from among the localchurches and businesses to helpwith gardening, painting anddecorating for residents strugglingto maintain their property.

· The Alpha course – joining with StPeter’s Church to run a 10 weekcourse for anyone who wants tolearn more about God.

Sam and the Church are excited by thisnew partnership. Sam says: 'Now youhave seen my picture alongside thisarticle, if you see me out and aboutplease come and introduce yourself tome and have a chat. I would love to getto know you better.'

Connecting local businessesin Ruddington

The Ruddington Business Partnership isan informal networking group whichmeets on the third Friday of the month, with the aim of bringing local businessestogether. The group has been runningfor more than three years. During thistime the meetings have been hosted byPhilos in Ruddington; a great local cafewith delicious cakes and friendly service. We would like to thank Philos and itsstaff for being such great hosts for allthese years.

However, as the group continues togrow we have decided to move ourmonthly meetings to The RuddingtonArms; a local pub which recentlyunderwent a transformativerefurbishment. In September we held aone-off lunchtime meeting at TheRuddington Arms which was a greatsuccess! This new venue provides a bigger spaceto accommodate for the continual growthof the group and also has free parking onsite. Mark and Sarah, the owners of theRuddington Arms, say they are lookingforward to welcoming us and to hostingthe events going forward, and we wouldlike to thank them for agreeing to openearly for us so that we can keep our

Huge Response to the Trafficand Transport survey

The Parish Council has got some reallyhelpful information from the Traffic andTransport survey, and a few new ideasabout how to deal with what the publicseem to see as Ruddington’s biggestissue, traffic and transport. The first stage of the survey is nowclosed but you will all have yet anotheropportunity to comment when we haveanalysed the findings and when we writeour own Traffic and Transport Plan. Thatwill then be presented to RushcliffeBorough and the County Council, bothof which currently have control overmany of the things that we would like toinfluence.

Not everyone appreciated all of thequestions, but they came from what youhad asked us about. Please rememberthat it is not a poll, it is a survey. Factshave been gleaned from it but alsoevidence of attitudes about a number ofmatters. The number of responses received on-line was very heartening, and thatmakes it easy for us to handle theresults. The door-to-door delivery hasbeen, according to some reports, patchy. If you did not get a paper copyand did not complete the survey on-lineyou can still contribute your thoughts,we’ll never turn it away.Councillor Nick Tegerdine

Is Ruddington the newWest Bridgford?

Well – possibly not – as we still like tothink of ourselves as a rather morecharacterful village! However recentchanges to Ruddington’s many eatingand drinking outlets could easily makeus the destination of choice over andabove our bigger neighbour. Even sinceour last Newsletter TWO villagerefreshment venues have reopened.

Firstly, after shutting for the summer,McArtney’s received an offer to takeover the running of their bar and bistrofrom John Noble and Max Harman ofThe Three Crowns. “We were looking tocreate a more exclusive andcontemporary wine and tapas venue inour village, and this opportunity justcame up”, explains John. And if thecrowds queuing for cocktails on the 2nd

of October were anything to go by theymay well have succeeded! “We’verestyled the interior to include more high‘poseur’ chairs and tables suited todrinking and light snacks, new décor andlighting, and a new name – Bar Six. I’llmainly be running this place, with newbusiness partner Lucy Would, whilstMax continues to take care of the tophouse”.

“Yes, it’s no longer a restaurant” saysLucy “though we do offer a changing, blackboard selection of sharing plattersand finger food for people to nibble onwhilst they drink. We’ve a great range ofwine and speciality cocktails, too. BarSix is a place people can just pop into fora drink and a chat. We’re open everyday except Monday”.If real ale and tradition are more yourthing then you’re already spoilt forchoice in our many existing village inns.

And it’s just got even better! Thecompletely refurbished Bricklayers’Arms reopened on Hallowe’en - not onlynow with five hand-pumps on the bar butanother 20 cask ales to choose fromoutside in their attractive, new, elevatedbeer garden. It’s hoped the cool£150,000 investment will transform itsprospects into another destination forthe discerning drinker. The pub is now privately owned, and not

run by a big pubco, with Richard Harveyand Barney Coombes taking on thelease. New landlady Sonia Day isalready well known in the village fromher time at both The Victoria Tavern andWhite Horse:“We hope people like our new-look pub.As well as changes on the outside we’veredone the interior in a “brickies” themebut it’s still a proper, traditional pub witha comfy, carpeted lounge and anextended Public Bar. We’ll haveoccasional ‘live’ music, a TV, pool tableand private functions in there” sheexplains “but the Lounge Bar iscompletely separate and designed forcomfortable drinking and conversation -with no TV or music – and hopefully areal fire in the winter! We’re majoring onbeers from local breweries such asCastle Rock, Navigation and LincolnGreen. ”

The new-look Bricklayers’ Arms offersrolls, sandwiches, paninis, cakes, teasand coffees. It’s also an adult pub withno children or dogs allowed.“But” says Sonia “contrary to recentrumours, people wearing jeans WILLstill be let in!”By Graham Wright

Do you remember me?This was “Rudd” the “roving reporter” who was part of the newsletter team led byLorna McCullough when she launched “The Rudd” in November 1991.With the demise of the Parish Magazine from St Peter’s Church and the “VillageNews”, which covered all South Notts villages, there was no longer a localnewsletter , until “The Rudd” arrived.

It was published for 17 years until November 2008. Duringthat period it had 2 editors, Lorna and then Chris Murden, who took over in 2003. Its format was predominantly A4size and the first 2 copies were delivered to everyhousehold for free, courtesy of a grant from the ParishCouncil. Subsequently, it was sold in various outlets in thevillage. 20p bought you a fortnightly copy for several yearsbut as it increased in content the price increased and itwent to a monthly publication in its later years. In 1992 it won the Rural Community Council VillageNewsletter of the year award. In the first issue Derek Kennedy welcomed it as an“informative vehicle that keeps villagers updated onevents- happenings- gossip etc”The desire to have a publication just for Ruddingtonremained post 2008. In January 2010 the Parish Council

responded to the demand by launching the “Village newsletter”The current editorial team consists of the Parish Clerk, Parish Councillors andlocal residents. We actively encourage anyone to submit articles for possibleinclusion to maintain the ethos of an “informative vehicle”. It is produced monthlyin an A5 format and is available for free from various outlets. On average 1200 arepicked up each month. It is also published on the Parish Council website. We thank Lorna for her vision. If you want to read issues of “The Rudd “ they areavailable as reference copies in the village Library, as are back copies of thecurrent newsletter.By Barbara Breakwell
