Celebrating

The beginnings of Aqua Aerobics as an activity at Burnie Brae goes back to 1992 when a small group of enthusiasts went to an outdoor pool in Kitchener Road. Being an outdoor pool, the activity was held only during the warm weather, so another venue had to be found, and Rigby’s Pool at Everton Hills looked like a good choice. A small bus was hired from the Rotary Club to take members to the pool every Friday but this came to end four years later when a landslide occurred leaving the pool unavailable for a time. A short term solution in the form of Albany Creek pool followed, but eventually an ideal venue presented itself, when the Chermside Pool opened an indoor hydrotherapy pool and our ‘aqua’ participants found their nal and long lasting venue. Participant numbers grew so rapidly in the lovely (warm) hydrotherapy pool and a new Wednesday group com-menced and a few years later, Monday Aqua Aerobics came into being.

As you may be aware the government announced numerous changes to superannuation and Social Security in the recent budget, so I thought I’d discuss some of these changes in this newsletter.

Contributing the proceeds of downsizing your home to superannuationFrom 1 July 2018, people aged 65 & over will be able to contribute up to $300,000 into super from the proceeds of selling their home, if they have owned their home for at least 10 years. This $300,000 is in addition to any other voluntary contributions people can make. It should be noted the $300,000 applies to both members of a couple, so a couple will be able to contribute up to $600,000 to super.

Energy assistance paymentA one-off Energy Assistance Payment for 2016-17 of $75 for single recipients and $125 per couple will be paid to those eligible for qualifying payments on 20 June 2017. Qualifying payments include the Age Pension, Disability Support Pension and the War Widow(er)s.

Enhanced residency requirements for pensionersAlso from 1 July 2018, the residence requirements for the Age Pension and the Disability Support Pension are increasing. Currently, to qualify for a pension, a client must have at least 10 years residence in Australia with at least five years of those years continuous residence. Under the changes, a person will be required to have at least 15 years residence in Australia unless they have either:• 10 years continuous Australian residence, with five years during their working life (16 years of age to Age Pension age), or• 10 years continuous residence and not have been in receipt of an activity tested income support payment for cumulative periods greater than five years.

Pensioner Concession Card reinstatedPensioners who lost their entitlement to their Pensioner Concession Card due to the assets test changes on 1 January 2017 will have their card reinstated. The Pensioner Concession Card will be reinstated to about 92,300 former pension recipients and will provide access to discounts and concessions offered by states, territories and private providers. The card will be reissued over time with an ongoing income and assets test exemption. Pensioners who get the Pensioner Concession Card reissued will also retain the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card so they should continue to receive the Energy Supplement.

As mentioned in the previous newsletter, Stewart & I will go over these and any other relevant announcements at our June 14 seminar, however, in the meantime if you need some help with the above (or any other financial planning matters), I am happy to help. That could be initially via a brief chat, by phoning me at our Aspley office (3863 6300), or else feel free to email me ([email protected]), or at (www.aspiresrs.com.au). Stay secure online

Identity crime has become one of the most common and fastest growing crimes in Australia. Each year around five percent of the adult population, or about 900,000 people, report being a victim of identity crime resulting in a financial loss. Remember: Treat your personal information as you would treat your money—protect it and don’t leave it lying around for others to take.

Personal and financial information is currency for criminals online. With your stolen identity, a criminal can access your bank account, obtain credit cards or loans in your name and potentially ruin your credit rating. Use this guidance to learn how to protect your personal information and privacy.

Steps you can take to protect your identity online:You need to be careful with how much personal information you reveal online. Sharing your addresses, telephone number, birthday, and other personal information can mean you are at a greater risk of identity theft, stalking and harassment. This includes information you post on social media.

You also need to think about what information you may have online that is spread across multiple sites. Identity thieves can piece together your identity from public information that is available about you online.

Take proactive measures to protect your information Use strong passwords and don't share them with anyone. Ideally use a random combination of numbers, letters

and punctuation over eight characters long. Learn more about using strong passwords. Use a separate email address for shopping, discussion groups and newsletters. If you need to, you can then

change this address without disrupting online business activities. Only share your primary email address with people you know. Adjust your privacy settings on social networks to control the amount and type of information you want to

share.

Moderate your activity online and monitor for signs of compromise Check your billing and account records carefully to detect signs of potential identity theft early. Be careful when signing up to mailing lists – spammers sometimes use the unsubscribe button to validate

addresses. Only make online purchases from companies that have a clear privacy policy and secure payment pages. Find

more information about safe online banking and payments. Think before you fill out online forms and be careful with whom and how you share your information. Ask

yourself: do I really need to give my information to this site? Keep a record of what information you have given to whom.

Know what to do if your identity is stolen Notify your financial institutions. Change your passwords. Notify the relevant websites. Request a credit report from a reputable credit reference bureau.

Too much sugar in the diet can contribute to health problems like obesity. Refined (or processed) sugar provides a quick, simple source of energy, but it doesn’t contain other nutrients such as vitamins and minerals. Sugars are popular in the processed food industry because they add taste, colour, bulk and thickness to food products. They also prevent mould forming and act as a preservative. The World Health Organisation suggests keeping daily “free sugars” to about 5 per cent of your daily energy intake (that’s about 6–9 teaspoons) for optimum health. What does 6–9 teaspoons really look like? Let’s break it down.First up, how much sugar can I eat per day?

5 per cent of daily energy intake averages out to about 6 teaspoons for women and 9 teaspoons for men.A teaspoon works out at 4.2 grams of sugar.Free sugars include refined sugars added to processed foods AND the natural sugars found in honey, syrups, fruit juices and fruit concentrates. It doesn’t include the sugars found in milk (lactose) or fresh fruit and veg.

So what does this look like over the course of a day? 1) Breakfast: get off to a sugar-free start.Low-fat yogurts, store-bought baked goods and packaged cereals can be notoriously high in sugar. If you don’t want to exceed your quota before 11am, we recommend making your own brekkie at home and sticking to more savoury options.Tub of fruit flavoured yoghurt (160g): up to 7 teaspoons.Bowl of Just Right cereal (50g): up to 4 teaspoons.2) Looking for low-sugar lunch? We would always recommend a home-cooked lunch . But if that’s not an option, low-sugar takeaway lunch IS possible if you know where to look.Large pre-made Sumo salad with dressing: up to 5 teaspoons. Two sushi rolls: up to 4 teaspoons. Two slices of white bread, expect to get nearly 3 grams of sugar from the bread alone.Simple Pumpkin Salad: less than half a teaspoon per serve.3) Dinner time We recommend cooking your own dinner from scratch wherever possible. That way, you know EXACTLY what’s in it. But if you just need a takeaway night, make sure you’re smart about your choices (and maybe give certain dishes or cuisines a miss).Takeaway Pad Thai: up to 6 teaspoons.Latina Lasagne with Angus Beef & Vegetables (200g serve): 3 teaspoons.Carrot Tahini Burgers with Radicchio + Tzatziki: less than half a teaspoon per serve.4) Time for a treat? Desserts and snacks.Desserts and snacks often pack a sugary punch relative to their size. If a snack attack strikes, stick to options like nuts, fresh fruit or 85 per cent or more dark choc. Slice of café banana bread: up to 11 teaspoons.Magnum Classic ice cream: 5.5 teaspoons.2 blocks of 85 per cent dark chocolate (30g): about 1.5–2 teaspoons.

Your health

How much sugar are you consuming in Burnie Brae biscuits? 1 x Delta Cream and 1 x Butternut Snap = 9.4 grams of sugar = over 2 teaspoons of sugar!

Centre News• and more!!

A Research Project you are invited to be part of

Craft Group movingAn opportunity has arisen for the our Wednesday morning Craft group to move the Respite Centre with a new timeslot of Thursday Morning 9am – 11am.

The move to the new venue will allow the group to have a dedicated space and we feel confident that the members of the group will continue to thrive and enjoy each other’s company in this new setting.

This will commence from Thursday 1st June

You might think that reading groups are simply an arena for book worms to indulge in their favourite passion or for you to have enjoyable argument about your favourite story or characters with like-minded individuals…but book clubs actually offer more lifelong benefits than you realise:

Joining a reading group can also help to extend your reading, as you’ll be tempted to try different types of books that you might not otherwise have chosen by yourself.

Reading groups are actually a fantastic place to promote learning. Discussing books helps to reinforce things in your mind and enable you to retain information better.

Book clubs enable you to appreciate otherwise “dry” topics within the context of an involving story - for example, reading books set in certain periods allow you to learn more about history, without the dread of boring facts and dates.

For those shy of public speaking, book clubs are a great way to start practising expressing your opinions to an audience or summarising information and presenting it in a coherent and engaging way

Looking for Burnie Brae Book Club Members

All welcome to join the Book Club2nd Monday of each month in the Respite Building
